So I wonder what are some of your favorite quotations? I post it here just because some of mine might be a bit controversial. Here are mine:

My land is bare of chattering folk;
the clouds are low along the ridges,
and sweet's the air with curly smoke
from all my burning bridges.
-Dorothy Parker

Nella- "So after I finish this [drink] all my bad life choices come to fruition right?"
Lindsey- "No because we frame them as good."

"Evil is a lot more fun, we have all the best lines." -Robert Knox in Doctor Who: Medicinal Purposes

"What's the use of a good quotation if you can't change it?" -Sixth Doctor

“To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” -Voltaire

“What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.” -Salman Rushdie

"A critic is expected to present certain shades of grey. As a result, modern reviews are filled with weak, almost self-contradictory clauses of “Absolutely golden, with the following flaws” and “Terrible, but not without it’s good points”. This is a show that allows me to, for a brief moment, break that trend. A show that allows for a single pure, unambiguous reaction.
Glee sucks.
Glee sucks unrepentantly. Glee sucks in a manner so flawless and complete that one has to admire the brazenness of it. Glee sucks enough to create a singularity of bad writing and half-assed covers strong enough to pull in the couch potato hivemind. Glee sucks in a way that makes the average teen sitcom's cookie-cutter characters and heavy-handed themes appear more complex than Paradise Lost. Glee is the modern avatar of suck.
This show’s survival in the same timeslot as Lost and Community is nothing short of a dark miracle. I recommend it slightly less than Ebola." -TV Tropes review of Glee: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/review_comments.php?id=1440

"I once read a theory that since the tardis is the one that is translating all of the doctors language from gallifreyan to english. That at this point he is going over some highly complex formulas on physics he’s learned as a time lord. But that it is so complex that the only words in english that could translate it is physics." -Random Tumblr User on this scene from the Doctor Who episode School Reunion: Physiiiics!

"We all know blogging is just a vaguely narcissistic attempt to make ourselves feel important, to reassure ourselves that our opinions matter and at least someone out there cares what we think." -http://butmyopinionisright.tumblr.com

"It is likely I will die next to a pile of things I was meaning to read." -Lemony Snicket

"You're smarter than the things you say." -Maggie Ramsey (a friend of mine, i thought it was too good not to put it here)

"The truth resists simplicity." -John Green

(Describing George W Bush) "Now I know there are some polls out there saying that this man has a 32% approval rating. But guys like us, we don't listen to the polls. The polls are just a reflection of what people are thinking in "reality." And as we all know, reality has a well known liberal bias." -Stephen Colbert

"I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it." -Mark Twain

"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move." -Douglas Adams

"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?"
- Douglas Adams

"Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." -Thomas Jefferson

The United States is in no sense founded on the Christian religion. -George Washington

"Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions." -Jerry Falwell

"Actually, many archeologists, Christian or not, hold that other religions originate from early versions of Christianity. Just google it." -Random Internet Fundie

"The Internet [is] simply a place where religions come to die." -Thunderf00t

"We are all atheists about most of the gods that societies have ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further." -Richard Dawkins

"Dang it, Jim, I'm an astronomer, not a doctor! I mean, I am a doctor, but I'm not that kind of doctor. I have a doctorate, it's not the same thing. You can't help people with a doctorate, you just sit there, and you're useless!" -Dr. Doppler, Treasure Planet

"Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever." -Gandhi

Cyrano Johnson

"That you are a character does not mean that you have character."

- Winston Wolfe, Pulp Fiction

"Like the fella says, in Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

- Harry Lyme, The Third Man

"I dropped off the money exactly as per... look, man, I've got certain information, all right? Certain things have come to light! And, you know, has it ever occurred to you, that, instead of, uh, you know, running around, uh, uh, blaming me, you know, given the nature of all this new shit, you know, I-I-I-I... this could be a-a-a-a lot more, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, complex, I mean, it's not just, it might not be just such a simple... uh, you know?"

- The Dude, The Big Lebowski

"Nihilists... fuck me. I mean, say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos."

- Walter Sobchak, The Big Lebowski

"This was a Golden Age, a time of high adventure, rich living and hard dying... but nobody thought so. This was a future of fortune and theft, pillage and rapine, culture and vice... but nobody admitted it. This was an age of extremes, a fascinating century of freaks... but nobody loved it."

