Council of Dreams: A Freeform Mage The Awakening Based Game

This game is open to players of all sexes, genders and sexualities, playing characters of all sexes, genders and sexualities with no obligation to play your own.
It is based on the new World of Darkness game Mage: The Awakening but prior knowledge of this game is not assumed and this will be a freeform rather than a system game.

Modern Day Magic

The world appears the same as ours, but magic and the supernatural are hidden behind the regular facts of everyday life unable to be seen by most. A few people, otherwise ordinary everyday folk manage that strange shift of perspective it takes to notice the magic and see that it's everywhere. Once you've discovered magic and become a mage it's hard to go back to ordinary life, knowing that there are secrets, dangers and power out there waiting to be found. Some mages live a double life, one foot in the real world and the other in the strange world of the supernatural. Others give up on the ordinary completely and focus their entire lives on magic.

Regardless of the approach they pick, mages have secrets that they can't share with the ordinary world and to stay sane they need to talk to other people who can understand why you don't want to walk past that strange alleyway at 13 minutes past the hour or why you avoid that neighbour who stays in the house all day and people only see at night. That's where the Consillium comes in, a meeting place for the mages of a city to talk to one another, trade their strange mystical secrets, date someone who doesn't think you're crazy or just play group politics with the other people of real power.

What's the game about?

Your character is a mage, an otherwise ordinary human being who has learned that magic exists and started learning how to use it to cast spells and change the world around them.

The game focuses on your interactions with the other mages living in the city of San Francisco, particularly through the Consillium a regular meeting place for all mages.

There will be player based storylines where you interact with the other mages, including the possibility for hookups and adult interaction but also the politics of power and wrangling for a position on the high council, perhaps even becoming the Hierophant who is considered in some ways the ruler of all the mages in the city.

There will also be GM based storylines where you interact with events going on in the city, having the possibility of investigating supernatural occurrences and working to defend your fellow mages from the threats that are out there hunting for you.

How do we play it as a freeform game?

Assuming there is sufficient interest for this game to be run I will be writing up a vastly simplified explanation of how magic works and it will be played much more loosely, trying to capture the feel of the original game but without worrying too much about the nitty-gritty details. For action scenes or times when the players can't decide between themselves how to resolve an event, any conflicts will be decided by GM adjudication.

What if I don't know anything about mage?

That's perfectly fine. This setting will be based on mage, but again playing much more loosely so that people can interact with it without needing to read a whole bunch of books. I will be posting a lot of world details in a simplified form that people can work with and available to answer any questions. People are free to make up their own minor details as well, without needing to strictly worry if it adheres to cannon.

What's the plan?

First of all, seeing if there's enough interest to run this game. If there is, I will post enough information for people to start making characters and start accepting applications for particular character concepts. Once that's done the game will be played on the forums, it will be posted within the extreme small groups to arrange for a wide range of acceptable content and players will use posting tags and warnings to let people know about more extreme content within the individual posts.

Originally players will not be able to play the Hierophant, as they will be an NPC character. However the early events of the game will focus on the death of the Hierophant, allowing the players to attempt to gain this position in game. This will be one of the earliest major plotlines of the game.

How frequently do I need to post?

Action based scenes (which will be optional to get involved in) will require more frequent posting and will need to be able to be posted in within 2 days, otherwise your action will be assumed by the GM.

Roleplaying based scenes will be handled freeform and not require any specific posting schedule, however please consider the fellow players involved in the scene.

People will be able to be in multiple scenes, so long as their character isn't in two places at once (unless they use magic to do this), with each scene being tagged with the time and location that it's happening at.
My home is not a place, it is people.

Paths

Each mage experiences their own personal vision of the magical world that shapes what kind of magic they can do. There are five different paths which mages can walk. This is not a choice the mage makes themselves, but something decided by their own inner nature.

AcanthusMastigosThyrsusMorosOubrimos
Mages who see a vision of Arcadia, the faerie world built of stories and outside of time.Mages who see a vision of Pandemonium, a strange hellish world where torment is used but in order to heal broken souls.Mages who see a vision of The Primal Wilds, a shamanistic world of spirits and pure life energy.Mages who see a vision of Stygia, the underworld of death and wealth.Mages who see a vision of The Aether, a seemingly heavenly world of raw energy and magical power.
Fate Magic
The power over luck and probability allows an Acanthus to make events work out well for their friends, while placing curses upon their enemies. It also allows them to perceive the mysterious forces of destiny at work within the world.
Time Magic
The power over time itself allows the Acanthus to see the future and the past, while true time-travel is impossible the flow of time can be altered to fit days of work into a single hour, or to make an entire day pass in the blink of an eye.
Mind Magic
The power over the mind of humans and other intelligent beings allows a Mastigos to be charming or terrifying, manipulating memories, thoughts and emotions magically.
Space Magic
The power over space allows a Mastigos to see distant events, move objects or people from one place to another and to see the invisible links between people and the things they most care about.
Spirit Magic
The power over the spirit world allows a Thyrsus to see spirits that move about in the world, exorcise them from those who are possessed or even cross the boundary between worlds into their own separate realm
Life Magic
The power of life allows a Thyrsus to both heal and harm living creatures but also to change them or make them faster or stronger.
Death Magic
The power over death allows a Moros to control decay, crumbling objects to ash or manipulating shadows. They can also perceive ghosts that still linger in the world and can communicate with them eventually controlling or shaping them.
Matter Magic
The power over solid matter allows a Moros to transform objects like the alchemists of old, reshaping physical matter however they wish and strengthening or repairing objects.
Prime Magic
The power over the energy of magic itself allows an Oubrimos to counter and destroy the magic of others, to save up magical energy to enhance spells and to manipulate the workings of existing magics.
Forces Magic
The power over all types of energy allows an Oubrimos to bend light, movement and heat to their will using lightning to strike down their enemies or shaping the weather itself.

Orders

Mages have cliques just like everybody else, and while it may not have anything to do with their powers or magic, it's an important part of mage society to know what group you hang out with.

Silver Ladder
The power players and politicians of the magical world. They try to keep principles of law and order intact so that you don't just have hundreds of powerful mages all running about doing their own thing. Sometimes people find them overbearing or controlling but without them the Consillium probably would have fallen into complete chaos a long time ago.
Mysterium
Some people value magic for its own sake, rather than what it can be used for and they tend to collect together within the Mysterium. They practice secret rituals and initiations to celebrate magic itself and gather whatever knowledge they can find. Sometimes seen as the geeks and nerds of the magical world, their knowledge is often the most extensive however.
Guardians of the Veil
A group dedicated to keeping magic secret and safe, they try to police responsible use of magic amongst other mages. While sometimes people see them as taking away the fun of magic they do it working for the benefit of all mages.
Adamantine Arrows
Some people like a good challenge and a fight. The adamantine arrows take up the fight to defend mages against their enemies and sometimes to protect the regular humans from the dangers of the supernatural world. While sometimes people see them as violent thugs, they devote themselves to the safety of others.
Free Council
Not everyone is a joiner and there have always been independent mages out there just trying to get by. With how dangerous the world is though, they've started to come together and work as a group of individuals. They're often the most innovative of mages and challenge the old traditions, however they're barely even recognized as a group at times.

Magical Knowledge

It takes time, practice and discovering secrets to increase your power with magic. Your character will begin with a certain level of knowledge and power that you choose. This applies across all types of magic that your path gives you.

Apprentice: An apprentice mage is only just beginning to learn. They know three types of spells they can cast:

Compelling
Compelling magics, which are almost always covert in their Aspect, can actually be a bit tricky to categorize at times. In general, if a given effect subtly influences a simple phenomenon without harming it, granting it the ability to directly cause harm, or fundamentally altering its nature, then the effect is quite probably a Compelling effect. Such spells can almost always be written off as natural or probable by a Sleeper, even if the spells’ effects are directly witnessed: the room seems darker and spookier than it should, but (probably) not unnaturally so, or the guy behind the desk just seems to have a natural knack for multitasking and so on. Overall, spells of the Practice of Compelling are the most surreptitious of the magics used to directly affect the world, interacting with its people, places and things through the use of the Arcana alone.
Knowing
Knowing magics reveal subtler information than those found within the Practice of Unveiling. While Unveiling imparts sensory knowledge, Knowing allows a willworker to delve into the lore of the Mysteries. By casting magics of the Practice of Knowing, a willworker can discern the health of a human soul, detect the presence of conscious thought or even learn the qualities of an unknown relic of sorcerous power. Such spells not only answer questions for the Awakened, but also help them to discover the right questions to ask. Such magics are equally useful to spies, investigators, socialites and warriors, bestowing awareness beyond the ken of ordinary thought. An important detail to note is that Knowing magics specifically do not bestow sensory information upon the mage. The Practice of Knowing deals in facts, not the senses. A mage who casts a Knowing spell simply acquires knowledge thereby, rather than perceiving phenomena that must then be analyzed. A mage doesn’t always understand what Knowing spells help her to learn, but she receives the information directly, without the need for interpretation. What she makes of that knowledge, however, is up to her.
Unveiling
Unveiling, almost always of covert Aspect, is one of the simplest classifications for new spells. If a mystic effect imparts sensory perception of the phenomenon in question to the mage, then it is an Unveiling effect. These magics include the revelation of Resonance, the ability to communicate directly with otherworldly beings and the like. Some Unveiling effects can be scaled up to Initiate level, allowing them to be cast upon others.
Given the fact that Unveiling magics reveal Resonance to mages, the spells of this Practice are probably some of the most useful in any mage’s repertoire. The importance of being able to perceive Resonance cannot be overstated. Such a sense enables a mage to detect the passing of other willworkers, to learn the specific “signature” of a spell and to otherwise discern the presence of otherworldly phenomena (or even just exceptional occurrences of mundane ones). And, as each Arcanum’s Mage Sight imparts a different sense for Resonance, there is a reason to learn each of them.

