At this point, the aim of this thread is to check the interest for such a game. I basically combined the crossover genre concept from "Cowboys vs. Aliens" with the modern day Zombie craze.
The basic set-up of the plot is that - for reasons still unclear - the smaller communities and homesteads to the South-West of Crimson Springs have been overrun by Zombies.
Eventually the horde is large enough and has marched North-East far enough to reach the first decent-sized town in its path: Crimson Springs.
Basically I would like to start the game with a short prelude: the quiet before the storm if you will. Perhaps the final 24 hours before the Zombies arrive.
In this time, we can introduce the characters and all of the relevant areas of the town. Basically any role that would fit into a frontier town is allowed.
So a Sheriff, a Marshall, deputies, the saloon owner, a haberdasher, saloon girls/prostitutes, a blacksmith, a man/woman who runs a livery, ...

Shortly thereafter we move on to the next phase. Which will be the Zombies overrunning the town. The idea is for the townfolks to eventually fight back, once they realize what is happening. Whether or not they will be successful in repealing the Zombie attack will be decided - partially - on how it plays out IC.

If you have interest in joining such a game, feel free to leave a message here.
If enough people express an interest, I will compile a character sheet template.
The idea is for all PCs to be cowboys. The Zombies will be a nameless horde that is controlled by the GM.

If this game does get off the ground, I hope to start it somewhere in the week before or after Christmas. Mostly because my schedule should clear up a bit around that time.

Background info

Crimson Springs is a town in the New Mexico Territory. The latest population count had it at just over 400 residents. It lacks its own train station and thus still relies on the stagecoach.
The main sources of income in the area are cattle ranching and silver mines. The town is relatively prosperous and boasts all of the amenities one could expect in a town of its scale.
It functions as something of a hub to the smaller settlements and remote ranches towards the South-West. The townfolks are the usual mix one might find in a frontier town.
Early settlers who came there for the land to graze their cattle or try their lucks in the mines. Then the second wave of immigration, with store owners, saloon proprietors, doctors, clergymen, ... who come to provide their respective services to the new community. Eventually sprinkled by the usual assortment of chancers, gamblers and carpet baggers come to peck their share of the corn in any semi-prosperous town.

The IC action will start on the morning of April 30th, 1875. This was a Friday. The first Zombies will venture into town Saturday morning. So that would give us one full day to establish both Crimson Springs and the characters before the Zombie action starts.

Character sheet template

[float=right][/float]
Name:
Age:
Role: (This could be as simple or as elaborate as you'd like. Certain archetypes don't need much explanations (e.g. "ornery Sheriff"), others might be benefited with some more specificity).
Biography: (A short write-up of your characters past. Go back as far as you'd like. If possible, include how and when your character arrived in the area. Keep in mind that the earliest settlers only arrived in 1851 and the name of "Crimson Springs" as a proper town dates back to 1854. All significant growth population-wise would only have occurred after the Civil War ended.)

I do love me some cowboys, and zombies crawlin' up out of Boot Hill sounds like a high ol' time.    Depending on the particulars, I'm potentially interested.

I have never played RDR but I know other stuff like Call of Duty has Zombie expansions.

I like putting sci-fi stuff into older time periods. Makes me wish we could see a Predator movie set in whatever era they got that antique gun from they gave Danny Glover at the end of Predator 2.

He's not terrible to look at but he's one of my least favorite actors. I'll try not to let that bleed through with my character's interactions with him, LOL.

I was actually thinking of making a character like that of one from the Zombie Survival Guide's record attacks I mentioned. A Native American zombie hunter called Elijah Black, his story was one of the most fascinating in there. Would have been awesome if he could have been adapted into the author's next book, World War Z.

If we really want to go Cowboys vs. Aliens on this then it would make sense for a Native American or even parts of a tribe to be included, since zombies don't discriminate and therefore they have a mutual enemy. Plus even if the natives tried to warn the settlers of an oncoming horde of walking dead, they'd probably be laughed off and thought of as drunk, until it's too late...

I agree with historical accuracy. Pluss the we could try to use a bit of Native American legend and use the Windago as a unoficial explanation to these undead men and women. Or rather at least, the local natives think they are windagos. In fact I'd probably like to play a half white man half native American character. Someone that can have kind of a correspondent roll between the characters and possible native interactions.

I would say that the basic setting would be grounded in reality, up until the inclusion of the zombies.
The general tone would be more pulpy, if that makes sense.

So less TWD (which can be overly serious) and more (later) Romero.

Pulp and camp are awesome -- and I would also love to get away from the gloom and doom seriousness that is so much of the Walking Dead.  I loved the old Romero zombie movies, particularly the one where they were holed up in the mall.

Since they will overrun the town and kill quite a few of the townfolks, I'm guessing it will be more than a mere inconvenience.

