Concept

This is a neo-noir concept inspired by a "what if True Detective meets Hotel Babylon" thought (ie police detective fiction meets hotel drama fiction). I do not in any case expect anyone to roleplay police characters super accurately just like I do not expect people to roleplay hotel staff super accurately either. However, a minimum of common sense is expected. The police in this fictional setting IS potentially corruptible. Every character is neither all good or all bad, there are gray areas everywhere.

There is going to be a main plot driving the story forward regarding a crime being committed, however this game is sandbox/freeform, meaning you can almost do whatever you want in the setting. Do keep in mind that almost every character in this game will be related to the crime one way or another. The majority of accepted guests' characters will have relatively weak alibis (e.g. "I was in my room"), while staff characters even those with strong alibis, will be heavily part of the investigation, and of course SFPD characters will investigate. In other words, most characters will have connections with at least a portion of all the characters so that every participant will be able to roleplay with others. If however, you'd be interested in the game, but really don't want your character to be overly involved with the investigation (ie more into the sandbox part), depending on the character sheet, I might allow a strong alibi that will write them off right away.

Setting

This game is set in The Blake Hotel San Francisco, a fictional 4-star hotel in San Francisco, California, USA. Located near Powell Street Station and Union Square, the hotel hosts a variety of middle to high income guests throughout the year, most of which are tourists and business people. The hotel comprises a total of 44 rooms, 4 of which are suites located in the 6th floor. The Millennium Pub is also located within the hotel, where it is possible for guests to have a bite to eat and drinks. A pool is located in the yard next to the lobby which also features a jacuzzi. Finally, a fitness center is also located in the hotel, on the ground floor.

The Blake Hotel San Francisco also has staff rooms, a staff office, staff canteen, business rooms, a manager office and a hotel laundry.

The game will be roleplayed up to 3 days before the murder and a week after the murder from Tuesday 4 June 2019 to Friday 14 June 2019.

Premise

7 June 2019

  • 11:26 AM - The corpse of Howard Newton was discovered in Room 402 by General Manager Violet Park when she entered the room after knocking on the door multiple times to inform Newton he was meant to check out by 11:00 AM.
  • 11:27 AM - Violet Park calls the police and reports the crime before informing her staff
  • 11:45 AM - The police arrives and officers seal off room 402, with crime scene detectives investigating the room
  • 12:03 PM - SENIOR DETECTIVE and JUNIOR DETECTIVE start taking statements from employees and gathering intel on guests and video camera footage in the meantime
  • 1:57 PM - Crime scene detectives explain their findings to the SENIOR DETECTIVE and JUNIOR DETECTIVE
  • 2:11 PM - Newton's corpse leaves the hotel and is brought to the SFPD's medical examiner
  • 3:39 PM - The medical examiner sends the detectives their autopsy report which includes the estimated time of death and cause of death

*The autopsy report will be sent by PM to the two detective characters*

Characters

There will be three types of characters possible: hotel employees, hotel guests and SFPD officers.

The victim will be an NPC controlled by the GM as well as a few temporary police NPCs such as the medical examiner.

Additional staff and police character slots may open up depending on interest or if people leave.

The character limit per person will be 3 to start off and might be increased in the future depending on interest.

Keep in mind that guests at hotels aren't usually alone, so there can be couples, families, coworkers traveling together sharing a two-beds room, etc.

Relevant Bay Area Facts To Consider When Making A Staff Character's Background

Hispanic/Asian characters would be welcomed for staff and police, as combined they represent almost 50% of the Bay Area's demographics (each about ¼ of total pop). According to 2010 census data, 42.4% of the Bay Area residents were "Non-Hispanic Whites", 23.5% were Hispanic residents of any race (17.9% Mexican), 23.3% were Asian (7.9% Chinese, 5.1% Filipino, 3.3% Indian, 2.5% Vietnamese), 6.7% were Black people, 5.4% were Multiracial, and the remaining comprised a variety of other ethnicities/racial identities.

Expectations

Real life always comes first. Please notify the people involved and/or the GM on the OOC chat or by PM or other means if you plan on not posting for more than a week.

Regarding activity and post expectations, a minimum of 1 post per week will be expected.

Be patient with other writers, respectful, the usual, etc. I'm not gonna babysit anyone.

Regarding The Setting

There is only going to be one murder in this game. I don't want a serial killer, I don't want somebody trying to hijack the premise or shift the general story towards random stuff. For the vast majority of characters involved, the murder will be background noise, a conversation starter, a small spice in their ordinary lives. There might be one or two culprits, no more, and they could be staff, guests or police, none of you will know until the investigation is concluded and if they get the right suspect(s).

Do not add anything related to the murder in your character sheets, think of them as what your character is like on 4 June 2019 when the roleplay starts.

If you are interested in your character being the murderer (or one of them, if there's a joint proposal, usually one murder and one accomplice), please mention it in a separate PM to me.

Regarding The Victim

Characters can have relations with the victim, they can be one of his coworkers, they can befriend during their stay, etc. One possible character is Newton's wife, which would fly over to SF later on, if that interests anyone.

