Question about coding? (Don't even know if that's right.)

Okay so normally when I type something, I change the color or add italics and what not and the little [color = purple]  [/color] or [ i ] [ / i ] appears.

Well now...when I do it, that doesn't appear, it just changes it. Which is great and everything but when I hit 'post' it jacks up my paragraphs. If I have three paragraphs, it makes them all one huge paragraph and clumps everything together.

I have NO idea if I'm explaining this right. OR if there's already another topic about this but...um...how do I fix it?