- Alfred Bester, The Stars My Destination

"Squeeze! Squeeze! Squeeze! all the morning long; I squeezed that sperm till I myself almost melted into it; I squeezed that sperm till a strange sort of insanity came over me, and I found myself unwittingly squeezing my co-labourers' hands in it, mistaking their hands for the gentle globules. Such an abounding, affectionate, friendly, loving feeling did this avocation beget; that at last I was continually squeezing their hands, and looking up into their eyes sentimentally, as much as to say,—Oh! my dear fellow beings, why should we longer cherish any social acerbities, or know the slightest ill humour or envy! Come; let us squeeze hands all round; nay, let us all squeeze ourselves into each other; let us squeeze ourselves universally into the very milk and sperm of kindness."

- Herman Melville, Moby Dick (a really quite inspired bit of prose that sounds hilariously like porn today)

"You shouldn't hang me on a hook, Johnny. My father hung me on a hook once. Once."

- Danny Vermin, Johnny Dangerously

"I would like to direct this to the distinguished members of the panel: You lousy cork-soakers. You have violated my farging rights. Dis somanumbatching country was founded so that the liberties of common patriotic citizens like me could not be taken away by a bunch of fargin iceholes... like yourselves."

- Roman Moronie, Johnny Dangerously

"I mean, am I crazy? Huh? I mean, this is all I am trying to say here, okay? If you put me in the game, Brad Bramish, is going to do what needs to be done! Okay? But they don't put me in, what needs doin' ain't gonna get done! Huh? And then, don't come crying to me! "Boo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!" If you don't let me play!"

- Brad Bramish, Brick

(some random quotes I have heard and liked.)

"They are in front of us, behind us, and we are flanked on both sides by an enemy that outnumbers us 29:1. They can't get away from us now!"
Marine Lt. General Chesty Puller during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.

"Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership."
Colin Powell

"The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war."
George S. Patton.  (It became a creed in my platoon when I was in basic)

“War is the greatest evil Satan has invented to corrupt our hearts and souls. We should honor our soldiers, but we should never honor war.”
― Dean Hughes, Far From Home

“The soldier is the Army. No army is better than its soldiers. The Soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country”
― George S. Patton Jr.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
Thomas Jefferson

“A man who does not have something for which he is willing to die is not fit to live.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.

Rufus: He still digs humanity, but it bothers Him to see the shit that gets carried out in His name - wars, bigotry, televangelism. But especially the factioning of all the religions. He said humanity took a good idea and, like always, built a belief structure on it.

Bethany: Having beliefs isn't good?

Rufus: I think it's better to have ideas. You can change an idea. Changing a belief is trickier...
---- From the movie "Dogma" (This line actually changed much in the way of how I view the different religious groups, but still maintained my faith in God.)

(This last one has always been one of my personal favorites.)

“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”
― John Stuart Mill

Okay, fine, I'll do some political ones:

"Revolution is not a dinner party, not an essay, nor a painting, nor a piece of embroidery; it cannot be advanced softly, gradually, carefully, considerately, respectfully, politely, plainly, and modestly."

"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which is 'never get involved in a land war in Asia' - but only slightly less well-known is this: 'never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line'! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha--" [dies]

- Vincini, The Princess Bride

“Ultimate excellence lies not in winning every battle, but in defeating the enemy without ever fighting.”

- Sun Tzu, The Art of War

"Let us make war, since evidently, you have found peace intolerable."

- Scipio Africanus

“Lead from the back — and let others believe they are in front.”

- Nelson Mandela

“All courses of action are risky, so prudence is not in avoiding danger (it's impossible), but calculating risk and acting decisively. Make mistakes of ambition and not mistakes of sloth. Develop the strength to do bold things, not the strength to suffer.”

- Machiavelli

“The arrow shot by the archer may or may not kill a single person. But stratagems devised by wise men can kill even babes in the womb.”

- Kautilya (from the Arthashastra; in many ways he really was as ruthless as Machiavelli is mistakenly imagined to have been)

How's about some quotes by evil (and/or supposedly-evil) leaders that actually express some quite sound facts and strategies?

