Marvel
End Crisis

End Crisis is a unique story line that takes place on Earth-8246. This story line will feature elements from the entire Marvel Universe, however playable characters will focus mainly on characters from the X-Men line. Aside from base concepts, you should consider no printed material canon for the purposes of this setting.

"Ha," She chuckled stiffly to herself, "I had partners once," She replied. Faded green hues looked to the unlit cigarette in her hands; her head shook enough to toss her locks from side to side as she flicked out a lighter and blazed the end of the paper wrapped tobacco stick and placed it between her lips. She took a deep drag from it until near an inch of it fell off and blew away as ash in the wind that ripped through the crumbled building they were standing in. "I was there you know, with them when it happened." She murmured, holding the cigarette out between her and the one who had approached her. She stared long and hard at the burning embers of the tip as it slowly seared away. "I got to see up close and personal what that bastard can do," Her voice trembled, a wince rolled over her features, "Do you know what he did to them? What he did to Charles?" Her eyes welled as her voice cracked, the quivering had taken to her whole body. She steeled herself and pulled the guilty pleasure to her lips, dragging on it again hard.

"Charles was the best man I've ever known, and..." She trailed off while chewing on her lower lip and contemplating her thoughts; plagued by even the notion of willingly revisiting the memories that haunted her sleeping hours. "We were the good guys. Like you only less flashy about it." She said with a gentle smirk a reached out rap her knuckles ever so lightly against the metal shell that protected him. "We were the X-Men!" She said with mock enthusiasm, "We'd tussled with dozens of other mutants and protected this world and its people." She mused, flicking more ash into the wind and turning her gaze to the rubble around them. "Look how well we did this time." Her words were punctuated by the frown that took to her lips, "This one was... This one was personal. Charles was so damn insistent that we meet them, that we deal with this." She said through gritted teeth. Her free hand came up and ran through her long locks, brushing through it with frustration. "If he'd... He was always so calm, so composed. So damn wise. We should have known something was off about this, but what were we supposed to do? That man took half of us in and raised us. Made sure we didn't let the world swallow us, or worse, let us destroy ourselves. He forged us!" She exclaimed.

"So when he said we were going to deal with it, none of us even batted an eyelash. We just put on the spandex and got in the jet, no questions asked." She admitted.

She set the cigarette between her lips and lightly puffed on it as she turned her head back to look at the giant floating island in the sky. "Like any other bad guy he wanted to monologue us to death. Charles wasn't ready to let it go and so we engaged. All of us, the whole team. Us against Imperius. We'd fought lopsided battles before, this wasn't the first time we'd been outnumbered or out gunned but... Not like this. It was like he knew what was coming. He was toying with us and we couldn't stop it. Then he set his attention on Charles, and well, then it got real bad." She said, her foot lifting and setting down to crush the still burning cigarette beneath her boot. "Imperius popped his head like a grape. He just grabbed on and squeezed. Just like that, he was gone." Tears rolled freely down her face, she didn't even attempt to cover them up at that point. "My friends... My family... We were wiped out. I don't even know who all survived the encounter up there."

Slowly she turned away from him and stuffed her hands into the jacket that covered her, "I heard you guys didn't fair much better. So much for Earth's Mightiest Heroes, huh? And you wanna try again," She said with a broken, hollow laugh. "Sorry Stark, not interested. The Rogue you're looking for died up there with Charles and the rest of the X-Men." She finally answered before walking away.

End Crisis takes place in 2027, eight years after The Obsidian Throne entered Earth's atmosphere and the mutant known as Imperius laid siege to the world. The defenses of Earth are gone; civilization lays mostly in ruin. It's a dark, cold, shadow of the world that people once knew. Many of the largest cities have been reduced to rubble, standing as graveyards and historic fields of battle where the forces of earth lost ground time and time again to their new master. Powerful groups once stood to defend the world against threats just like this: The X-Men, the Avengers, and others. They're gone now. Broken apart and shattered by the war that has ravaged the entire planet. As the plight of the world grew deeper and darker those old factions that had once stood against one another had no choice but to band together and struggle together against this impossible invader. Rivals and outright enemies found themselves on the same side, bound by the combined knowledge that their individual struggles were secondary to this ever looming threat.

Humanity now exists as what amounts to a slave race. They exist because Imperius allows them to; his forces are everywhere and when the sound of rebellion begins to echo they are quick to extinguish it. Many of the greatest, most powerful heroes of the world have been killed or been lost and are unaccounted for.

