A summary of the second week of the Trump presidency: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38830514

Who's ready for the third week?

Verasaille

I think I am ready to join the people who are asking for Washington, Oregon and California to secede and join Canada! God save the Queen is a heck of a lot better than the likes of Trumelthinskin.
I have gone off in search of myself. If I should get back before I return, please keep me here.

Do you think they'd take Pennsylvania?  Just considering options and all.  We've got a border of sorts at Erie...

Except that after such a breakout, California would surely begin pressing for making snowless LA the capital of Canada...  8-) Otherwise I can see the point.

And that's where I think most people underestimate Bannon &Co. They don't want to tune the piano. They want to tear the whole concert hall down till they can decide who bangs what rock with what stick. They actually want that piano torn to shreds. That way they can decide who rebuilds in what way after all the old instruments are blown away.

Those people want to wipe the slate clean. Their game is not what will do them any favors now. Their game is what will wip the slate clean so they can fill the vacuum they create.

And what if I am overestimating them? What if I don't? What if they really want to tear down the whole edifice and build something in their own image among the ruins? Planning for the best case scenario is not a good idea. Planning for a worse case scenario is. Better to overestimate them than underestimate them. At least that way you will be prepared for the worst that can happen.

Hasn't he already compared himself to Lenin and said he wants to pull it all down? I seem to recall an article about that showing up sometime last fall.

There have been similar articles, per Snopes.  (I happened to see the entry last night while confirming a Teddy Roosevelt quote.)  Bannon himself 'can't recall using those words', but he is described in a number of places as being anti-establishment (and not in any sort of good way.)

EDIT:  One article from the Washington Post:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/how-breitbart-has-become-a-dominant-voice-in-conservative-media/2016/01/27/a705cb88-befe-11e5-9443-7074c3645405_story.html?utm_term=.b33124631e6b

Quote“We call ourselves ‘the Fight Club.’ You don’t come to us for warm and fuzzy,” said Stephen Bannon, Breitbart’s executive chairman and one of its guiding editorial spirits. He adds, “We think of ourselves as virulently anti-establishment, particularly ‘anti-’ the permanent political class. We say Paul Ryan was grown in a petri dish at the Heritage Foundation.”

(I can totally believe that about Paul Ryan.)

Like I said in another post, I'm on 70s 'Media Time'. Like in the 70s.. News was a hour long for 3 times
a day.. So.. I don't look hard. Spent more time this weekend working on drafts to my senators and congressmen.
It's amazing how you can go from 'wacko socialist' to 'respected moderate' with 2 words. (Disabled Vet)

That's just the thing - I wasn't looking for stuff on Bannon at all.  (I'm also trying to limit the panic-inducing tendencies of the media.  I'm back to reading Dan Rather for commentary.)

I was curious if Teddy Roosevelt had actually said the bit about not being able to criticize the President being un-American (poorly paraphrased there.)  Saw the other thing in the sidebar by chance.

Two weeks into his term and a professor specializing in North American politics and economy tells a newspaper around here that Trump doesn't seem to fully grasp something: how the U.S. political system works in practice. (As some of you have pointed out here, he doesn't realize what the independence of courts really means...) ^_^

Which is surprising given how often he has been sued. Quests he's just used to using it as a weapon or burying things in motions and such till his opposite goes broke or gives up.

Evee the astronauts at ISS are weighing in on Trump and his orders. This is priceless: https://twitter.com/mrnickharvey/status/827661692649734147 (Harvey is retweeting one by Trump and one from the authentic ISS twitter account).

Haha! I would say that the ISS is still too close to Earth for my tastes. Perhaps a trip to Pluto will be better?

In somewhat related news, Trump is still in denial over his unpopularity: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/02/06/us/politics/donald-trump-administration.html?referer=https://www.google.com/

He has taken to calling any negative polls on him as "fake news". Oh the irony  ::)

QuoteAides confer in the dark because they cannot figure out how to operate the light switches in the cabinet room. Visitors conclude their meetings and then wander around, testing doorknobs until finding one that leads to an exit.

QuoteBut for the moment, Mr. Bannon remains the president’s dominant adviser, despite Mr. Trump’s anger that he was not fully briefed on details of the executive order he signed giving his chief strategist a seat on the National Security Council, a greater source of frustration to the president than the fallout from the travel ban.

Can you quote the relevant bits for those of us who don't want to register an account?

Verasaille

I was also going to suggest that Glyphstone. A lot of the links offered want you to register and make an account or subscribe to the newspaper. I would appreciate some quotes or maybe some copy/paste relevant articles.

If you're talking about the FP piece, you don't need an account. I certainly don't have one. The NYT have paywalls around, but at least the article Vekseid quotes is visible in its entirety.

Copy-pasting entire articles is against fair use terms, so please don't do it.

There's no way to access the article I can see without registering. Paying money gets you subscriber status with (presumably) unlimited reads, but I don't see any option to just bypass handing them your email/info.

Verasaille

Yes, you have to register on some of those sites, and since the news is coming so rapidly and nearly every day there are new things to read, that "up to five" articles a month gets used up pretty fast.

Just saying, posting a link does not help if people have already used up their "five articles".  I would rather have links to articles that do not have those restrictions.

I am following this one:

https://www.facebook.com/newsandguts/?hc_ref=NEWSFEED

Yes, sometimes they feature links to newspaper feeds. But at least they let people know what is going on. I applaud Dan Rather!

Though the scales need much more than this to be even close to balanced. I think now its like. 1 good thing he does for every 30 bad? :P

Before summer is here, people are gonna start placing bets on how long Trump can remain in office...  :D
