I don't disagree that is occurring in some cases. And likely will in some parts of the world regardless of regulation and conservation. We are an invasive species. Though our conservation efforts have had a huge positive impact at least in my part of the world.

My point is that it's not going to be the end of life. Eventually we will either get our act together or we won't. Regardless of our outcome nature will survive and an equilibrium will eventually establish itself again. The damage done will correct itself after we've either fixed ourselves or caused our own extinction.
Conservation is having a large positive impact, this is true. However, for many species it's a matter of 'too little, too late'. Even for species that aren't extinct yet, they are still doomed within the next few decades because they no longer have the genetic diversity to keep a viable population. So killing a single male lion may not seem like a big problem in the small picture, but in the big picture it counts. Why? Because the next dominant male of the pride will kill off Cecil's offspring. It's what lions do. It also means an entire generation of lion cubs killed off because of the need for one man to prove his masculinity.

And I think we can agree that we should be worried about the consequences of nature balancing itself out, as you say. Nope, it won't mean the end of all life, but it may very well mean the end of all human life, and I don't know about you, but I'm pretty invested in humanity going on strong for a while yet.

There's only really one way to go to ensure long-term survival of humanity, though, and that is up - up and out. We need more serious research and development into space exploration and colonization; as long as we live on one planet, we've got all our eggs, metaphorical and literal, in one basket.

Not for one man to prove his masculinity. But to bring the female back into heat faster. You make it sound like they're just evil men instead of animals doing what they've evolved to do.

And killing off a dominant males cubs can actually improve genetic diversity. He was fifteen and ruled that pride for many many years. Which means there is a lot of his DNA floating around the gene pool. By killing off the latest generation and introducing new DNA into the pool they are increasing the genetic diversity.

This seems like a really good argument for humanity to stop f*cking around and work on getting its act together.

Many do work together and are trying to get it straight. Though you wouldn't hear about it from the doom and gloom folks.

Yes, many do work together to make it right and these people are goddamn heroes.

He was talking about the dentist, not the lion, I'm pretty sure.

Thumper

I'm not talking about anyone here obviously. More like was discussed in another thread, from the news and special interest groups all you hear is the bad being done. Not the great strides that have been taken.

Beorning

Aaaand coming back to news :) Today's major news here is, of course, the 71th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. Lots of related events are taking place these days...

I mentioned it in another thread, but it is very appropriate here.

Mainstream media picks and chooses what it talks about, and in doing so, shapes our perception of the world.  We hear about Kim Khardasian's latest whatever, and not about Bernie Sanders getting 100,000 people to an Internet-coordinated kickoff on the 29th.  We hear about where terrorists bomb archaeological sites and not about the Muslim charities that raised money to rebuild the churches burned in South Carolina.

There's a lot of doom and gloom that we don't hear about too - because some editor didn't think it was worth reporting.  The Trans-Pacific Partnership.  The fact that (in addition to five African Americans) at least two Native American activists have died in police custody in the past month.

My point being that we can't rely on mainstream media any more.  Not to become one of those 'doom and gloomers', but you have to wonder at some point why the stuff that is reported is getting reported - and why the stuff that isn't ... isn't.

Hello again, Texas...  Not that you want to hear from any "outside" observers (including the government!) I know but...

Shooting at armadillos really can be bad for you.

Now Huckabee wants the 14th Amendment to cover fetuses in order to ban abortion.  Next it'll be corporations...  Or wait, did the Supreme Court already do that?  Okay I never did soak up their whole rationale, ahem.

And he claims presidents ignore the courts and constitution all the time (not so, but does he care?)...  So on to the lovely wishfully-deniable turn of phrase "Won't rule out" using force to get what one wants.   ::)

Challenged directly if this would entail using the FBI or federal forces to enforce his interpretation, Mr Huckabee said: “We’ll see, if I get to be president.”

.........For a moment I thought this was a joke and laughed, then I realized it was real and I chuckled. Sometimes people bring shit upon themselves. Still I feel bad for the guy, trying to get rid of a pest on his property and needs to be airlifted afterwards. Not to mention the assholes int he comments wishing that the guy had died makes me lose faith in humanity yet again. (Cause that's what the internet does best aside from porn)

In other news the Actresses for the new ghsotbusters reboot pay a visit to sick folks to bring their spirits up.

Its a nice gesture and I love when stars do this but...I seriously don't know how to feel about the reboot.... Im just not feeling it. :(

Wow... interesting side link on that article:

Eating armadillos has been connected to leprosy in humans.

From the link:
Quote
While leprosy is infectious, it's hard to catch. Those most at risk are family members who are in constant contact with an untreated person. Leprosy can't be spread through casual contact such as handshaking, or sexual intercourse.

Good to know   8-)
I guess this means hand jobs and vaginal are doable!

XD

Oniya

Fun fact - the armadillo is the only mammal other than humans that can contract Hansen's Disease.