Howard Newton's Character Sheet
HOWARD NEWTON (NPC - MURDER VICTIM)

NAME: Howard Newton
BIRTH AND AGE: 12 February 1966 (Age 53)
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6'3" (1.91 m) / 203 lbs (92 kg)
HAIR COLOR: Gray/Blond
EYE COLOR: Brown
ETHNICITY: European-American (ie White/Caucasian)
DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Taller than average, receding hairline

FACE CLAIM: Noah Emmerich

BIRTHPLACE: Boston, MA, USA
RESIDENCE(S): New Canaan, CT, USA
OCCUPATION: Businessman (assumed)
ROOM AND LENGTH OF STAY: Room 402 - 4 June 2019 to 7 June 2019 (3 nights)
HOBBIES: Sex, alcohol, cocaine, fishing, rowing
DISLIKES: His wife's old age and depreciating beauty, cold weather, homeless people in the city, affirmative action, feminism

PERSONALITY:
Newton is a rather typical suburban father of two children with comfortable income and a rich family. An Ivy League graduate, the social life there made him a man and shaped his future personality, full of confidence and privileges. He is used to have what he wants and usually does not take no for an answer. He has an eye for business and making money, which brought him where he was, but his main weakness is women. Newton has never been faithful to his wife, which is more of a trophy wife than anything from his perspective. He likes them young and submissive. Newton is a showoff, he likes to wear expensive suits and has a suave allure about him. He is nevertheless a traditionalist, treating those he considers below him as of little importance, which includes most hotel staff and other guests that appear to make less money than him. If someone's net worth his higher than his, he will respect them. That, however, only applies to men. He shamelessly objectifies women and uses them to get physical rewards.

BACKGROUND:
Newton was born in Boston and grew up in New England, eventually attending Yale, graduating without any student debt thanks to his family, and started working in New York City. He met his wife while working, actually, as she was one of his first secretaries. They married a few months later and not long after their first child was born. As Newton received promotions and climbed the success ladder in the city that never sleeps, the family moved to a more affluent suburb in Connecticut. He traveled to San Francisco on a business trip for his portfolio management firm, H&J Limited, meeting with important clients in the tech industry.

LANGUAGE(S) SPOKEN: Monolingual English speaker

GOSSIP:

  • Known to look inappropriately at female hotel staff and make indecent suggestions
  • Spent considerable time at the Millennium Pub during his stay
  • Usually went out early in the morning and came back to the hotel at around 8:00 PM
  • Kept his room relatively clean during his stay

Others
Submit characters by PM to me for approval. Those posted on this thread will be ignored. No staff position, room number or SFPD job will be reserved without a sheet. In that sense, it is first come first serve until sheet approval, however you may decide or may not to respect a "gentlemen's rule of intent" on taking a certain job for your character in this thread. I - however - will not respect it. People come and say they're interested in a game and then don't ever show up after, so I want to avoid someone "claiming" a story-important job like a detective and then disappearing. If there is a lot of interest for limited jobs such as detectives, I might adjust their numbers and we can always figure something out in a civilized manner.

Sexual orientation, gender identity, pronouns, etc. can be included in Character Background on their sheet if you want to include that information or anything else that you think is relevant.

*Disclaimer:* I've never worked or studied in management, hospitality or in law enforcement, so I'm pulling all this info out of my limited and possibly erroneous mind and what I could find. The staff schedule is completely made up, and a fair amount of overtime will be expected at times I would assume.

Hey Sakky, glad to see you here  :-) It is first come first serve, so there is no calling dibs on a position without a sheet submitted to me. I am open to add more detectives if many people want to have a detective character, though, so I wouldn't worry. Looking forward to see what you come up with.

It does! Thanks for the interest  C:)

If you both have any face claim in mind that you'd like to reserve, I can add them to the face claim directory as well. Note that Dianna Agron has been claimed already.

Going to be watching this.

I am not sure I have time for another game right now so can't plant a flag, but oh-my-freakin this looks great.  If I realize empty space on my card I'll be back here so quick.  Awesome job.

Lovely Complex

I've also finished the autopsy report (to be sent to players with Accepted Characters in the SFPD category) and will add a few more details with regard to the crime. The killing method (ie cause of death and estimated time of death) is predetermined by me, the GM, which I admit, limits the creativity of writers interested in the murderer role, but there is a reason for that. It needs to be done a certain way for the investigation to be broad and comprising several potential suspects and thus involving as many characters as possible. However, the motive(s) for the crime is/are still and will always be unknown, only to the murderer(s), as well as key elements of the MO (modus operandi) besides the actual cause of death.

Anyone that's interested can still hit me up to be the murderer(s) (refer to the info written above), it can be staff, guest or cop, there are plenty of possibilities.

Autumn Atwood joined the cast as a guest, roleplayed by Foxy Oni. Bella Thorne and Timothy Dalton were added to the Face Claim Directory.

Reminder that if anyone wants to reserve face claims, they may do so here or send me a PM.

And I throw my hat into the ring with the sweet and gentle and perfectly humble mr Kenneth Wainright. Looking forward to seeing how this game pans out!

Well, now I want to know what people are submitting for so I don’t trip over anyone. :)

There are currently 5 accepted characters, 4 of which are guests and 1 is staff, occupying the General Maintenance position.

Somebody else submitted for a police officer position.

Lady Sakura stated her interest for the Senior Detective position above. Somebody else stated their interest for Junior Detective position by PM.

You may - or may not - respect these people's intent, it is up to you. As previously stated in the opening post of this thread, it is first come first serve, and a spot will only be reserved once a character sheet is approved. More detectives may be added if need be.

I am also flexible on staff positions, as the General Maintenance position was not a thing until Tokyorose627 suggested it to me, for instance. If anyone wants to make a laundry attendant, or any other hotel staff role not listed above, you can suggest it to me.
