Doomsday

A year after the deaths of Batman and Joker in the events of Endgame*...

The city of Gotham is still rebuilding. Hundreds of thousands of citizens are still displaced or unaccounted for after the final Joker virus turned the entire population of the city into raving lunatics. Though they’ve since been cured, many died during the Endgame*, many more eventually found themselves living homeless on the streets or in the underground.

The city is vulnerable, and rather than allow a peaceful moratorium so that Gotham might mourn its fallen knight, the crime elements are already mobilizing to take advantage of this perceived weakness! It’s up to the remaining heroes of Gotham to fill the large shoes of the Dark Knight!

*See Batman Vol. 2, 35-40! -D.C Doomsday and Jolly JamesSureWould! Or read this spoiler:

Batman Endgame
Batman is attacked by members of the Justice League who are under the influence of a brand of Joker Venom powerful enough to turn the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and the Flash against Batman. After narrowly subduing his comrades, Batman begins to study the Joker, looking for answers. He goes to Arkham Asylum to investigate the Joker's former cell, but is locked in there by none other than the Joker himself!

Batman eventually manages to escape, but in the time it took him to find his way out of a cell that had been designed to be inescapable, the Joker has unleashed another Joker Venom throughout Gotham City, turning hundreds of thousands or even millions of Gothamites into laughing murderers.

Long story short, Batman finds a cure for the virus deep in the caverns beneath Gotham City. As the Joker detonates tons of explosives overhead of them, Joker and Batman have one last final duel before they are both killed by falling rocks.

In the comics, of course, they both somehow survive, but for the purpose of this game, Joker and Batman are permanently dead.

This is a game about the supporting cast of the Batman comics, and how they function when Batman isn’t around anymore. The three Game Managers (Alias, Doomsday, and JamesSureWould) will organize minor, major, and epic crossover events that run parallel to classic Batman storylines.

Basic Game Info List - based on Moraline's outline for games!
Game: The Fallen Knight

  • Game Section: This is in the NC-Exotic due to certain characters being not quite human, and the strong possibility for Bondage/non-consensual scenes. However, anything NC that happens in game will be in spoiler blocks and will be discussed and agreed upon ahead of time. In short, if you don't want to deal with NC stuff, you won't have to.
  • Who is the RP open to? This game is open to all sexualities, genders, and players of whatever type they wish.
  • Setting - Gotham City, modern age, based on a combination of the New 52 continuity, post crisis continuity, and the animated series. If none of that makes sense, don’t worry. Those notes are just for the comic dorks. It’s basically the generic ‘Batman’ setting. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. All of the gms love to answer questions
  • Plot Basics - Takes place after the events of Batman: Endgame, the events of which have left Joker and Batman dead. The PC’s will play as either canon, re-imagined or original heroes as they try to fill the void that Batman left in his death as defenders of Gotham.
  • Character creation info/guidelines: See character sheets below. Characters will not have stats/builds. The GM’s may choose to use weighted dice rolls to determine the outcome of NPC v.s. PC actions.
  • Required Resources: A little bit of knowledge of the Batman and Gotham-centric comics, the DC universe, or at least a willingness to familiarize yourself. Doomsday has a ton of comics on hand stored digitally if you wanted to take a peek at a certain character! JamesSureWould spends way too much time reading comics and also has a massive comic library he can share. And Alias is super nice!
  • Game Pacing: This will vary by each thread and its participants. A minimum of once a week is expected, more often is preferred.
  • How much sexual activity is likely to occur or expected, if any? Players may explore sexual activities in the private thread. Main threads and special event threads will likely not contain sex, and will instead be driven by action and intrigue.
  • Whether tagging will be used or not: A basic character tag will be created and given to the players to use.
Game Master Info / GM(s) Participation Level (If/where applicable)