Initiate: An initiate mage has started to be able to cast spells of more power. They learn three more types of spells they can cast.

Ruling
Ruling magics are typically elementary manipulations that do not necessarily stray into the realm of obvious magic. Even the vulgar effects within the Practice of Ruling can usually be readily concealed from Sleepers, even when cast in their presence. (Provided, of course, that the casting willworker is able to exercise a bit of forethought and restraint.) With Ruling spells, a mage can accomplish basic feats that fall under the purview of an Arcanum: subtly sculpting basic forms of energy, imparting a few quick telepathic words of warning, nudging probability a few degrees in a desired direction. While a few Ruling spells create somewhat grander effects, these are the exception, rather than the rule.
Shielding
The Practice of Shielding, which is almost always covert in its Aspect, is also quite simple and straightforward. If a magical effect protects the character, then the spell belongs to the Practice of Shielding. As a Disciple spell, a Shielding effect can be cast upon another target. Any mage who engages in combat on a regular basis (or who, because of position or even just paranoia, fears being attacked) has a use for Shielding spells. In fact, it’s doubtful that the Adamantine Arrow as an order could have survived to the modern day without the existence of the Practice of Shielding. Some of the most treasured of Artifacts and Imbued Items are enchanted with Shielding magics. Quite simply, no willworker with an ounce of good sense turns up her nose at the idea of a little extra protection.
Veiling
Veiling effects conceal the phenomena encompassed by a given Arcanum, or use such phenomena to grant camouflage or concealment. At this level, the mage’s scope of effect is small and/or otherwise limited. In general, the larger or more complex the creature, place or thing to be affected, the more knowledge the mage needs in the appropriate Arcanum. In other words, it’s usually harder to cast Veiling spells on a moving car than on a stationary chair, and easier to cast them on a houseplant than on a human being.

Disciple: A disciple mage has started to learn dangerous magic. Another three types of spell become available.

Fraying
The Practice of Fraying is where the offensive magics truly begin. While some lesser hurts can be caused by magic before this point, Fraying is the least refined Practice almost wholly dedicated to the art of destruction. When used to directly inflict harm, Fraying spells more easily inflict minor injuries and are more likely to overwhelm and hurt than kill. (Indirect harm, however, can come in other forms; a mage using a Fraying effect to erode the welds holding part of a large jagged metal sculpture together, dropping it into the head of an attacker, will likely cause lethal damage, instead.) Of course, Fraying magics need not directly hurt anyone or anything. They can also be used to damage less tangible things (such as by hindering a subject’s chances of success at an endeavor or dissolving magical energy).
Perfecting
Perfecting effects are used in the process of refinement and, often, of mending. Essentially, spells intended to make a thing better (whether in terms of improving functionality or in terms of repair)usually belong to the Practice of Perfecting. While some Perfecting spells restore health (whether to corporeal entities or those of a more ephemeral nature), others mend broken objects, and still others expand upon the natural capabilities of creatures or things. In some respects, Perfecting magic is the opposite of that learned within the Practice of Fraying.
Weaving
The Practice of Weaving tends to be the catchall for third-dot effects that don’t fit into either Fraying or Perfecting, or a more advanced application of a lower-dot Practice. In terms of mechanics, spells that alter capabilities or somehow otherwise change the function of a thing without fundamentally transforming the nature of that thing are Weaving spells. This is a broad definition, and can be a bit hard to adequately categorize, since there are so many things that Weaving effects can conceivably do.

Adept: An adept mage has an almost complete understanding of a type of magic. They learn two more types of spells.

Patterning
Patterning is probably the most versatile of all of the 13 Practices. The effects of Patterning span a broad scope of possibilities. Patterning magics run the gamut: if a spell doesn’t create, destroy
or influence a phenomenon, then the spell is probably a Patterning effect. Patterning spells can alter phenomena between roughly related types, or redefine the parameters of said phenomena, sometime even into configurations not normally found within the Fallen World. Memories can be altered, inert materials changed in shape or quality or the flow of time itself made to skip forward suddenly or to cling to an individual, causing her to temporarily “lag” behind its normal flow. Such spells represent the greatest possible degree of facility in manipulating objects, entities or other phenomena without actually being able to create such things out of nothingness, or to reduce them to the same.
Unraveling
Unraveling magic is more than merely destructive — that is the province of the Practice of Fraying. What Fraying does with a blunt instrument, Unraveling does with a scalpel. Unraveling can work on a finer scale, creating nuanced forms of harm that don’t necessarily rely purely upon pure stopping power. Unraveling spells can hurt the knowledge or ability of others, or the capacity of a phenomenon, as well as simply inflict damage.

Master: A master mage has complete knowledge of a type of magic. They learn the final two types of spells.

Making
Spells from the Practice of Making give a willworker nearly godlike power. Such mages can craft phenomena out of nothing, and can generate things that otherwise cannot exist within the
rude confines of the Fallen World. Few Awakened in this age manage to attain this degree of knowledge and comprehension for any Arcanum.
Unmaking
Spells from the Practice of Unmaking are terrifying to behold. They eradicate matter, dissolve flesh and rend asunder the very threads of space and time. More destructive in a way than even the most powerful nuclear bomb, Unmaking effects cause things to completely cease to exist.

Note to people who have played the original game: Don't worry too much about the exact ratings for spells from the original game, we'll just go with the simplified ideas from above.

A short history of the setting

Mages have always been around, those people who know a little more than they should and seem to be able to do things that no one else can. However a long while back (no one really knows the exact details, doesn't stop them arguing though), a lot of mages all gathered together in the city of Atlantis and worked together sharing and swapping their information. With the combined magical knowledge they figured something out, there was a way to make mages into gods. They decided "what could possibly go wrong" and built something called the celestial ladder to make this happen. Unfortunately the first people to use it said "wait, why should we share this with everyone else" and blew the island of Atlantis up, trying to hoard all the magic of the world to themselves. The survivors scattered across the world and taught their secrets of magic down through the generations, creating a common background to all magic practiced everywhere in the world.

At least that's what the legends say.

How magic works
Most of the time, you'll be expected to just describe your own magic and choose what sort of consequences and effects are appropriate. If you're using magic against another player's character try to agree with them OOC on what sort of result should occur. If you're ever unsure or unable to reach a decision with the other player just contact me and I can approve any effect. This isn't a game about god-modding, and you should use magic as appropriate to add to everyone's experience of the story.

Magic doesn't work well in front of normals: Having magic lets you do some awesome things, but unfortunately it only works well in secret. When mortals are watching you, you can usually only do subtle magic that they won't notice or will just pass off as a weird coincidence. This is called disbelief. You can use more obvious magic in front of ordinary people, however the effect will be much weaker and require everything you can muster to make it work. It also gives you much nastier consequences. Finally most people have a natural subconscious tendency to explain way what they can and forget everything else. Active spells slowly begin to fail if they're witnessed by an ordinary person.
Powerful magic has bad consequences: When you push magic too far and try to change things too much, reality pushes back and inflicts bad consequences on you. This might range from a nasty headache for something small all the way to summoning a demon to torment you for much more powerful magics. This is called paradox. Fortunately there's a way around this, if you cast spells in a place of magical power there's no limit to how much magic you can use and you won't suffer from any paradox. If you construct a tool of some sort to help wield your magic (wands, coins, cups and blades are very common, but it can be anything appropriate to your character) then the effect of paradox is slightly less.
There are magic words: Mages who join one of the five orders get taught Atlantean, the old magical language used on Atlantis. No one speaks enough of it to hold a conversation anymore, but a few words of power can make spells stronger. Normal people can't learn Atlantean but they always recognize it as sounding strange and mystical.
Magic works at a distance: You can even cast spells on people or objects that are in distant places, however you need a magical link between you to do this. Knowing a person's true name (what they were named by their parents at birth) or having something that comes from their body (such as hair, blood, fingernails) is always enough unless they're behind a magical ward. If you don't have either of the above you need any two of: An accurate picture, An object that's important to them, Strong shared emotions between you or knowing where they are currently. This is called Sympathetic Magic. It's always harder to cast and is more likely to cause paradox, even if the effect is relatively subtle.

A simple guide to the enemies of mages

Seers of the Throne: This group of people try to follow in the footsteps of those first Atlantean mages who became gods and tried to control all magic themselves. Some say they worship those gods. They try to make sure there are no other mages in the world. Very organized and there are perhaps as many of them out there as there are of the five orders of mages.
The Scelesti: A cult of mages who worship strange and dark beings from beyond reality.
Banishers: Mages who can't handle the existence of magic, they believe that all magic is evil and try to hunt down other mages.
The Mad: Individual mages whose minds have snapped so badly that they don't even recognize reality anymore. Unfortunately their magic lets their insanity leak out into the world twisting and corrupting it to support their delusions.
Reapers: Mages who are so desperate for immortality that they gain it by eating people's souls. The problem is that they need to keep doing it just to stay alive, and normal people's souls just aren't as nourishing as another mage's soul.

Awesome, thankyou for your interest so far.

I've put a bit more information up above in the worldbuilding/character creation section as well which should show how I'm working with simplifying the rules and setting a bit.

Is it a hard rule that vulgar magic cannot risk disbelief at all? IE, no just eating the Paradox and accepting damage to your Pattern?

