There are around 1,500 active volcanoes on Earth; about 50 of those will erupt in a given year.
Rarely will two erupt close to each other.
Even rarer is three erupting in proximity.

In December 2012, a string of four volcanoes erupted on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, along the northwest edge of the Ring of Fire. From what I understand, these eruptions are fissure eruptions, which have resulted in huge rivers of lava pouring from fissures in the Earth, but very little ash and debris released into the sky (this type would be opposite of the spewing-ash-and-fire-and-doom you generally see in apocalypse movies and such).

An aerial panorama team, Air Pano, took advantage of this opportunity to put together an interactive volcano panorama, that allows you to fly above the action from the comfort of your own home. The site also includes words from Stas Sedov, who participated in this adventure, along with some gorgeous photographs of the surrounds and some information about the volcanoes.

And then, finish off with a summary of 2012 in volcanic activity, accompanied by another slew of gorgeous photographic work.
