Chartrain County (IC Thread)

"In every generation there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer...

Then one of the slayers died, but was brought back to life again through CPR.  This resulted in two full-fledged slayers existing at the same time for the first time in history...

Then that slayer died again before being brought back to life through magic."

The date is September, 2001 and it's the start of a new school year.  After the death of Buffy Summers at the end of Season 5, a third slayer has been activated.  This game will take place in the fictional town of Croixville, a recently discovered hotspot for supernatural activity.  The events of the game will happen in parallel to Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 6 and Angel Season 3.

One of the things I thought was kind of strange was that, after Buffy sacrificed herself during the Season 5 finale, a third slayer didn't show up.  I've heard several arguments as to why this was the case, the most popular being that the Slayer Line of Succession has moved onto Faith.  The problem with that argument is that Buffy and several other characters have spoken before as though Buffy's death will activate a new slayer.  In the end, I've decided that this might be a good opportunity for an original cast of characters to have their own (similar) adventures that take place in the same universe as BTVS and Angel.

Information about Croixville, Chartrain County

Croixville is a fictional town of unrealistic size and geography and contains many elements of a large city, so... pretty much like any other fictional small town from a TV Show.  Founded in the late 19th century, this unincorporated town has a population of approximately 150,000, several high schools including Croixville High, a College Campus (Penemue College), a Wolfram & Hart branch office building, and an elected sheriff.  It is located within the fictional Chartrain County and is within driving distance of Chartrain City, a major metropolitan area.

Feel free to add any additional details you can come up with about this town in your character's back story.

Available Roles:
The Third Slayer (Faith was 17 when she was activated, so it's possible for the Third Slayer to be 18 years old at the start of the game)
-The Fourth Slayer (this could get really ridiculous, but it's possible that Faith had a cardiac arrest while she was in her coma between BTVS Seasons 3 and 4)
-The Slayer's Watcher
-Other Watcher(s) (may or may not be hiding the existence of the Third Slayer)
-Vampires (may or may not have a soul/chip/whatever; Spyke's journey and Wo-Pang's ability proves there's many ways to en-soul a vampire)
-Slaypires (vampires with slayer abilities; yes, they exist in canon)
-Potential Slayers (Many potential slayers have been found and trained by watchers before they have been activated)
-Witches
-Demons
-Half-Demons (born or created)
-Humans (with or without special abilities)
-Anything else you can think of

We will be using the Buffy Revised and Angel Core Rule Books, which can be found at Drivethrurpg.com
If you don't have any of the books, you may find the Introductory Demo Kit (which includes an explanation of the rules and ready-to-play characters) at edenstudios.net/support.html

You may also find below several pre-generated ready-to-play characters for you to either play as is or to modify to your liking.  Also, feel free to ask the more experienced players to help you with character creation.

Ask first either through reply or PM if you want to use the Champion or Hero type for character creation.  I will no longer be accepting any more Champion or Hero types for now.

Investigators and White Hats may exchange up to 5 Drama Points for XP at a rate of 2 XP per 1 Drama Point.  In other words, if you trade in 3 Drama Points, you gain 6 XP for the purposes of improving your character.  Improving your character through XP, however, is a little different.

Raising an attribute point by one will cost 5 x new Attribute score.  So if you want to raise your strength from 2 to 3, for example, it'll cost 15 experience points.  Raising a skill point by one will cost 2 x new Skill score.  Learning a new skill (as in, raising it from 0 to 1) will cost 5 points.  Qualities cost the same as they do in experience points, but unless it's during character creation, you also have to role-play it out.  If you role-play really well, you may get the Quality for free.

I was thinking it'd be all free-form where you decide amongst yourselves beforehand how combat will end.  If you can't decide on who would win in a one-on-one, roll a 1d2.  Either that use either a butchered version of NWOD or All Flesh Must Be Eaten.

I heard that there's an RPG of Buffy and Angel, though.  Maybe I should try and track that one down... >_>

Sessha

There is a Buffy/Angel RPG out there Deathnote. Last time I checked I think you can find them at Drivethrurpg.com.