Interest in a third-Arcanum-is-Mind Acanthus of the Silver Ladder.

As a possible resource for folks with an interest, here's the game's complete list of spells in referential form - the short descriptions give you a somewhat better idea of what kind of things fall where in terms of Arcanum and rating. Note that the rote pools are optional even in the system game; they represent particular ways mages commonly think about their magic (IE, damaging the mind being related to aggressive social interaction or working with magical constructs being similar to working with every day tools) rather than absolute cases. Having a frame like that in the system game makes your magic more precise and effective, but most people only have a handful of spells at that level of practice and cast all the rest "improvised."

This looks interesting. I only have experience with Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse, but I love World Of Darkness settings.

Expressing interest.  Very tentatively; Moros (matter) of the Free Council.

Maybe I better lay a claim to an Obrimos Mysterium while people are still deciding.

If we want to give simplify the system, I would personally recommend giving everyone two or three arcana, with no more than one arcanum being outside the path forte.

I was thinking much of the same thing as Andy or Mr. Alan.

Tentatively thinking of maybe going down the path of Moros or Oubrimo, but under the Order of the Adamantine Arrows.

Looks like this is attracting enough interest to start organizing it. I'm going to get some character creation guidelines all set together, finalize some of the rules and allow people to start creating their characters. I'll also write up some of the NPCs.

I'm also going to allow people to play sleepwalkers as well (for those of you not familiar with mage, they're ordinary people who know magic exists but can't use it. I'll write up more of a description in the character creation stuff). They're usually hired as assistants to mages since they can watch them doing magic without causing any problems and are allowed to know the secret.

People are going to be able to have multiple characters, although for power balance I think I'll limit it to one 'powerful mage' (Adept or Master) and then the others should be less experienced mages or sleepwalkers.

Quote from: Rajah on September 28, 2014, 06:40:12 PMIs it a hard rule that vulgar magic cannot risk disbelief at all? IE, no just eating the Paradox and accepting damage to your Pattern?

If you don't know mage the following spoiler isn't necessary to read and will just look confusing. Anything you need to know will be explained in much simpler terms

I'll need to consider this. Mages being able to use vulgar with witnesses magic is part of what makes it an effort to maintain secrecy. However for a freeform game with no rules or dice, it's difficult to come up with a simple way of duplicating: [roll gnosis+sphere, roll paradox at +2, determine paradox effect, roll composure+resolve for sleeper witnesses for disbelief, etc.] and make that into a simple on the fly system. I'll try to find a way of duplicating this without requiring all those rules.

QuoteInterest in a third-Arcanum-is-Mind Acanthus of the Silver Ladder.

In the interests of keeping things simple, I might just be restricting people to the magic of their path as having ratings in individual arcanum would vastly complicate this beyond an easy entry-level. However people could have a legacy power that does different things if they need more options.

QuoteAs a possible resource for folks with an interest, here's the game's complete list of spells in referential form - the short descriptions give you a somewhat better idea of what kind of things fall where in terms of Arcanum and rating.

Yeah, this level of detail is way too high. It's fine for inspiring ideas, but people are going to be able to be a lot more freeform in their magic and it's fine if they "get it wrong" by official guidelines. I'm going to write out the 13 practices instead and people are fine as long as they stick to Arcanum+Practice when deciding the spells they cast. Also not bothering with the differences between rote+improvised.

Hmm. I loved Ascension, but never really looked into Awakening. Since this is a simplified freeform, I might make a character for it anyway. How established are those Paths and are there any alternate ones? I used to have a character who was big into Matter-sphere magic, but I'm not sure I like death-themes along with that.

Spheres and Arcana are exceptionally similar (other than Death, Fate and Spirit instead of just Entropy and Spirit), and there's Paradox, but that's where the simiarities end.  Traditions were always a more voluntary thing and way to express yourself and find like-minded people, but Paths are hardwired into the magic.  In many senses, you're drawing power from another dimension instead of playing with consensual reality.

Quote from: VonDoom on September 29, 2014, 10:57:23 AMHmm. I loved Ascension, but never really looked into Awakening.

I was a big fan of Ascension and to be perfectly honest, hated Awakening at first glance because on the surface it looked very different. It wasn't until I played in a game of Awakening that I started to appreciate it and it does have a lot of the same enjoyment that Ascension had.

However playing Ascension will give you a huge advantage to understanding the magic in Awakening.

Key differences:
Paradox happens straight away, rather than building up over time.
You don't have individual paradigms for your magic, everyone's magic works the same way.
Entropy is split up into Death and Fate rather than being just one sphere.

QuoteSince this is a simplified freeform, I might make a character for it anyway. How established are those Paths and are there any alternate ones? I used to have a character who was big into Matter-sphere magic, but I'm not sure I like death-themes along with that.

In the system game, they just have a lower XP cost and you don't need to spend a point of mana (quintessence) to cast improvised spells in them. You can still learn any sort of magic the ones from your path are just the easiest. The orders are more like the traditions from Ascension, whereas the paths are more like vampire clans in masquerade. I'm not worrying about the difference between rotes and improvised spells, since it's a bit too complicated for a simpler freeform game so this won't be relevant.

What I'm thinking of doing, to open options up to people a little more is to allow characters to choose one of three options.

1) Your character is a more experienced mage but split their training into a lot of different fields. They know both styles of magic from their path and a third style as well. However they have to start at Disciple level or lower since they've focused on broad training rather than a specific field.
2) Your character remained focused on their path. They know both styles of magic from their path and no others. Can start at any level of power.
3) Your character split their focus between their path and something else. They know one of the styles of magic from their path and one style from any other path. Can start at any level of power.

This looks interesting. I only have experience with Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse, but I love World Of Darkness settings.

You should be fine. Some of the specifics of how vampires and werewolves work is a little bit different in the new World of Darkness settings, but since it's focusing on mages it would be an outside view of them anyway.

Quote from: AndyZ on September 29, 2014, 10:52:05 AMI should also probly ask just how strict our GoV is going to be.

Partly depends on the players who are Guardians of the Veil of course, generally I prefer them to not be too fanatical myself and that's likely to be the attitude of the NPC Hierophant (until he dies) about keeping magic secret, but it'll be partly down to whoever chooses to play them how strict their characters are.

The question was really directed to the player ^_^ An Obrimos can be pretty flashy, and I've been in games where the GoV get upset if you use vulgar magic even in secret and even if you soak all the backlash.

Another thing to deal with for Awakening (for those new) is that your birth name is your real life name, kinda like in Dresden except that people can just read it off a driver's license or such.  As such, you have to live completely off-grid and use a nickname for daily interaction with people.

This player is pretty laid back on that end. Vulgar on your own with safeguards, nobody cares. Vulgar in a sanctum (or better, a demesne) nobody cares. Vulgar in the middle of time square without something that could disguise it as something else, well, that WOULD BE A PROBLEM, but by then paradox would have eaten you and we'd more likely be fighting abyssal entities for you already, tyvm.

In my GotV head (that is, the way I like to play it,) it all has to do with how careful people are, and the projection of their future footprint on Reality. If it's something simple for a good reason (mind you, GotV Reasons aren't always the same as most) and you get away with it, then good for you. Like... if you are David Copperfield, you can go ahead and disappear the statue of liberty. Nobody's gonna believe you did /that/ anyway, it's all going to be mirrors and FX.

Now if you went down that Mysterium vault and got out a Grimoyre ouv ye olde Daemon Naymes to practice with; then we might have words (and one less grimoyre in the world, hopefully)

I know much of that is blabber, but really, playing for fun is where it is; protecting our own, sometimes from our own stupidity.

Well, it brings its own complications -- obviously a legal name change is traceable, if someone suspects and goes to the effort. Depending on where mages are established, it might even set off warning flags and get you a friendly visit. But it won't be revealed by a casual driver's license examination.

Easy enough to do. San Francisco allows people to change their legal name with a bit of work. It won't do anything to alter your true name (which is whatever your parents gave you), but anyone who just has your new name won't have a mystical connection to you. It'll still be listed on governmental records as being changed, but it would take some detective work for people to track that down.

How about everyone gets 10 (or 9) levels to spread however they like (or save for learning in game), with at least 3(or4) of those to go on their primary path? That way you get the same result (A max of 2 master arcana or apprenticeship in almost all of them; glass cannon vs JoAT)

Maybe, I am worried about making it too difficult for people to pick up who are less familiar with mage...

However I suppose I could always do some pre-prepared "serving suggestions" that people can pick, and those more confident with the ideas of the system could customize their own.

Also sorry everyone for not getting guidelines up already, there's been a lot to consider with how best to make this freeform.

I'm looking at a Silver Ladder, so, don't worry - there'll be someone else to take the heat off you. Even with subtle Arcanum, the SL considers vulgar magic for questionable purposes somewhere between divine right and divine MANDATE, and there is nothing clean or safe about pushing for new Awakenings. As an example, here's a character sheet for the Hierarch.

True Name : Albert Sanderly
Shadow Name : Magnus
Age : 55
Sex : Male
Gender: Male
Classification : Mage
Relationship Status : Widower with two children.

