Port Grace is a mid-sized city, in southern Oregon state. Roughly 200,000 people live in the city and nearby area. Things haven't been going too well for the city, however. Growth stagnated in the 70s, and while it has picked up a bit recently, the city just hasn't quite ever recovered. Many areas are run-down; homelessness and unemployment are very common. Wilds dogs are common throughout the city. It's not a place that people dream of moving to. And that's just what you see in the daylight.

But a few, a very few, people know that there's something even worse about this place. In the shadows, things lurk, preying on the people who call this city home. Pulling their strings, and spreading their foul fingers into every space they can reach. Somebody needs to beat them back. To stand up for their fellow humans. Those who know, they can't just sit by and do nothing.

You can't just sit by and do nothing.

This is a game of Hunter: the Vigil, using the New World of Darkness system by White Wolf. Players will take the fight to the monsters, even if it seems absolutely overwhelming. This will primarily be a game about fighting back against the monsters hiding among humanity. It will be up to the players who, if anybody, to trust, and how they want to engage with various situations. While players will be free to deal with things as they see fit, I do have an overarching plot in mind. If the characters don't engage with it, it will proceed without their interference. That said, this isn't a railroad! The characters absolutely can (and I really hope they will!) change how things play out.

I'm looking for between 3 and 6 people to play in this game, who can make posts at least once every three days. Posting more frequently than that is absolutely fine. If, for some reason, you cannot post within three days, just let me know. If it happens several times, it will likely be an issue, but every once in a while is understandable. Players do not have to play a character of the same gender/sexuality as they themselves are in this game.

If you don't own the book, you can ask for help making a character. If you own the NWoD core book, the Hunter template isn't very difficult to add on to a base character. If you don't own the NWoD core book, somebody might be able to help you, but I'd ask that you really be interested. I've seen a lot of people who don't own the necessary books mention their interest, then vanish, and it looks like the audience for this is kind of small as-is.

Content-wise, this will be placed in NC-Exotic, in case of anything sexual happening with non-human characters. If there's anything in that umbrella that is uncomfortable for you, make sure it's in your O/Os and/or let me know. The game will be more focused on fighting back against monsters than anything else, but players are welcome to have their characters engage in activities with each other or NPCs.

If you would like to submit a character, I'll need this information:
Quick concept: [Something short, maybe a sentence or two at the most]
Age:
Gender:
Occupation: [No police or private detectives, no Special Forces]
Some backstory: [Not much here, a paragraph is okay, more is also okay]
First Encounter: [How did your character learn about the supernatural? And if it's not the same incident, why did they decide to fight back against it?]
Two people your character knows: [Anybody at all, make 'em up]
A place in town they like: [Make some place up. The city is decently-sized, you can fit just about whatever in here]

Once we have a couple-few of these, we can move on to actually making sheets. The characters will have to, some way or another, know each other. Not necessarily very well, or everybody knowing everybody, but there has to be some connection between all of them. Hunters don't generally just trust everybody they meet.

If you have questions, go ahead and ask away!

Original Post
I was wondering if there would be enough people interested in a game of Hunter to make it worthwhile pulling everything together. I've got a setting I've used before in a couple of games, one online and one in-person, a stagnant city on the west coast of the US. This woul be the standard NWoD core book with Hunter: the Vigil. I've got the GMC update somewhere on my machine, but I haven't really bothered reading through it, so I don't know it very well.

I'd be looking for between 3 and 6 players, who would be able to post at least once every three days or so. More frequently than that is completely fine, but any slower and things can really bog down.

Content-wise, the game would be more about violencing monsters and trying to avoid being violenced in return than about sexing. That said, if players want to get up to shenanigans, they're welcome to it, and if there's something that a player would love to have happen with/to their character, they would be welcome to ask, and see if it could be arranged. NPCs won't be sexless machines or anything like that, but they wouldn't all be raging nymphomaniacs, either. It would probably fall into NC: Exotic, just in case somebody wants something to happen with a monster of some sort.

