What made you choose your screen name?

Hi everyone! :D I saw that there was a topic about what made people choose their current avatars, and I thought it would be fun to begin a thread about what made us choose our particular screen names. :-) Does it have a particular significance? Is it a reflection of you or your characters? Have you used it before, and if so, for how long? Basically, share anything you like about your screen name (providing you remember to keep it PG-13 here). ;D

I'll start! :-) I chose Songbird for my screen name for many reasons. First, I love watching and feeding birds, as well as listening to their songs. I've always had a soft spot for birds, and a find the symbolic differences between a wild bird and a caged bird to be fascinating. Few things make me happier than catching sight of a bird I have never before seen in person.

Second, I love music and love to sing, and nearly all of my characters reflect this. Most of my characters love to sing, and my favorite character class in Dungeons & Dragons is Bard. :-)

Third, "Songbird" is the name of a character I've been developing for some time, but have yet to use. She is an innocent and beautiful girl with angelic wings who has lived most of her life within a giant birdcage, jealously kept away from the outside world by a being she only knows as "Master." She has never seen his face, and only glimpses his hands when he requires her magic. Her voice has the power to heal wounds and reverse the effects of aging, and the Master comes to where she is hidden whenever he needs healing or has begun to age. She is very curious about the outside world, and when she is at last freed by an adventurer, she accompanies him. Unfortunately her extreme innocence and kindness often gets them into trouble, and her Master is determined to get her back. Just what she is,why she has a magical voice, and the true identity of her Master is a mystery.

Songbird is a fairly new screen name for me, as I've only used it on one other forum. However, I think it suits me perfectly, and I have no plans of changing it. :-)

Caeli

I abused Behind The Name. :-)

I wanted a name that reflected a part of my personality, but was also 'romantic' and 'innocent', also 'quiet'. I wanted something that sounded more like a name, and less like an internet handle.

I'm a romantic and a dreamer, and I've also always had a fascination for skies, stars, and the heavens and celestial beings. Eventually, with these thoughts in mind, I went hunting around on this etymology site, and came up with my name for Elliquiy.

Caeli, derived from Caelestis
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Late Roman
Meaning & History: Late Latin name which meant "of the sky, heavenly".
Variant: Caelestinus
Other Languages: Celestine (English), Céleste, Célestin (French), Celeste, Celestino (Italian), Celestyn (Polish), Celestino (Portuguese), Celestino (Spanish)

Aisling
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Irish
Pronounced: ASH-ling
Meaning & History: Means "dream" or "vision" in Irish Gaelic. This name was created in the 20th century.
Variants: Ashling, Aislin, Aislinn

So loosely, my username might loosely mean "heavenly dreamer" ? Yes, I know. Full of romantic, fluffy cheese. ;D

I think we've actually had an iteration of this topic come up multiple times...

* Caeli does a bit of searching.

Aha, here are two of them. One created by Ziggy Speldust, probably back around the time Elliquiy started coming into existence. And this was the thread I remembered post in previously, started by Haibane.

Machete

firescorpion121 comes from my mistake in thinking I'm a Scorpio due to there being thirteen constellations in the zodiac combined with the sum of my six-digit birth date.

Machete, on the other hand, comes from the film and character, which come from the knife.

Koren

Mine is quite simple really

When I first joined I had the name Kora, for the simple fact that I liked the name, especially spelt with a K. Then when I changed it I didnt want it too far removed because I didnt want to make it difficult on people so I removed the -a and added -en instead. Hence Koren. Hahaha

Its amazing, I put such incredible amounts of thought into my characters name and yet practically none went into my screen name

Jag

Mine came from my screen name at Gaia Online, which I came here to escape. I got it for my Gaia name because it was the name of my then favorite song by Psycho le Cemu. I've been considering shortening it to just 'Michi' since that is what most people know me by and it confuses me when a new person calls me 'Sora'. Not much thought went into it, honestly...but at least I can link pretty pictures from the music video to it:

Sasquatch421

Sasquatch421: Well I like having my hair long, so my family started teasing me about being a domesticated sasquatch and I picked up the nickname and ran with it. The 421 is the number of the Strormtrooper in Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope. I just changed the TK to my nickname and bam....