Path : Oubrimos
Order : Adamantine Arrow

Height : 6'2"
Weight / Body type : Fit for his age but beginning to lose some of the muscle he had when younger, remains lean and wiry however.
Hair : Grey and cut short
Skin : White
Eyes : Blue
Distinguishing Features : Is covered in tattoos of Atlantean runes of power, although none of these are anywhere that shows past his clothes.
Standard Clothing : Prefers casual styles of clothes but in a more formal and conservative fashion.
Face Claim : Simon Rogers

Likes : Gardening, feeling safe, security, order,
Dislikes : People causing chaos, politicians

About : Albert never cared much about the world of magic, his focus was more solidly upon his family. When he awakened though to the existence of magic and learned of all the threats out there he worked to protect not only his own family but the other ordinary families out there. The Adamantine Arrows took him in, although he had no previous experience with combat because he was willing to work to make a difference. Like all Arrows, he fought when it was necessary, but his main talent was in organizing and coordinating matters for the other Arrows. He conducted research, managed the order's finances and helped to organize training and logistics. When the war started between the orders, his only concern was ending it as quickly as possible. He would do anything to keep the city safe from mages running amok, even taking power over the city himself as Hierarch which he managed by any means necessary.

His wife was murdered ten years ago. He never involved the rest of the magical community but found out what was responsible himself and took care of it quietly. He has two sons, one of whom has awakened and is a member of the Consillium. His other son never awakened but is a sleepwalker, able to perceive magic without wielding it himself.

Reputation : Magnus has been in power for as long as most mages have been part of the Consillium of San Francisco and has always seemed a permanent fixture. People have heard stories though of the conflict between the orders of mages that predated his ascension to Hierarch of the city. Each of the five orders had been in a civil war for control of the city, however in 1985 he took over the Adamantine Arrows and managed to unite the five orders in peace. There are some rumours that he may have killed the previous leader of the Adamantine Arrows to achieve this, but few people would ever say this within his hearing. He rules the city with a strict hand but is usually considered fair and practical minded.

Sexuality : Straight
Player Sexual On's and Offs : https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=99724.0
Character Ons : Romance, stable relationships, the approval of his sons for any new relationship.
Character Offs : Blatant seduction, anything too kinky.

Player : Caehlim (NPC).

Magical knowledge Magnus is slightly more experienced than other mages, being the hierarch and has slightly more magical knowledge than player characters will possess.

Time : Disciple
Life : Disciple
Forces : Adept
Prime :  Master

Magic works at a distance: You can even cast spells on people or objects that are in distant places, however you need a magical link between you to do this. Knowing a person's true name (what they were named by their parents at birth) or having something that comes from their body (such as hair, blood, fingernails) is always enough unless they're behind a magical ward. If you don't have either of the above you need any two of: An accurate picture, An object that's important to them, Strong shared emotions between you or knowing where they are currently. This is called Sympathetic Magic. It's always harder to cast and is more likely to cause paradox, even if the effect is relatively subtle.

Okay, did some research on this. (interestingly enough, best resource I found was a transgender forum where people were discussing namechanges as it relates to gender reassignment).

In Californian law you are allowed to use a different name than your own just by using it and acknowledging that it's you, so long as it is done without intent to defraud and as long as you're not a convict, sex offender, etc. This would include abbreviated first names, omitting middle names etc.

However the Californian Drivers License and ID card include the middle names automatically since September 2010 source and requires a legal court order to change.

A lot of places which insist on using your Drivers license or ID card, would then use your full name. Apparently in recent years it's a lot harder to avoid using your full name.

Edit:
Quote from: VonDoom on September 30, 2014, 03:34:01 AMEdit: another question. Is there an equivalent to oWoD static magic/sorcerers?

Yes. Much like oWoD there is a distinction between True Magic (known as Supernal Magic in Awakening) and Hedge Magic (Generally called sorcery but the name varies in Awakening). True Mages don't really show much interest in it usually and just view it as part of this reality (which they call the Fallen World) having nothing to do with the higher levels of reality. There are also psychics who are slightly different again. Neither of them really come anywhere near close to the power level of the full supernatural races (Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Changeling) and actually have a specific rules term for them of Lesser Templates (Which also includes Ghouls, Ghosts and some similar weaker creatures).

Yep. It sounds like it's a bit annoying, and takes a bit of time, filling out a lot of forms and paying about $600 to get it all organized so most people wouldn't bother. But for a mage who knows the secret power of names, they're not most people and that's a good investment.

CHARACTER WIP
I will continue to work on this as I can, hope to be done in a day or two

True Name : Bernard Smith (* see About section), legally changed to Danforth (Danny) Samuelson
Shadow Name : Trevisanus (Trevi) / The Sectorem
Age : 45
Sex : male
Gender:  male
Classification : mage
Relationship Status : single / casual dalliances

Path : Moros
Order : Free Council

Height : 6' 0"
Weight / Body type : 190 lbs
Hair : brown, stylishly tousled
Skin : white
Eyes : brown/hazel
Distinguishing Features : boyish good looks, impish glint in his eye
Standard Clothing : dressy casual: jacket/blazer over colorful shirts, slacks or jeans
Face Claim : Trent Dawson

Likes : the Finer Things in life, making deals, schmoozing, uncovering knowledge, maintaining control
Dislikes : rudeness, dealing in bad faith, willful ignorance, chaotic situations

About : Danny was born several minutes past midnight on January 1st at a free clinic in one of the poorest areas of San Francisco and was given up sight unseen at birth by his mother; his Bernard Smith name was given by the staff in accordance with policy for such cases (a "B" name for second newborn that day).  He spent many years in the foster care system and while never enduring the horrors many orphans did, he also never felt attached or close to anyone.  He observed that while hard work and dedication could lead to success, the path was much easier for those who had many people they could call on for favors and support.  So he set about learning to be a social chameleon, with a gregarious nature and ability to empathize and ingratiate himself into most situations, groups, sub-cultures or social circles.

Using this ability to easily integrate himself into a wide-ranging set of groups Danny cultivates a vast network of friends, contacts, acquaintances and clients as he goes.

Danny changed his name as soon as he achieved legal adulthood, basing his new name on that of colonial alchemist Samuel Danforth.

While his stake in the funeral home is fairly public knowledge, known only to a very select few is that he owns the gentlemen's smoking establishment he frequents with clients.  He has hidden this information by creating a fictitious absentee owner and installing a highly loyal mundane as manager. In addition to using the club to meet clients and schmooze, he also uses very discreet surveillance to obtain information about the members and their guests.

Reputation : Danny is welcome almost everywhere and because of this he is able to move more freely than most between the various Orders, often acting as a neutral broker, mediator, or facilitator making introductions, smoothing things over or acquiring and selling various bits of information and items.

In addition, Danny using his talents in the paths of Matter, Life and Death, he also provides discreet services creating documents, altering appearances or providing treatments to a client's health and well-being.  To desperate mundanes, he is someone in the shadows who is able to obtain unheard of, highly experimental drugs and medicines to treat difficult or unusual conditions and illnesses.

Danny has a reputation for maintaining confidences, discretion and upholding the deals he makes, never dealing in bad faith.  However, in his eyes any information he uncovers about a client not strictly covered by any agreement/deal is fair game to be utilized for his purposes.

While he often performs his services to benefit the greater good,to foster good-will or establish connections, Danny is also capable of exacting costly payments from his clients; be they in the form of currency, favors or some other sacrifice.

He never uses his information or resources to force someone to do something against their will, however Danny does often present difficult choices as part of his payment, sometimes leading to his clients 'consenting' to activities they would never had chosen to participate in otherwise.

Along with another Mage he is co-owner of a prestigious funeral home in the area and although seldom involved in the day-to-day activities, he often works out of the offices, occasionally meeting contacts and clients there.  More often he is out and about the city gathering his intel and maintaining his relationships wherever and however he needs to.

Another favorite haunt of Danny's, especially for clientle with more high-brow tastes, is a gentlemen's smoking club which serves high-end cigars, liquors and extreme privacy.

I am very much interested in the game! I've got two mage characters I've really been itching to try.  I'll probably get a character jammed out in a couple of days -- really just need a face claim.

Fantastic. Look forward to it.

It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

Don't worry too much about Magnus, he's scripted to die at the start of the game. His character sheet is more just for an example. I think Midori Sadi is the only other oubrimos currently.

In regards to Arcanum Selection for characters: I do think enforcing, or even encouraging, that Mages are restricted to their Path Arcanum is kind of... boring. While yes, they should probably have a focus in one and some investment in the other -- if all the Moros have Matter 5/Death 4 (or vice versa), you end up with people who are pretty similar in regards to magic. I think that third Arcanum is sort of an interesting flavor. A Moros who also has Life on top of Matter/Death has a lot of different options than one that has Mind instead of Life.

Agreed. I've opened it up so that people can select their own arcanum however they like with up to 9 points between them. I'd encourage people to take some skill in their path magic, but it's just going to be free choice. In addition to not worrying about improvised/rotes or extra mana costs I'm also not worrying about inferior arcana either.

Very WIP character draft. I have more since it's the revival of an old character, but those text passages I need to a) translate into English and b) adjust for the game.

Nathan Blackwell

True Name :  Nathaniel David Alexander Blackwell (legally shortened to Nathan Blackwell)
Shadow Name : Logos
Age : 37
Sex :  male
Gender: male
Classification :  Mage
Relationship Status :  Married (swinging, always full disclosure with his wife)

Path : Obrimos
Order : Mysterium (Eyes of Ain Soph)

Mundane Occupation/Life:
Nathan is a high-school chemistry teacher and active in the scientific community. Between these activities and his family, he was unwilling to give up his mundane life and has so far managed to make it work quite well. He affects a chronic medical condition with his Apprentice-level Life Magic to explain any sudden disappearance acts related to his other life.

Mage Occupation/Life:
Nathan is a bit of an odd duck -- his strong desire to protect his family and mundane social environment would have made him a good Guardian of the Veil or perhaps the Adamatine Arrows and sometimes he regrets sticking with his scholastic roots, but he is still a member of the Mysterium and the Eyes of Ain Soph therein, focusing primarily on research -- he researches ways to combine his vast knowledge of chemistry, biology and physics with working magic - both to enhance vulgar magic and make the latter coincidental.

