Avatar help

Could someone point me towards the avatar tutorial?  Can't find it and I'm getting awfully tired of beating my head against a wall over it.  Trying to upload an avatar but I don't know the requirements (ie - image size and proper file extensions (if required) )  HELP!!! ><
