(Every word is valuable. :-))

That his relaxed mien irked her was not allowed expression upon her face. Instead, she tossed a pack, a bedroll, and then a hat in his direction... whether he caught them, dodged them, or let them smack him was up to the Pirate. Of course, she was familiar with the names he was known by, but Jacobs wasn't about to let on. Even if he likely was aware of it. It was best not to allow any sort of bond to develop between themselves and the prisoner, and that was an ironclad rule of the ship. Or had been.

In all honesty, Jacobs wasn't certain how to take the Pirate's postulating. And yes, that is what she assumed his response was.

"Once or twice. Got it. Gear up. We need to head out as soon as possible." She looked at the other men and nodded, seeing that they all were nearly ready as well. "Waiting on you."

Jacobs turned away and peered out at the landscape without bothering to open the hatch. If something happened upon them, the hull would make for a much needed layer of protection.

The pirate looked at all the gear arrayed before him.  When they weren't looking, he snagged one or two of the rations as well.

Jacobs surveyed the terrain outside, growing ever clear as the sun crested over the peaks of the mountains.

"We need to get going," she muttered impatiently. "Everyone ready? If you get lost, you're on your own... Good luck. Try to make your way either east or west. Make sure you keep your gear on you. I'm not sure how deep we are in the forest. All I know, is that the beasts are real. Whether or not they actually match the legends about them is a different story."

While the others surveyed the spooky forest, the pirate tore off his shirt, wrapping it around his head.  Thus now in a state of dishabille, he flexed his bare chest, making his colorful tattoos dance.  "Let's away then, mates," he said.

Jacobs stared, flabbergasted at the pirate... rather, the result of his actions. The question of, why was written all over her face, but then she shook herself. "You sure you want to go like that?" she asked incredulously, not bothering to disguise the notion that she thought he might be out of his mind from her entirely too expressive eyes. That she was tempted to simply order the men to suit him up was made obvious by her scowl.

Although Jacobs' stern gaze was rife with displeasure, the pirate was entirely too calm as he grinned with complete equanimity.  "Well, are we going, luv, or are you going to stand there all day?" he mocked her, marching boldly, or perhaps foolishly, into the forest.

The legendary dread pirate was either fearless, an idiot, or completely crazy. She couldn't decide which it was, but she was firmly convinced of it as she watched him walk off into the forest by himself. With very little in the way of gear, she noted--now that was what really displeased her, but that was his choice. It would be his own fault if he ran out of rations, or didn't have a bedroll to sleep on tonight. There was no doubt in her mind that they would not breach the vast wood before then, but sense the man had wandered off already, she motioned for the ones still standing flabbergasted behind her to be off. Before she exited the pod, however, she snagged a snack and tore the packaging open.

"Breakfast," was her answer before the men could begin any yammering, "We'll need the energy."

Then they were off after the pirate.

The pirate joined them in breakfast, although part of his confidence came from the two rations he'd squirrelled away earlier and hidden about his person.  He wasn't much for yammering unnecessarily, given the grave nature of their situation.

After she'd eaten her portion, she glanced around and pulled out her compass. "We're heading the wrong way. We should be going west." She nodded, indicating that they should be going in the opposite direction. The fact that Remiel had joined them for their meal made things a lot easier for the ex-pirates. I mean, ex-airmen... After eating, they all herded the pirate along in the direction she'd pointed them in.

"West, east, what does it matter?  We're all going to be eaten by the monsters of the forest anyway," said the pirate, in a cheerfully nihilistic manner.

"Who knows?" Jacobs, grumbled, "We might even have to resort to cannibalism before that happens, if we're not careful. Egh." She shuddered.

"Perhaps we will," grunted the pirate.  "Perhaps we will."  He made himself a mental note to stay far away from Jacobs' machination.

The urge to needle him had been a spiteful thing, and maybe well below her. She shouldn't be taking her frustration out on anyone, but even though she admitted that to herself and silently berated herself through the first leg of the journey, she still chose not to give him an apology. "To the left," she called out at one point as they came upon a tar pit. There was a skeleton of a large beast in there, and it wasn't one she recognized. It was long dead, however, and fascinating... if it wasn't for the location being too dangerous for her to want to return. Ever. "Keep to the left."

A large beast in a tar pit, the bones jutting like ivory needles.  It might have been a great discovery, had the crew been possessed of a curious and scientific nature.  But the pirate had no time for such epistemological thoughts as he secretly, slyly, looked for an opportunity to escape.

The sound of creaking wood came from overhead as they walked through the dense forest, having moved past the pool of pitch black. Jacobs took one look overhead and yelled, "Run for your lives!" She chose an immediate left while the others ran in various directions. A gigantic roc thudded onto the ground, its talons grasping Pietre while powerful gusts from its mighty wings sent detritus flying from its location. Jacobs had her pistol out but it was difficult to take proper aim without getting impaled in the eye by small rocks, leaves, and sticks. She took a stable stance, braced against the wind, and aimed for what she thought might be the bird's shoulder. The shot rang loudly.