Deathnote

Thanks for the link, Sessha!  ^_^

Just had a look through the revised core rulebook.  Looks just like All Flesh Must Be Eaten, which I'm already somewhat familiar with.  It didn't mention anything about Demon or Half-Demon characters, though, so I looked through the Angel core rulebook as well and found that quality in that book.

Still, do you think it's a good idea to use that system?  I don't want the players to feel obligated to buy all the books before getting to play. ~_^

RubySlippers

How about a sorceress allied to the powers of light, a ceremonial mage sort?

Deathnote

I'm probably missing something here, but... I don't see why not?  :p

kckolbe

I'm thinking of an unofficial watcher type.  Also, I generally prefer systems, especially for games like this, where danger is an ongoing theme.

I have pretty much all the books on PDF that can be looked through. There was something that I wanted to run by you if I joined this game Deathnote.

Deathnote

Well, I wasn't planning on running a system-based game, but... the more I read through the books, the more I want to try it out.  I even ended up making a Demon package based on a character I once made for a Free-form Buffy game.  :p

Say, think it'd be alright to distribute the PDFs to everyone who doesn't have one?  ~_^

Sessha

I suppose I could do that but I'll need someplace to upload them. Oddly enough one of the concepts I was thinking about doing is a combination of stuff from the Angel Book and Buffy book Slayer's Handbook I believe it was. Also if you'd like my recomendation on the matter I would use the Angel character creation system. It offers far more open abilities than the Buffy creation system and is a bit more forgiving of characters.

Deathnote

Thanks, Sessha!  ^_^

I'm actually going to allow both Angel and Buffy books for this game.  I'll take your advice, though, and follow the Angel Character Creation System.  I haven't read through the whole thing for either books, so I didn't know there were any significant differences (besides the starting points for Character Types, but even then it says to give Buffy Character Types 5 extra Drama points so it'd still work out).

Sessha

The biggest difference between the two is in the tone. Buffy is definetly set for a much younger audience where as just like the show Angel is geared more towards Adults than teens. So the added character points and stat points reflect this overall gorwth. I also find most of the stuff in the angel book to be far more expansive than the Buffy book. Also having played the Angel system you can blow through five drama point pretty easily.

Looks like you lot need a rules refresher:

I don't mind buying the pdfs, personally.  I suppose if the majority of us own the rules, we can guide the rest through char creation.

Well there goes that idea DN. I'm not about to cross the Mods here. I enjoy my play time here too much to do that.

Well, crap.  I could've sworn I saw an exception for GMs distributing PDFs to their players on one of the online store's website.  Guess I remembered wrong.

Ooh!  I know!  Pre-generated characters!  I can recreate the ready-to-play characters and provide cliff-notes version of character creation in the Character Sheet Code I'll provide.  :p

They won't know exactly what each Quality, Drawback, or Skill does, but picking a choosing based on the names may give them the character that they have in mind.

So... we're down to only two people then?  Unless... Sessha, you're still interested, right?  Until we get more people, we could try a prequel of sorts and have it take place during the summer, before the intended game start.

Sessha

I am still interested yes. Though I'm debating how to build my character. I also had a couple of questions for you Deathnote namely just gm rulings. The Demon hunter package from the Angel book says that it can come with the drawback of all supernaturals are evil. Now everyone that I've played with has waved this drawback and I wanted to know if you were ok with that. Second off I wanted to ask if you had a problem with allow personally created drawbacks into the game? The last thing I wanted to ask you was if you could decide which character generation system you wanna go with. I can tell you from experence in both running the game and playing it, there is a difference in power level between Buffy and Angel.
Locked, cocked and ready to rock!

