What is the meaning of the symbols to the left of the topic line?

Basically, there's something like a sheaf of paper and something like a diamond with a shadow.

Sometimes the sheaf is marked with a "pin" or a "Padlock" (or both).

Sometimes the diamond is replaced by a question mark or an exclamation point.

What do these mean?  Are they user controlled?

To the far left of the topic the first column provides information about the thread. You might find various icons:

Sheet of Paper - a general topic thread
Multiple sheets of paper - the thread has multiple pages
Graph - there is a poll in the thread
Pin - this means it is pinned to the top of the Board and will stay there
Lock - this means it is locked and only the original poster (OP) or staff can make modifications or post
Smiley face - this means you have posted in this thread

The next column is a customizable icon you select. When creating a new topic under the subject field is an icon drop down. You can pick from a range of different icons. Most people use the default.
