Science fiction scenario - looking for interest

The basic concept is such: a deep space human colony has gone radio silent.
A repair/reconnaissance crew is sent out there to find out what has happened. This ship would be manned by both military types and scientists/engineers.
Shortly after arriving, the crew would be attacked as well by a strange alien being. Several of the crew would be killed, and the rest of them would lock themselves in a safe - for now - part of the colony compound.
The scenario is obviously based upon movies like Aliens and video games like Dead Space.

Whilst in lock-down, the crew would find out that there is a large complement of non-activated replicants (basically human-like robots) in one of the cargo bays.
They would remotely activate several of those to help them find out what had happened and where the strange alien being that attacked them came from.

The catch: these replicants would not be programmed for combat, so they would be vulnerable to attacks as well. Their programming would vary from maintenance, engineering to more menial tasks like cooking. A few of them might even be pleasure models (think Gigolo Joe or Jane in A.I.). So even the robots would be out of their depth, but their directive to obey human orders would compel them to still try to carry out the orders they receive.

I see this as a game for 5-8 PCs, with the roles being evenly (or as near as possible) divided between humans and replicants. The rest of the characters (human and alien) will be NPCs.

If you find this idea at all appealing, leave a message in here.

Wow, this looks totally cool.

I'm showing plenty of interest in this and thinking of maybe a replicate.

I've been looking for something like this for a while now, nice to spot one with PC slots open for once.

RedEve

Some more details.
The initial complement of men on the repair vessel will have been 16. Ten of those were security/military. Six of those were engineers and scientists.
In the fracas before they reached the safe section of the compound, they lost most of their security force. Only three of those still remain.
The scientists fared better, and all but one of them survived.

would a "cyborg" type of human work? someone with "upgrades" persay, like robotic leg, or arm, eyes, cock, etc be acceptable?

It's a universe with advanced robotics, so augmented humans would exist, and military personnel would be prime candidates for the "improvements".

Ah. Uh... Yeah.

Forbidden Planet.

Which actually evolved into "Lost In Space" - the original TV series not the crappy 1990s movie.

Not totally sure yet.

Perhaps a sexy female replicant programmed for cleaning and general maintenance, that has a glitch in it's programming put there by the female (lesbian) programmer on purpose to make it act gay? Failing that one of the scientists, possibly a maintenance technician. Given that there are clearly extra-terrestrial life forms in your universe, are you limiting the crew to human?

I'm curious though, about a couple of things: The crew are going to stay safe in the sealed part of the base, while the machines get sent out to fight the nasty tentacle monsters, and yet none of the machines are programmed to fight. This seems rather one-sided and short-lived to me. As I said, I'm interested, but a way short of saying yes I'll join as yet. I have rather a lot of questions:

  • How do the aliens attack?
  • When they attack a replicant, will it be killed?
  • If not, how do the replicants survive?
  • Is it possible for a player to have two characers, one human and one replecant?
  • Is it possible to play a non-human who is allied to the humans?
  • How will the replicants go about investigating?
  • what will the humans be doing? (Or is that a dumb question? *eyeroll*)
  • What forum where you thinking of putting the game in?

Sorry to be a pain, but if I wasn't interested, I wouldn't be asking. It's a good idea, that needs working on to make it a great idea...!

Please check out my latest A/A post.

Well, the idea isn't for the machines to do all of the fighting.
They will be activated to join the humans in the safe/locked down section of the compound and do some reconnaissance on their way over.
The storage bay where they are being held is on the other side of the facility.

Now in terms of the questions:

    How do the aliens attack?

The aliens can most easily be likened to the Xenomorphs in Alien, though without the part where their blood doubles as an acid.
Their appearance will be more like a bipedal crustacean, around ten feet in height.
Their attacks will focus on their superior strength and the sharpness of their claws (as well as sharp edges on their exo-skeleton).
Said exo-skeleton will also work as alien kevlar against low-caliber gunshots. It will take a lot of high caliber rounds or a small explosion to bring even one down.

When they attack a replicant, will it be killed?
If not, how do the replicants survive?

Replicants can die if they sustain too much damage. Since the aliens are strong enough to dismember and literally rip humans and replicants to shreds, that means that replicants can and will perish.
Obviously though they can survive wounds that would kill a human almost instantly. They are no longer salvagable when their memory core (which is located in their head) is completely destroyed.
So even a beheaded replicant can still have his consciousness loaded into another body, but once the memory core itself is destroyed, the replicant is essentially dead.

Is it possible for a player to have two characers, one human and one replecant?

Whether or not I allow multiple characters depends a bit upon how many people are interested in this game. Right now I am leaning towards "yes".

Is it possible to play a non-human who is allied to the humans?

The non-humans have no interest to ally themselves with the humans. In essence, their intelligence is primitive (though they do have a form of communication that allows them to work in units).
They perceive the humans as a treat to their territory and their only response is to wipe them out.

How will the replicants go about investigating?

The replicants will search the sections of the base they need to pass through to reach the trapped humans. Some portions will have limited to no power, others will still be fully functioning.
Likewise, not every section will (already) have an alien presence.

what will the humans be doing?