The other user name I used to use a lot was Lestat69_99... Well you can probably guess my favorite Anne Rice character from it. The 69 was well I'm sure you can guess that as well, and the 99 is when I had first started using it...

Observing Trifles

I chose the name when I was in a rush to create a profile on another roleplaying forum. I had no idea what name to use, because I hadn't created a new one in a long time, so I snatched the title of a song I had recently downloaded. Brilliant Days. by DaizyStripper.

Callie Del Noire

Callie Del Noire.. it's a character stuck in my head that won't go away. :D

I got a few alias like that. Kyriee (aka Kyrie) Ebonblade (On wow, in DND and else where), Rhea Twiceborn, Kyle Phillips (my d20 Modern character), Ryland Ro (EVE Online/Star Wars), and so on.

Chris Brady

This is my real name, I don't feel like hiding behind a nickname on this site.
My O&Os Peruse at your doom.

So I make a A&A thread but do I put it here?  No.  Of course not.

Also, I now come with Kung-Fu Blog action.  Here:  Where I talk about comics and all sorts of gaming

Beorning

My screen name is from Tolkien. Also, in a very conceptual way that only my mind can probably see, it's related to the place I live in :)

ElusiveM00se

This is my second internet handle. I have another one that I use quite often that has been identifiable to me since the late 90's. I've been using this one for only 2-3 years, in places that I didn't feel like carrying over my other more "public" handle.

The story of my screen name comes from the fact that for many, many years, I've had an obsession with moose. I think they're cute, and I have a whole bunch of silly moose trinkets and figures. (Dragons are still my spirit animal of choice). Yet neither my mother nor I have ever actually seen a real live moose in person. Therefore - elusive moose. I wanted to make it more "internet-friendly" so I use zero's for the "o"s in moose.

And so ElusiveM00se was born.

BlightRaptor

Mine was the result of my brother and I shooting back random hypothetical Mega Man X boss names, which typically are "Power + Animal = Boss" with some exceptions. For example Gravity Beetle was a robot beetle that could create black holes. I threw out Blight Raptor, a black and purple velociraptor that had the ability to decompose any material.

I started using this name for various RPGs, keeping the reptile theme in tact when possible. For instance, I created a Skyrim character who I referred to as "Blight: The Argonian Inquisition." Eventually this became my unofficial alias on the internet as well as my unofficial fursona (or in this case a big black and purple scaley.) And so here I am!

Moraline

I was playing World of Warcraft at the time and this was the name of my primary character in game so I just used it.

Now... the reason I choose the name in the first place was because it was a friend's name when I was young. I always thought her name was pretty and just decided to use it. I think it was originally an old name from her family (It was like Irish or something.)  I've never been able to find an actual history of the name online.

Silverfyre

"Silverfyre" was the last name of my first D&D character and I liked the name, as well as the nostalgia attached to it, that I decided to use it online.  I have used it extensively for the last seventeen years or so, on a variety of roleplaying and social sites.  I have a handful of other gaming related tags I use but the Silverfyre one tends to be my primary one.

Silver

...Because I hate all things Gold...

No but seriously, the name Silver for me is a nickname that I also have in RL. I am a lover of all things silver and gray; also a firm believer in the Symbolism related to the word.

QuotePrime symbolism of silver deals with the moon and as such it is an attribute of feminine energy.

Chaldeans referenced silver by the female name of Nanna.

Rosicrucian alchemists attributed silver to the goddesses Artemis (Greek).

Renaissance alchemists divined with silver using Diana’s (Roman) personification.

Arabic alchemists invoked the feminine name of Manat when working with silver as an alchemical symbol.