Deathnote

I've mostly been looking at the Angel books, so I'm going to say that we'll be using the character generation system based on that book.  You can still use the Buffy books for their qualities and drawbacks, though (we're eventually going to need a Slayer, after all).  Also, I'm going to keep the option of making a White Hat open.  If what you say about the different in power level is true, then most players are going to choose the Investigator character type over White Hat, anyway.  Besides, to turn a White Hat into an Investigator, all you have to do is deduct 5 drama points and add 10 skill points.  If this is happening during the game, we'll just say that the character went through a Rocky-style training montage.  :p

If you want to create your own drawback, just clear it with me first (preferably via PM so it doesn't get lost in the posts).  I'll compare it to the official qualities and drawbacks before making my decision.  While not required, it'd also help if you could point out the official drawback that your custom one is most similar to.

Finally, I had a look at the Demon Hunter Quality and it looks like the drawback you're talking about is a part of the training package.  Honestly, a Mild Delusion about the Supernatural really doesn't seem all that bad.  The character's still playable and can still work in a cast full of witches and good demons.  Also, role-play opportunities!  ^_^  Still, I'm going to rule in the option of getting rid of the drawback by raising the Demon Hunter Quality by 1 point.  Most Demon Hunters (AKA NPCs) will have hang-ups about the supernatural.  That extra point cost will reflect your character's ability to keep an open mind in spite of what they've seen.

Btw, I'm not all that familiar with the rules yet, but I'm guessing that the drawbacks you get from Training Packages don't count towards your limit of 10 drawbacks during character creation?  Makes sense to me, anyway.  ~_^

Question for you, Sessha, since you've played this system before.  Are both Champion and Investigator types supposed to be allowed or is the GM supposed to limit the cast to only one type?  Have you played in a game that mixes both?  How did those games go?

Sessha

Thank you for the clarification on that one DN. As for your your question it's Champion and Vetran are playble characters. The different starting packages are a guideline for the power level of the game. I've always played using the Champion set-up. I find it offers a wide range of abilities for characters to play with and makes for more balanced characters. Also it may not seem like it but that difference in skill points makes a HUGE difference. I'll get that PM to you though soonest.
Locked, cocked and ready to rock!

kckolbe

The way I saw it is that there would be a Champion or two and the rest would be White Hats/Investigators.  In Buffy, both Buffy and Spike would have been Champions.

I like the ruling for Demon Hunter.  The 1 point drawback is there largely for balance, so getting rid of it should raise the cost of the package.

Are Drama Points really that worthless?  Hmm... I'm considering allowing the option of both Champion and Hero types (Hero types get 5 extra Drama Points) alongside Investigators and White Hats.  Just to keep character options open.  ~_^

Ooh!  I know!  Hero types (+5 Drama Points) and Investigators!  Would that work?  Hero types have more Attribute and Quality Points, but Investigators have more Skill Points.  It would basically be as though Cordelia from Angel Season 1 went back in time and teamed up with Season 1 Buffy.  That's an accurate analogy, right?  :p

Edit: Scratch that.  It just occurred to me that a Hero Type could just grab Qualities that grant Skill Points to bring themselves up to an equivalent of 25 Skill Points.

kckolbe

The three types aren't meant to be equal, and I am okay with that.  Buffy was stronger than the rest (except maybe for Spike).  While some characters like Willow and Giles had skills or knowledge that made them useful, they were never as important, and I think it is important to keep that distinction.  You saw the partial sheet I threw up was as a White Hat, which I am completely comfortable playing as long as Champion/Hero types are in the minority and there are no Veteran/Experienced Hero types.

I haven't decided yet if I want to play a female character. But I'll point out that drama points are not useless, in fact they are the most useful things in the game. You can spend a drama point before a roll and add a +10 bonus to that specific roll. Drama points can also be used to mitigate damage and there are several other things they can be used for.

When I was talking about maintaining a ratio, I meant a ratio between White Hats / Investigators and Heroes / Champions.  For a group of four, it'd probably be a 1:1 ratio.  For a group of 6 and above, a ratio of around 2:1 in favour of White Hats / Investigators should be fine.  At least, that's what I'll be aiming for.

Anyways, yes.  Whoever is playing the Slayer may use the Hero and Champion character types.  I'd prefer knowing who's going to be playing the Slayer, but permission is pretty much guaranteed.  :p

Lolz I have no idea what any of that means....However I wouldn't mind making my character her Watcher for story purposes.
Status: Stepping away for a while.