However hope, if it can be called that, yet exists. When the Avengers were defeated, Iron Man - Tony Stark - managed to get away and go deep underground where be built The Iron Compound. From this secret base, he began recruiting a league of new heroes to rise up against this tyrant. Under his leadership a new resistance has been formed, one that, hopefully, can one day take the fight directly to The Obsidian Throne and deal with Imperius directly. That goal is a long way off, though, as many heroes are new to this job, and recruitment is a slow process.

This is a game about survival, struggle against impossible odds, and bringing hope back to a broken world. The remaining older heroes have known as brutal a war as Earth has ever seen; the young heroes are inheriting a place that has been torn asunder and is already under the thumb of a seemingly insurmountable villain. These are truly the darkest of times. Humanity is crippled and looks to the shadows for the fleeting glimmers of light brought by the resistance, who always has to act with the knowledge that they could make things worse if they're not careful. Casualties are common and every mission is a risk. Old heroes must pass on their wisdom and knowledge to the newer generation, leading them forward while doing everything they can to protect them; while younger heroes have to learn quickly and adapt to a situation that they're hardly prepared to handle. The characters in End Crisis will be pitted against odds that are stacked against them, and they must be clever as well as powerful to out maneuver the forces of Imperius. They must grow and ascend to new heights of they ever hope to free the world from the clutches of their greatest enemy. They may even find that they need to make unusually, even distasteful, moral sacrifices to accomplish their goals.

It is imperative that players remember that characters will experience victory, but they will also experience defeat. The purpose of this game is not to humiliate anyone, but the premise of the game is survival against what seems to be insurmountable odds. The heroes have been clinging to survival for a long time now and fighting a losing war. This is the last real attempt at turning things around, and it will not always be perfect. Consequences will be real, and you will be expected to play with them.

Character Creation

There are a few very simple steps to creating a character for End Crisis. Part of creation involves a few very basic numbers, and it is important to note that this game uses no system and no rolling. These numbers are simply to create general guidelines for well-defined characters that can be compared for GM sake and have clear points of improvement as the game progresses. When you first decide to make a character you will need to decide what kind of character it is, and for that, you have four options:

  • Canon: Characters from the canon category represent established characters from the X-Men franchise. Remember that these need not be 'good guys', as in this setting both sides have more or less come together to some degree to handle the much bigger issue that is Imperius - this means characters that are traditionally associated with organizations like The Brotherhood are available for play. Playing a character from this category is the most preferred method, and it involves playing someone like Storm, Cyclops, Toad, or Magneto, as their concept appears from the comics.

  • Reimagined: Next to canon characters, reimagined characters are the next most preferred characters. These characters take basic concepts and apply them to new people so that you can use a concept but your own spin on it. This might involve playing Cyclops as someone other than Scott Summers, or an Iron Man that isn't Tony Stark. The idea of a reimagined characters is to keep the powers and style of a character while not playing a canon person.

  • Expanded Marvel: This universe takes place in a full Marvel setting, meaning that all characters are technically around in some shape or form. However, it is the intent that most players focus on characters from the X-Men franchise. This is not a hard rule and we may approve some characters from the expanded marvel universe - but these approvals will be few and far between. Characters created from this category will be somewhat monitored.

  • Original Character: The final option for character creation, and the least preferred is for you to introduce your entirely unique character concept. In some ways, these characters will be more applicable than Expanded Marvel characters, but they will be much more monitored to ensure that they are not destroying to limiting other options in the game. To be clear we're happy to see original characters, but we want to make sure that they aren't outshining canon and reimagined characters which should be the focus of the game. It is possible that we will prevent Original Characters from starting the game as mentors, but that will depend on a number of factors and can't be said for certain at this time.

Next you will need to pick if your character is a Veteran or a Rookie. End Crisis will utilize a team mechanic. This means a couple things; first and foremost it means that your character will be part of a team and have initial connections with at least a few of the other characters in the game. Veterans are rarer, so from a gameplay perspective the number of mentor characters will be kept lower than the Rookie's by a fairly large margin - this won't be handled first come first serve, and instead we will attempt to accommodate everyone's preferences as much as possible. Next, it is important from a narrative perspective; many of the old heroes are gone, or missing - to this end, it's important that not everyone start out as Mega Badass. At this stage of creation, it becomes very important for you to understand that even if you are playing a canon character that nothing from the comics is canon; this means that if you want to play a Jubilee that is significantly more powerful and a Veteran level character you can. It also means that you can take an extremely experienced character and make them less so, like playing a Rookie version of Magneto for instance. If you are only interested in playing a very brand new recruit that has not been defined as a Veteran or Rookie yet, and is not integrated into the resistance yet you must discuss it with me beforehand. These characters will be exceedingly rare in approval, please try to avoid this at all costs.