Some quick symbolic meanings of silver:

Purity
Clarity
Awareness
Focus
Single-ness of Purpose
Femininity
Persistence
Vision
Strength

Silver is symbolic of such attributes as awareness, clarity, and vision because of its bright/clear appearance.

Silver is a symbol for strength because this metal withstands abuse, weathering, and even heat.  Nevertheless, it can still be molded into desired forms.

This is symbolic of a subtle strength.  The message here is that we ourselves can be flexible enough to be molded into something better – but strong enough to keep our core integrity in tact.

I believe that sums me up pretty well, doesn't it?

Ciosa

Ciosa is an NPC in 7th Sea - he's a Cardinal in the Vaticine church, a corollary for Catholicism.  The NPC is a political power in a burgeoning divide in the church - the Inquisition runs rampant, the Heirophant is dead and a new Cardinal's Council is necessary to convene and elect a new Heirophant.  Ciosa represents everything that's good about faith - the desire to heal, show compassion, protect, nurture...to be moved by a force greater than oneself to do good and show compassion.  Opposed to him s a man named Verdugo that wants to root out heretics and sinners and cast them to flame, and they're the two principal contenders for the seat of the Heirophant.

I liked the symbolism inherent in the character, and I always enjoyed playing him in games.  I've written a lot of stuff under it, and it's become something that follows me from boards to MMOs to ... everything.

Oddly, the nation he's in is supposed to be an analogue for Rome/Italy, and Ciosa sounds Italian but has never actually appeared in any Italian language thing I've looked up.

Also, it's never in use.  :D

Wolfling72

I have been a practicing pagan for nigh on 16 years. Wolf is my spirit guide, and so, there has always been a Wolf in any screen name I've chosen. (Trust me when I say you could find just about every place I've ever been if you were to look for Wolf and different versions of the word Moon).

That name has resonance for me and is a highly personal part of my belief system and the way that I see myself. I wouldn't be who and what I am anywhere, if I didn't have that particular word included as part of my self naming process.

Saerrael

Oh, this is going to take a bit.

I named a character in WoW 'Saerra' once, she was a fire mage. 'Saerra' is based on searing. When I signed up on Elliquiy, I couldn't really think of anything more fitting than a fire name like that. 'SaerraEL' however, would mean more along the lines of 'burning angel' (Burning One - Seraph). Somewhere around 1998 I started using all kinds of Angelic screennames for chatrooms. I can't recall exactly when and where the screenname 'Saerrael' was born, but I use it just about everywhere on the internet, now-a-days. I'm pretty certain, too, that I am the only Saerrael around. Though.. if you say that 'out loud' on the internet, it's quite tempting the Devil and thus I'm certain I won't be the only one pretty quickly after this post *coughs*

The one I wanted was taken so I just used a name I had for one of my WoW characters :P

Thesunmaid

Well for mine it was actually a song by a band called Soul asylum and one of their songs was The sunmaid. I enjoyed the song and when i was depressed in high school which happened rather often this song sort of cheered me up. I have been using it as a screen name since then.

Just made it up. The first letter of my real name is L, so I thought L1. Just decided to not capitalize the first letter. No real meaning behind it.

Star Safyre

I signed up under the name Star Sapphire.  My typical usernames have something to do with goats (my favorite animal), but I wanted something a bit more elegant here.  The stone of our engagement rings are star sapphires (When we bought them, I had never seen the stone before and they reminded me of his eyes), so I went with it.  Once I realized I could misspell my name to match his, I changed it to Star Safyre or we could be Mr. and Mrs. Fyre.
My heaven is to be with him always.

Ah, xenondestroyer, from the times I played X2: the Threat, the Xenon were the robot enemies in the game. After destroying their Huge battleship with a tiny little fighter(no one else ever tried it before) I took the name with pride and used it just about everywhere

Skynet

Skynet was sort of a personal in-joke for me; I once entertained the thought of an Internet persona of a newly self-aware robot exposed to human nature via the Internet.

Even though I later abandoned the idea, I thought that it was a cool username, so I chose it.