Though I guess they will be used to the harshness of frontier life. Not to the extent that they would be blasé when the undead suddenly attack.

Sudden attack, got it!

I can't wait to shoot a zombie person and be all "I never liked him much anyway"

Gypsy

Wouldn't that depend on what you're afraid of?    I think there's always a fear and horror factor involved in the dead walking, from religious implications to the hope/crippling factor of having people you know and love that you have to 'kill', even if they're already dead.

Even a brave man who doesn't flinch at fighting outlaws might feel something different if someone he knows and has talked to suddenly rises up and tried to eat him.  :-)

But I'm glad to hear that you're not going for the more blase factor of D&D -- oh, a bunch of undead are coming.  Get the cleric out here!

I don't know what sorts of interest you might already have, but I was thinking something along the lines of a widow who owns the local mercantile/dry goods store, having inherited it after her husband's death.  She'd not be a timid sort, would have a rather colorful past, and would be very much prepared to defend herself, her property, and her town against whatever threat comes.

Name:Becky Farrah/Ransam Pride
Age:24
Role: Outlaw
Biography: A woman in these times has about as much rights as a horse. Sometimes less. So when Becky Farrah's husband got drunk, just about beat Becky half to death and she was forced to put a few new holes in that empty head of his, it was ruled as cold-blooded murder. Now, first Becky tried to defend herself from these accusations with words. She explained to Bill's friends and said he'd been mighty intoxicated, got powerful angry and mighty carried away. "Bill could hold his liqour!" they'd said, "Uppity bitch!" they'd called her, "Your fault to begin with!" they'd shouted. They were about to put Becky in her place, finish what Bill started. Well, Becky wasn't the kind of girl you could knock around. Bill found that out the hard way and right then and there, so did his friends. It came to blows and they did a number on 'ol Becky, one even cut her throat, but she was a tough woman to kill. It ended with those boys kissing the ground. Three more dead men on her doorstep. Around this time she decided it was probably a good idea to bail on the little town she'd called home. Just in the nick of time, too, because that evening the Sheriff stopped by Becky's place to question her about Bill's death. What he saw was three additional corpses, drying in the Texas heat.

Becky saw the wanted posters soon after. Fear of capture prompted her to change her name and style of dress. Having always admired female outlaws she chose the rather showy 'Ransam Pride' as her moniker (thought she misspelled 'ransom') and took up a red scarf and leather duster. Got herself a shotgun and a revolver for protection. Needed 'em, too. Hard for a woman to make it on her own out here. More 'misunderstandings' occured and they soon stopped being accidents. She turned sour and started to take delight in giving cruel men what was coming to 'em. The wanted posters for the smiling face of Becky Farrah soon disappeared, replaced with the hard scowl of Ransam Pride. Train robber. Bank robber. Man slayer. Damsel saver.

She's passing through Crimson Springs, just long enough to have a drink and then sit her tired hide in a real bed for one night before moving on. 'Ol Becky has no idea what kind of night she's in for. If the sheriff don't get her, the zombies just might.

Well I personally don't mind historical accuracy in that matter. It makes sense if people tend to be rascist, my character just won't be. I actually made a native American with race tensions in mind. Pluss i wanted to play the more wilderness savey and stealthy character like Darrel. Except rather then crossbow\bows my guy is more of a melee guy and weapon thrower.

I hated that one. The survivors just acted too foolishly to be believed at times. Like when they were out trying to park trucks in front of all the entrances, why the hell were they splitting up instead of working as a team? No wonder that one guy got bit. Also, what was the helicopter for? Not only did it waste fuel, serve no real purpose and potentially create enough noise and attention to attract both raiders and zombies from far off, but he could have been more useful on the ground with the other two.

Garuss, if I wanted to play another Native character, how would we go about that? Familiar? Not from the same tribe at all? Both from tribal villages or one or both having been somewhat or fully integrated into settler culture? Just curious. Don't even know which of us had the idea first.

Looking back you called it first however, I to see no reason for us not to both play one. My character is a half breed raised among the Navejo and specializes in melee and knife\tomahawk throwing. I chose the Navajo since, much of my knowledge in names, customes, and language extend to the navajo tribes and clans. So perhaps your character is from the Navajo as well. And if you have any historical, mythological or even cultural questions. I can answer them.

I was in fact thinking the local natives would be thinking that the zombies are their own mythological monster. The Wendago. However if that is acurate doesn't matter, it's just what the tribe would think they are.

I was going to be my version of Elijah Black, who had been trained or at least mentally prepared for this kind of thing since their superstitions just happened to line up exactly with this; I basically wanted to play a character who doesn't have any qualms about killing the familiar after they've reanimated, and who looks down on those who do as weak or foolish. Depending on the geographic breakdown of the various tribes, I may make him Navajo or some other tribe known to reside in the vicinity. But my guy would be more skilled with the bow and firearms so that could set our two apart.

