Heya,

First time I've had this trouble, I tried logging into E. on my computer, and I got the message

Sorry, but the administrator has blocked access to Tor proxies.

I can log in with my laptop, but not my other computer. Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks!

Someone's broken proxy mod, to help with a widescale hack of forums.

I've disabled it.

Uh, wait, what? Someone's conducting concerted attacks on E's servers?

Vekseid

No, just bots. Almost all major forums have been under constant attacks over the past few years, it's just getting worse.

The current hacking concern attempts to download memberlists and attempt to brute force the passwords of every member of a forum.

I have always had this nagging feeling of curiosity about why people does things like these.... >_>

Money.

If you share your forum password with your e-mail password, and your e-mail password is tied to some financial service (like Paypal), an attacker can score a jackpot.

Lord Drake

You mean my forum e-mail (the one that I use for Elliquiy)?

Or any IM associated with an e-mail address.

It's also used as another means to send spam, of course, and perform various trust based attacks.

Lord Drake

Fortunately my paypal-connected email does not share this password and my paypal account is empty (I use a rechargeable card).

But hey, the net is really an unsafe place.

Thanks for existing, Veks!

Moral - use a different password everywhere you go.

Vekseid

My advice is to either use a password utility, or just to segregate your passwords. Different one for e-mail, different one for Paypal, different one for important sites, and a few throwaway passwords for sites where you don't care if the account gets hacked.