  • Will there be a Co-GM? The game will be ran by Doomsday, Alias and JamesSureWould.
  • How guided will the play be(sandbox, directed etc)? This game will be half sandbox and half plot. Players will be free to interact with each other as they wish and there will be NPCs available as well. There will always be one or more events running.
  • What extent will players be allowed to create/use environment or setting details? Players will be able to affect the environment within the limitations for their characters, but anything major needs to go through a GM.
  • How NPC's will be handled. (If any) - (By GM and/or players, and what expectations): Basic NPCs can be created/used at any time but anything major should go through a GM. You can feel free to play in the sandbox wide enough to go rob a bank if you want... but we'll be the  ones running that once you get there :)
  • How active will the GM be? Very active as a group, with slight variances in between individual GM’s. And if one of the GMs will be out of commision for some reason, the other two gms should be able to take over to a limited degree
  • Will there be an OOC thread? Yes, at least one for OOC chatter, and more for game information and character sheets.
  • How to contact/approach GM with questions? If it is something that everyone could benefit from please use the OOC thread, otherwise feel free to PM us as a group.
  • How will decisions be resolved?  We value contributions from everyone and no opinion will be outright dismissed, but GMs have the final say.
  • Will PvP be allowed (if applicable)? Yes! We are giving players plenty of freedom... however character death won't happen unless agreed upon or through major plot (and will have plenty of warnings before it gets there). Also, remember there are always bigger fish in the pond with many ways of knowing things you want to remain hidden. Think twice before antagonizing your playmates (unless you have some awesome ideas, then work with the GM!)
Additional:

  • Please remember to always respect other's "Offs" (And "Ons!")
  • Everyone is expected to post at least once a week. If you're having any sort of trouble just let us know! We can skip over you or move you to inactive. People will not be penalized for missing this deadline unless it becomes a problem for other players.
  • Can I join the game after it has already started? Yes! It’s encouraged. We want a very active game and applications will likely not be shut down for any reason.
  • Expected Writing Style: All writing will be done in 3rd person past tense. We won't nitpick spelling and grammar, that would be hella hypocritical, but try to stay halfway decent

Posting Rules...

  • Please try to post at least once a week for GM-ran events. If something comes up, that’s fine, all of the GM's understand life coming up and interfering with the RP. Just let one of the GM's know.
  • Third person past tense. Please.
  • Respect other people's characters, which means do unto others, etc., and no god-moding.
  • No meta-gaming. This is an iffy rule since many of the Batfamily characters have advanced tech around them and/or are genius level intellects, but be mindful about what they don't know, too.
  • GM decisions are final, especially when it comes to PC v.s. PC and PC v.s. NPC conflicts. The goal of the roleplay is not to 'win', it's to craft a compelling story for everyone to enjoy and engage with.
  • Not necessarily a rule, but please read the Oath of Drake and take it into your heart and mind.

Doomsday

Making A Character...

How To Apply

  • Use the character sheet listed below.
  • PM the three GM's your application. (Doomsday, Alias, JamesSureWould)
  • Do not post your application in this recruitment thread.
  • Do not post your application in the approved character thread unless you have GM approval.

Character Notes...

  • Characters should be ultimately good. The characters aren’t assassins or mercenaries. They might act like guns for hires, they might kill if things get bad, but they will ultimately do the right thing.
  • Villains are, for the moment, not up to be PCs. This may change later, so let us know if there is a villain that you would want to play, but don’t start writing a character sheet for them just yet.
  • Re-imaging a character is fine. We are fine with genderbent character and shifting ages/races/backstories/etc. But the important part is that you stay true to the spirit of the character. If you wanna turn Tim Drake into a smart hispanic girl, rock on. But if you want to make Tim Drake the dumb Robin, then we will have issues. If you’re not sure what the ‘spirit’ of a character is, just let us know and we’ll gladly help you figure it out
  • Original characters are fine, but try to keep them in the vein of other canon characters. It should be noted that we will give more scrutiny to OC applications than we would to canon characters. We do have reasons for this scrutiny, it’s not just us being dicks.
  • We ultimately prefer quality of posts over speed; similarly, multiple people can submit sheets for the same character, we will decide which, if any, get the spot based on those criteria.
  • One character to start. We’ll start to let people submit secondary characters once we think you’ve shown you’re a good and reliable player.
  • Characters must be at least 18 years of age or older. We are aware that will require certain characters (Damian Wayne being a big example) to be aged up.
  • When constructing your character’s history, please do not directly copy and paste from the DC wikia/comic vine. We can tell. While it is a great resource for learning about a character, and some of it will obviously bleed through, we’re interested in how you will write the character. Not how a wikia editor will write the character.