He has generally demonstrated a willingness to freely assist in activities that are 'for the good of the community', whether for normals or mages.

Height :
Weight / Body type :  thin with some muscle/in good shape
Hair :  brown
Skin :  fair-caucasian
Eyes :  brown
Distinguishing Features :  A tattoo of a modified version (code symbols instead of element shorthands) of Theodor Benfey's periodic table  on the left upper arm.

Standard Clothing :  prefers simple but practical formal wear (properly measured suits that look off the shelf,  ties) in a work environment; jeans, shirt and brown leather jacket at home/in friendly company.
Face Claim :  Liam Neeson

About :

Reputation :
Logos is known as a mage willing to help others with their problems if asked, as long as they appear of solid moral standing. For Logos, this means a willingness to help rather than a desire to harm. He apparently still maintains his former life and has answered any attempts to pry into it with harsh dismissals or swift retribution -- he is a man of peace, but perfectly willing to step outside these principles if he has to protect his loved ones and way of life. He seems to have connections to influential people, though whether through family relations or his scientific work is unknown.

SL: Nothing more than above. He disapproves of their more power-hungry individuals.

Mysterium: Fellow Eyes members know his real background, though not his full name.

GotV: Since his experimental activities can be very dangerous and easily invoke paradox if something goes wrong, his relations to the Guardians are strained despite his general suitability to their cause. They know he is always willing to help, but bears watching.

AA: He maintains good relations with some Adamantine Arrow members and often consults younger mages, giving advise on how a desired spell might be cast in a way to make it less risky. They know of his magical research and his willingness to help. He also sometimes gets involved in magical sparring -- to keep his edge for when he needs it.

Free Council:
He is known as a helpful mentor-figure who doesn't push free spirits into joining his club. He's always happy to explain the basic rules without the annoying formalities and recruitment pitches and loves to talk about new discoveries or old ones that are approached with a new mindset.

Mare - Mastigos / Guardian of the Veil

True Name : David Maxfield
Shadow Name : Mare
Age : 25
Sex : Male
Gender: Male
Classification : Mage
Relationship Status : Single

Path : Mastigos
Order : Guardians of the Veil

Mundane Occupation/Life : The Sleep of Reason: 'The Sleep of Reason' is actually a club in downtown that is owned by Mare. It's a two story affair, with the bottom floor serving as a dance club favoring new wave, EDM, and darker trance. The upstairs serves as a lounge, serving only fine liquor, and the music is only so loud as to serve as white noise for privacy. Both floors favor dark red and black color schemes, with the walls a crimson red with black stencils of shapes of bats, owls, snakes, and other horrifying silhouettes. Art buffs and intellectuals may recognize that the name 'The Sleep of Reason' refers to the the painting 'The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters' by Francisco Goya. Mare occasionally tends bar, more for the conversations and for the act of being a host than for the financial gain. Mages are welcome in the bar, and Mare even offers 'privacy' booths, where he can place Wards created that block any 'Language' in and out to make eavesdropping impossible.
Mage Occupation/Life : Unlicensed Psychology: Mare has never been schooled as a psychologist, but with progression in the Mind Arcanum, he has learned to lay the mind bare and traverse it. He's not interested in helping people through the stress of a mundane day, more "Let me help you cope with the Abyssal horrors you've seen." For Mages, he offers his services to help them cope with the Supernal through brute force psychic surgery. For the rare mortals he deals with, coping with the Supernal or Abyssal is usually done by making them forget it ever happened.

Height : 5'9"
Weight / Body type : Athletic / Lithe
Hair : Red
Skin : Fair
Eyes : Green
Distinguishing Features : None
Standard Clothing : Jeans, loose graphic t-shirts, leather jacket; brass ring with a flat, polished, circular plate over the top of his finger.
Face Claim : Unknown

Likes : Adrenaline, Duty, Mixed Drinks
Dislikes : Timidness, Irresponsibility, Ignorance

About :
Mare's childhood was mostly uneventful, simply because he wasn't able to do much. Even as a young child, he was plagued with night terrors that made it impossible for him to properly sleep. There was no trauma to cause it, and no true phobias to deal with -- except the Pavlovian response to the act of sleeping itself. It put him in a state of never being fully asleep, and thus, never being fully awake. His schedule was erratic, and he was too exhausted to ever be active. His parents did the best they could to accommodate his condition, even having him home schooled by a private tutor that was basically 'on call' for when Mare was alert enough to actually retain anything. Thankfully, Mare was bright enough to quickly pick up the lessons in the few windows of time he had.

Mare Awakened when he was nineteen, and for the sleepy, nightmare-addled youth, it was both a metaphorical and literal awakening. With his deal with the Watchtower of Pandemonium, the night terrors ceased; leaving Mare to rationalize that the night terrors were actually Pandemonium trying to reach out to him even as a child. A combination of going from a sleep-deprived daze to having a normal sleep cycle, as well as going from a Sleeper to an all powerful will-worker, caused Mare to slip into a series of dangerous risks; drinking, drugs, extreme sports, spontaneous trips, and more.

He survived those three years before the Guardians found him and recruited him. He 'settled down' and decided that he had to do something to make up for the time that was lost as a child. Since he rationalized those night terrors as Pandemonium, he had to make some good out of his Awakened gift. He moved into the city only three years ago, quickly working to establish himself in both the mortal world with his club, The Sleep of Reason, and among Mages as a confidant and a psychologist.

Reputation :
Doctor/Patient Confidentiality: Mare sees a lot of stuff in the memories of willing patients, and there is a clear understanding that the information isn't to be shared. After all, if it got out that Mare was sharing or selling information, it means he wouldn't have any additional patients in the future. Mages are well paying customer, but the information he learns is a font of knowledge and second-hand experience that he's not about to give up.
Fear: Mare believes Fear is the best tool to maintaining the Veil. Sleepers will not question or investigate that which they are afraid of. Sleepers accept that they can be irrational and misunderstand or misremember things in times of great fear. Mare uses fear to direct, distract, encourage, dissuade, and when push comes to shove, to disable.
Morality: Mare understands emotions as a science, and that can make him come off as cold or aloof. Much of what we consider about Morality is based around sympathy and empathy, and as Mare has learned to view them as malleable, tangible constructs, he is more easily able to ignore them when it comes to 'big picture' or 'greater goals.'
As a Guardian: Every Mage has to be responsible for their own Magic and their life. Mages' actions have far reaching consequences, much more than any Sleeper, in both the Fallen Realm and the Supernal Realm. Mare sees the Guardians as heroes and martyrs who work to fix the errors of 'irresponsible' mages, and secondly, to keep Mages from making future errors.

Mare is accepted. Most mage communities end up needing a good shrink, so I imagine his service would come in handy.

The club is perfectly fine. Since your character is a Master mind mage, and clearly quite established and experienced would you like the club to have a place of power inside it (probably a back room rather than the main dance-floor) where magic can be used without causing paradox? That would be quite appropriate.

Hooray! I welcome any opportunity to make the Sleep of Reason more useful to the Mage community (and myself).

Can you give me some fluff on what a 'Place of Power' is thematically? Are we just going 'Demanse?' or is it just a strong Hallow? Or something not from the Mage books? I only ask so I can properly describe it within the history and within the game!

Oh sorry, I wasn't sure how familiar you were with mage so I was trying to describe it rather than specifically saying mage terms. I was referring to a demesne, although a hallow wouldn't be inappropriate either if you'd prefer. It could even be both, although if it was both then it would only be a weaker hallow.

For those reading who are not familiar with what I'm talking about, mages can put a small fragment of their soul into a physical object. These objects are known as a soul-stone and are quite useful, but also dangerous to you if anyone else gets their hands on it. It can always be used to set up a mystical link to you because it holds part of your soul. Mage tradition says that if anyone has your soul-stone, they're able to demand three favours from you and then they have to give it back. While this is just a tradition and there's no obligation to follow it, most do (The person whose soulstone it is because they're at risk, the person who stole it because if you hold onto it forever people will take stupid risks to get it back if you don't offer it in ransom). A master mage (of any type of magic), can use a soulstone to create a demense, a place where magic can be used without the risk of paradox.

There are also places called Hallows which are natural conjunctions of ley-lines where magical energy naturally appears on earth, so long as they remain without becoming tainted, disrupted or similar they produce some form of magical substance called Tass, which mages can use for magical power. It is also easier to cast spells within a hallow. Tass can appear as anything, if a hallow is in a garden then a tree might grow magical apples whereas if the hallow is in a scrapyard, the metal might rust into a magical red powder.

Hi there all,

I am still finalizing my character (the WIP is here https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=214515.msg10550913#msg10550913) but there is a potential tie-in for another character in my background if anyone is interested.

Specifically, "Along with another Mage he is co-owner of a prestigious funeral home in the area.."
Probably most appropriate for a Mage with high Death ability.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there as an idea.

(added)  After reading Caehlim's previous post, perhaps the funeral home could be a hallow particularly geared towards Death magic.

Do both of those have the Paradox reducing effect? Or just the demanse?

For "The Sleep of Reason," I think a Demanse would be more thematic, given that the club probably wouldn't have created a Hallow above a very small level in the three years it's open. Plus, I like the idea of Mare's soulstone being used for it; that he has some part of him in the environment.

