Steam punk most of us know it well, some not so much. I would like to get a small group(4-8) of players preferably bi but not restricted to. This would be freeform in human bondage groups, NC could be discussed if theres a larger interest.

Keeping it relatively simple its a humans only world. The setting being an almost futuristic world with close to victorian style and vast amounts of technology revolving around steam power. Steam powered ballista's and crossbows would be the strongest ranged weapons aswell as spring operated rifles. Gun powder is rare and flintlocks are expensive. Swords are widely used (rapiers being prefered amongst the civilized) Airships(balloons) and trains are the main transportation. The plot idea I have is my character is an outlaw who has just stolen himself one of the fastest airships ever made. Needing a crew to properly fly it though he puts a plan in motion to team up with some fellow riff raff types and use the ship to pirate his way to fame and fortune. Basically he would need a pilot, engineer, mechanic and navigator for the ship and then a few more criminal/fighter types to make up the whole crew. The pilot/navigator could be one person as well as the engineer/mechanic but I think a character for each would be best. Most of the fights/deaths will be with NPCS. Would like to discuss as a group on how lay out the character sheets.
Rules:
-Minimum 2 paragragh posts

If you are using skyships that I have to suggest Space 1889, a delightful setting that includes trips to Mars and other planets

A random character idea that danced in my head while reading this:

*****************************************

The fast skyship has slowed as almost no smoke puffs from the stacks and from below there is a hollow CLANGGGG!!'

each running step toward the engine room brings more Loud Clangs as if some one is pounding the engine apart...in fact as the Captain half stumbles into the engine room the chief engineer is standing on the engine by what seems to be a large wheel or piston and has the HUGE 4' long wrench that could pass as a war hammer in her hands and swings it hard against the metal CLLLAANNGG!!!

"peice of shit...CLLLAaaaAANGG!!!  Calhone Engines ...CLLLAaaaAANGG!!! They ALways sieze up ...CLLLAaaaAANGG!!!..Just like the Aldrians to build a fast ship ...CLLLAaaaAANGG!!! and put a piece of shit engne in it...CLLLAaaaAANGG!!!" sputter sputter hzzzzzzzz!...CLLLAaaaAANGG!!!HIZZZZZZZZ clank sputter rumble

She climbs off the engine blowing strands of hair from her face with a puff from her pouty lips and levels hard grey eyes at the captain as she still holds the HUGE WRENCH... "it is gonna take me about 3 hours to get this peice of shit oiled, greased and ready so go make kissy face with the pursuit" the engne makes a weird sound ...CLLLAaaaAANGG!!!

Steampunk sounds nice.

I was originally going to push for the engineer/mechanic, but Phaia's already got a seed and it'd be a shame to waste it.

What it looks like you didn't think to include, though, is a ship's doctor. Victorian steampunk medicine is so much fun, and moreso if the semi-futuristic setting means I can bust out the clockpunk prosthetics. :D

Phaia

if you want the engineer you can have it,  i get these weird ideas that pop into my head when i read things and that was one of them
and if you do go with a doctor do not forget how they treated female hysteria

Ships doctor sounds like a great role, cant believe I missed that. ;)

Thanks for the suggestion but I'd like to keep it simple. Seeing as theres hardly even guns and planes I don't think trips to mars would be very plausible for this one.

Chasseybaby

I would love to play a mechanic if its not called already x^^x

You could be the mechanic so long as Phaia doesn't want it.

Phaia

sure no problem

that was just something that popped into my brain that i thought was amusing

Alright very close to eight intereted players, guess it's official. I will post an OOC/character thread with the outline for the character sheets. Won't be able to until after work tomorrow though. If anyone has an idea or request for what the character outlines should look like shoot me a pm. For now I bid all of you who showed an interest a goodnight.

Kimera

I would love to play the pilot (don't think anyone called it yet)

Miroque

Systemwise, I would suggest Victoriana. Its pure steampunk all the way.

Depending on setting/genrewise, I might be intrested :) Steampunk is right on my alley... :)

So this is going to be a system game? I thought it was a freeform story - not that being systemized stops me in any way.

Though I'd advocate FATE as far as systems go if we do such, since it's a very 'lite' system that hopefully won't scare away freeformers.

Specifically, using Spirit of the Century might be a good option, since it's available as an SRD online for free, and is specifically designed for pulp-style adventures.

Avengel69

Off to work now so can't put in my full two cents. So far we have the mechanic reserved for Chasseybaby, the pilot for Kimera and possibly the doctor for Glyphstone. I did say I'd like it to be freeform but I'm not against holding a vote for freeform or system once we get the discussion board going. So an engineer and navigator would be needed as well as our pirate/fighters.(weapons specialist, sword duelist, marksmen ect.) I hope to have the ooc thread going tonight by 8pm pacific time at the latest.

TheGlyphstone

I can see Engineer and Mechanic being separate specialties, but what's a pilot going to do that a navigator can't and vice versa?

Other non-generic roles for people to consider:
-First Mate (chain of command, yo)
-Cook (a crew's gotta eat)
-Carpenter (someone needs to keep this hull in one piece so the metal bits don't fall out)
-Gunnery master (keeps the ship-mounted and armory weaponry functional)
-Cabin boy/girl (or assistant to any of the above)

Chasseybaby

So excited got my girl all picked out and ready for this game! ^^

TheGlyphstone

Finding steampunk-ish doctor pictures is incredibly hard. I keep getting pages of Doctor Who costumes instead.

You could always write the description by hand...
"Damn kids doing work. Back in my day we worked 18 hours a day and still had time for 12 hours of fun before a solid 8 hours of sleep in 24 hours".

TheGlyphstone

That's what I usually do, but then I feel left out when everyone is sporting shiny pictures.

Carlissa

Then make them jealous with your thought out wordplay. You don't need pictures! Your own power is all you need!

I thought navigator would be the one to read maps and plot out places for jobs, no reason a pilot can't do this.

Pretty much. The two roles have so much redundancy that it'd be easier to just have them be one person to start with. And there's plenty of just-plain 'Pirates' for people to be if they don't want to be part of the 'Command Team'.