Boxy

Boxy is pretty much a shortened version of Boxman, which has seen many variations at plenty of other places.  People seem to associate either with Boxxy, a supposedly infamous internet troll, and a character from this popular song on youtube who happens to be half box, half man. :P  Truth is, I knew about neither of those when I first came up with the name for my gamertag on Xbox Live.

Lost is still pretty much my favorite TV show ever, despite it having ended quite a while ago now.  Locke, my favorite character on the show, had told Boone in season 1 that he'd worked at a box manufacturing company.  It wasn't until season 2, though, that he'd earned the nickname "Boxman" from Desmond, and I thought it was good enough to stick myself with since I admired the character so much.  Besides, I wasn't terribly good at thinking up my own names.  One I'd used before was simply "EvilUser" - not very creative. :P

Like I said, though, it has seen variations.  I took a song from Lonely Island and turned it to "Like a Boxx".  That and Metal Gear Solid 3 has given me the idea for "Big Boxx", and it's funny because Snake's real name there is John, just like John Locke.  There's even one codec conversation wherein Snake tells Sigint that it's his destiny to hide in cardboard boxes, much like how Locke thought all about destiny on Lost.

Stella Maris

It took me a little bit to come up with a new handle to use here. I wanted to go with something new that I haven't used elsewhere, which takes a lot of names off the table as I'm a serious altaholic in MMOs.

I started by looking up names related to my given name. It's actually a pet form of another name which is, itself, a pet form of a much older name.

Stella Maris is Latin for Star of the Sea, and I've always had a strong connection with the sea, so I thought it would suit me just fine. :)

Top Cat

Sure, why not. =^_^=

Like ElusiveM00se, I decided that I wanted to have a different name here than the user name I've been using on dozens of other sites, for over a decade. Separate my porny persona from the "work-safe" me.

So I started thinking. Cats have been in my handle since about 92, when it was still BBS'es and not the Internet as we know it. Cats are an important part of my life, whether talking real-life pets, or internet catgirls, or what-have-you. And then I started thinking about ways to spin that in an erotic context, and literally the first thing that popped into my mind was Top Cat. Top, as in dominant. And my second thought was remembering the old cartoon by that name, and that settled it. =^_^=

* * * * *

Boxy: I'm 90% certain that Boxxy wasn't what she appeared to be - she was going off a script. I think she was some sort of new-age actress portfolio, demonstrating that she can do the apparently rambling stream of consciousness. But I have no proof of that, just a strong hunch.

Remy

'Remy' was the name of a girl I used in a roleplay I wrote some years ago.

At the time of choosing a name for that character, I just named that girl 'Remy' after one of my favorite brandies 'Remy Martin'.  My favorite brandy 'Hennessy' just doesn't have the same ring.

Anyway on joining here, I took her name with me to start over with a fresh sheet so to speak, and I love it.

Hades

I took the name "Hades" for a couple of reasons.   The primary reason is that I think from a historical perspective you can tell an incredable amount of detail about a culture and civilization by looking at how it handles the question of death.  Some cultures go the route of the ancient Egyptians and go to near-obsessive levels in their desire for answers.  Others go the route of the ancient Greeks and Romans who see the Underworld as simply a continuation of this life and are content with that.   The Western world, thanks to the heavy influence of Christianity, generally sees death as the gateway to eternal paradise or torment depending on the state of your soul.    Death terrifies us as a species, and so we spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about it and resources trying to delay it as long as we can.

And to a smaller extent, I went with the name because I have used it for about six or seven years now through my roleplaying circles, so I thought if by some coincidence I came across anyone on here that knew me through those circles, this would make it easier for them to find me. :)

Beguile's Mistress

I didn't find mine anywhere or even make it up.  I registered and when I it was time to type in a screen name it was there in my mind waiting for me and came out through my fingers like most of my writing does.  I've always liked the word beguile and the song "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" which has it in one of lines of lyrics.