Caehlim

Only the demesne reduces paradox. No magic, no matter how improbable it is counts as violating reality in a demesne because you've made reality in that place a 'part of you' by keeping your soulstone there. However this doesn't work if an ordinary person sees you use the magic, bringing normals into a demesne is usually a bad idea for that reason, they can bring all your carefully placed magic crashing down with disbelief and paradox.

Hallows are just a well that constantly refills with magical energy. Reality is still just as fragile near them, although the magical energy does empower spells a little and you can pour some of your extra magical energy into making a spell less likely to cause paradox (giving it more energy then it needs) so having a hallow can help reduce paradox but only indirectly.

It's possible that he created the club in that location because the location was already a hallow, they tend to be somewhat naturally occurring phenomena and sometimes they're found in an inactive state by mages (hard to find, but some sort of bad feng shui or shifted ley-line stopped it from working properly) and brought back to life. This either takes doing some proper feng shui around it, or a mage with Prime. (The Hierarch would have been willing to help mages with something like this).

Apologies if this seems like nitpicking, but seeing as how the game is using some but not all information from the Mage book, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't making any assumptions. Let me also put the disclaimer that I have NO issue with straying from the book -- this is not supposed to tell you how it's supposed to be, I just want to have the same vision as our dear GM. I'm putting the questions under a spoiler, because I'm worried that for people NOT familiar with the actual Mage: The Awakening system -- these questions might cause more confusion than answers.

Nitty Gritty Questions!

1) If I read the blurb on magic properly, within this game, ALL Magic causes Paradox and ALL Magic can be 'disbelief'-ed, correct? There is no real distinction between Vulgar and Covert as there is in the books?
2) A spell can only be effected by Disbelief if they are aware of it in some way, correct? For example: If I have a spell making me good at firearms, but nobody sees me shooting a gun -- the spell is immune to Disbelief until such a time.
3) Your fluff for Demense made me question: Does the paradox reducing effect only work for me? Or any mages within the Demense?

For "The Sleep of Reason", I'm happy to say I worked with the Hierach in tracking down a location that might have a resonance around something like Joy, Celebration, Relaxation or even Security (people feeling safe talk and unwind more). The Hallow fed off the energies/emotions from club-goers and got stronger. Mare added his own Soul Stone into the mix once he achieved Mastery, helping enforce the already prevalent emotions there.

Mare has Prime 2, but if that's not enough to take care of it -- I'd love to create a relationship with another PC that does have enough Prime to say Mare contracted them in the past. Hell, we could do that even if Prime 2 is enough, and say it was before Mare had Prime 2.

Kythia

Do you have any characters you would particularly like people to play for metaplot/balance/whatever reasons?
242037

Caehlim

Thanks Lockepick, some great questions there. I've gone into some detail, which is again in spoilers for the same reason you did, it'll just confuse people who don't already play Mage.

Nitty Gritty Answers!

1) If I read the blurb on magic properly, within this game, ALL Magic causes Paradox and ALL Magic can be 'disbelief'-ed, correct? There is no real distinction between Vulgar and Covert as there is in the books?

In nWoD, There actually is no solid definable difference between Vulgar and Covert, except "These spells are always covert because it says so in the rules except when they're not (improbable spells)" and "These spells are Vulgar (even though they're not actually in any way obvious, but it's just to balance the power out)". Then there's the whole sympathetic makes spells vulgar automatically rule. The whole thing's a mess that takes 200 pages of rules to cover completely and even then they needed to go into massive errata in the Tome of the Mysteries for people using improvised magic rather than the rotes.

I mostly prefer nWoD but it's one of those times when I missed the simplicity of Ascension's Vulgar and Coincidental (Simply: would a viewer consider this impossible). Anyway, short of reprinting their list of spells in full there was no easy way to explain the difference between vulgar and covert the way nWoD does it because it's literally done on a case by case basis in Awakening.

That's why I just went with the narrative description "When you push magic too far and try to change things too much", which I will admit is vague as hell but I'm basically leaving it up to people's judgement unless it's a matter where people ask for me to make a ruling. You'll get to decide if/when your character suffers paradox and describe it happening. If people are pulling off constant vulgar effects that seem a bit too much, I'll contact them and suggest that it's probably too far.

However there's no intention for this game to be balanced, rules heavy or overly structured. It's simply meant to be narrative and run off what feels right to the people in a scene.

Disbelief requires that the viewer notices the magic. It will never apply if the magic does not produce an obvious effect that is outside the range of possibility.

2) A spell can only be effected by Disbelief if they are aware of it in some way, correct? For example: If I have a spell making me good at firearms, but nobody sees me shooting a gun -- the spell is immune to Disbelief until such a time.

Exactly. Even more so, if they see you shooting a gun and have no reason to believe that you're not good at firearms, then disbelief still wouldn't affect it since there's nothing going on that looks impossible. However if they've got your complete markmanship report in their hands, they've just read it and seen that you're a terrible shot and seen you holding the gun wrong. Then you suddenly cast the spell and are hitting every target, then disbelief might kick in.

3) Your fluff for Demense made me question: Does the paradox reducing effect only work for me? Or any mages within the Demense?

Any mages. Although on a sheer fluff level, mages from the same path as you feel more comfortable in there and they also have a slight boost to the favoured arcana of that path. It's based on your soul, not theirs but it's still the soul of a mage and its benefits would apply to any other mage.

QuoteFor "The Sleep of Reason", I'm happy to say I worked with the Hierach in tracking down a location that might have a resonance around something like Joy, Celebration, Relaxation or even Security (people feeling safe talk and unwind more). The Hallow fed off the energies/emotions from club-goers and got stronger. Mare added his own Soul Stone into the mix once he achieved Mastery, helping enforce the already prevalent emotions there.

That sounds perfect.

QuoteMare has Prime 2, but if that's not enough to take care of it -- I'd love to create a relationship with another PC that does have enough Prime to say Mare contracted them in the past. Hell, we could do that even if Prime 2 is enough, and say it was before Mare had Prime 2.

I can't find my copy of Sanctum and Sigil just at this second and it's got the details of what level of prime would be needed. Off the top of my head, I believe it's either done instantly with a Prime Making effect (Prime 5) or done over a bit of time manipulating ley-lines with a Prime Weaving effect (so Prime 3) or it's done by purely mundane means without any spells (Prime 1 Unveiling would be very helpful to doing this though).

As an aside, if you have Prime 2, you could have the building run its electricity directly off the leylines and you wouldn't need to pay any power-bills.

Not really, no. I'm hoping to get a fairly diverse range of people together because that's often more interesting, but I prefer to see what the players create and tailor the story to them rather than vice versa.

Anyone too completely antisocial would be difficult since they wouldn't then associate with the rest, but otherwise any sort of character would be fine.

That sounds fine. I haven't gone into a lot of detail on the seers anywhere yet at all but if you're familiar with them then it would be fine to include them in your story as long as it's nothing completely world reshaping.

I figure that with the strong Adamantine Arrow presence, there would be few obvious or warlike Seers causing any difficulties, but probably a fair few more subtle and calculating ones that are remaining much more secret and diabolical with their plotting.

Nods~  well it has to do with the The Seers of the Pantechnicon Skopoi faction, they took her when she was younger. They end up seeing her as an Oracle. Their link to the Exarches, their true Manteria. Totally in her BG as she will have a rather impressive mind spell hidden from scrutiny that buries the memories and makes it seem as if she has amnesia. So you don't have to even poke that possible plot stuffs unless you want to :)

Got an Acanthus Mysterium idea burning a hole in my head.  Hopefully we don't have too many Acanthi yet.
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

A childhood best left glossed over.  She's not sure if she was adopted by one of her druggie mom's "boyfriends" or not, had reports with Social Workers, Parole Officers and the Police before she was seven and ran away from home at 8.  Intelligent readers can likely fill in the gaps.  Homeless for many years, minor prostitution, lots of shoplifting, its a common story.  Those with better skills than her might be able to piece a lot more of it together than she can by putting together reports form various agencies.  Probably even work out her real name.  Due to erratic then non-existent schooling her own literacy is far too weak to attempt it and she doesn't really have the foothold in society to even know where to start.  Or regular society at least.  She knows everyone else on the streets and those who work with them: hostel staff, beat officers, etc.  She also knows a few "straight" people through a combination of good humour and being adopted as a lucky charm.  Dropping some money in her tin leads to a good day - most assume its confirmation bias or similar but it really does.

Reputation :
Everyone knows Carly.  Because Carly, eventually, knows lots.  Ask her who was doing something in the park last night and maybe throw a few bucks into the tin and she's pretty certain Big John was sleeping there last night and she's generally right.  Again, her engagement in society isn't really enough to ever use this sa fully as it could be used - she lacks the political savvy to ever be an information broker.  A pack of cigs, maybe a place to sleep for the night or a couple of burgers - her prices are cheap for the service she offers.

Yeah, Carly seems great. San Francisco is also well known for attracting homeless people (largely because of the excellent weather there) and there's quite a large community of street people for her to fit into, so it certainly doesn't seem out of place with the setting. Of course in the world of darkness the crowds of street-people make excellent hunting grounds for a lot of the nastier supernatural predators, so she would be in a great position to give people a heads up on what's out there.

All right, finally, here and without further ado:

Behold the Squid!

True Name : I’m not sure which one is more real to him,  if any; we can work that out during play if it’s ever needed.
Shadow Name : Teuthis
Age : Thirty-something, though he’s widely believed to be younger.
Sex : Fluid
Gender: Fluid. Player will use ‘He’ for coherence where applies.
Classification : Mage
Relationship Status : Who has time for that? Okay, maybe one or twenty. Do sleepwalker retainers count?

