News from Poland: Law & Justice has a new idea how to deal with the Constitutional Tribunal:

http://www.thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/233502,Poland%E2%80%99s-ruling-party-wants-new-constitution-amid-political-crisis

Now they want to change the constitution, so that they could just dismiss the current CT and appoint a new one...  ::)

Also, take a peek at this:

http://www.thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/233411,Controversial-changes-to-Poland%E2%80%99s-civil-service-planned

The article doesn't mention it, but that bill also allows for over 1600 civil service's department heads to be fired. Just like that. It also lowers the general requirements for the prospective employees of the civil service. It looks like L&J plans on putting their people in there, too...

They aren't even hiding that: one of their MPs openly admitted that this bill's goal is to allow for appointing of new civil servants, ones that "will identify with the government ideologically".

And if they're so gung-ho right now about eliminating any members of the government who disagree with their policies now, why exactly would they be willing to surrender the reins of power later on? And who can stop them if they try?

So apparently in Tokyo a bunch of single guys have gotten together to protest against Christmas since its oppersive to "Singletons"

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/angry-single-men-stage-anti-christmas-rally-in-tokyo/ar-BBnJkPr?ocid=iehp

And they wonder why they are forever alone? ::)

They also protest valentines day. But they also claim its for Communist reasons, *rolls eyes*. Im pretty sure Communists celebrate Christmas and Valentines day in their own way.

Gee - I remember celebrating Christmas when I was single...

I think I see the problem.  Obviously, they just need to redesign the trees sold in Japan.  Throw a couple of these up and everyone will he happy again.

Yeah, it was squeezed inside the omnibus bill, which was massive and contained a whole lot of stuff, including significant stuff about the government's funding.  :-\

For those unaware of what CISA is, here's the wikipedia entry on it for an overview.

Aaaaaand they did it. Law & Justice has just blown up the Constitutional Tribunal. The parliament debated on the new CT bill today:

http://www.thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/233739,Polish-MPs-debate-controversial-change-to-Constitutional-Tribunal

... and it passed. Despite the opinions of the opposition and law experts that say that these changes might make it impossible for the CT to function and that some of them might even be unconstitutional.

Seriously, this is so awful... :(

Zakharra

It seems like the Law & Justice party is ok with democracy until they get voted in, then it MUST be changed -immediately- to 'fix' the problems of democracy, that will, incidentally, prevent them from ever losing the vote again. That is my fear: the L&J party is fixing the system so they will never lose power ever again, and abusing their majority in the government to do as -they- see fit. Plebes and opposition (who are conveniently demagogued) as enemies) not need apply.

Yeah though, the L&J is seriously building one hell of a backlash against them by their stupidity. How is the military taking this? Not the L&J party officials who are in 'charge', but the military men and women feel about this? Or are they told to shut up and soldier and obey the government?

The New York Times had an article recently that highlights the divisions in Polish society. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/23/opinion/driving-poland-apart.html?_r=0

QuoteOn one side are those representing conservative or Catholic values and stressing national pride and loyalty; on the other are those who highlight individual rights, embrace minorities and put universal justice before community solidarity. These two tribes have little in common. They hardly communicate, they often despise each other — and the language of the political debate on both sides is extremely polarized if not brutal.
...

The current turmoil, provoked and consciously stirred by the Law and Justice party, will further poison the political culture in a society where the lack of social capital, polarization and refusal to compromise are the central obstacles for future development and modernization.

In a recent interview, Mr. Kaczynski called his critics “Poles of the worst sort” who have the “tradition of national treason” in their genes. This black-and-white dichotomy, in which adversaries do not talk but hate each other, undermines the foundations of a liberal-democratic community no less than attacks on its institutions.

It does seem that way, IMHO.

Well, we don't really have any tradition of the military commenting on the government or getting involved in politics. So, there have been no comments from the military...

*nods* It was some time since we had a coup around here in Sweden too. It currently exists only in the rabid dreams of some diehard extremists.  ^_ ^

OT: Over the past week, the massive influx of refugees and migrants across the Öresund strait between Sweden and Denmark (where there's a railway/motorway bridge*) has pushed the cancellation of all direct passenger trains from Copenhagen city across the strait into Sweden (the city of Malmö and othe places nearby). Everyone now has to change trains at Copenhagen airport (Kastrup), the last stop on the Danish side, with the express purpose of the police and train personnel being able to check anyone's identity documents. There's a good deal of job commuting between the cities on the Swedish side and Copenhagen and of course lots of business and tourism, most of the personal travel involved is by local train, and after the bridge was taken into use in 2000 there has been no regular ferry or boat service between Copenhagen and Malmö, so local politicians are furious with this sudden cut at the artery of the region, but the deal was sort of clinched by the national governments over their heads.

The services between Copenhagen and Scania (the southern province around here) are built into the local train schedules, often it's the same trains that serve the local area on either side, so the "brake point" at Copenhagen airport is creating slowdowns and bottlenecks all around the system. And it's both quirky and a bit heartrending how the progress of the migrant crisis has pushed the government up in Stockholm to go back-pedaling on some of its earlier promises and really change the aims it is going for. They are pretending to be cooperating with Denmark over this, but the real tone of the exchanges between them has been both cold and sly for several months now. ::)

*yes, the same bridge and the same cross-border region that feature in the Danish/Swedish tv cop series The Bridge.

Motorhead's Lemmy passes away at 70.

It's sad. Apparently he found out he had terminal cancer a few days before.

As I read elsewhere last night, lots of musicians play rock n' roll. Lemmy *was* rock n' roll.

He'll be greatly missed.

Mark Salling (played Noah Puckerman on Glee) has been arrested for possession of child pornography, it looks like. Seems like he's gotten out on bail already, too--his bail was set at $20,000. :/

Ahh sucks, I always kinda liked Puck. But, then again, Puck and Mark Salling are two different people so I can keep liking Puck whatevertheless.

Eh? They still bombing Isis? Pretty sure they were leader killing like within the week of/after the Paris Attacks. >.> I do so remember reading retaliation strikes shortly after that incident somewhere.

Meanwhile, back here, the political awfulness continues...

Having dealt with the Constitutional Tribunal, Law & Justice decided to "fix" the public media. A few days ago, they pushed a new law regarding the public TV and radio through the parliament. The new law, IMHO, seems designed to strenghten the ruling party's influence on the public media - heck, they are quite open about it. They L&J MPs openly say that the public media are needlessly critical of the new government and the new law is needed to fix that.  :-(

They really are trying to become a one-party ruling state, aren't they?