The humans will activate the replicants remotely and then initially wait for the replicants to reach them. Once they have, they will use the date the replicants have gathered and devise a common strategy to escape.

What forum where you thinking of putting the game in?

I was leaning towards the NC exotic section.

Hope this answers some of your questions! :)

Not really decided yet how anthropomorphous the aliens will be.
This would be pretty humanoid in form:

Probably too much so for the sake of this game.

Then there are more primitive looking creatures like these:

To expand upon your question a bit further:
In this game's universe, humans have colonized several dozen planets and moons, but they have only rarely encountered life forms, and when they did, they were rather primitive.
85% of the worlds they have colonized were devoid of any native life.
The remaining 15% did have some life forms, though they consisted mainly of single cell organisms.
On only two of their colonies have they discovered multicellular life forms, primarily in the form of trilobite-like creatures.
The aliens that have overrun the compound are by far the most advanced they have ever made contact with.

THAT....

Okay, so...

to expand on another question that you answered, but didn't totally answer because I didn't ask the entire question:

Will player characters get killed off in any circumstance other than the player dropping out?

It actually might be fun to be a replicant that gets decapitated, the memory core gets rescued and grafted onto another body...

I'm kind-of leaning towards a human maintenance tech at the moment. Someone skilled in the black arts of keeping a life support system functioning...

If we get to make two characters I might go with a replicant who is a cleaner, too.

Small arms is a generic term for any weapon that can be correctly operated by one person, so far as I'm aware, as opposed to a squad or crew weapon. Small arms can be taken to include such things as hand grenades, as well as rifles, assault rifles, sub-machine guns, machine pistols and pistols.

My question is, what sort of weaponry are we having?

Personally I find the idea of hand held energy weapons to be laughable. That image of a plasma cannon I posted? That pack on his back would, in reality, contain enough energy for a single shot! Carrying something that big around just to fire it once? Um, no!

HOWEVER, I'm willing to bow to the wishes of the GM on this one.

Eve, if you want laser guns, then go ahead, it won't spoil my enjoyment (although I might be forced to demonstrate the inherent disadvantage of attempting to do damage with something that can be shot right back at you with something I keep in my purse... lol)

Actually I prefer to keep it like I proposed above.
Slightly modernized versions of the weapons we already have today.
I do not want to make their arsenal ridiculously overpowered. The humans and replicants should be at a disadvantage, at least initially.
They will soon find out that all but their highest caliber weapons do not penetrate the aliens exo-skeleton.
Their explosives will do more damage, but they will - initially - be scarce.

Sorry I missed the post above where you said what weapons we would have, and good that there are no energy weapons.

The ship is a light cruiser and will have some armaments but those will not be (easily) detachable and will be useless within the compound unless a large group of er... shrimp converge on a single location which they then obliterate in one barrage.

This is my own secondary character, a replicant since my first character was a human and I want to keep the groups a bit in balance.

Designation: SX-256985 – “Jane”
Programming: SX-256985 is a standard pleasure and companionship model. Therefore her programming includes a wide variety of social subroutines, ranging from knowing how to behave in a host of social settings (dinner party, reception, …) to specific sexual subroutines (if a position or sexual act exist, 99% of the time the SX range will know it and be able to perform it).

Background: This particular SX model is a second generation pleasure and companionship replicant. This line was replaced by the third generation roughly 24 months ago. The company that produces them has since sold their remaining stock of second generation SXs to off-world colonies at bargain prices. “Jane” arrived on Stratski VII as part of a lot of replicants which were bought in bulk at a discount. This lot included both second hand models as well as new ones which were slightly outdated. As such, Jane has not yet been called into action, other than some quality control at the production plant where she was produced.

Okies. I have submitted my cleaner-replicant.

She has some very useful features like being able to squirt bleach and acid from her fingertips.... Not sure how our friendly neighbourhood monsters would react to that, but it might give the good guys a small edge?

Probably not enough to do real damage, but it will likely work to really piss off the giant shrimp. :P

Oh, definitely piss them off, possibly even blind them temporarily if squirted in the eyes...

By the way, I didn't start of thinking of that as a weapon, I was thinking in terms of, "This is a machine designed for cleaning things, what would make her really useful in that role? I know, how about not having to carry around a dozen bottles of different chemicals!"

I can relate, my amusement for the "Jane" replicant concept came from the idea of some guy having to do quality control on the sexbot line.
I imagine some middle-aged dude returning home from work, dead-tired and telling his wife to please leave him alone.  ;D

Update: I am waiting for at least one more CS from an interested party.
If his concept is good enough to approve, I might start the game off with just four players (GM included).
However, to create some more PCs, I would open up the possibility to create a secondary PC already.
This is not compulsory. If you feel you are not up to a second character or if you don't have the time or inspiration for a second PC, then please stick to your primary character.

I thought about having a soldier type, but since Emma is going to be patching up whoever fights, it's more meta-interaction than I try to have as a player.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

You could create another crew member. Not all of the people aboard the ship are military types, some are there to possibly repair whatever caused the compound to go dark.

