Why? The Lion want to wipe out the Scorpion, OK.  So do the Crab.  And Crane.  And Phoenix.  The Dragon would like to intervene, because balance and all that, but they wouldn't because they too know that Secrets are best kept dead, but they wouldn't interfere...  What allies do the Scorpion have?  Outside the Imperial line?

Well, in that plot, no other great clan is joining the conlifct yet, so at the moment scorpion is  mainly protected by the mountains between the lands of the great clans which gives them big help in defending. Also the Lion has already managed to seriously offend Mantis by demanding military access to Sturuchi(sp?) lands.

And no one likes Lion either, especially as Scorpions have been asking the very pointed question of "Do you think they'll stop at us?" So basically some of the others are afraid that if they Lion is too succesful they could try a coup.

I am good with ideas but still new at running a game plus I am a slow poster.  So that always makes things very drawn out and at odds when I GM something.  People involved in my Dark Heresy game can give testimony to how long my posting can take.  L5R is one of my absolute favorite role playing environments though and I'd be more than happy to help create a story idea and help run a game.

If I were going to run or give advice though about that time period or a game to be run there, I’d honestly focus on Hantei Kusada as he is a “guest” among the Scorpion.  Perhaps there the characters are secretly called through his still loyal spies and monks to assist him.  Then later when he ascends the throne they work for him still but in deep secret, making preparations for a future bid on the throne.  That, I think, would provide more low level things at the start since they are working for the future Emperor and simply moving to secure his safety among enemies.  The Scorpion characters could also be working to undermine their daimyo’s tightening grasp on the throne with the aid of the other characters.

Tsuruchi, the former Wasp minor clan.  Archers beyond compare.

Oh, they've been publicly ousted more than once. :-) It's true that they've hardly ever suffered severe consequences for their actions, but, honestly, have any of the other clans? I don't think any of them have gotten their full just desserts. Political and military clout does a lot towards preserving all of the clans, not just the Scorpions.

Let's see, currently, the Phoenix are still reeling from having the Isawa name taken by a powerful Oni.  The Dragon are still apologizing for Hitomi and Father Moon.  The Lion clan kicked one of their greatest Akodo generals, and turned out the rest of that family into Ronin before he came back, rubbed dirt in their faces by becoming Emperor.  Sadly the Crane has rarely gotten any respect, despite being pretty damn good swordspeople.  The Crab?  Well, they made a deal with the Shadowlands, not to mention that the Hiruma Family lost their lands, and people remember that.  And the one thing that everyone agrees about the Unicorn is that they have great horses.

But the Scorpion?  They are never, ever, wrong.  Ever.  The Scorpion Coup?  They knew the Emperor was Fu Leng's puppet, and when all the other clans attacked?  They knew about the Second Thunders.  The Scorpion clan is perfect, and they can also angst about how they 'have' to 'keep the secrets' so no one else has to carry such an awful burden.

You know what?  I'm going to stop there, I've said my piece.  I don't care for the Scorpions, they are to my mind badly put together and require too much DM fiat to make work.

We can agree to disagree. ;D

I do like the Crane Clan a lot. :-) I like that they can combine political clout with skill at arms. Granted, they aren't as strong or martially focused as the Crab Clan or the Lion Clan, but they can still hold their own in both the court and the battlefield. Plus, they have a high appreciation for art, something which I agree with wholeheartedly. ;D

I think a lot of the problems with L5Rs storyline come from it being driven by the results of the CCG tournaments. A combined Crab / Shadowlands deck has won? Okay, the Crab make temporary alliance with an Oni lord because ...

My first character was a Dragon bushi, but after spending 3 years running the City of Lies campaign, I'm much more at home in the Scorpion clan.

I've tried running games on here before, both on the boards and via our Mumble server.

I never knew that's how they did it! :o I too find it hard to believe that the Crab Clan would ever ally with the Oni, no matter how temporarily. I mean, a momentary truce would be one thing, but not an alliance. :P

I'd love to take part in a L5R roleplay here on Elliquiy! :D Especially if naughtiness is allowed. ;D

And that's been the issue with L5R.  They (AEG) decided to let the card players decide how the history goes.  Now, there are some card players, even tournament level, that actually do care about the story, but I know for a fact that the Crab/Shadowlands deck was pure pragmatics.  At the time there was a synergy between one of the Clan Champions and several underworld critters.  So the players of the deck put Shadowland monsters and OWNED the tourney.

What I find ironic is that the the Scorpion Clan has not actually won any major story tournament to my memory (which is, I freely admit to being spotty.)

If I were to run an L5R game (here or elsewhere), I'd set to before the Scorpion Coup, which would mean rearranging a few clans, but I can live with that.  Only because I'd prefer my players to be The Seven Thunders.

We were playing the City of Lies campaign, the PCs were Imperial Magistrates. Tying up criminals ... well, that was something left to their yoriki or doshin :)

Wouldn't want them to get their hands dirty. ;) I suppose tying up an enemy rather than slaying them outright could be considered a dishonorable act. I'd never though of that before! ;D

Oh, to be tied up by men of the lower class! How humiliating! *swoon* ;)

Most of the PCs were great Clan members. One was a Wasp. Guess who got all the dirty jobs?  >:)

One of the funniest moments in that campaign for me ... as the group investigated stuff that was going on, a low class geisha house kept coming up .. not directly, but somehow linked to what they were turning up. They decided it needed to be investigated, but as honourable samurai, they could hardly go in. The Wasp 'volunteered'.

He goes inside, the madam asks him if he liked a girl or a boy, he replied "Surprise me."

He is led into a small chamber in which is a bath, steam rising from it. The madam leaves and the shoji panel slides shut behind him. He's looking around, but there doesn't seem to be anyone else there.

The steam clears a bit, and he sees there's a duck floating in the bath, pretty much motionless. Not quacking. Not preening. Just sitting there.

Staring at him.

As he looks at it, he gets the feeling that something isn't right. After a short time he realises what it is. The duck is listing to one side as it floats there.

Still silent

Still motionless

Staring at him.

He backs out of the room, makes his excuses and leaves.

Hey, he wanted a surpise  ;D

LOL! Talk about a surprise! ;D I hope he didn't tip the madam for that! ;) Besides the duck, did they discover anything else a little strange about the geisha house, or was it a red herring?

As much as I'd like to claim all the credit, it was inspired by a scene in Shogun.

The Englishman, Blackthorne, has been offered a girl (the samurai considering pillowing to be a perfectly normal and natural thing to do, and good for the health as well). He declines, I think because he's married.

They offer him a boy instead, and he blows up on them, so they're trying to figure out what he does like or want, having no experience with the English.

One says that the Koreans like dogs and ducks, so they consider fetching him a duck. They won't say anything, they'll just leave the duck in his room. If he wants the duck, he can have the duck. If not, no one actually offered him the duck, so it could just be ignored.

That would be telling :)

I may try running the City of Lies here again at some point, so it might come up again at some point.

Yep. That player seemed to attract odd happenings with animals. In Exalted, his Abyssal ended up with a badger sort-of-familiar that he had a hate-hate relationship with  ;D The badger kept trying to attack him, he found it cute and brought it with him to torment. In the Underworld, it was magically enhanced and bound to him as a familiar. The lunar got pissed off with it, hit it with her seven section staff for an INSANE amount of damage. The badger explodes in a shower of gore, then reforms into a very pissed looking badger again.

The party now looks something like this

:o