Character-wise, I'd be looking for Tier 0 characters, those without any ties to organizations dedicated to Hunting. They would start off with little knowledge of the supernatural, and would have to learn as they go, however they can. Police characters, either ex or active, would not be accepted, nor would private investigators. Ex-military characters would be considered, but not special-forces types. Basically, looking for people closer to everyday folks, who don't have extremely powerful allies to bring in. I'd want characters with some history, who know at least a couple of people, so "Firefighter" or "loner orphan" are not acceptable character suggestions. Don't worry, I'm not the kind of GM who demands a family from every player, and then tortures and murders them.

Player-wise, I don't care at all about player/character gender/sexuality. If you'd want to play somebody of a different gender or sexuality, be my guest.

Full disclosure: I am going back to school for a quarter starting in late September. This might slow my posting down somewhat. Or not. I have no clue what the workload will look like. Also, I haven't run a game with much (read: more than a tiny, tiny bit) of sexual content, so I can make no promises for levels of sexiness if that does occur. If your games need to be hot as heck, I might not live up to that.

If this gets some interest, I'll see about switching it over to a recruitment thread. For now, if you're interested or have some questions, please feel free to ask away. I've got the next couple days off, so I should be able to answer fairly quickly.

I'd also be interested. :)

I have a mortal character perfect for Hunter in my request thread, they're a GMC character though easily adapted back to base nwod by giving them a Virtue and Vice, the Merits are pretty basic things and they don't have any starting xp over a basic character.  :-)

Well, that's three interested! I'll smash that first post into something useful, and we'll turn this into a recruitment thread.

Not sure if this concept would work? Let me know if you'd like to see changes, Kirby. I've only played Reckoning, but I've wanted to play Vigil for a while. (I do have the books for Vigil but haven't gotten to peruse them as much as I'd like):

~ Sun-hwa Lee ~

Quick concept: Newly-made widow and model out to make sense of the world

Age: 30

Gender: Cisfemale

Occupation: Lingerie model (only for smaller store outlets and online magazines)

Some backstory: She was born American and married young. Sun-hwa was always very attractive, and she chose to pursue modeling as a career, even though she understood that her parents had desperately wanted her to pursue work in a STEM field. But modeling was what she loved, even if she never really "made it big" like other models. She married the love of her life, Il-Sung, at age 18. Il-Sung Lee had immigrated over from South Korea; they'd met when she was 18. She was married to him for 12 wonderful years. Her in-laws, Il-Sung's family, never really liked her, and her family never really liked Il-Sung, but the two always made things work out. Sun-hwa made good money at her career even if she wasn't particularly famous, and Il-Sung worked as a software developer for a minor videogame company. They opted to not have children together, as each felt it would put undue relationship and financial strain on their marriage. In short? Sun-hwa's life and history is pretty normal. There's not much out of the ordinary about her past.

First Encounter: Ms. Lee's first encounter was also the encounter where she chose to fight back. She'd had a good life with her husband, Il-sung...until the night he showed himself to be Something Else. He wasn't always like that. But one night she woke up with him leaning over her bed, his skin unnaturally pale, his eyes intense. To her shock, her wrist was bleeding...Il-Sung had been drinking from her! That was when she understood him to be a monster who was just using her as food. She wasn't a wife to him anymore. She just barely managed to drive him out of the house (setting some things on fire accidentally in the process)...and to her shock, she found out later when the police came to her house that they said Il-Sung had died a bit ago (and dismissed her sighting of him as her mistaking a robber for her dead husband)...and that his body had gone missing from the morgue, which was why they'd waited over a week to tell her. Now Sun-hwa knows that monsters are real, and she doesn't want anyone to wake up seeing their loved one use them like food. She's only a model, though. She's financially pretty well-off, but combat? Yeah. Sun-hwa's got a lot to learn about things like that.

Two people your character knows:
Mr. Joseph Kitteridge - Her agent! Mr. Kitteridge is a slim man in his fifties with salt n' pepper hair, a quiet respectful demeanor, and a tongue that can spit out lies faster than a brain can process. He's good at landing people jobs and employement, and he's been her agent for five years now. Mr. Kitterridge is pretty strict about who he'll represent, and the events around Il-Sung's "death" left him worried for Sun-hwa's future.

