Cool!  Trying to find an appropriate (ie non-masked, non swordsoman) image, then I'll work on a sheet for her.
Instead of obsessing on the person you want to be, focus on who you DON'T want to be. It's much easier to not do certain things than to break your head on some ideal of yourself.

When the dust settles, you may find out you've become who you were supposed to be all along.

Baifa Monu Zhuan is one of my favorites, I loved the idea that white hair comes from closing one's heart to love. The current characters are using illustrations, but if you'd like to use a real model that's alright by me.

I bought Jade Empire on Steam a few weeks ago after not quite finishing it ten years ago. Either it's harder than I remember or I'm terrible at video games now, I pretty much just died repeatedly on the first real fight and gave up.

Did you play it originally on X-Box? The PC version has some framerate issues (which you can find fixes for) that can make it a bit difficult to play.

And yes, the beach scene is a pain. I still lose in that scene sometimes, and I've played the game... well... way too much xD

At any rate, if I can find a nice illustration for her I'd be willing to use it. If anyone could help with finding a white haired picture that fits, I'd be thankful :P Otherwise, I'll just use Li Bingbing, I suppose.
O/O: I was going to make a barebones F-list as a rough summary, but then it logged me out and I lost my progress, so I made a VERY barebones F-list instead: Here.

I did play it on X-Box, originally. I wasn't aware of the framerate issue, but I've also been told that keyboard controls are very bad and I should get one of those $60 controllers for it. The main thing holding me back right now is probably basic skill, though.

Dhi - Might be.  I pulled all of those off of Pinterest.

Bailang Quan (白狼拳)- White Wolf Boxing
White Wolf Boxing is a style largely created by Lian Xue herself, developed by observing the movements of a wolf taking down its prey. It emphasizes a cautious defensive stance, and sudden lunging strikes. A style of cold calculation followed by ferocious attack, it focuses more on finding an opening to attack for maximum damage than on brute force.

How does that sound for my character's fighting style? :D

Edit: Also, question. What kind of booze exists in this setting? :o

Since its an amalgam of Asian cultures, I'd suppose some sort of generic rice wine like sake or huangjiu is probably the standard drink of choice, with a distilled beverage akin to shochu or soju serving as the most common form of hard liquor.

Sadly, I won't get around to actually finishing Lim today, but I drafted up the less text-intense sections for the sheet already at least. Short of it for her background is that she came into leading a bunch of 'righteous bandits' who mostly take taxes from wealthy travelers passing through their territory and share with the poor if they end up with more than they need.

Edit: oh, darn, I just reread the lore posts and saw Lim is already in use. May have to reconsider the name.  :-\

Edit 2: Liem is an alternate Hokkien spelling. That might work.

名字 Name :  倒藪 林  Dàosǒu Lim (Bandit Den's Lim/Forest; Hokkien Chinese Variant of 'Lin')
功夫 Style :  Lim employs Wudang Style's highly aggressive Xing Yi Quan in hand-to-hand. She lacks talent for Wudang mysticism and compensates by wielding a yanmaodao (goose-quill saber) or guan dao (glaive) in combat, imitating Shaolin style.
五行 Element : Wood
喜歡 Ons : Fair competition, strength, dedication, people who remain true to themselves, rough play/playful roughness, fighting, having money, sharing money
反感 Offs : Disloyalty, fickleness, bathroom stuff, unprovoked cruelty, cowardice, suffering civilians, greedy officials, poetry

高度 Height : 5'3''
个子 Build : slender frame with powerful wiry muscles

Bailang Quan sounds like a unique idea with potential for a new kind of flavor. Go for it!

Rice wine and rice beer are going to be the most prevalent booze. Sake or something much like it is detailed in Han writings which influenced a lot of wuxia, and rice wine is central to the myth of the Shaolin drunken masters. I think the stronger liquors definitely have a place in a setting where kung fu masters brawl over the silliest things, and with all the alchemy going on, it would be strange to only have a couple of varieties of liquor.

Nowherewoman

Plum wine? (A former personal favorite and, to my understanding, a favored drink of the aristocracy at one time)

You can make wine out of any fruit. I can imagine lotus wine, mango wine... plus, I think grapes grow most anywhere and have been cultivated for thousands of years. Then you have mead - honey wine, again this has been around thousands of years.

Beer, rather surprisingly, has been brewed right across the world, also for thousands of years, not necesarily with hops, but anything you can add malt to.

And then you haver the favourite of the steppes, fermented yak's milk!

No shortage of alcoholic beverages. I would be careful with distilled liquors though, because distillation takes specialised equipment and I don't know when it was invented, but it was a lot later than fermenting and brewing - according to Wikipedia the earliest evidence is about a two thousand years ago for distilling water, but the earliest spirit distilleries are only hundreds of years old, which would effectively limit us to a date and/or geographical area, even with artistic licence.

Please check out my latest A/A post.
I would rather watch a movie then have dinner than have dinner then watch a movie!

I totally forgot about plum wine somehow. Its actually one of my favorite drinks too xD

Anyway, I'll get my character, Lian Xue, up soon!

