June 30, 1863. Major General Joseph Hooker prepares his army to take on that of Robert E. Lee in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, but at the last minute he is replaced by George Meade. At least, in our world. In another world, parallel to ours, Hooker clashed with Lee instead of Meade, with disastrous results. By the end of the American Civil War, the Union was nearly crushed. In a hasty treaty between Presidents Lincoln and Davis, the South successfully seceded, and became the Confederate States of America.

After that point, the two neighboring countries were constantly at each other's throats, resulting in several encounters, including the War of 1896. During World War I, the two countries became military powerhouses, constantly building weapons and forces in retaliation to the developments of the other.

When the Second World War came about, the results were bad for all involved. Nuclear weapons were discharged in both London, Germany, and Spain; but the worst strikes were in the Americas. The two countries tore each other to pieces, leaving a barren wasteland in their wake.

An arms embargo was brought forth from a coalition of nations, for the sole purpose of not destroying their own lands as the United and Confederate States had in petty civil war. Weapons are strictly manufactured and sold, permits are nearly impossible to get, and any caught without a permit at one of the many (many many) checkpoints, will be expediently imprisoned with little hope of leaving before they're ninety. They are so scarce in fact, that even law enforcement is forbidden weapons, on principle, and on the fact that firearms would be readily available to criminals who don't mind ambushing a few law enforcers.

Now, the only people that inhabit America are pirates and scavengers, scouring the dead continent for remnants of their forces, to sell to ever growing private armies.