Alice "Candy" LaCroix - Sun-hwa, a few months before she married Il-Sung, did a bit of private dancing. That's where she met Alice, stage name 'Candy,' and the two women forged a life-long friendship. Alice is a fiery red-head who is particularly passionate about volunteering at homeless shelters, and Sun-hwa feels that Alice has always brought out her better side. They usually meet on weekends to shop or play MMOs.

A place in town they like:
Port Grace Public Library - Sun-hwa is an avid reader. She frequently goes to the library to try to find good books that draw on inspiration from Asian mythology, because it makes her feel more connected with her roots. She also tends to spend long hours looking up new things and researching things. She's not an adept hand at research; she tends to ask the librarians for help a lot. It's a large library with brand-new computers for public use. The library is lucky that it received some funding from the city, so it's multiple stories and not as run-down as some places in the city...but as a result, it's heinously often overcrowded by others who want to spend time there.

That's great, Blythe! You also managed to include about four hooks I had planned, and I hadn't even mentioned them. So, uh, use those mind reading powers for good, please.  ;D

Jaded

Still a bit of a work in progress.

Quick concept: Amateur Driver
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Occupation: Delivery driver, part time racer.
Some backstory: Jessie grew up around cars.  Her father was a mechanic, her mother worked at a dealership.  She was driving long before she had a license, and was racing not long after.  A bit of an adrenaline junkie, Jessie took up street racing not long after her parent's divorce.

She moved out at eighteen, and got a delivery job with a local company.  It was far from her dream job, but it paid the bills, and kept her on the road and out of an office.

First Encounter: Jessie was doing a delivery to a remote farm a bit after sunset when she ran over what she thought, at the time, was a deer.  When she glanced in her mirror to see if anyone was coming, and instead saw a massive, bipedal, inhuman beast who was utterly unfazed by being hit be a van, she panicked.  She backed over it, then hit the gas.  She doesn't know if she killed it, though certainly there was nothing in the news.  But, at the very least, she got away.

Always the adrenaline junky, and insatiably curious, she couldn't stop herself from investigating further.  From prowling back roads at night, to looking for others who had seen such things.

Two people your character knows:
'Jimmy,' not his real name, owns and operates a mechanic's shop.  He's middle aged, not entirely trustworthy, and determined to get in Jessie's pants.  He is involved in the theft and sale of cars, and in the illegal street racing scene.  If you want something for your car, legal or not, he can probably hook you up.

Angie is Jessie's best friend.  A college student and overall good girl, she is exceptionally bright and does everything she can to follow the rules.  Still, the two hit it off rather well, and more often than not Jessie finds herself crashing on the couch of Angie's basement suite.

A place in town they like: 'The Strip' is a stretch of road in an industrial part of town.  The surrounding area is largely desolate, with few business still operating.  It is the perfect spot to race a car, and the nearby warehouses are the perfect spot to get together beforehand.

KirbysFolly

Looks good to me, Jaded! I figure we can wait a couple-few more days for more interest, then talk character sheets.

I've got my sheet more or less done, just considering backstory and the answers to your questions and such. It's the last two things really, so open, much choice! ^^

I'd be interested, as well, if there's room for one more. Let me know and I throw in my character sheet, asap.

Abraham Valentine
Quick concept: Former first mate on a Crab Fisher, up in Alaska.

Age: 43
Gender: male
Occupation: crab fisher

Some backstory: Growing up at his aunt and uncle's, Bram joined the family business at a young age. Fishing for crabs along the shores of Alaska sure was no walk in the park, but it was the only life the high school dropout could imagine. In the first five years of his career, he saw his uncle and two of his cousins die, but it wasn’t until a fateful affair with his late uncle’s second wife that future began to unravel. Shunned by his kin, he joined the crew of an old sea dog under whom he served as first mate up until recently.
The hardships of his jobs have made Abraham not only a hardy, but pragmatic man with a laconic sense of humor. He knows the value of hard, honest work and can’t bare sitting idle for long. Abraham is a self-educated man. He dropped out of high school and never went to college. His love for literature, a jealously guarded secret, is only rivaled by his interest in political philosophy. Abraham is a professed socialist.