Deathnote

Okay, the character sheet for Emmy's char looks good so far.  I had to double-check the Slayer Quality to notice the +2 bonus to Willpower.  Didn't realize they get that too.  :p

Btw, if Emmy's char has been raised to be a slayer, then the Slayer-in-Training Quality might be worth considering:
Slayer-in-Training (4)
- Enhanced Attributes [+1 to any two separate physical attribute (so Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution)]
- Enhanced Skills [+1 to Acrobatics, Kung Fu, Getting Medieval, and Occultism]
- Obligation (Important - Watcher's Council) Drawback level 1
- Adversary (Various) Drawback level 1

Slayer-in-Training and Slayer can be taken together (you get Kendra), but the skill bonuses don't stack.  Total cost of both Qualities together becomes 18 points.

@Batman4560 - You'll be wanting the Watcher Quality, then.  It costs 5 points (You start out with 10 points for Qualities) and the bonuses are listed below:
Watcher (5)
- Enhanced Attribute [+1 to any physical attribute (so Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution)]
- Enhanced Skills [+2 to Getting Medieval]
- Memorized Occult Lore [+2 to any roll related to learning more about a supernatural creature]

I would also suggest that you take some level of the Obligation Drawback, just to reflect your character's obligations to the Watcher's council (not really required, though).

kckolbe

So, would it just be +1 Acrobatics and Occultism?  Everything else seems covered.

Deathnote

The two physical attribute bonuses from Slayer-in-Training actually stacks with the attribute bonuses from Slayer.  I'm not entirely sure about the drawbacks, but I imagine that the Adversary drawback is to reflect the extra enemies the Slayer-in-Training made during field-training.  It doesn't have to stack with Adversary (Vampires & Demons).  That drawback could be about some other kind of enemy.

As for Obligation... well... remember when Buffy turned her back on the Watcher's Council, but continued her Slayer duties nonetheless?  That tells me that the Obligation to the Watcher's Council is actually different from the Obligation to Slayer duties.  Still, I could see how they could be one and the same.  Makes sense not to include this drawback in the combo package, so... yeah.  No need to include this drawback, then.  ^_^

kckolbe

Oh, okay.  I like the explanation of obligation, and would prefer to keep that over the adversary one, though both come out to plot hooks for the group that are unlikely to be char specific.

Sessha

Hey DN. I noticed something recently that made me really realize why starting with Champion is better than Investigator. There is a little rule in the book that basicly says that humans can only raise one stat one time, period.  The investigator set does kinda short change the human characters badly.

Hmm... probably should have kept this a Free-Form game, then... ah well!  I've already put in too much time into reading the books to quit now!  :p

By the way, that rule that limits human increases to Attributes via XP sounds really lame, so I'm getting rid of that.  Human maximum limits still apply, though!

Also, to balance things out between Champions/Heroes and Investigators/White Hats a little, I'm considering allowing the latter group to exchange up to five Drama Points for 2 XP per Drama Point.  Spending XP to gain Qualities will not require role-playing if it's done during Character Creation.  Qualities cost the same in XP, by the way.  Still considering this option.  Thoughts, people?

kckolbe

That does seem a reasonable compromise.  After all, xp can be exchanged for Drama Points.

Character Background:  Eric was born to a rather affluent family, his father a radar engineer for Lockheed Martin, one of the primary Department of Defense contractors.  He took an interest in history before long, particularly ancient myths.  By the time he finished junior high he knew all of the Greek myths, and he continued on to Norse and Egyptian in high school.  He attended UCLA and focused on history and world religions, eventually pursuing a degree in Sociocultural Anthropology.  By 26 he'd earned his PhD, continuing to focus on the role of religions throughout history and narrowing that to the Middle Ages.  Shortly after graduation, he had a book published on the transitions from pagan cultures into modern day Catholicism.  Eric was recognized by the academic community, and his publisher gave him a significant advance for his next book, in which he promised to link the Catholic Church to vampire myths.