Path : Thyrsus/Tamer of Rivers
Order : Guardians of the Veil

Mundane Occupation/Life : Teuthis has many go-to identities that are easy to fall into when the time is right and there is need for it, but most of the time he has too little patience or use for a mundane facade of his own. It is always cleaner to pick one that's already there and just take over for a while.

Mage Occupation/Life : In the public light, Teuthis has long run point for a local labyrinth -- their network covers the whole San Francisco branch of the National Park Service with ties to the different native american organizations in the bay area -- and for some time now has been delegating more of that in order to manage some of the flow of information between the Guardians and the other orders, which is a perfect excuse to get to know as many Awakened as want to be known - and to be known by them, in turn. It works out, because while he can be Decisive and Just when needed, the Shifter is also charming and playful and laid back for a Guardian -- which means putting him under the spotlight just might be a ploy from the Eye to get a bit of positive PR in the sea of negative light they are often painted in. If so, it just might be working! (A little)

Height : Variable
Weight / Body type : Variable
Hair : Variable
Skin : Variable
Eyes : Variable
Distinguishing Features : A small ‘squid’ mark he keeps somewhere subtly visible; a hollow stone ring artifact made by a Matter expert to change size when he does, and spelled never to come out without a specific word of power.
Standard Clothing : He keeps a lot of disguises around places. A dedicated scarf is usually around in one form or another to facilitate Disguise, and has a certain preference for leather/organic garments.
Face Claim : None for too long! (But feel free to request any)

Likes : Order. Blood. Worthiness. Faun and Games. And water. Oh, water! Fish. Animals. People - they are just another species after all - and the wilderness. Wise Rules. The Hunt.
Dislikes : The clueless and the Dangerous. Having to do something twice. Staying still for too long. Unwise Rules. Waste of resources. Human Greed and the Despoiling of Nature. Wearing the same face two days in a row. Fucking Sharks.

About :
The person he was born as awakened to the Labyrinth under auspicious signs, and was tested thoroughly in every possible way before being taken under their Mentor’s wing. They weren’t the first or the last to be put through those paces, but yes the only one to survive them. Once his mentor decided he was ready for more… well, then he also had to die.

At least it wasn’t permanent, but giving himself to the Water had enough of a cost that he never would be the same, anyway. Squid, the Kraken named him, and not without good reason. There was more learning to have, in the shadows, and some of the hardest was reaching into the path of madness. They stalked, they hunted and they made decisions together. That was when Theutis was born again, taking over the newly-awakened life of one who couldn’t be allowed to live it.

Was it his mentor’s design? Going through the veils and Guardian initiation a second time was a learning experience, as was maintaining his knowledge of the arcana from discovery and the re-learning of every little thing while at the same time being guided into further depths of knowledge on the side and merging both identities into one. He became the tester in time, and the mentor, and some time ago he was brought into a whole different level of the Hunt. As the eye of the Dragon, he watches and he learns from those who watch for him. He knows the darker places to hide where it is least likely to kindle disbelief, and probably every demesne there is in the city as well as who it belongs to -- he often has good relationships with these cabals and has been known to exchange services and favors for the right of entry and use, if only so that he can shift and change safely in a pinch rather than risking the Lie.

Free Council - Does Freedom have an Ethos?
Silver Ladder - Shall we follow Right or Wrong?
Adamantine Arrows - What is worth Protecting?
Mysterium - Can it truly ever be Safe?
Guardians of the Veil - Who watches the Watcher?

Reputation :

Teuthis is pretty all right, for a Guardian. I mean, you could probably not even tell most of the time, because he’s the last to censure people about their mistakes -- for one who changes shape nearly from day to day, the shifter can’t really proselytize against private use of vulgar magic, right? Okay, once in a while he’s had to have a ‘talk’ with some people about being a little more careful, but then they Really Deserved it, and the consensus is that the world is safer for it. Still, that is not really his Calling - he hardly has the time or inclination to police the Awakened who should know better, and would rather work with people than against them.

The Guardian has some quirks, like everyone - you can easily tell it is him by his penchant for sniffing things, even if you missed the ring or birthmark that are always a constant regardless of what he’s chosen to look like -- and how they can be less than politically correct or more than a little off-putting when they get truly passionate about a subject -- that’s just piece and parcel of awakening to the Stony Brook. As it is, their general reputation is that of an approachable person who in spite of visible changes in physique and demeanor is steady on their loyalties and beliefs, while making a point not to demean those of others. “Mage Society is a body of sorts” they have been quoted as to say. “Every part does its own job, but you need all of them working together to keep it healthy - even those that make shit stink.”

Free Council - You are free to make your own choices. I can only hope you make the right ones.
Silver Ladder - You are proven leaders and I shall follow Worth. I can hope  you have all the information you need to lead us down the right path.
Adamantine Arrows - You fight the True fight, I hope we can fight the true Enemy together.
Mysterium - You strive to Know as much as I do. I hope Knowledge always grows tempered with Wisdom.
Guardians of the Veil - You serve the wheel as I do and see much of the same things I see. I hope you can be trusted to serve the common Good rather than your own.

Sexuality : Pansexual, amoral, opportunistic, primal, switch.
Player Sexual On's and Offs : Few and far between, see my linked O/Os which are pretty much all still current.
Character Ons : The perfect Kill. The hunt. Predator and Prey. Adrenaline Rushes. Who are we kidding-- Life.

Okay, extras. I’d like maybe a sikrit/hard to reach Wild Hallow that he can have been bound to? (May have been done by NPC guy as a favor to his Mentor, or in exchange for services?)  Could he maybe have a spirit familiar attuned to him by a Spirit GotV person that may be able to do small things for the asking? It wouldn’t be so much to get the stuff done as to have a way to pass as a Shaman of sorts without using Spirit.

I’d also love to form connections and shared backgrounds with people - former or even semi-current cabal mates, frenemies, grudges, former and/or semi-current mentors/disciples are specially welcome, so feel free to contact me with ideas if you don’t have a character, and I will be contacting those of you who already do.

To sweeten the offer, I’m going to hold a first-come-first-serve giveaway of trade hooks, as follows:

1- You know a Big Secret (comes with oath of Silence attached) and you owe me a middling favor.
2- I know a Big Secret (can come with choice of silence-enforcement as agreed) and I owe you a middling favor
3- We’re trading partners. I give you something you want and you give me something I want in a regular basis.
4- One of us knows something about the other that we aren’t supposed to know (we’ll have to figure out how that happened) The other one has something of the other that they totally shouldn’t have (this one can get really awesome or really creepy quickly, so will take more work)
5- Luke, I’m your father. Squidoo is probably not old enough to have an adult children (save exceptional cases,) but blood relations aren’t out of the question either way.
6- You killed my sister, prepare to Die. -- Or any permutations thereof.

If you're specially greedy and have great ideas, I can even give you Two, or bring your own!

About :
Her back ground, its long and to be fair she only remembers broken bits and pieces of it.

Lily Gibbons was born on December 21 1986 in Albany, Wisconsin. Her parents were Chris and Jill Gibbons. They were scientists that escaped from the Soviet Union years earlier when her older brother Todd was conceived. She was born just before true midnight and greeted the world with a boisterous cry, soon after she lit up the whole room, with a smile.

As they grew up, her brother always protected her. Todd always stood up against any bully or big meanie that tried to hurt his little sister. Their parents kept them both safe from what they could, along with embracing and helping to nurture and grow their talents. Both excelled in school, but Lily also embraced her creative side and began to express herself through music. Lilt took up the piano and singing with a passion, her small yet beautiful voice growing stronger everyday.

Years later, Gloria had just preformed a recital in which she sang and played a Russian lullaby on piano. And when she was done Lily found herself waiting backstage as the rest of the acts went on. She stood quietly as another girl performed as a sudden uneasiness came over her. A shadow fell across her small form; her eyes grew wide as they began to creep closer and closer. Gloria started to take shaking steps backwards to try and get away, something inside her telling her to run from the shadows.

But there was no running, before her stood the first of a long line of Seers that would fill her life now. The Seers of the Pantechnicon Skopoi faction had taken her, but she was too young to understand that, and was far too young and defenseless to fight them. They saw the small child as if she had been marked by fate, she would become a gifted Oracle their link to the Exarches, their true Manteria. She had already shown signs of the gift with her dreams, having predicted her grandmother’s death before it happened. Her visions came and went even at such a young age, but after a while Lily kept it to herself knowing it scared some of the people around her. But it was too late, the Seers had found out and they were now here to claim her and form her into a being they could control.

Lily had no idea what happened to her or why she had really been taken. Her once happy world shrank down to a small room with nothing but a bed, a small bathroom, and four gray depressing walls. Days passed and the only sign of another person came from the small sliding door that allowed the food slip into her room. She screams for help, for someone to tell her what was happening soon died down as they feel upon deaf ears.

Soon Lily stopped eating, stopped talking, and stopped trying as the lightly slowly left her young eyes. It was then they came, the Seers pulled her from the room and began the task of trying to force her visions. They used countless methods, pain, fear, shock; everything they could do to create what they thought would be the one perfect conduit.

Years passed and all she knew was pain or the numbness of nothing on the rare occasions that she was allowed to sleep. Each day Lily crept closer and closer to losing all of herself. The days ticked by as her breaking point neared. It was when they tried to use a look a like for her brother that Lily finally snapped.