I would beguile everyone if I could.

Violence

I've always had a habit of putting a "placeholder" name in while I fill out the rest of a form whenever I'm signing up for something like a forum account or e-mail or what have you.  I do it because if I don't put something in the box, I won't be able to mentally get past it to fill out everything else.  The intention is that I'll think of something else once I've got all the other information out.  I'm not really sure why I do it, I think it's a neurotic holdover from when I played MMO's and would constantly redesign my characters to suit a different personality if the name I wanted wasn't available.

Usually, what I do is put in a single-word pseudonym that seems too awesome to be available.

So, to make a long story short, apparently the name "Violence" was available.

>.>

My story isn't nearly as inspired or cool as everybody else's...

Though, I guess that's really the story of how I ended up with the name, rather than chose it.  I don't think I've ever told anybody why I chose it.

At the time I signed up for the account, I was very heavily in mourning over the passing of my girlfriend... and one of our "things" was that she'd always have me write her stories, or tell her stories before bed or during bed-related-activities.  She used to get more excited the more violent or brutal the stories were... so, in a kind of twisted way, I ended up associating violence with sex.  I also kind of credit her for whatever talent I might have with words, so I wanted my name to be something that reminded me of her in a fun and positive way.  And, believe me, Violence seemed like the more interesting and acceptable alternative compared to naming myself after any of our other "things". *laughs*

Luckily it also comes with so many delightful puns for any time I need to make a thread.  :D

And it all breaks down at the role reversal . Got the muse in my head she's universal . Spinnin' me round she's coming over me.

Aislinn

Soooooooo....when I signed up, I used the name 'irish fantasy'. That has been one of my screen names for a very long time. I always have difficulty figuring out how the name will be used once the registration process is done so I just tossed 'irish fantasy' in there because I couldn't think of anything better.

All of my screen names have always had the element of Irish, Ireland, Celtic, etc....because that's part of who I am (parents are from Ireland)

Once I got in and saw the patterns and themes of names people had, I decided to change to one of my other familiar screen names, Aislinn. Aislinn is an Irish Gaelic name that means "dream" or "vision" in Irish Gaelic and it is also one of the many names on my birth certificate (Irish Catholic, enough said...) I also like the idea of fantasy, dream and/or vision because when you write, you are creating a 'vision' for someone else to read and think about.

I am inimitable I am an original

FaeBorne

Since 97 I have used 3 screen names glitterpixie, thatpixiebrat, Pixie. My nickname in real life is Pixie as well. I love fairies, and all things related and have since I was a very young girl of about 3-4 years old. When signing up for this site, I wanted something that spoke of that like, but was a bit more mature as I am now in my 30's.

And so... FaeBorne popped into existance.

;)

And thats the whole truth an nuttin but!  :-*

Endorphin

I was listening to an artist called 'Endorphin' at the time.

Endorphins are associated with good moods and feelings of well-being.

I'm usually in a good mood.

et Voila!

Username ---> Endorphin ;D

Thorne

I've been 'Sylverthorne' pretty nearly everywhere I have an account.

I don't remember why I chose it, but it fits. I'm a night-owl by preference, was born under a moon sign - there's the silver - and most people will agree that I can be very sharp when upset or offended.
I generally answer to 'Thorne' on the 'net, and I've been known to answer to it IRL, too.
Problem is, if I don't get it first, someone else usually does, and thus I have a couple of different variations on the theme.  ::)

GingerOne

I chose mine because ginger is another term for a redhead, which I am and scorpion because I'm a scorpio. The 2012 I added because that is the year I came up with the name on another site.
Sweet as can be, but I bite.
Getting the hang of things again for now. No promises.

Bloodied Porcelain

I've been using Bloodied Porcelain for years now... it's become part of my online persona.

To explain the background on it...