Eric had decided his second book would focus on the myths regarding vampires, given their current presence in American pop culture, and a tour of several European and southwest Asian countries was arranged.  He started in Iran, as Persian pottery was the first known record of vampiric depictions.  He then went on to many other countries, discovering several other ancient tales about them.  As he'd hoped, he found a significant lack of records leading up to the 12th century, when they first appeared in Hungary.  Thus far his findings supported his theory that the Catholic church had revived the fears of vampires in order to gain power, and he began investigating sites of attacks and old churches, learning many of the myths surrounding his new topic.  He found scrolls, paintings, stories, and vampires.  The attack killed his tour guide and one other, and Eric barely survived, though many of his notes were left behind.  The Catholic Church pulled some strings, and Eric ended up having to leave Hungary due to pressure from the host government, though not until after having even more of his materials confiscated.  His publisher was devastated when Eric told him he would not be writing the book as planned, though he did not give the real reason why.  He was forced to pay back some of the advance on the second book, and his second book, which remained on the topic of vampires, was not a success.  Though his decision to not say that vampires were real prevented him from losing credibility, he instead was deemed guilty of publishing a book too uninteresting to discuss.

You may exchange up to 5 Drama Points for XP at a rate of 2 XP per 1 Drama Point.

Edit: Updated first post to reflect this.

kckolbe

Updated my character sheet.  I spent 11 points on Drawbacks, but since 10 is the limit, I only gave myself 10 extra points from them.  I wanted the extra Drawback enough to take it for free.

Alright, let's do a quick rundown of who's playing as what:

Sessha - Mystical Swordsman (Champion)
kckolbe - Cross-Wielding Demon Hunter (White Hat)
Emmykins - Slayer and Witch (Champion)
Batman4560 - Watcher (Investigator/White Hat)
Muse - Spring-Heeled Jack (Investigator/White Hat?)
Callie Del Noire - (not sure if still interested)

Hmm... roll call?  I want to know who's still interested.

Muse

I've had trouble sorting through all the back posts.  Is there any way I can do Spring Heel as a Champion?

I'd like for there to be at least four Investigators/White Hats before accepting a third Champion.  Right now, we have two players who are confirmed to be playing as Investigators/White Hats.  Right now, I'm talking to a potential third Investigator via PM.  If Callie Del Noire plays an Investigator/White Hat as well (note sure if he's still interested), then you may play a Champion.

If we get enough people, I'm going to consider running two modules at the same time, which I'll customize so that they intertwine somehow.

Emmykins

I am nearly done with my sheet. I have been fighting with backstory a few days, and should have it posted tomorrow.

Above Jack Wellington’s desk is a custom plaque with a quote from the Anglican book of common prayer, 1870s.

From goulies and ghosties and long legged beasties and things that go bump in the night, dear lord deliver us.

His desk is an antiquate hardwood piece from the time of Victoria.  The computer is year old alien ware.  Both top of the line antiques.

Jack is a heavy smoker, but favors expensive pipe tobacco and Native American cigarettes.  If his partners let him, he will smoke the pipe inside.

Despite his old world flare, he appreciates American muscle in his automobiles and drives a well maintained late 80s Mustang and enjoys a friendly flirtation with his mechanic Carli Jade.

Professionally, Jack carries a sword cane and an appropriate sidearm with a concealed carry permit.  He does keep a clip of silver bullets handy, and another of hollow points.

Jack has a middle class home in a gentrified district of downtown.  Last year, he adopted a 16 year old runaway prostitute named Kendra.   He has given a key to his fellow investigators, with a standing invitation to mooch within proper mooching etiquette, or seek shelter behind the iron bars and blend of Anglican and hexagramic wards.

Just added a small bit about Croixville into the original post:

QuoteCroixville is a fictional town of unrealistic size and geography and contains many elements of a large city, so... pretty much like any other fictional small town from a TV Show.