We have had some players express concerns over what sort of characters we want to see. This is a game about loss and grieving as much as it is a game about cool superheroes doing awesome things. So the characters involved should have a reason to feel grief at the death of Batman. Maybe he trained them, maybe they grew up looking up to him, maybe they worked extensively with someone trained by him and they feel grief through proxy.

This is also a game about the Bat Family. That means the character should have some connections to the Batman supporting cast. These connections aren’t spelled out during your application process, but we want the potential to be there. We don’t want loner characters that make us ask ‘why would the rest of the characters want to hang out with this person’.

Try to consolidate your character history down to important events that defined your character's life. For example if I were going to write Tim Drake's bio; I would write a third person past tense narrative that outlines and details these bullet points:

  • Born in Gotham
  • Child prodigy
  • Deduces identity of Batman and Robin
  • After second Robin's death, approaches Batman and Nightwing, to ask to help them fight crime
  • Becomes the third Robin, known as the smart, techy Robin that might be a better detective than Baman himself (minor examples)
  • Serves as Robin for several years before rebranding himself as Red Robin and joins the Teen Titans.

Again, just a rough example, but every thing described is core to the character, and defined them in some way. I wouldn't mention any major events or story arcs that don't do these things. For example, I wouldn't mention No Man's Land, even though Tim was there and did a lot in it, because it doesn't help to explain who Tim is, and who knows, maybe the GM's want No Man's Land not to take place in the past, but in the future? ::)

Additional notes:

Quick Note about skills vs advantages, as we’ve had some confusion over this. A skill is something you can train and work at. Martial arts or stealth could be skills. An advantage is something more intrinsic to the character; Being a light sleeper or having a high IQ are more along the lines of advantages. Super powers, if your character has any, would go into the advantages section

And you’re ever curious as to how we want something, please look at the completed/accepted characters to get an idea.

    Suggested Character List...

So! you read through our whole introduction; and you’re thinking ‘Wow, what a neat-o idea,’ but you aren't sure who exactly you wanna play? We’ve got you covered, and look no further! Here’s a smattering list of possible characters you could portray. If there’s someone you want to play that isn’t on the list, just ask!

    Males

    Female
[Note from the desk of Jolly JamesSureWould: Some may notice that there isn’t an ‘other’ or ‘trans’ category, just Male and Female. That’s not meant as a slight or an oversight, there just aren’t many trans comic characters. And there are even fewer heroes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be a trailblazer!]
[Yet another note from Jolly JamesSureWould: Some may notice that a few characters are bolded. There are characters that we think are sorely missing from the current game, and we would go the extra mile to help any potential applicants to fill these roles.]

If you wanna know more about any of the characters, click on their name! Each name is a link to a wiki entry on them that can help you figure out what they’re all about. Or you can pm me, and I’ll do my best to get back to you in a timely fashion.
And if you’d like to see more lists of characters, these are two great sources!

Hey there, one of the gms! Just popping into say that we're looking for fresh blood for our game, and we've reposted this thread as a way to make sure that new players might be turned off by the 10+ pages of half finished applications and weird ooc chatter. We like to save the weird ooc chatter for the ooc thread :)

    VoluptuousVixen

    Doomsday

I've heard that some potential applicants have been confused, just wanted to clear things up; people have seen our other thread locked, but the game is still open, we simply re-launched the Group Interest thread because the other one was super fat with OOC :-)

    Doomsday

We've added four new player characters to our roster! Cassandra Cain, Tim Drake, Harley Quinn and Bette Kane! Still open to applications for all other listed canon's, and OC's if they fit the universe.

    ShadowFox89

What relative strength in characters are you looking for? I have an OC that is roughly Young Justice Season 1 Superboy strength, but not exactly that level.

We usually go for characters that are close to baseline human, with few/if any powers.

But you are more than free to throw in an application :)

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT APPLYING TO THE GAME!

