Oooohhh...I came home just in time for Saffy to gag Trie? Awesome!

Trieste

Okay, I know at least one or two of you can help me with this. We're doing network diagramming in this forensic computing class and I get most of it... but the notation of address ranges is stumping me. Is it based on the binary thing where it's essentially 2^whatever? Example: The network 192.168.0.1/24 has how many IP addresses? At first I thought it was just that the last byte would be 1-24 and that was the network but apparently that is ... not the case...

If I remember correctly, that's 256 addresses.

Okay, but why?

Because each of the elements (a.b.c.d where a, b, c and d are elements) is 8 bits, and 256 takes 9 bits to store this value (in 8 bits, 256 is the same as zero, it's like in old cars, when the car has done 100000 miles/kilometers, it says "00000" on the odometer).

Trieste

No, no, I get that, but why does the /24 equal 255 addresses?

All I remember that far down is that it has to do with the translation of the address to binary. Can't be of anymore help than that.

Something about translating the address to binary and that address will match the first 24 digits in binary, which leaves you with 256 possibilities. I could be wrong on that.

It doesn't...?  0-255 is 256...I'm missing something I think.