Unfortunately I have to get ready to head out and take care of something. I'll work on her more when I get back, but in the meantime, here's what I got so far. I've got some idea of what to fill in for the rest of it, but I don't think I'll actually have the time to type it out until I get back. I plan on adding more to her personality too. And adding an image. Still trying to decide on live action vs art. xD

Edit: hastily fixed one of those typos that changes the entire meaning of a sentence xD She DOESN'T lean towards submission.

Edit again!: Added a little more. I really, really want to keep writing this and get it fully fleshed out, but I really have to go xD

Edit once more!: I didn't get to update it last night like I wanted, was too tired when I got home... but now its done! ... except for the image.

名字 Name : Lian Xue
功夫 Style : Bailang Quan (白狼拳)- White Wolf Boxing
White Wolf Boxing is a style largely created by Lian Xue herself, developed by observing the movements of a wolf taking down its prey. It emphasizes a cautious defensive stance, and sudden lunging strikes. A style of cold calculation followed by ferocious attack, it focuses more on finding an opening to attack for maximum damage than on brute force. The fact that her nails are often worn long and sharp is a fact that is fully taken advantage of with this style.

In addition to unarmed combat, Lian Xue has also incorporated the use of the jian into her style. The fundamentals of the style remain unchanged; whether fighting with bare fist or blade, one must keep their defenses up until the moment to strike presents itself, then attack without mercy.

She is also skilled enough with a bow to use one to hunt, though she hasn't mastered it to the same degree as unarmed combat or sword-fighting.

五行 Element : Metal
喜歡 Ons : Wine, tea, music, meat, worthy opponents, wolves, courage, passionate sex.
反感 Offs : Dishonest people, disloyal people, cowardice, vegetarian meals.

高度 Height : 5'9
个子 Build : Slender, athletic, subtle curves.
描写 Description : The first thing that comes to anyone's attention when they see Xue is the stark white color of her hair. It falls long and straight down her back, and is rarely tied up. Apart from that, she has a slender form, but one built for combat, with subtle curves that serve to fill out her frame without looking cartoonishly big on her. She tends towards black over colorful when picking out clothes, with the particular style of clothes depending on the situation. Her nails are often kept long, filed to a sharp point; something she takes full advantage of in battle. The jian at her side is one constant, regardless of how else she is dressing.
个性 Personality : Despite the stereotype of her element, she doesn't lean particularly towards submission in matters of romance and sex. She is rather flexible in that regard, somewhat defaulting to dominance.

On the surface, she can seem like a cold person, keeping herself guarded from strangers. She keeps a healthy distance from people she doesn't know, and even some that she does. She may open up to those who get close to her, though she finds sex easier than romance, or even friendship. She doesn't trust easily, but when she does, its an unshakeable bond. She in incredibly loyal to those she considers friends, or more.

She has a strong sense of justice, and can be ruthless in her pursuit of it, punishing evil-doers harshly. She cares little for the official law, however, obeying it when she agrees with it, and disobeying it when she disagrees with it. This can get in her in trouble, and she's always relied on her martial talents to get her back out of trouble again.

She has also picked up some habits from her early childhood which have proven hard to shake. She prefers to hunt her own food, though she has learned to enjoy food prepared for her as well. She loves meat, and dislikes having meals without some sort of meat in it, even if it's just fish or chicken. She also has learned the pleasures of good wine and good tea. Most importantly, when it comes to dining, she enjoys having people to trust to share it with. That last one, however, is a luxury she has rarely afforded herself.

传记 Story : Raised by wolves as a child, Xue spent her earliest memories learning how to hunt and defend herself in the wilderness. She developed a deep fondness for wolves, and even many years later, seems able to bond with them more than with people. Still, she did not spend all her life with wolves. She was eventually taken in by the Lian family, taking their family name as she had none of her own. It was from them that she learned how to behave in civilized society, and concepts of morality such as right and wrong. She also began to refine the martial skills she had learned from watching wolves, into a proper martial arts, with the help of more experienced martial arts masters.

Skilled with the martial arts, she began her vigilantism small, beating up bullies and petty criminals, growing more bold as she grew more skilled. She defended the innocent and punished the guilty, and was absolutely ruthless in her dispensing of justice. Eventually, she moved on, wandering the land and combating evil where she found it, and perfecting her martial arts skills. Somewhere along that road, her hair turned white, and that is one story she refuses to tell.

Somehow or another, her travels now take her to the village of Pai Sun.

Bit of a delay on my end, I fear, one of my cats is sick and had to get surgery -- wasn't in any state of mind to work on my character. He's on the mend now, though I'll have to get him to take some medicine for awhile and go to checkups. I'll try and get more ready tomorrow.

Lady Kitsune

Here is the fixed version of my character for approval. I think I got too caught up in the details. >.<

Ki Chun-hyang
名字 Name : Ki, Chun-hyang

功夫 Style : Hwa Rang Mul Sul – The Hwa Rang or “Flower Men” were the royal eunuch guard of a royal family in a far off province. The Hwa Rang developed a style of martial arts that pulled from numerous styles such as Tang-lang kung fu using external and internal power and Hsing-I that used characteristics of the five elements. Later added was the Moshuh Nanren, The Secret Shadow Warrior system of a neighboring land. The combined elements created Hwa Rang Mul Sul and made them a nearly indestructible legion of warriors. “Death follows the scent of flowers.”