  • Veteran: Veteran characters represent the older heroes that remain. They have managed to struggle by despite the war and roll with it as difficult as that has been. They function as the team leaders for the resistance, and they report directly to Tony Stark. Veteran's are a precious resource for the resistance, as not only do they represent the upper levels of power available but they are also the only ones available to teach the newer generation and help rally people together to form something more cohesive than a ragtag bunch of new recruits. Each Veteran will be responsible for a team of two to three Rookies - this is non-negotiable as it is a key element to the game. As a Veteran, you gain a free point in each stat. Veteran characters can be no lower than Class 3, and no higher than Class 2 to start with.
  • Rookie: These may not all be the definition of fresh meat, but they are definitively less experienced than the mentors. These range from the less experienced, less trained characters to those characters who are just emerging as heroes or just discovering their powers and trying to join the fray. Almost certainly these characters are younger than their Veteran counterparts. Each Rookie will be part of a team with 2-3 other people, including a Veteran team leader - this is non-negotiable as it is a key element to the game story. As a Rookie, you gain a free point in one stat of your choice. Rookie characters can be as low as Class 5, but no higher than Class 3 to start with.

Once you have selected what status your character will be it's time for you to determine their class. Class is a representation of a lot of factors, such as their skill, power, training, experience, knowledge, and more. Class is only one factor in the overall strength of a character, not the end all be all determination. As a general rule, you should assume that any character of an equal class has a fifty-fifty chance of beating any other character in that same class. As player vs player confrontation should be very minimal these last two steps are mostly for GM purposes and you should not be deterred by them. You don't have to memorize rules, deal with them in the game, or roll any dice. In the end, Class is merely a broad representation of all the power factors of a character combined - higher class characters are more powerful than lower ones, but not so much so that one class above makes a world of difference. As the game progresses and your character develops your Class will likely change. We will loosely be monitoring the overall class of the game to ensure that not everyone is the highest available class - this will only be addressed if it becomes a clear cut problem. As you increase in Class you gain the non-point related bonuses from the classes below yours.

  • Class 5: Increase your fighting by 1. Divide 6 points across the stats however you want. No stat may be higher than 6.
  • Class 4: Increase your power by 1. Divide 7 points across the stats however you want. No stat may be higher than 7.
  • Class 3: Increase your willpower by 1. Divide 8 points across the stats however you want. No stat may be higher than 8.
  • Class 2: Increase a stat by 1. Divide 9 points across the stats however you want. No stat may be higher than 9.
  • Class 1: This class is unavailable for characters at this time.
  • Class 0: This class is unavailable for characters at this time.
  • Class X: This class is unavailable for characters.

Finally after you have determined all of the other factors it's time for you to assign the numbers. Remember that these are primarily for GM use, and will never come up on your end. Do not let these numbers intimidate you because they will work purely behind the scenes and there are no bad choices. End Crisis uses three very basic stats to represent the skill and power of a character. Outside of extraordinary circumstances, stats are measured on a scale of 0-10; they are also influenced slightly by class - which is to say that a Fighting 5 of a Class 3 character is slightly superior to the Fighting 5 of a Class 4 character and slightly worse than the Fighting 5 of a Class 2 character. As a general rule higher numbers mean better in those aspects, while lower numbers mean worse; don't over think it.