So, we've had some questions about what exactly we look for in an application. The truth is that it's a case by case basis that's affected dozens of different things. But we figured some guidelines and examples couldn't hurt.

These are just a few guideline questions to help figure out whether or not the character would fit in the game.

    • Did this character have a connection with Batman, or a strong connection with one of Batman's 'core family' (One of the Robins, Batgirls, Catwoman, Azreal, etc)
    • Is there a reason this character would work in a team with the rest of the characters (loner characters might be fun to play for some, but they are awful to try and gm for 99% of the time)
    • Will they fit among the other characters? This is a bit loose, and means a few things: Morals, aesthetics, methodology, mo, and typical 'scope' are all things we think about when we're figuring out if a character 'fits'. This one of the more subjective questions we do realize.
    • Is there a reason they would be sticking around in Gotham and helping out the other characters, instead of dealing with whatever problems they might normally deal with?

There's also a fifth question we ask during review, but that's more a question of the player
Would this player be able to handle this character? This is obviously subjective, but its one of the reasons we have everybody do a review/revision. I mean, we want every character to be as good as they could be, so we do ask players to fix things up that we think could be improved, but we also wanted to see how a potential player would handle being told 'this needs to be fixed'. If they can't handle a simple request like that, chances are good they won't be able to handle other things when they're in the game.

    And now, two examples

Someone like Zatanna could fit well enough
    1. Z has had a relationship with Bruce Wayne (and/or Dick Grayson depending on canon), helped batman on cases, worked with him on the justice league, helped out Barbara Gordon, etc

    2. Z has been on the justice League, knows a few of the 'Family members', and is generally a team player.

    3. She doesn't really kill, and the stage magician look fits in well enough in Gotham's superhero fashion scene. She fights a healthy mix of crazy magical villains and common thugs, so she could do well enough on the streets of Gotham.

    4. She was born in Gotham (depending on canon), so she has an attachment to the city.

In this case we would really just have to figure out if the potential player could handle the power that Zatanna wields without making themselves the focal point of the game, and if their version of Zatanna fits with the style of the game.

On the other hand, someone like Green Lantern (let's say Jon Stewart), would be a much harder sell even though he's close to Zatanna in terms of power level.

    1. Jon has a professional relationship with Bruce through the justice league, and that's about it.

    2. Jon is a team player, able to be a leader or a solider, so he'd fit there.

    3. As a Green Lantern, he doesn't necessarily kill, but how the GL corp deals with villains is alot different than how the Bat Fam does. The villains GL's usually deal with are incredibly different than the one BatFam does. And the glowing green kinda clashes with the dark moody colors everyone else has.

    4. Not really. GLs are usually going on space adventures or saving the world. And Jon has no real attachment to Gotham over anywhere else.

Those guidelines should also show why we show preferential treatment towards canon characters. With a canon character, those guidelines are like a check list we can run down. Then we just have to figure out what needs revised, talk to the player, and make sure they'd fit the game.

With an oc, we have to pour over the sheet like its some lost text, trying to figure out if they fit all the criteria when we have nothing but the scant text in the character sheet to give us a clue, and then we also have to do the same review process we do for other characters.

    Diesel Heart

We've just hit Big Game Status here at The Fallen Knight and are still accepting character applications.  If you're interested, please be sure to consider all of the information above before applying.  There are opportunities for you to jump right into the action as well as mingle with the characters already in play, and that's just from my side of things.  That's not taking into account others possible content about to be launched as a platform for vigilante, ass-kicking badassery.  We encourage you to come play with us!

Thanks to Warden for the kind words :D

With the ability to moderate our own sub and make it look nice, we're hoping to loosen things up a bit, allow for more creativity and experimentation. Just shoot a PM to myself, JamesSureWould and Alias if you had ANY questions or interest about joining our lovely little community!

    Ace Flyer

Still plenty of room for more people!

