I've been considering making my own central website for my profile, preferences, and writings. My guess (for now) was that I'd be using Wordpress software. What I'm concerned about is that I don't know a lot of how to do this.

I could host on Digital Ocean, and I know how to do that, but then a lot of security is placed directly in my hands. As I will have mature content on my site, I feel that I would be more of a target for hackers and other malicious attacks, and I don't know how to navigate that.

I could use Wordpress.com, which does allow written mature content so long as my blog is marked mature, but has exclusions of visual pornography. I could easily avoid posting GIFs and videos on my site, but I'd still want to link to say, my tumblr, or to Elliquiy.

Does anyone have much knowledge about these things and what I can do?

Wordpress auto-updates, so any reasonably secure host should be fine.

The main way Wordpress sites get compromised is through shady plugins and themes.

IIRC Veks had a thread somewhere saying where he hosted E and what some of the underlying technologies he used were.  I came in here looking for it but didn't have much luck.  My girl wants to start a toy shop and we were going to use the VPS Host my MC Server was on, but they ended up screwing me over in the most absurd way.

I posted my stack over at https://hexwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page

It hasn't changed too much, but I've been updating things (see recent changes). A lot of my own custom settings have either become the default or been made irrelevant in one fashion or another, so if you follow the principles of the guide you should get where you need.

Using a management solution like WHM/cPanel may be superior for your needs, though it does cost some.

My current hosts are Hostvenom and Hivelocity. The former hosts E and BMR, while the latter hosts remote backup, support websites, and my mail server.

Something I'm just realizing is that part of the reason I had so much trouble getting a host in the first place is that I want to run a few single threaded applications too, how are the core speeds?

If someone is selling Virtuozzo containers you want to avoid them like the plague. If that was what you were sold, and you started using resources you believed were 'yours', then that will be an issue.

Elliquiy's new server, which we will be migrating to in the coming weeks, is a W-1290P machine.

If you need to 'know' a machine is yours, the $45 1230v2 machine Hostvenom is selling is a pretty good deal. Ran some pretty loaded Minecraft servers on it (which I need to get back to running again >_>)

MC is one of the singlethreaded apps I'm worried about, tbh.  I think the first host I tired was using the Virtuozzo containers and it couldn't even handle the MC server alone while it was empty.  The second host had some custom server setup where they would let people choose specific hardware, and would let others pick it up at a discount when they discontinued use, so I grabbed one of those and it worked quite well.  Unfortunately, someone called their customer service claiming to be me so they decided to give them my billing information and turn control of my account over to them, so I decided it was time to try to find a new host.

! Hope you issued a chargeback there.

If you want something that's genuinely your own hardware, one of the grab bag servers here is going to be hard to beat. I ran multiple Minecraft servers simultaneously using this (with SSDs), handling upwards of 20 players at a time.

If you need something cheaper though, you basically want a KVM VPS. I know Hostvenom plans to offer them but I don't think they're quite setup yet.
