*Sage Nods* I personally am with the MIB on this. Most people will flip their shit the moment the lights go out, finding out that life exists on other worlds would equal mass panic. Sometimes things are Need To Know for a reason.

Hey now, the Bible says nothing about aliens or extraterrestrial life, therefore it doesn't exist. Even if extraterrestrial life did exist, they would be going to hell anyway because they are not "saved", so no need to look further. :P

Yaah sorry about that see he crash landed, he just wanted to be nice so he healed this cripple and then he sort of accidentally sparked this religion thing i hope it did not cause any problems.

I know and that's what pisses me off.  I hate it, I hate it so much to the point I see red.

I cant count how many times ive had someone throw in my face the classic "Religions is da source of all evuhl and war" (Like they never heard of Politics....or how all wars are just a measure to enforce the dominance of one nation/ensure its economic security/strength against any and all rivals) and it gets a rise out of me.

Its like seeing a living version of your most hated stereotype.

I personally always liked the concept of religion, not just Christianity but generally i have read into a few of them but its more like an interest of Mythology. Its the practical application of it that makes me believe if any one of them is right there is some divine being up there just face palming all day.

I think Organization is the problem and (like all things) the extrimists are not policed and end up gaining power and using faith to manipulate those at lower levels. (Just like politicians *dramatic gopher music*

If ETs ever show themselves on Earth I'm pretty sure things will get ugly real fast. We already have a hard time treating other terrestrial intelligences as more than objects, so could we even recognize as sapient creatures from a wholly different world?
What if they're a colony of intelligent microorganisms? Or parasites?
What if they don't think we're sapients? or even notice us?
How likely are we to all react well in any of those cases?

@Anteros Well here is the thing, any alien life that can travel easily enough that they can reach us in a ship is sufficiently technologically advanced that it would be highly unlikely anything we could have to do would be very effective. Imagine a bunch of stone tipped spears tossed at a tank, noting is going to happen.

Now from the general theasises i have herd there are essentially two possibility's for a civilization like that, they are either advanced past there flaws to reach such a stage in witch case we get enlightened benign beings who are for some reason interested in interacting with us. If they are not, then they are an expansionist militaristic organisation, in witch case we get asked to join most likely, think Roman empire building. Since the usual trope of sci fi fiction of "they want our resources" actually dos not work once you realize that the moment you can achieve easy space travel you in essence have access to practically infinite resources.

I never said things would get ugly for the aliens! They might swat us like annoying pests if(when) we get uppity.

As for the rest, seems like anthropomorphism to me.

I normally detest Nietzsche except for his single quote.

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/22827-god-is-dead-god-remains-dead-and-we-have-killed

Yay sadness :P

We killed our reason for existence...and now we have nothing. When the universe grows cold and the final star burns out...there shall be nothing we can do for we can do nothing. And then all shall return to what it once was....nothing. (I can be depressing too :P)

But I much prefer to say something positive.

Its better to light up a candle than to curse out the darkness. So let all of Humanity light up a candle together so that we may find a common warmth together as one, in the endless black void of the universe around us. *runs around using my candle to light up everyone elses's :-)

The best way mankind can survive is to learn to accept and love one another for our differences..and I know we can do it, for we have become a much better species over time. (Just look at how different thigns were 800 years ago.)

See what i always get out of that quote is the sense that the action must be justified and because of it we invent justifications, in a lot of ways its what humans tend to do when we decide to do something. We invent justifications to that end, Nietzsche just also loved waxing lyrical about god and yes he was a miserable bastard.

Its why i was always interested in the idea of John Ringo* in A Hymn Before Battle (Posleen War) to cut it short the aliens we encounter are past war, they are so far away from armed conflict that they are literally incapable of it mentally. But they have a problem there is another empire out there spreading that is not, so they find an aggressive species hey look humans.

