Celestial Goblin

Who here knows the Slayers! anime? Lina, Gourry, Zelgadis, Filia, Xellos, Naga...

Anyone up to play a game? Be it with the original characters or just a game with the same theme and in a similar world?

(Don't tell them about the salt mines, quiet Goblin)

Jefepato

Hell, I've got the Slayers d20 book back in my apartment.

MadPanda

Oh, heavens!  Twist my arm, why don'tcha?  ;D

What am I doing it for?

So, do we have three folks interested? Or did you just popped in to twist arms Hunter?

I can run it on d20 if you want, or I can use whatever else system appropriate for fantasy anime.

Hunter

I've seen the movie, though it's been a while.

I'm sure I could manage something.  ^_^

MadPanda

(pauses in his curbstomping)

Errr...I'd prefer something other than d20, if we could.  Wushu, perhaps...(laugh) Or even freeform (twitch).

And I promise not to play Naga the White Serpent.  I still have nightmares about that delta-formation of a dozen Nagas running along, laughing delightedly...

There exists no system nor ruleset to show how glorious and splendorous Naga the White Serpent is. I really believe that Naga's greatness and awesomness is even more immesurable than Lina's capability for mass destruction.
*nods*
I'd love to use WUSHU or Risus for this one. WUSHU would probably be better.

MadPanda

Need the link again?  ;D

And I think I'd better go borrow the DVD series from a friend again, to make sure I'm not too off-base...

I have no idea what either of those is.

MadPanda

Risus I know not, but here's the link to the Open/Reloaded version of Wushu.

http://wiki.saberpunk.net/Wushu/OpenReloaded

Two things to note: first, this is like the OGL or the dX version of Tri-stat in that it's the core concepts around which a game could be structured--it does not bring the 'cool' to the game all by itself.  Also, this is the 'reloaded' version.  It contains feedback from the surprisingly robust (and opinionated) online advocates for all things Wushu.

There might be a Slayers-ish write-up out there.  I'll have a look around.

Ugh.  It's a nice idea, but I don't like this system at all.

What about, say, Mutants & Masterminds?  Technically it's d20, but it's a lot more accessible than your standard class-based d20 game.

MadPanda

Errr...yuck.  Plus I don't have the resources to devote to Yet Another d20 knockoff.

I'll take a look at the Risus rules, then (they seem to be here: http://www222.pair.com/sjohn/risus.htm )...

MadPanda

I'll look over Risus, too, but my vote's probably still Wushu.

Ummm...what about dX rules?

The what now?

So far, I like Risus much, much more than Wushu.  Although I'm not sure how many points you'd need for a credible Slayers character...

MadPanda

And I must respectfully say I prefer Wushu on the basis of having more experience with it, although Risus is just about as quick and easy.  This is going to be a chocolate vs. vanilla disagreement, so there's an end to it.

dX refers to Tri-stat.  Uhm.  I'd rather not, thanks for the suggestion.  It works, but if we're going to have that kind of structure, I'd suggest RandomAnime instead (which has two flaws!  One, it ain't available for free, and two, it ain't easy to find!  Dagnabbed small press indie game).

Believe it or not, I'll work with any of the above.  :P

MadPanda

Oops!  Forgot a flaw.

RandomAnime, unlike BESM/Tri-stat, does not have a 'flaw' system!  So when playing poor Ranma-chan, you get no points back for that pesky Involuntary Physical Change issue.  Or the apparent inability to NOT gain another potential suitor every five minutes ('Girl Magnet').  Or the side effects of being raised on the road by the likes of Genma ('Poor Social Graces').

They worked in something like HERO's Limitations in Minionomicon, but it just ain't the same.

We all have to agree on a specific system before we beging, friends.
Myself I would be likely to vote for Risus first, Wushu second.
But I won't be insisting, I can tell my story in every system.

MadPanda

(sigh)

As I said, Wushu.  I could live with Risus, but I prefer Wushu.  I really don't like the death-spiral approach to conflict resolution in Risus.  I just don't.