“It could never be a correct justification that, because the whites oppressed us yesterday when they had power, that the blacks must oppress them today because they have power.”

- Robert Mugabe (who is otherwise an inexhaustible fountain of nutty and bloodthirsty-sounding quotables)

“One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic.”

- Josef Stalin (setting the stage for David Wong's "Monkeysphere" article on Cracked.com)

“The oppressed peoples can liberate themselves only through struggle. This is a simple and clear truth confirmed by history.”

- Kim Il-Sung (strictly-speaking quite true... although it helps to have some imagination as to the type of struggle and a sense of where to stop)

“Keep your faith in God, but keep your powder dry.”

- Oliver Cromwell (this turned up on a list of "quotes from evil leaders," so I guess some people consider him one, though I don't see why particularly; at any rate a restatement of the old "Trust in Allah, but tie up your camel" proverb from the Middle East)

“You cannot run faster than a bullet.”

Soon there will be war. Millions will burn. Millions will perish in sickness and misery. Why does one death matter against so many? Because there is good and there is evil, and evil must be punished. Even in the face of Armageddon I shall not compromise in this. But there are so many deserving of retribution ... and there is so little time.

-Rorschach

If a dog is biting a black man, the black man should kill the dog, whether the dog is a police dog or a hound dog or any kind of dog. If a dog is fixed on a black man when that black man is doing nothing but trying to take advantage of what the government says is supposed to be his, then that black man should kill that dog or any two-legged dog who sets the dog on him.

-Malcolm X

The lesson this teaches and which every Afro-American should ponder well, is that a Winchester rifle should have a place of honor in every black home, and it should be used for that protection which the law refuses to give. When the white man who is always the aggressor knows he runs as great a risk of biting the dust every time his Afro-American victim does, he will have greater respect for Afro-American life. The more the Afro-American yields and cringes and begs, the more he has to do so, the more he is insulted, outraged and lynched.

-Ida B. Wells

If they want eternal war, well and good; we accept the issue, and will dispossess them and put our friends in their place. I know thousands and millions of good people who at simple notice would come to North Alabama and accept the elegant houses and plantations there. If the people of Huntsville think different, let them persist in war three years longer, and then they will not be consulted. Three years ago by a little reflection and patience they could have had a hundred years of peace and prosperity, but they preferred war; very well. Last year they could have saved their slaves, but now it is too late. All the powers of earth cannot restore to them their slaves, any more than their dead grandfathers. Next year their lands will be taken, for in war we can take them, and rightfully, too, and in another year they may beg in vain for their lives. A people who will persevere in war beyond a certain limit ought to know the consequences. Many, many peoples with less pertinacity have been wiped out of national existence.[/i

A phrase used to tell another person to politely say, "I have no interest in continuing this conversation or listening to you complain." In its hardly ever used long form, it would be used as, "I don't know what to tell you to get you to shut up." Extensively used when people present you with a problem, you offer advice to them on viable solutions, but they come up with excuses why they can't follow your advice.

"Yield to temptation. It may not pass your way again."

"You can have peace. Or you can have freedom. Don't ever count on having both at once."

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

And of course my sig

Mmmm... hog.... *drools Homer Simpson-style*

EDIT: Oh hang on, the last one. So I was just mocking his gallant death? Accidental empathy FAIL.

Of that list I could probably change a diaper, I know I can write a sonnet (albeit a mediocre one) and balance accounts, I've built a wall, I can take and give orders, cooperate or act alone, solve (relatively simple) equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer (if BASIC and HTML count), cook a tasty meal... and I could probably die gallantly. Maybe. Depending on one's definition of "gallantly." But conning a ship, butchering a hog, designing a building, fighting efficiently and planning an invasion all seem like justifiably specialized skills? (I could only do the last one in Rome: Total War, which I'm pretty sure doesn't count, and I'm reasonably sure that people go through extensive training for things like conning ships and designing buildings...)

There was a button going around conventions after his death that said Funeral at 6, Barbecue at 7, no salt required.  It's a tongue in cheek reference to the ending of Stranger in a Strange Land, and one that (if anecdotes are anything to go by) Heinlein himself would have approved of.  ;)