*I am at this point ignoring the writers personal views, that have made his later works unreadable. If you dont know anything about him he went a tad nationalistic fruity

EDIT: i must be a special kind of special because the quote and HIDE spoiler buttons look noting a like but i keep using the spoler one when i want to quote something.

40k was one part of sci fi/fantasy i never did get into sadly, for some reason the books avalible here at the time i was buying a lot of them were extreamly pricy while you could get cheep print paperbacks for literally 1/5th the price of a lot of other sci-fi/fantasy in English. I think the gaming store had like 3 40k books sit there for like...   4 years.

There is also a single novel by Elizabeth Moon called Remnant Population that i quiet enjoyed just for having an interesting angle on things, even if it dos kind of jounce a bit in places. Her The Speed of Dark is not obviously sci fi but it is a very interesting PoV and has a very positive end witch is always a plus. Honestly excluding Planet Pirates all of her work is generally prty cool though she is one of those writers who should occasionally be told to stop and find something new.

Maybe those aliens might not even be after what's on the surface, but rather - the core of the planet!  There's literally a thousand times or more iron, nickel, gold and other heavy metals in the heart of the earth than there's ever been up here in the crust. And really pure metal, too. Extracting all that "ore" would be a prize worthy of Klingons or...intelligent and hi-tech tentacled monsters.  :P

Of course, to get that stuff up, to anywhere close to the surface, they'd have to break the planet apart.  ::)

It's a motive which would fit in a James Bond movie - a master villain trying to gain control of all the iron and gold of the inner core of the planet.  O:)

It's so easy to justify everything as the decrees of a perfect but remote supernatural authority while condemning any attempts at questioning the wisdom or morality of those decrees, that even in the case that religion wasn't designed as a tool to control the masses, it couldn't not have to be used that way anyway and I don't trust people enough to overlook that.

Turns out raw materials like that, precious metals are not very precious or rare once you have the ability to move around in space. Our own asteroid belts have astronomical quantities of the stuff. Its just that technologically we currently suck to much to do anything about it. But once we have semi reliable and economically sensible technology to do it belt mining will be a thing its almost a sure shot. Not for the least reason that once you are up there being forced to push as little dead weight up as possible from a gravity well is kind of a better option. Luckily most of the stuff you actually need for the massive parts could be produced up there fuel and metals, and there you go presto ship construction in outer space.

Well in the extreme short hand version.

Honestly what is bumming me out the most is out current lack of focus on anything in that direction, the space race kind of got put on hold by the US big time Eu and some other places are still working on it. But it seems like the real hope now is private enterprises. So eve online might become a real thing :P

@Anteros
Because its a simple explanation. Its more complicated then that, and i can see the appeal of it as mentioned i love mythology and its full of explanations of why terrible things happen. It attempts to make sense of the world and to answer questions we have no answers for. Early on it also often acted as law and it codified methods of conduct, its not all bad far from it. Its just, needs amendments and there is the problem the little stickler ware its supposedly "the truth TM" so it cant be amended. So you are stuck with these laws and ideas that were created and cobbled together a thousand and some years ago, sometimes for good reasons for the time.

The way religion tends to deal with it is they ignore the really bad parts, except when every so often some asshole wants to justify being and asshole and digs them up. In the end i am always left with the sensation that its not the religion part thats the problem its the asshole part, and the herd mentality.

I hope we aren't truly derailing this thread.

But thank you for being respectful. (since I've seen people word that in way more insulting and offensive ways, the most common form being dismissing people's mental states or calling them idiots just for believing in something.).

The truth is we take it all on faith and sometimes it just makes sense to people. Its like asking how can you be a democrat or Republican? Capitalist or Communist? We are all taking things on faith and hedging our best that whatever side/faction/Ideology we side with is the right one. And how do we truly know it is the right one?

The truth is we don't,none of us do, but we hold out hope that things will work out. Sure it might be a way to manipulate the masses and make them puppets...but so is everything else. We live ina  world where literally everything is trying to control and get us to think in a certain way.