Deathnote

Whelp, our slayer has withdrawn from the game.  No problem.  We can still proceed as planned.  ^_^

Hmm... maybe I should rename the game to "Croixville, Chartrain County" or something.  >_>

I know it's taken me longer than I should have, but with RL the way it's been the last few weeks what with the holidays it's been a bit rough to create something, but here is a bare bones for you guys to look at. Btw I added a Quality on the character sheet that can be taken by the other players if they so wish. DN and I discussed it and it's a perfectly balanced package to take. It's called the Marital Artist package.  It provides +1 Dex and +1 Con, +2 to Getting Medieval and +1 to Kung Fu with a level 1 honorable drawback which makes it a 4 point Quality.  It's different from the demon hunter package in that it's more skill focus oriented and it applies specific stat bumps rather than a random number of three and the point costs equal out to the same expenditure.

Now without further ado my character for everyone to look over.

I'm going to have to track down a copy myself, but just from googling it, it looks like there's been nothing but positive responses to that book and it sounds like it's perfectly compatible with the Angel and Buffy books.

Go ahead and use it for now.  Just be sure to let me know what each Quality does.

Noted. In my opinion, it's my favorite unisystem book. It adds a couple different aspects to the Buffyverse that I always felt it was lacking (Fae, Ghosts, and more in depth sorcery.) I bought the PDF, and I can tell you if was probably the best gaming book purchase I've made in the past 5 years. We use it constantly in my group for our games (Mostly BuffyAngel-verse stuff) and have since the book was released.

Did I see you capped Champions and Experienced Champions somewhere? Just so I know what points I'll need to go off of.

Eh heh... sorry, but we already have three champions.  I won't be accepting any more Champion types until more Investigators / White Hats join.

Investigators / White Hats are, however, allowed to exchange up to 5 drama points for 2 XP per drama point exchanged (so up to 10 XP).  Hopefully, this will make the cast a bit more balanced.

*Nods* That's what I thought....I'll have to look through my bin of characters and see if I have any that are still "Investigator/White Hat" level.

The extra xp is nice though...that'll most likely help you balance things out.

Out of curiosity...since I typically play sandbox style games....How do dice games work on E?
“Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time."

Sessha

The easiest way on E to use dice is to use the Dicebot tab. It records your rolls so others can check them and you post the resualts of the roll in the thread it's called for. Though if we are gonna be opening up things from GoA I wouldn't be adverse to seeing if it was possible to use Witchcraft stuff in Buffy. All the conversion stuff was done in the Magic Box book from Eden studios. Though the eaisest way around that one is for certain powers and abilities which require the expenditure of essence in Witchcraft treat it as if it were a willpower doubled roll in Buffy/Angel. The biggest hurtle to get over with GoA and Buffy is that of the magic system. Some spells are more powerful in GoA than in Buffy and vice versa. Thankfully the GoA book offers a conversion table on that one.

Another huge difference from Buffy to GoA is that in GoA the max stat cap for humans has been raised to 9. Something to look at DN. Just thought I'd give all the information I could.  :-)

Yep that would be true. My biggest thing that I like is the actual definition of magic in GoA. Unlike in Buffy where it's magic and there are a small list of spells otherwise it's a free for all with pretty much anything goes mentality. Though if we do get into the GoA magic system I'm gonna see if it's possible for me to use Nature, Shamanism or Elementalism magic not sure which right now. Heck if he allows it from Witchcraft I'd go with a spirit patron who grants me boons and stuff.  :-)

Of course had we been allow stuff from Witchcraft from the outset I would have been considering doing a combination of the Keys of Solomon and the Divine Inspiration Qualities from that system. Oh the ideas!  ;D ;D ;D

I've begun using almost all the Eden Studios settings in my game. The only one I haven't bothered with including simply because GoA does it better is All Flesh Must Be Eaten.

Of course I had an idea that used the same concepts I mentioned earlier with making a Templar Knight who uses the Keys of Solomon and Divine Inspiration and then when I've accumulated enough points for it the character would die but end up coming back as a Kurophim I believe it was. It's a heck of an XP sink but the rewards are kinda cool.
