Hey guys!

I'm 19 year old American and heading off to my Freshman year in August.  It's occurred to me that they will probably search the websites I visit, which would make posting regularly here at E! difficult-to-impossible unless I do every post from a Starbucks or some alternative source.

I figured this was a problem my fellow Elliquians had faced before, so I figured I'd ask you.  Proxies seem like the simplest solution, but if so, do you know which I aught to use?  Am I missing something quite obvious about masking where I go through their servers?  /Anyway/, appreciate all comments\suggestions/feedback/sharing of knowledge.

Personally, I've visited E while I was in the middle of class before. I did sit in the back so no one could look over my shoulder, but for real... no one typically cares what you do on the nets at College. (Also they won't have your password so they hypothetically wouldn't be able to access the restricted areas. *nods* Good luck at College!

When I visit E from my work computer, I tend to go into my settings on E and turn of avatars and signatures. I also avoid any threads where I know there will be inappropriate images. I also avoid certain threads where I know the topic of the thread is inappropriate (several of my games). I figure you could do something like that if you are worried about it at college. But Rogue is right, they don't have your password. Just turn off avatars and signatures if you're worried about people peeking over your shoulders.

Notsomuch peaking; the college itself's network is what I'll be using.  I'm assuming they will take issue if we use it to watch, say, terrabytes worth of porn a month.  Obviously E isn't pr0nz in the typical sense, but I lived in constant fear of them being called to the Principal's office and her being like "we know where you've been" and I'd probably die of embarrassment.  Not to mention my parents being told o.0

But I guess tracking all those people is hard, and doesn't really pay off.  Thanks for the help, though I'm still curious if there's a way to mask where I'm going as far as the network is concerned.

Good luck at College!

Thanx!  ;D

I think it depends on the college, I know some limit bandwidth.  Simple fact is, you are over 18. E is a site that does not violate US laws.  The school wants to give you a hard time, they can damn well show you where in the agreement you made with them that states you can't visit such sites. (There might be a morality clause in the contract you made with them but you could still fight that.)  I'd say don't worry about it.  Also, if they tell your parents, hit them up for violation of privacy and defamation of character.  You are over 18, your parents are no longer your legal guardians.  Unless you specifically grant permission, the school cannot tell your parents personal information about you.  Note, I am not a legal authority just going on best guess and common sense here.

If you're really uncomfortable about it, here's a list of public proxy servers.

Annonymouse is another one that I've used before.

But as others have said before, I'm almost positive you're not going to get slammed with anything. I also visit E on campus and our network requires that you log in with your unique student id. So if they cared to bother me about it they could, but they've never said anything to me about it. Not even an email asking me to refrain from visiting.

If you're connected via Wifi using your own personal computer there's really no way for them to track you down, whether they're monitoring the websites you visit or not. In any case, having worked for the technical department of a university before, I can pretty much promise you that they aren't watching. There are things far ahead of that on the list.

A number of people have provided proxies for you if you're that concerned about it, though.

I think you over estimate what most colleges are concerned about. If you suck up their bandwidth with torrent sites, then they'll probably care. If you are really concerned, they've probably provided you with Terms of Service for internet use, but again, a lot of college students use these kind of sites just fine.

If you're worried, use https everywhere and turn it on for Elliquiy.

Jezabelle

Thank you, everyone; my fears are quite assuaged finally.  I'yle probably keep this knowledge in my back pocket and just use https, thank you Veks for reminding me that's a thing :3.
