Well, true, but, in general terms, the armies of the Demon Princes are held together on principles of fear and power, whereas the forces of the Lords of the Nine are held together by order, rank, etc, etc, where anyone who isn't cohesive, coherent, and structured had better be damned good at what they do, and not too otherwise "infected" with Chaos or Neutrality, or they're good as dead. You can be cohesive, coherent, and structured and be chaotic... but you aren't as chaotic, and, in a population that composes a chaotic evil army that isn't just chaotic evil, but, rather, exemplifies chaotic evil, the odds of more than one or two such beings in a given group of half-dozen demons are astronomical.

kongming

I still say it depends on what Law and Chaos mean, and not even WotC can answer that one.

Perhaps the groups are anarchic - that is to say, there is no chain of command, everyone is as much a leader as each other (note: in theory. There's still the +5 Shocking Adamantine Spiked Chain of Command, so to speak. The strongest can still bully others.) and they all have their input or do their own thing without checking with each other. A little haphazard, but it means you don't get "Sergeant Pillock" deciding to issue commands that need to be ordered when he doesn't know what he's talking about. Instead, the specialist in the given area is a leader by default in their area.

Or maybe they're highly adaptive, forward thinking and fans of bringing on change to how things work, having ideas for the new way "things should be".

Or maybe Chaos is as haphazard as Devils promote it to be, but they all have the same driving force they're dedicated to. You know, "I don't like their ideas, but they're all better than the people on the other side." The kind that works until they win the war, at which point they divide up and have another war. Like beholders. Who are Lawful. Hmm.

Again we go back to "Law and Chaos don't mean anything." Partly it's a problem of "Law" and "Chaos" not actually being opposites. However I do see your point, and I know that there are certain ways that the alignments are commonly viewed, and "We're all demons!" can certainly be viewed as "We shouldn't work together!" It does invite that, true.

I guess we just wait and see how things go *grin*

Any ideas for your character?

Well... as proved by pirates and gaming groups... anarchy can work quite well in a small group.  As long as we all recognize the same goal, we'll get it done.  Careful planning... not so much.

I honestly don't mind playing on either side of the war, my concept should work equally well and I haven't finalized his personality enough for it to matter.

indarkestknight

Well, given the other concepts, I'm not surprised where this is going... So, unless anyone else is going to volunteer, I'll be the one to do the zany thing and play the healer (because a healer is always needed, even when no one in a CE team has a concept for it *has been there*) in this team. Manipulative bastard/bitch (haven't decided yet... maybe herm?) with more than a touch of sadism.

Questions, Kong: can we take invocations as part of our SLAs from the ravage, getting them based on the equivalent spell levels presented? Also, how are we going to deal with the troublesome DR and regeneration issues? Defense bonuses, or nay?

Also, Jeramiahh, a suggestion: at some point, pick up the SLAs ravage to get wraithstrike at will. It's a godsend for any fighter type.

kongming

I suppose I'll include the Defense Bonus, using whichever column most closely matches the armour proficiencies granted by your class - for instance, True Fiend gets... Light only? That'd give them the Defense Bonus of a Barbarian. I can't remember what the other two get, and am too lazy to check.

Invocations are allowed, yeah. After all, they have equivalent spell levels. The same can be said for any other spell-like ability that shows up - I know some things have special spell-likes, such as the Salt Mephit's "Aura of Desiccation" or the Steam Mephit's "Boiling Rain".

Oh, and I wouldn't force a role on someone. If no-one wanted to be healer (Lir-Lir did grab a "Medi-kit", incidentally, consisting of a potion of Remove Paralysis, one of Lesser Restoration, 1 CMW and 5 CLW. Considering she has Abuse Magic Device and a good CHA, I could even change them to scrolls, perhaps, saving money), I'd just have some kind of NPC in your unit who was primarily a healer because he/she liked to cmmit torture in his/her spare time.

As for DR, well, in the low-ish levels, it's overcome by special materials. At higher levels I'll see about getting some kind of "Amulet of Devil Slaying", seeing as we very well know that Demons and Devils dedicate time and money to figuring out how to kill each other.

Well, it's not that hard to become a healer, as long as you let us shift the ravage SLA's points when we gain Cha, change a level, or pass from common to abhorrent, etc. I mean, hell, at this point, cure moderate wounds at will (which costs two levels) will probably provide for everyone's most basic healing needs, more or less, which is what I intend on doing. The rest, as you mentioned, can be taken care of with potions or scrolls for the most part. And, incidentally, I do intend my character to be a torturer. *evil grin* Perverse minds think alike...

kongming

Oh, absolutely. I always said "Sick minds think alike." And it does make sense - not wanting your toy to tie.

And yeah, I'll allow the SLAs to upgrade as the various factors change.

KeyOfTwilight

Count me in, I havent played a good DnD in a very long time.  That, and I LOVE having interesting characters.

kongming

So...

Jeramiahh, Glab, Ixy, Muse, Key, Amber, Lir-Lir... that's seven! Nice, two smaller teams, I guess.

Now, for the first part it's going to be basically "down-time, mission, down-time, mission" for people to get a feel for things. After that I'll see about making things happen. I hope to see you all ruling little kingdoms across the planes by the end of this - or other impressive end goals.