Rumor is, even, that a very expensive gem and art exhibit is opening up in the Gotham Museums soon...The heroes might appreciate some extra eyes and ears when a certain Cat gets distracted by some new shiny things to add to her collection ;)

    Doomsday

Hello to everyone! Our game is still chugging along but, like all big group games, we desire more players to fuel our insatiable need for power and influence. A few of our players have commented on how much our game rewards a deep knowledge of comics, and how the application process felt intimidating if you weren’t well-versed in the subject matter. That was not intentional, and we the GM’s decided to try and correct that!

Every so often we’re going to post a character spotlight, a look at a character we think could fit in the game well, and try to give any potential players a starting point so they don’t feel so lost. We’ll go over history, suggest faceclaims, talk about what makes them cool, address possible connections with other characters, and even recommend some comics you could read if you’d want to.

And, as always, the GM’s are open to any and all questions you might have, so PM us (Doomsday, JamesSureWould and Alias) or talk to us in this thread.

And the first character spotlight will go up... Right now!

    Doomsday

    Character Spotlight...
    LUKE FOX AKA BATWING

    Basic Info
    Name: Lucas ‘Luke’ Fox

    Alias: Batwing

    Age: Suggested early-mid 20’s

    Possible Faceclaims
    Michael B Jordan

    Donald Glover

    John Boyega

    Trevor Jackson

    Tequan Richmond

    Brandon Mychal Smith

    Kofi Siriboe

    Overview of history
Son of Lucius Fox, who has been president, CEO, head of engineering and more at Wayne Enterprises.

Dual degrees in Engineering and Business Management from MIT.

When Batman Incorporated was announced as a plan to create a worldwide network of heroes, Luke wanted to be a part of it, training in MMA and performing minor feats of heroism to try to impress Batman, even saving Bruce Wayne’s life at a charity fundraiser.

Was passed over for the role of Batwing, but when David Zavimbe retired from that role, Luke was Batman’s first choice to be the next Batwing.

    What makes them cool
Three words. Iron Man Batman. That’s right, the Batwing armor is basically what would happen if Batman made an Iron Man Suit.

Oh, and he’s a young genius that graduated a year early from MIT. While not as skilled in combat or investigation as the rest of the Bat family, he makes up for it by outfitting his suit with all sorts of technical gadgets to give him an edge.

    Possible connections with other characters
Nightwing/Dick Grayson - Dick and Lucas are close in age, and were both the children of important people in Wayne Enterprises. Entirely Possible that they grew up hanging out as children, maybe even going to some of the same schools.

Batgirl/Barbara Gordon - In recent comics canon, Luke and Barbara worked together at Barbara’s tech start-up after he gave up being Batwing and were even romantically involved for a little while. (Sadly Barbara Gordon doesn’t have a tech start-up in this game, but hey, still could be fun!)

Red Robin/Timothy Drake - Two science dorks, and who both do work for Wayne Enterprises along with making gadgets for Batman Incorporated, Luke and Tim probably have a nerd rivalry going.

Bluebird/Harper Row - Inventor junkies, haven’t interacted much in canon comics but that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way!

How to fit them into the story
Here are four suggestions for how this character could be brought into the story of Fallen Knight. Obvious, these are all just suggestions. Let us know if you have a different idea, we’d love to hear it :)

    • Like it happened in the comics, Luke retired from being Batwing. The death of Batman brought him back into it though, knowing that Gotham needs him to be a hero more than he needs to be a normal person.
    • He never stopped being a hero, and was there from the beginning to help the family deal with the sudden surge of crime.
    • He was overseas, helping Batman Inc set up in an international city, when the news came through. It was only in the past month that he was able to get away and come back to Gotham.
    • Luke wasn’t Batwing before the death of Batman. After Bruce’s death, Dick called in all everyone he could. The first Batwing declined and said he was retiring anyway, so Luke Fox was recruited.

If you want to know more!
If you want to know more, here are a few comics that could give you a better idea of his character. This is in no way necessary, but let us know if you’re interested. We can hook you up

Batwing #19-34 is the main one we’d recommend. It’s focused on Luke and really delves into him as a character.

    Batman Eternal (The spectre storyline) #1, 2, 6, 15-17, 29-32, 37, 44, 45, 47-50, 52
    Batgirl #43, 46-48, 50, 51
These are both good, but he’s a backup character in both. Still, they can give some extra flavor to him.

