Marguerite is new to town at the start of the game - I'm working out her introduction to Gomorra with Ciosa now, but she won't have many contacts or associations in town.

I plan on her staying at one of the nicer hotels when she arrives - but we'll see how all that works out.  To those that meet her - she's unbelievably lovely and of regal - almost noble - bearing.  She is quite capable of lifting her nose up with the most high-flautin'ist of them, but puts on those type of airs mostly to discourage advances from the more common type of man.  Her dress is of the best quality available in the west, and she told the hotel cleric she's in town to check on some investments.

Not a lot to go on, or much reason for anyone to hook into her as an acquaintance. I am sure she will be visiting all the local shops at some point, but I'm not exactly sure how long she'll have been in town when the game starts.  She will be a very recent arrival, but I dont' know if she's been in town closer to a day or a week.

Sloane has rooms to let if you want to stay in a PC run location ;).

Aiden

Marcus is in his early 30's (32), was born in town. Doesn't know his parents, was dumped in the orphanage and ran away when he was six.

He was gone for about 4-5 years, comes back when he is 10 to sell some beaver pelts at the trading post. Most likely didn't talk to anyone his own age, just did his business and left.

Over the following years, he came back and became known as a hunter/ skinner/ tracker.

Secretly he is a bounty hunter but does not advertise it. He will peruse the bounty board and keep an eye open for someone he can bring in for a couple of dollars. Around town he is known as an expert tracker/hunter (Sioux level tracking).

On occasion he will stay in town, but he rarely sticks around town, he is a "frontiersmen" at heart.

So if someone wants some rare pelts, like a California Grizzly, etc etc.Marcus is your man.

Sounds like Sloane could occasionally provide him with some work ;).

I have a question for Ciosa and Coffee:

How does the game-mechanics of character advancement work, or will we worry about that at all?
Specifically - if we gain 'experience' how is it spent? I imaging mostly on gaining and improving Aptitudes, but are traits immutable?

How about Hindrances and Edges?  Can you gain, modify, or lose them?

How would the following scenario play out with the game mechanics?
Belongings 4 is a saloon - suppose you have the best damned saloon west of Chicago, and is represents Belongings 5.
Okay - so it burns down.  If you have insurance, does your "Belongings 5" turn into "Dinero 5" from the insurance payout?
What if you don't have insurance, and the building and all your stock in it are a total loss - do you lose those 5 points of Edge, never to get them back?
Or perhaps you can only get them back though the game's "experience" system?

There will be progression in the game - I'm actually looking at a number of different methods of assessing 'Bounty' as experience is called.  There will be a flat amount for participation, but I'm looking at the prospect of also having a player vote system on a monthly basis where a well-played character or a lovely bit of drama could net the participants an extra reward.  This is still up for debate, and I'm planning to open the debate for players when I start the OOC thread tomorrow.  (Along with some other prospects.)

After gameplay starts, certain edges will become 'free' to gain in play, and 'free' to lose.  I'll have the bank offer an insurance system against theft or arson, but it will cut slightly into the profits of a business to take advantage of it, and repeated firebombings may raise a premium.  But in general, PCs will be able to acquire some of these advantages in game through a combination of roleplaying and background.  As an example - if a gunslinger stalks into town and gets a job protecting Sweetrock's mines (and lives through the month) he'll have the Dinero 1 or 2 advantages.  If a character manages to convince someone to sell a business and offers a price they find acceptable, they can gain the belonging.  Some edges are fixed - you can't acquire a mysterious destiny or an arcane background after game start.  (Unless the mysterious destiny is transformed into one.)

However, I am going to be fairly liberal on what can be bought - things like being level-headed could be available to a character who's survived several gunfights.  I strongly believe in character advancement matching role playing, though.

I'll be putting up explanations of the game's Help Wanted/Classifieds adventure system later, as details are hammered out.

In general, I don't intend to strip an advantage without an enormous cause in game, though.  That doesn't mean NPCs won't be interested in acquiring your character's belongings, or perhaps trying to set up a 'protection tax' on their income, however.  But these will be parts of the story, as greed is going to be a powerful motivator in the game.

I just wanted to drop in and add my two cents in all the planning as well.   :-)

Ginny's been living in Gomorra since she is five so she is a native here.  It is probably only in the past year or two has she been actually in Gomorra since most of her time before that was the Whateley Estate.

So potential connections, I can easily see/build upon.

Kokaine - Ginny and her have probably seen each other around in the saloons.  If she enjoys gambling, they have a played a few hands or so.

Kuroneko - As I stated before, I suspect Ginny's a regular patron to Mr. Sloane's casino/saloon.  She's a big spender so I imagine Mr. Sloane probably likes her somewhat, if for no other reason than she adds a lot to his bottom line every month.  We definitely should PM plot a bit if you want.  I feel that is probably the strongest connection there is so far just on the surface of what I know of everyone's character.

xSRx - If you are a regular of saloons, once again, I suspect Ginny watched her perform.  She might have gotten her a drink or something on one or her more memorable performances as a friendy hello.  They might have spoken as well--probably nothing more than gossip and whatnot.  My girl can be a bit of a chatterbox at times.

Phaia - Ginny will probably be by the apothecary just to prevent sunburn, if nothing else.  And she won't care that you make it for a dime and sell it for 50 cents.  If anything, she'll insist on having the absolute best cream for a whole dollar!  ;D

Those Whateleys--old rich they are.

Works for me.  Sloane!Muse says that sounds mututally beneficial - and profitable.  We should chat about what kind of table she wants to sponsor.

Traits are mutable and are capped at 5 (so any Trait under a 5 can be bought up with bounty).  Aptitudes are also purchasable but they cap at 10 (Please note that permission is required when going above a five and the bounty costs will change with purchasing above a 5).

She's a sharp gambler so I imagine she'll run some type of card table.  Most likely poker and a standard five-card draw since that seems to be the most common one featured in Westerns.  It's basically one the places she'll frequently and be there from the casino opening 'til the close, essentially drinking, gambling, and gossiping with whoever comes by.

Dhi

Onneca is very shy and has been immersed in her work for the last 3 years that she's been in Gomorra, in order to grow it to the success it is today. I believe she's good friends with Agatha and Elisabeth (and possibly anyone else who joins the Ladies of Science), but I don't imagine she knows very many of you just yet.

I am looking for a tailor, though- someone with less than 5 in Trade: Tailor but more than zero, to be Onneca's apprentice and employee. I guess you could also have max Tailoring skill but fake being bad at it for some reason. ???

I'm sure they do on occasion. ;)

Agatha could supply portable air move-inators for cooling off on a hot morning.

ladies i was think I could see having a table can some chairs out front the apothecary which happens to have a covered walkway...has that english feel...and the table and chair can always be moved inside if needed...we can also set pamplets out with new designs, drugs, devices etc

so if you ladies like ...say every tuesday around 9am...tea..coffee..bread and jam and honey...couple hours chatting about the new robards book...or some decive Agatha is working on...or working up a dress design and how much honey will be aviable??
