An hour to midnight

Earth. Not ours, but one that on the surface seems almost identical to ours. But...something is wrong. People are vanishing, shadowy figures are committing crimes which cannot be solved. A website, whose origins cannot be traced, ominously warns "They have begun the march to midnight."

But who are 'they'? No-one is sure.

When a mysterious woman appears on your doorstep she begs you for help. Not just for her...

...whatever midnight means, the world will never be the same.

Apologies for the vague premise (I want the reveal to happen naturally, and the reaction's going to be less believable if you know everything going in...if that makes sense?).
I'm open to superpowers, although only limited (telepathy, telekinesis). At least...at first anyway. Your character is human though.
My preference would be a female/NB character (not ruling male character out 100%, it's just my preference for the story).