Luke’s Comicvine page. This is a great resource if you just want a crash course in the character.

    Doomsday

    Character Spotlight...
    CASSANDRA CAIN
AKA BATGIRL AKA BLACK BAT AKA ORPHAN

    Basic Info
Name: Cassandra ‘Cass’ Cain/Cassandra ‘Cass’ Wayne

Alias: Batgirl, Black Bat, Orphan, Kasumi

Age: Suggested Late teens to early twenties

    Possible Faceclaims
    Haruka Abe

    Jessica Henwick

    Kiko Mizuhara

    Jeeja Vismistananda

    Maki Horikita

    Ellen Wong

    Overview of History
(This character has two distinct version of her history, so both are presented here. Either one could work in the game though, or you could pick and choose for a third option)

    New Earth Continuity (pre-2011):

The child of two of the world’s best assassins, Cass was trained from a young age to read people and their body language as well as a normal person read the written word. This made her hyper competent at fighting and martial arts, at the cost of social skills and the ability to speak.

She ran from her father after killing a man on her (an early) birthday. Seeing the light leave his eyes made her understand exactly what killing someone meant, so she ran from her father and spent years on the streets. Barbara Gordon took Cass in, slowly teaching her how to speak and communicate, so Cass was the natural choice to take over as Batgirl when Barbara was paralyzed. She was even adopted by Bruce and joined the Wayne family officially.

After Batman Inc was formed, she went to China, Hong Kong specifically, and became known as Black Bat.

    Prime Earth Continuity (2011-Present):

David Cain was an assassin under the employ of a mysterious woman called Mother, who trained killers from young ages to later sell them or their services to wealthy clientele. Mother believed that great trauma at a young age would maker her children more dangerous and devoted to her cause, and used mind-altering drugs to inflict such trauma. David, however, believed this to be inauthentic, and raised his infant daughter Cassie according to his own methods; Leaving her in complete silence as he taught her to kill, to see human lives as something to end.

Eventually she ran away and lived homeless on the streets of Gotham until Batman discovered her. He trained her to be a hero, not a killer, and when he disappeared after a final battle against the Joker, Cassie helped the Batfamily end Mother’s murderous reign. She then took on the mantle of her father, who had been killed by Mother in the end; Calling herself Orphan, she swore to defend Gotham with her new family.

    What makes them cool
Because of her upbringing, Cassie is considered one of the best fighters in the Batfamily; With Batman gone, she is the undisputed best. Her skill with reading people means that, very often, she can recognize what someone will do before they do it.

Raised without a spoken language and an education, Cassie has problems communicating, which can be a very interesting wrinkle in roleplay.

    Possible connections with other characters

Dick Grayson/Nightwing - An older brother, a mentor figure, and now the head of her family after Bruce’s death. Thanks to an unpredictable fighting style, and having trained for nearly as long as she has, He’s also one of the few who can give her a fight that doesn’t have an obvious winner.

Barbara Gordon/Batgirl - Her sister and the one who helped her find her place in the world, Cass feels very grateful for how Babs helped her when most others thought she was a lost cause.

Tim Drake/Red Robin - She views Tim as something of a younger brother, even though he’s older than she is. They make an excellent team though, his more mental skills balancing her physical nature.

Ben Turner/Bronze Tiger - Connected through Cassie’s mother, Lady Shiva, a former ally of Bronze Tiger via the League of Assassins.

Harper Row/Bluebird - In Batman and Robin Eternal, they became good friends, until Harper discovered that as a child assassin, Cassie killed Harper’s mom… She learned to forgive Cassie at the end of the series.

How to fit them into the story

Here are some suggestions for how this character could be brought into the story of Fallen Knight. Obvious, these are all just suggestions. Let us know if you have a different idea, we’d love to hear it :)

    • Comes back from Hong Kong (New Earth backstory) after hearing about Batman’s death.
    • Cassie never left Gotham, and was there when Batman and the Joker fell.
    • Cassie could be recently discovered by the Batfamily, who discover that she was being trained by Batman before his death (Prime Earth backstory).