Originally the name was adopted as a bit of a "tribute" to my favorite RP character of all time, who first made her appearance in a Vampire: the Masquerade table top when I was oh... about 12 or 13. I played a malkavian with regressive personality disorder and who, despite being in her late teens when she was turned, dresses and behaves like a child, even going so far as to call her Sire "Daddy". She was malnourished as a human and so her stature was much smaller than most girls would have been by her age, but vampirism suited her and brought out her best physical qualities (skin tone, intense stare, red hair, etc). When I played her both in table top and later in LARP sessions, she was described by others as being a "walking, talking, blood splattered china doll". It was a natural progression for the name to be born from that.

But the name is a double edged sword, as it also has some real life meaning as well:

I have, for years, apparently been one of those girls who gets described as "doll like" for one reason or another. In the BDSM community I used to frequent, I was described as being "everyone's favorite porcelain doll" because I have a very very fair complexion and when I'm patient enough to allow myself to be dressed up, have my hair done, etc I pull off the look very well. Add to that the fact that like so many, I'm "broken" in one way or another, and the fact that I'm a bit of a masochist, that's where the bloodied part came from. Put them together, and it's supposed to embody the "broken doll" sentiment.
I want no ordinary lover. I want a storm. I want sleepless nights and endless conversations at four a.m. I want passion, I want madness.
I want someone who's able to make my whole body shiver from a distance and also pull me close to make sense of all my bones.

Cyrano Johnson

Actually a play on the character "Cyrano Jones," the oily, villainous merchant from the original Star Trek. I originally adopted it for the purpose of writing a series of "Sleaze Trek" spoofs which have since fallen by the wayside (though I may yet adapt the background material I came up with for an RP here).

hippyness

hippyness is my secondary screen name. I use it for things I don't exactly want showing up when you google my primary account.

HippyChibi, my primary (see the connection) came from years ago when I felt I needed a new screen name. Too many people were referring to me as a hippy in real llife so it seemed appropriate to add in a screen name. Chibi has been with me sense... I don't know, Charter Cable offered an alternative to AOL. Not something I could get rid of. I'm just old and can't accept change too well.
Totally me in that avatar. ^_-

QuoteA lot of people ask where the nickname "DudeLRok" came from and here is a good place to explain that very thing.

Some time ago, back in mid or late 2003, there was a game called Halo2 and it was very popular among males from 16-34. One of those males which played this game to the point where it might be considered an addiction was myself. However we are getting ahead of ourselves.

Back even before 2003 was a game called Red Faction II and it was a whole family affair in my home to play as a group. One of the character selection options (Or Toon if you are from the world of MMOs) was called a Nano Civilian. Me, being about thirteen at the time, thought it funny that his being hit with bullets noise sounded like "Dude" in a grown like fashion. Four letters, however, was not going to cut it for a nickname. Thus, again being about thirteen at the time, two possible and alternating nicks were chosen.

    DudeIRok (Not an L)
    DudeUSuk

This went on for some time until no one wanted to play the game with me unless I was blindfolded and looked at the wall behind me rather than the game screen so it eventually turned into Uno night which was fun for everyone again.

Skip forward back to Halo2 and after a lot of messing about to get broadband, XBL was finally up and running on my pretty brick of a game console. However, I needed a nickname.

    DudeIRok (Not an L)
    DudeUSuk

The two were my only possible options so I went with the former as the latter seemed like a breach of XBLs TOS. Little did I know people had done much worse things than imply "You Suck" in a nickname.

Upon only three games in, everyone mistook capital I with a lowercase L due to XBL fail text formatting and, as a consequence "Dudel" was a majority of my nicknames not counting the crude ones people cleverly thought up. So, DudeLRok was born as that is much cooler than "DudeIRok" and certainly a lot less egotistical.

I AM THE RETURN!

Blythe

I chose my name for a myriad of associations with things I adore. The first is that it's a word that's occurred in some british literature, and when I read it there, it was associated with carefree and joyful behavior. Secondly, it can function as a feminine first name or a masculine last name. It also includes "Bly," the last name of a villain I adored as a child, John Bly from Brisco County Jr.