  • Fighting: This stat represents a characters general physical prowess. It represents their strength, their agility, but more importantly, it represents their ability to engage in combat - be it hand to hand, ranged, melee, or otherwise. This is self-monitored (just because a character has a Fighting 10 doesn't mean they're a master of every fighting art form ever, it means they excel at whatever their focus is). Likewise, a character with fighting 10 doesn't mean they have Hulk level strength, but it does mean they're trained to the point they are decidedly stronger than someone with a Fighting 6. This is your general physical stat, and if you want to engage in hands-on combat this is where you want to focus.
  • Power: Is the scale on which your powers are rated. This determines things like the raw power of your abilities. Offensive characters deal more damage, utility effects have greater range and effect, support characters and affect more people or create stronger defenses, control characters can exert more detrimental debuffs, etc etc. This determines the overall strength of powers, what they can plausibly do and how they match up against other powers. Additionally this stat affects a characters ability to continuously utilize their power, as it draws on their reservoirs of power; basically, the higher this stat the freer a character can be with their abilities.
  • Willpower: Determines the mental resilience of a character and determines how they are affected by mental powers. Willpower is also representative of a character's ability to shrug off unwanted effects, see through illusions, and deal with a variety of circumstances that they may find themselves in. Primarily this is a defensive stat, but it also includes things like fine control of powers and in some cases can be used to determine psychic potency.

It is at this point that it becomes important to remember that these numbers are meant to give a clear indication to the GM when results need to be determined. They are not meant to be player limitations, and logic wins out against numbers in virtually all cases. These numbers are not intended to break the spirit of a power, ability, or the skill of a character but rather to put something in place to judge them by. Wolverine has a healing factor that allows him to recover from virtually anything, making him a character that is undefeatable outside extreme or particularly tailored circumstances; it is no good for anyone to have a god running around. The spirit of his regeneration is that he can recover quickly from wounds and that he can get up many times against brutal impacts that others could not - we can preserve that (provided you do invest in power somewhat) to maintain the intent of the power; but there is no way to account for endless self-regeneration and it frankly breaks the ability to create interesting and dynamic encounters and situations. Wolverine will never be stopped by a single bullet, but enough of them over a short enough time period might do enough damage he needs to deal with before he can proceed. This means there will always be some alteration to the way canon powers work, but that is universal to all characters and intentional so that every character can have a chance to shine and we don't have a number of people running around that are just the extreme end of imbalanced. A notation to this is that abuse of the 'logic vs numbers' rule will not be tolerated. Wolverine has an extreme regeneration and it is expected that he invest heavily in his Power to represent that fact. He doesn't get to survive bombs with a Power 1 because he's Wolverine and that's in the spirit of the character.

Notes & Info
  • Posting Rate: We will be looking for at least one post per week in main threads, in addition to whatever side fun you decide to take part in.
  • Character Limit: As we gather interest in the game it is our intent to limit people to a single character. This limit will be increased to two in the early parts of the game, once as many people as possible have had a chance to select from a broad range of characters. It is possible to look at creating a third character later in the game.
  • Unavailable Characters: Charles Xavier (Deceased), Thor (Deceased), Hulk (Captured), Captain America (Missing), Havok (Captured), Emma Frost (Missing), Apocalypse (NPC), Thanos (NPC), Galactus (NPC), Deadpool (Unavailable). Further you should stay away from the really major villains (on the scale of those listed here), this list isn't all encompassing but we reserve the right to deny a character and add them to this list if we feel they are best served as a GM antagonist.
  • Character Sheet: Once sufficient interest in the game has been gathered we will release the full character sheet for people to fill out. Character sheets should be submitted to Wispyr with the subject line: End Crisis - Character Name - Please do not neglect proper subject for PMs.

Once you gave determined that you are interested in playing and you want a character reserved for you, you will need to fill out the code below and post it into this thread. A character will not be reserved for you until all sections of the below code have been filled out and posted.

No need to post these if you haven't figured everything out that you plan to use. <3

As a point of clarification:

The timeline of End Crisis does not at all match the more canon comic book stuff. Even if you use a canon character you're going to need to change some information for the purposes of this game. For instance, in this setting Charles Xavier never built an institute for higher learning. He was never crippled. The X-men were a group he built up of people he took in and raised and helped them, but it was never bigger than the team and was more Avengers-esque in design.

So when you're building your characters, you're welcome - encouraged, and in some places required - to alter your history to sort of figure out what this person has been doing and how they've gotten to where they are.

General Info: A young man brought up in the house of God, taught to treat his powers as gifts rather than powers from mutation.  Raised by monks until the end of times came, Aras escaped from those who had given him shelter in his youth in search of a better cause.  His nature lead him to become a travelling healer on his route, leading him to contact the crew and be brought in as a potential member.  More details can be given once the official character sheet goes up.

Ability would be supportive; he can intake in viral, bacterial and other forms of sickness from others into himself, giving them to himself instead and taking the burden of illness for others, hence the name.  Can also use the bacteria on his hands to leave burns on those when in contact with the skin of another person as a last resort of defense.
