What about my question about the gun arm?  Annndd never thought of the bookish type.  That is one type of character I've used but never in a Final Fantasy setting.  I think I might have to do that.
Coming soon...

I would really like to see a completely bookish character.  I know a lot of students study and the like but for some reason a character that understands concepts better than execution.  Like a scholar type specialization: they would have a lot of the answers but be pretty 'useless' in battle.

ALSO- for anyone in need of a unique character idea I have several... particularly I've had the idea of a young student who THINKS (note, she would not actually be one in anyway) she's a sorceress.  She would be completely convinced she's a direct descendant of the line of innate magic users.  It could be played off as a joke where people are always laughing at her for it- or a more serious this is what she truly believes.  She could actually try and acquire a knight.

The list isn't completely up-to-date Manny :(  It's on my ta-do list

I was actually thinking the bookish type for my character. So I guess I was on something semi original lol. Thank you for your input :D

This is a really cool idea.  It's Don Quixote mixed with FF8.

To answer or clarify some of the questions that have been posted:

We could probably justify a character with a gunarm, as long as it's well-explained. Though I don't know if we're taking any firearm students at the moment, except maybe snipers/marksmen.

We sort of have a GF specialist PC (Gustave), though his combat style doesn't revolve around it. His limit break is basically a boost to his and an ally's summoning power, though.

Here's up-to-date lists of currently used specializations and weapons:

Grey Magic (Secondary White Magic)

Green Goo Theory

It was more gun arm (or the cybernetic limb) as a theme.  It doesn't have to be a transforming gun hand (since even in the original game it's strongly implied it transforms) but rather one of the melee weapons like the Atomic Scissors.  Or something modular as a tool with a techie character.

Sure, we can make that work. With all the technology we see from Esthar and the Gardens, a cybernetic limb wouldn't be a huge leap.

I'll direct this one to Fen, just because I'm not sure how that would work with the current magic system in this game.

Silk

If I recall Geomancers largely focus on terrain manipulation magic, so they would be more focused on attacking around the target than they would directly (example say if your on a hillside and use the magic to flood the enemy with dirt, or to turn the ground below them marshy to lower movement.)

Yep.  which I imagine would be immensely helpful in a combat situation.  ;D

Yeah I was wondering about that.  It is very specific to the battlefield.  Maybe it would be a specialization in one of the existing magics/wilderness survival and tie all of the spells into some sort of element

Maybe take a Limit Break that would react with the whatever battlefield the character is in.

My decision on this would be simple- the character would have an Environment-Target Magic type specialization.  He would know the exact same spells as other (probably Black Magic) users however he(or she, but I'll say he from now on) would simply not cast it at the enemy: he would cast it at the environment.  For example: for Silks specific ideas here how they would work.  Suggested flood the enemy with dirt: he would have no direct control of the dirt, he could cast an aero spell underneath the hillside to loosen the dirt to direct it towards the enemy.  To turn the ground below to make marshy: he would have no direct control of the environment he would just use the spells he had to effect the environment- he would cast a water spell to make dirt mud or the like...  Either way he would be stronger in Earth Magic specifically (since it directly effects the environment).  Does that make sense?  It's not exactly a Geomancer but a way to make the idea fit into the magical rules we currently have- because I'm uncomfortable with the idea of coming up with specific magic spells just for a new type of class ;D  I rather like the idea and would cause a player to think outside the box.

As far as a Limit Break goes- they get pretty far out there so I could easily see the limit break shifting depending on the battle field (and since we've allowed some bazaar things- it could be a 'made up' magic type spell)

I just want to point out that Aeris was technically a Geomancer.  It was all limit-based of course but they can exist in a non-job based system.

It's mostly about how magic works in the FFVIII universe, I think, where it's drawn from...the world, I suppose, and literally stocked up, making it so people can't really "create" spells that do unique things. The exception being sorceresses, who have much more freedom with magic.

Well, you can create magic, though?  IIRC, you could create draws from items.

I think that the Geomancer should be allowed to split Quake into Terra, Terrara, and Terraga.  Additionally, the effects from other spells ought to be earth-based rather than their elemental equivalents.  Like, fira would be lava coming from underground, and blizzard could be a geyser?  And shell and/or protect could be a wall made from earth.

Makes sense.  Theme the spell but it still has the same effect.