There are also those along to simply keep the ship running. My main character, for example, is part of the ships crew, so technically she's military, but she's enlisted, below-decks, and only gets invited ino officer country or onto the bridge when things go wrong.

This is something that I find irritating about a lot of science fiction. Everyone assumes that the most important people on the ship are the ones on the bridge with stripes on their shoulders. Not so! The most important people on a space ship are the people who change the air filters, make sure the water recycling is working properly, etc... The people without whom, the entire crew would be dead from asphyxiation and/or dysentery within a week!

Elizabeth Moon is the only author I've ever found who writes about such things.

That is Mimi's job on the ship!

I can point to the first episode of Red Dwarf...

Early Season 1 spoiler

where the second least important crew member (according to rank) fails to fix something without the help of the least important crew member and the result is that the crew gets destroyed.

It's well known but by no means uncommon.  A lot of such things happen when the so-called leaders are proven completely inept to fix an actual problem.  That's just staying true to life.

"Everybody's Dead, Dave. Dave, Everybody's dead, They're all dead, Dave. Everybody, Dave, is dead!"

Yes, this is true. But on Red Dwarf it was done for comedic effect. and to keep the production cost down. If you have a cast of four central characters (Five when they rescue Kryten) it's a lot cheaper than having to crew the entire space craft.

Doing it purely for the sake of realism in a story, where the character who saves the day is one of the guys sitting at one of the consoles in the engineering department who just happens to think, "Oh shit, if I don't do something about that, the ship will be filled with poisonous gasses", and while the chief engineer is away trying to fix the transporter beam sop that they can teleport the alien that has taken control of the ship's computer back to the planet's surface, she quietly gets up and fixes the fault on the main effluent ingester, that resequences all the shit that comes out of Kirk's mouth backside and feeds ot back to the replicartors as useable raw material....

Oh and yes, I am only doing this one because so far there have been no Rodenburyisms other than my sarcastic comment above!

So, I'm not entirely sure if this is where Red Eve wanted me to put a character, but!

Name: Samantha Yorke
Age: 32
Rank: Lieutenant
Role on ship: Primary: Infantry (Ship-to-Ship/Ship-to-Land), Secondary: Astrogation
Bio:  ...

Lt. Samantha Yorke is a paramilitary squad commander aboard the Kalypso.  Her primary expertise is in the penetration of starship armament during spaceborne infantry operations for the purposes of infiltrating and/or capturing vessels, or as she likes to call it, "breaking hulls and kicking skulls."  Her talent in identifying structural weaknesses and developing sound infantry assault tactics lend themselves well to the defense and fortification of vessels, too.  She has been formally trained by the military as an officer and soldier in many aspects of marksmanship, survival craft, zero-G combat, demolitions and weapons maintenance.  To attain officer candidacy, she attained a Masters in physics, with a specific focus on astrogation.

She was born and raised in the Bellima V Mining Colony on Mars.  She was awarded a scholarship to the Military Academy at Europa (Jupiter's moon), where she prospered as a cadet, despite being the repeated victim of sexual hazing by both her instructors and fellow cadets.  She eventually married, and quickly divorced, shortly after graduating, but before being mobilized with an infantry batallion in the Andromeda star cluster.  She served four years as an NCO in five theaters of operation, serving with distinction and valor, though her personal life was rife with sordid tales unbecoming of a military officer.  Nevertheless, her determination and pluck saved her from court martial, and she continued to advance in rank.

She attended university for a short period of time to finalize her Masters.  Civilian life did not agree with her.  She was arrested for the possession of controlled substances twice, and her personal relationships spiraled out of control.  Her second marriage ended in suicide.  She soon returned to the armed forces upon the completion of her coursework, and entered Officer Training School in Andromeda.

Yorke has been aboard the Kalypso for two years, with the previous eight years serving at numerous military outposts across three solar systems.  She has taken command of seven warships, sixteen frigates and numerous space yachts in military operations, and has participated in three armed conflicts that involved extensive terrestrial maneuvers.  She is battle proven and battle ready.

Her extensive psyche analysis indicates that she copes at present with PTSD, depression and anxiety.  She is described as being a manipulative person, and not against using sex to get ahead.  She is also as being addicted to sex and alcohol, and partakes in the use of hullacigenic drugs when they are available.  She is polyamorous, and as a result, is incapable of maintaining traditional monogamous relationships.

I think I would be interested in this. What do you need most, Ms GM, a soldier, scientist, engineer or replicant?

RedEve

There is room for all of those.
Which would you prefer to play?

I'm leaning towards a replicant though I'm not sure which type. The pleasure-model has been taken so I am thinking either one designed to work in whatever heavy industry the colony was engaged in (mining?) or one designed as a general retail/service model such as a waitress, cook, bartender or storekeeper. Though if you think a human would have been employed in those tasks I could go for a simple maintenance/engineering replicant.

Being an anime fan I do like the idea of reconfiguring a member of the female domestic staff to operate weapons so that we'd have a sexy combat waitress or maid :p

Chrystal

To go with the sexy combat cleaner?

Hi H. I'm glad you spotted this one.

Oh and guess who's going to be the one making the alterations to the reps to turn them into soldiers.... *grins*