First Encounter: An accident ended Brams career as a crab fisher and almost cost his life. Only few people know what really went down during that stormy night on the sea, and except Captain Halifax and Bram himself none are alive to tell the tale. None of the two can exactly recall the events, but they both agree that the bulky creature, covered with sea weeds, came right out of the ocean. There were teeth, and claws and a nauseating stench of dead fish, but it was the malicious intelligence in the creature’s eyes that still haunts Brams dream.
When a flare, fired in the creature's maw by the captain, forced it back into the lightless depth of the Bering Sea, Bram laid on the deck, broken and battered. Two of his crew mates hadn’t been so lucky. Torn to pieces by teeth and claws they were claimed by the roaring ocean.
Recovering from his wounds, Bram tried to learn as much about the creatures as he possibly could. It wasn’t much and hardly satisfying and only one thing became obvious: this beast was only one among many. More were out there, haunting the night. And not all of them were as far away as the thing he had encountered out on the sea.

Two people your character knows:
Capt’n Halifax: Bram's old captain. He rarely visits Port Grace, but trusts his former first mate to look after his affairs, personal and on a matter of business. He, too, has witnessed the the creature that attacked Bram, but he might know more than he let's on.
Red: A teenage run-away girl who lives in the streets of Port Grace and uses the Halifax Warehouse as shelter, from time to time. She makes a living by selling dope and knows the underbelly of the city like few others do. Bram sometimes helps her out and sees himself as the her protector.

A place in town they like: The Old Halifax Storehouse; old warehouse by the harbor, belonging to Captain Halifax. A relic from the time of Port Grace’s founding, the old two-story building seems somewhat out of place. Bare of most commodities of modern life and conveniently close to a gloomy, little tavern it has become Bram’s favored haven

Character Sheet (preliminary)

KirbysFolly

Definitely, Gamble. Go ahead and make up an application, I put the stuff I was looking for in the first post, near the bottom.

wander: don't stress it too much, there's only 38 wrong answers!

KirbysFolly

Oh man, Gamble, I'm sorry I left you hanging there! I didn't get a notification that you had updated your post, like I sometimes do (I think. Or I'm totally mad). That looks great!

I like the three character ideas submitted so far! I don't see anything that stands out as needing changes from there. Let's go ahead and get character sheets started up in here, and we can move things over to an OOC thread sometime soon when I'm more sober. In the meantime, if anybody wants to discuss character links, they can start in here if they'd like.

For character building, follow the standard character creation rules. You can exchange Morality for XP per RAW. Just make sure not to pick any Compacts or Conspiracies. To share them, you can post them up in here, or link to a sheet else-net. I like Myth-Weavers myself, but you are totally free to use whatever you like.

If anybody else out there still wants to apply, feel free. I won't close things up yet.

It might be a day before I get Sun-hwa's stats up, but I'll work on them!  :-)

Are there any particular Merits you'd like us to consider or avoid?

Oh, I did forget to mention, keep Occult below 2. These characters are new to this, so they shouldn't know much about all this to start with. :-)

Newcomers: Hiya! Feel totally free to drop an application if you're interested in playing!

You can buy them at drivethrurpg I think, not sure where else to get them.

Is that gonna be the primary resource for this? Any others we should consider looking at?

I'll take a look at it once I get home!

NWoD didn't have the Player's Handbook, and GM guide divide that D&D has. It has a general rules and settings/specific rules split.

The main book, sometimes called the core books, just called World of Darkness. It has a blue cover, with shadowy human figures on it. It only has generic setting advice, not a specific setting, and includes the base rules. I'd recommend this book at a minimum.

The setting book is Hunter: the Vigil. It contains specific setting information, and rules specifically for playing as Hunters, those who fight back against monsters in some way. I'd suggest having this one as well, but it can be done without, if somebody can give you details about the specific rules.

Any actual in-game location stuff would only be in the threads, this isn't a published adventure or anything.