I wasn't taking affront, more trying to figure out what the concern was exactly in terms of the historical aspects of the game.
I would say that the story is grounded in reality, though I will not be especially harsh in my appraisal of the CS.
So if a character could fit into a western story with a pulpy tone, you should be fine.

Speaking specifically about portraying a black character, yes, you can certainly expect the bigotry, racism, ... such an individual might have experienced at the time.
Of course, how your character will be treated will also depend on how the other PCs choose to treat him/her.
Just because society as a whole was virulently racist by modern standards does not mean that every individual would conform to this notion.

A general remark about the map: it would make sense if most of the (larger) buildings on Main Street are businesses like Kilkenny’s Dry Goods.
So think saloons, hotels, hardware store.

Anyone got any recommendations for a face claim of a Native American character? I'd sooner slit my wrists than look for any of the ones from the Twilight movies but I can't think of any others in the right age range.

It was easy for me as my character is only half native american. Though I do see how hard it may be for you. But as far as face claims go, sorry I dont really know. Perhaps just look up native american actors, or native Americans in general? Sadly there just is not many native american actors. Perhaps Adam Beach? The guy from Cowboys and Aliens.

How old, roughly, do you want the face claim to look?

This one's pretty good, I'll go with it. Thanks. I also disliked Cowboys vs. Aliens so I wasn't really thinking of using it as a source. Good call. If I ever get the chance to see A Million Ways to Die in the West that might also have a few new faces.

Anyone else who has a character sheet in the pipeline?
If so, let me know when/if you might be able to send it to me.

Im back in. *such an addict who doesnt know any better* X3

This game had a bit of a hiccup, what with RL rearing its head, but it's getting going again.  RedEve has graciously accepted my help with  a bit of co-GMing to spread out the load and time commitment a bit.

We've had a couple of players drop out, and things are going to start heating up quite soon, so this would be a great time to get involved so as not to miss anything.

If the thought of fighting zombies in the Old West is at all intriguing, throw in your hat, fire off a shot, or just let out a Yee Haw!  Or ... ya know ... just let us know what sort of character interests you and what you'd like to see in a game like this, and we'll see what we can do.

Male or female preference for new characters?

Gypsy

Of the current posting characters, I believe we have:

Doctor - female
Sheriff - male
Deputy - male
Storekeeper - female
Rancher - male
Outlaw - female
Farmer/Rancher - male

So either one, really, and there are still quite a few buildings / likely professions in the town that have yet to be filled.

Westerns always catch my eye. Color me interested!

And if the town is needing, I'd offer a female barkeep as my character. Every good dusty town needs a watering hole!

Gypsy

The Red Ruby Saloon doesn't have a barkeep as of yet, so that's certainly a possibility.  If you are interested, please email a concept to both RedEve and myself. :-)

Keep in mind that the earliest settlers only arrived in 1851 and the name of "Crimson Springs" as a proper town dates back to 1854. All significant growth population-wise would only have occurred after the Civil War ended.)

If I may make a suggestion, someone might want to add a link to the IC thread on the first page of this thread.  There is a link to the OOC thread and the Character thread, but no link to the IC thread, which I had no idea existed until I went to the OOC thread today.  So if anyone wonders why Seth hasn't done anything on the IC thread, it's because he didn't know there was an IC thread already in operation.  And I didn't bother visiting the OOC thread until today because I thought it wasn't going to be very active until the IC thread had been created.  Silly me!   :-[

Still accepting characters? How active is the cast? I noticed there were a couple of posts in just today, but before that some posters seem to be more sparse than others.

And while I'm at it, how far into the game is everyone? ^^

The game was quiet for a while due to my absence from the forum. It's recently started up again, thanks to GypsyRose's offer to co-GM.

So yes, we are still accepting characters.

We are not far along yet, the big bad has yet to be revealed, though there is the start of an event in the game right now that might give a first clue as to what is to come.

That's a rough format for the sheet.  Please PM your concept to RedEve and to me. :-)

Also, characters that are in town or close to town, and have a reason to work together will offer the best fit, so that the action isn't spread out over a wide area.

My character owns a cattle ranch on the outskirts of town.

If you want to be a ranch hand working for him. Unless you want to come in as a towns folk, most of the major roles are filled. Doc, Sheirff, Deputy and hired gun. We have an outlaw, saloon owner, general store owner. But there are many more roles to fill.

Ulysses is a vet of the civil war (fought on the south side but wasn't a slave owner)
He relocated with his remaining family after they lost it all in the war, settled the frontier. His family passed, wife died, leaving him a widower. But the ranch remains.