五行 Element : Fire

喜歡 Ons :Hot sultry moments, overwhelming passion, little bunnies trembling cutely.
反感 Offs :Anything gross

高度 Height :5'2”
个子 Build : Lithe and graceful with a generous decolletage

描写 Description :Dark mysterious eyes that dance with amusement or darken with rage. Their depths hold secrets and swirl with mischief. She has pouty lips that are sweet for kisses or smirk with knowing. Her smile can light up a room or make you shiver from the cold. Her beauty is ethereal as if her skin is powdered with crushed pearls. Her movements are liquid as if she is always in an eternal dance. Her long dark hair is lustrous and soft.

个性 Personality :Chun-hyang can be like night and day. She is quick to laugh and forgive those she cares for and just as likely to take down those who would harm those she loves. She has soft spots for the helpless but can be cold and ruthless and willing to manipulate an outcome in anyway as long as the end result is justice. She is mysterious and haughty as a persona but she will always be on the side of the true and good.

传记 Story: Born into the royal court of her land as the princess of the Third Queen, the darkside of court politics endangered her life. Her mother, unwilling to allow her daughter or unborn son to be killed by the jealous First and Second Queens because they were childless, gave seven year old Chun-hyang into the care of her faithful Hwa Rang Captain.

Kim Wa-na, the loyal Captain, took the child and under cover of night and fled the high court on the eve of the Lunar New Year. Hiding in plain sight in the midst of a training school for Kisaeang, he sought sanctuary and protection with his grandmother rumored to be a Wonwha from long ago. She now lived as a haengsu or elite concubine, training future kisaeng for nobles. As the old woman was nearly untouchable for her reputation and the indignity of a royal princess being in the care of courtesans, the disguise was perfect.

As it was dangerous for Chun-hyang to come out hiding, Chun-hyang trained among the other courtesans and became sought after for her talents in Geommu, sword dancing. This training was mostly a cover for her other more secretive training of Hwa Rang Mul Sul given by her teachers, Kim Wa-na and Madame Lotus.

Chun-hyang was devastated to hear of the death of her mother poisoned at the other Queens' hands. She became even more enraged to hear that the First Queen was now controlling the Destiny of the prince and heir, her brother. It took much convincing from her “Father” Wa-na and her madame that she was outmatched as she was. The power of the Queens was too great and she would never be able to pass hundreds of trained warriors just to exact her rage fueled revenge. Madame Lotus chastised Chun-hyang for not thinking things through and disregarding her training. A kiseang had skills no warrior had and a plan was laid out. Properly humbled, she trained harder for now she would bide her time and gain the fame she needed to gain audience at the royal court and hopefully her brother's ear. Even if it took her years.

For now, Chun-hyang must gain fame and notoriety. Her beginning will hopefully start by performing her elegant sword dance for the Lord Chiang and his daughter to gain the prestige she needs to put her on the path of Justice.

I am working on it, I swear!

Dhi

Ki Chun-hyang is approved. Very cool to see a character with Korean inspirations.

Working a bit more on Liem (my cat -- Rusty -- is doing well so far, just hope the terrible heat isn't affecting him too badly while I'm at work), is anyone familiar with cloth armor that would be setting appropriate and that a bandit clan chief might wear when not in leather/fur? Looking for something she might put on to visit the festival.

Dhi

I don't think of armor and passive defense as being much a part of wuxia. I wrote a post on fashions as a suggestion to what different people might wear, and leather seems appropriate for a bandit or anyone who makes a good living by traveling. Active defenses made of cloth certainly exist, and battle scarves and weighted cloaks come to mind. These require training and skill and so are celebrated in wuxia; armor is instead a training wheel.

This is not to say you shouldn't have armor. The Imperial soldiers wear armor, and practice their own autocratic kung fu.

But I'm not sure what constitutes cloth armor so I can't be of much help.

VonDoom

Hmm. Good point. I have seen a few wuxia movies that showed heroic soldiers and generals wearing armor, but that's a different clique, even if they have similar skills. Thinking about it some more, I'm mostly looking for sturdier clothing, really, that affords a little protection -- like the layers European knights wore underneath heavier armor.

I think I found something, though: apparently this is a Mongolian Silk armor. It mostly helps with getting arrows out cleanly and affords some protection against poison getting into the bloodstream -- not entirely sure how the latter would work, admittedly. It was often worn beneath leather armor, so it fits pretty well what I had in mind.

Just wanted to let you know I'm still here and interested, just got really sick. Had like 38.4° (taken under the armpit, so actually more) on Friday -- it's better now with medication, but I'm seriously exhausted all the time.

Rusty (my cat) is doing much better, at least. Tomorrow he'll get the stitches out, too. Luckily the vet will be coming to my place for that, since I'm just around the corner.