Tyson "Ty-Dy" Briggs

Quick concept: Charisma: The Cost of the Kiss
Age: 21
Gender: M
Occupation: Nightclub Promoter/Social Media Wiz
Some backstory: Originally a pencil-necked geek who was the typical target of torment around his school. He loved music, but was always ahead of the curb with trends. Couldn't get a hello, let alone get a date or laid. Until one interesting encounter with with a sultry young lady... (see below.) This event apparently kickstarted puberty or something, because he grew bigger, more fit and less sickly, as well as surprisingly charismatic, saving him from the ass-kickings he was accustom to, and the ladies that he weren't. His charisma and trendiness got him a job at an upstart nightclub, which he helped build to a premier performance venue. His bosses gave him the opportunity to be one of the promoters for their now-third venue,"Beacon," a smaller but cutting-edge club and lounge, currently being designed with some of his input.
This charisma, while comes 'natural," feels so foreign to him even now, but more importantly, is slowly eating away at his ability to control his carnal desires, particularly lust and wrath. Having a few supernatural experiences now, he hopes to rid himself of this darkness growing in the back of his mind.
First Encounter: He has had only two run-ins with the unknown, both related incidents. The day he lost his virginity: He had seen a young lady, who looked ragged, clothes ripped and wet from rain. He felt drawn to her, and offered his grey trench coat and to take her to her home...on his bicycle... Arriving at the apartment, she offered for him to come in, as she headed to her room to clean herself up. And she cleaned up rather..."nicely..." as a buxom redhead approached him in lingerie with an offer, "You know, if you spend the night, I can teach you a few things..." He couldn't tell if it was her sugary words or his active libido that compelled his to stay, but he damn sure did; hell, wouldn't you? Once he woke the next morning, she was already gone to...somewhere, but she left a card on the dresser. It had no name but some sort of symbol or crest and beside it the words, "Don't worry, I can find you when I need to..." along with a winky face drawn on it...
5 years later, 6 months prior to today's date: Spending his average night at the main club, trying to wash away dark thoughts with some mojitos, a familiar lady walks in, wearing an extremely familiar grey coat. Tyson chatted with her briefly, but she quickly offered to take him out for a late-night meal. He reluctantly declined, as he had to manage things at the club. She winked and said "your loss," and walked out of the building, leaving a similar card in his pocket. After about 90 seconds of reconsidering, Ty ran out of the club, chasing the lady down, to see her mawing down on some random guy's neck. She sure works quickly, and it was strange that his neck is smeared with red even though her lipstick was purple... She seems to be sucking him dry, almost as if... his life-force was leaving...his body... Ty took two hesitant steps forward, attracting her attention, who only looked slyly at him, throwing the now lifeless body onto the ground. She step coyly around an alley's corner and seemed to have vanished, saying "It seems you have done well with my gift..." Briggs, still being a squeaky-clean nerd at heart, reported this to the police, who obviously didn't believe the words of some drunken club-hopper. Who is she? What is she? The only lead he had to any of this was a card with a distinct symbol on it...
Two people your character knows:
"Magic" Mike Saunders: Brigg's superior in the nightclub business. General Manager of "Magic Productions," owner of "Panorama" performance venue and clubs "Trouble" and upcoming "Beacon," various strip clubs, including chain "Candy Bar." Pretty laid back, as money pretty much makes itself in his line of work. He has looked over Briggs and has gotten him to loosen up, a lot. He sees the "kid" as a potential successor, not quick to give him the Golden Ticket, but passes some perks his way as it suits him. He appreciates the hard work Ty puts in, and appreciates the superstar DJs and regional celeb-utants he brings in more.
Gretchen "Alyson Glitter" Allison: 2yr Stripper at one of the "Candy Bar" locations. Hates her real first name, and few people know it, Tyson being one of them, as she is to be in charge of Go-Go dancers and other entertainers at the upcoming "Beacon." All about order and time, she is a tad strict in terms of getting her business deals complete, often butting heads with Ty's more relaxed nature. Outside of work, they get along well enough. Neither have pursued each other romantically or intimately, but both of them would hit that if the opportunity arose.
A place in town they like: "Beacon" Premier Nightclub and Lounge: Under Construction. The town that the club Panorama is located near is about 1 hour away from the setting, and somehow has become a small boom town BECAUSE of the clubs and performance venues. This club is instead about 20 mins from the heart, refurbishing an factory into a restaurant and club.
