Focus on the Family wrote a letter "from the future" four years ago. The "letter" was written from a Christian in "October 2012", to the people of the past in 2008. So now that we're actually in 2012, you can see the crazy that they predicted could be in the future by electing Obama the first time around. You can check it out here. It's long, coming in at 16 pages. But the crazy is worth it.

Almost every single prediction they made was very, very wrong, and most of them crazy to boot. But they got gays in the military correct. As for the rest, no Israel wasn't nuked, and the Russians haven't taken over Eastern Europe. There haven't been a rash of terrorist attacks in the US, and the US isn't running scared from Al Qaeda and the Taliban. The US isn't sinking into an even worse depression.

But I have to say, that a lot of their predictions sounded pretty good to me. Prosecution of the Bush Administration for torture? Trials instead of indefinite detention for arrestees? Taxing the rich? A liberal Supreme Court? Removing proselytizing and religious indoctrination from public schools? Home School students having to use government approved textbooks that teach evolution instead of young earth creationism and acceptance of homosexuality as a natural and normal lifestyle? Nationwide acceptance of gay marriage? End of the Boy Scouts of America1? Elimination of restrictions to getting an abortion2? Prosecution of medical personal that refuse to perform an abortion3? SIGN ME UP

1 The Boy Scouts of America is rabidly anti-gay, not allowing any gay members. It is largely funded by anti-gay fundamentalists. The death of the BSA would allow a less bigoted organization to arise and take it's place.

2 Such as waiting periods, needing to have parents sign if you're a minor, needing to have an invasive and painful intra-vaginal ultrasound while the patient is forced to view the ultrasound images while a doctor is forced to read a script full of falsehoods written by state law makers who aren't medical professionals... you know, those sorts of restrictions that exist in the real world in the US right now. Bullshit restrictive legislation varies from state to state. In other states, they just take away the medical licenses of physicians who perform abortions.

3 No hospital, clinic, or whatnot is going to try to force random physicians or nurses to perform abortions, either in the real world, or in the fiction that Focus on the Family wrote. The medical profession has specialties. They're not going to grab the guy that specialized in drawing blood or taking X-Rays, and asking him to assist in an abortion. They're going to use physicians and nurses who's specialty include that sort of procedure... unless it's an emergency. The only sort of emergency abortions that are performed are the sort that are necessary to save the mother's life. And if a doctor or nurse refuses to perform or assist in an emergency abortion, then they should be fired. If the mother suffers because of it, or dies, then the medical personnel should be prosecuted for failing their duty.

Anyhow, just wanted to share the letter, and see how others reacted to it.

It might actually fun to write something like this for ourselves and see how accurate our predictions will be. :-)

At the very least we'll end up having a laugh about the silly thoughts of our younger selfs in four years time. ;)

Like Nostradamus. If we just make enough predictions, some will have to come true.

They left their home of summer ease
Beneath the lowland's sheltering trees,
To seek, by ways unknown to all,
The promise of the waterfall.

Nostradamus was also incredibly vague and abstract which helps people read ridiculous stuff into his work. It's like those people who compress the talmud and then scan it for key words that accidentally pop up.

Focus on the Family will rationalize their dire predictions by saying that staunch conservative freedom-fighters turned back Obama's liberal forces, but that a second election will truly be the apocalypse.

Ever notice this trend in Far-Right American politics?  If you're a paranoid and loony group, just insert the word "Family" into your organization's name!

Family Research Council, Defend the Family, American Family Association...  They're like clones.

Quoteinstead of being tried in military
tribunals, are given full trials in the U.S. court system, and they have to be allowed access to a
number of government secrets to prepare their defense.

this line I found the most absurd, nobody is stupid enough to think that will happen

then I read on, and realized, yes, they are
Prudence, justice, temperance, courage, faith, hope, love...
debate any other aspect of my faith these are the heavenly virtues. this flawed mortal is going to try to adhere to them.