She was 10 then, years had passed but it was the loss of hope that finally broke what was left of her fragile heart. Energy filled the room; and the very foundations began to crack. Their attempts had back fired in a way they had not expected, Lily awakened. She awakened as Moros...but her path was twisted and the Obermos tower revealed itself to her as well. She was indeed a moros but some how…some way she had also awakened with such a connection to the Aether (Obermos path). And it was that tower she ended up signing her name and her soul over too.

Lives where lost and the building was left as nothing but a crumbling pile of ash. Lily was left standing with her mind shattered from the effort of it all. The last remaining Seers of that group pulled back and watched as the small girl began to walk. She walked for what seemed like forever till finally coming upon a road and collapsing.

She was found by an old man that was driving into town; he brought the small girl into town and took her to the hospital. From there Lily was watched as a plan came into affect to stay close to her. The Seers (though she had no idea that they were this) sent people to her pretending to be her family. Forging paperwork was easy for a mage, and they soon took the small broken girl with them. From there they tried another method of care, nursing her and treating her as if she were really their child. Nearly a year passed before she spoke though, and even then it was nothing of note. Her fragile mind nothing but a jumbled mess even to a Master of the mind. So they did the only thing they thought would bring forth their ultimate goal. They burred the past and hid it away behind a spell that would take a large amount of scrutiny to even realize was there, much less have any idea what it was really hiding. Giving her the name Gabby Crosswell to further hide the truth from her and the world.

That spell held for years, and Lily once again turned to music for solace. Yet the strange urge to learn how to protect herself grew, so she took up learning how to defend herself. The ‘family’ showed her the world of magic and helped her pick a shadow name. Magic and fate had become a shattering addition to her life. But with the lie held firmly in place she grew to be a bold young woman. A well known underground Musian going by the name of Runa LaCross and wearing a mask as she preformed. Something she thought was to allow her to have a life, but in truth it was to hide her face for anyone that might recognize it. But it was her boxing that ended up changing her life once more.

During a fight against a mage she fell, the mage using spells to fight back because they were losing against a woman. The mind spell knocked enough of her memories free to show Gabby that her life was a lie. Furious, confused, and lost again, Gloria ran. She lived out of her car, camping when the weather allowed, and worked odd jobs when she could find them. She was a drifter never staying in one place long, and stopped performing her music do to wanting to stay low and losing the passion and drive that let the music come.

Little did she know or still doesn't know, is that the “Family’ she had were not only Seers. But were also still fallowing her trying to watch over her and see if the signs were waiting for presented themselves through her.

From here Gloria traveled around, hiding from her old life and trying to find a new one, taking on any fights against the supernatural that came her way, almost recklessly charging into battles that were heavily weighed against her. And though she has danced with death on several occasions Gloria has always seemed to come out on top. Still to this day she keeps moving, and searching for who she really is and truth behind why her world was so broken.

Reputation : Runa LaCross is still known among the underground music ground, but has not preformed in several years. Rumors of what may have happened to her circle the grapevine. Gloria the mage is known within the mage community for being one always there when the shit hits the fan. Some would confuse her with an AA if it weren't for the fact that she bucks up against orders more times then they can count. But it is always for the good of the situation. Her name has traveled through the Mage community and it isn't uncommon for someone to at least hear her name. " Wait your that Gloria...the one that...."

Figured I would post interest, if y'all are still looking for players. *grin*

I'm not too familiar with the Awakening system really, so suggestions are more than welcome. :P It looks like we have two Oubrimos, two Moros, one Mastigos, one Acanthus, and two Thyrsus so far, yes? As well as.. *counts* Two Guardians of the Veil, three Free Council, two Adamantine Arrows, and one Mysterium. (Although there has been interest in others, I'm only counting the actual sheets so far, discounting the Hierophant)

I was thinking of running a Silver Ladder Mage. Mastigos? The whole Mind Magic aspect seems like it would fit with the Silver Ladder, and Space Magic seems handy for his particular brand of politics. Someone that runs an antique shop dealing in unusual artifacts, or maybe an occult bookshop. Maybe as a kind of 'public face' for that sort of thing, that deals with the new Mages that Awaken? On the more cunning side, he sees helping the new Mages as a good way of networking. After all, people will remember him fondly and even owe him if he helps them get settled within this new life. He's probably not all that fond of drama, or the 'typical' politics of the Consillium, but he's well known in those circles.

Does that make sense? ..I'm beginning to feel like I really need to read those books. Hrm. For that matter, how do people Awaken? Is it simply that one day something 'clicks' different in a person's head? I didn't see that listed anywhere off hand in the thread. Either way, something like this maybe? Not really sure background wise or reputation yet, just kind of tossing ideas around and trying to find something that clicks. I'm definitely not sure on how magic works, let alone in a freeform setting. ..Yup, definitely going to end up reading those books if I get into this. -_-

HopeFox

If you're still open for new players, I've been looking for a good Awakening game! I've got three ideas kicking around my head at the moment.

One is a Free Council Moros kid who is big on collecting scraps from junkyards and giving them a new chance at being useful. He's a strong believer in treating objects with respect and letting them fulfil their purposes, and then either repurposing them or giving them decent burials - don't just throw things away. I see we've already got a Free Council Moros (hi CurvyKitten!), but I think we'd have sufficiently different focuses that we wouldn't get in each other's way too much. He's following the Dreamspeaker legacy.

The second is a Guardian Obrimos who specializes in media and Internet veil-work. He makes sure videos of magic don't get onto television or YouTube. I think he's a fun concept, but I don't know how much he would have to do in a general Consilium setting.

The third is a blatant fetish bait Obrimos Arrow Hanged Man submissive, using pain and suffering as a pathway to enlightenment. He may or may not be a bit over-the-top, I don't know.

What's your feeling on Legacies, anyway? I like them a lot for their flavour, but I understand if the extra power they provide might be unbalancing in a system-light game.
If you're such an iconoclast, where were you when we trashed Constantinople?

Caehlim

Sorry I've been a bit slow to respond, in the midst of moving house and I have to attend a friend's wedding today.

Xurtan, and Hopefox, still definitely open and I'd love to have you both with us.

Good question Xurtan, I can't believe I didn't mention awakenings. Here's a quick, me rambling post, I'll write up a clearer one soon.

Awakening is a very intense and profound experience, largely it is the defining experience of a mage's life. Metaphysically, you have a leap of insight and epiphany so powerful that it propels your soul across an infinite void of dark malevolent energies and eldrich lovecraftian horrors that lies between our world and the Supernal Realms that are the source of all magic. No one truly knows exactly what triggers an awakening, and they are still somewhat mysterious. Often they are linked with occult experimentation, philosophical pondering, intense emotion or needing another way out of some situation so badly that your soul makes that leap.

When it happens, you experience one of two possible manifestations. Either you have a complete out of body experience, travelling fully to the other realm described for your path or you wander around this world doing strange things "hallucinating" deep symbolic meaning into everything and acting all crazy to simulate being in that other world. Whichever path you're on, you are drawn through that world of magic towards an ancient tower. Once you reach that tower, you prove yourself to it in some regard and it opens up for you. Walking in, you understand that you have to write your name on the wall next to the names of hundreds/thousands of others. That act creates a symbolic link between you and that world of magic, allowing you to use magic whenever you like. You return to our world, and no one (barring certain legendary figures that may or may not be true) has ever managed to find a way back to the Supernal Realms for a second visit.

Each awakening is entirely unique and individual but it has those elements in common. It also depends what your path is, as that determines which world you went through. Mastigos is a very interesting one, as it is a realm of torture, demons and horror but rather than being intended to destroy visitors the realm attempts to rebuild, inspire and heal through it's abuses. As such many Mastigos are a little strange.

An example Mastigos awakening I ran for a new player in a mage game once was. The character found themselves standing at the start of a long road, stretching through dark and scary woods to reach a distant tower. The road was built out of golden paving stones of different sizes, each one marked with a rune. Several of the stones were silver and staring at them, he realized that he could recognize those runes and the runes on the silver stones each described a form of physical or emotional pain that he had experienced in his life. It took him longer but he was able to recognize the golden stones runes as describing forms of pain that he hadn't ever experienced.

He could tread safely on the silver stones, but whenever he stepped onto a golden stone he experienced whatever form of pain was described all compressed into a single moment, which turned that stone silver again. He made his way along the road, carefully trying to decide which stones to step on in order to reach his destination, trying to choose which forms of pain to endure and strategize the best path as he went along. He even chose some out of curiosity, expecting to never have the chance to understand that was offered to him here, for example picking 'childbirth' as one of the stones. That was a large one which let him bypass a lot of smaller stones as well.

When he neared the end, a centaur-like demon with a lasso came from the tower and attempted to catch him with the lasso, clearly intending to drag him back over the road again to the beginning. He managed to avoid the demon's attempts though and reached the tower where he wrote his name on the wall and woke back up to the real world.

That sounds.. really, really neat actually. Mastigos definitely fits what I had in mind, and just my personality in general. *grin* The example you gave was fascinating, and I can only imagine what other things people have done with that kind of setting. I'm certainly liking the theme of this game. But yeah, that's about what I expected as far as Awakening.. I just wasn't sure. :P Consequently I figured it would be best to ask, hah. Now if I could just come up with a background. Hrm. Something to work on tonight, I suspect. Thanks for the quick response, Caehlim.

I was thinking of running a Silver Ladder Mage. Mastigos? The whole Mind Magic aspect seems like it would fit with the Silver Ladder, and Space Magic seems handy for his particular brand of politics.

Silver ladder is fun! There wouldn't be a consillium if it weren't for them, because almost everyone else is focused on something else. Since this hierarch is an Arrow, the opportunities for SL politicking when he's removed are bound to be pretty high! Also, I love Space. It is the final Frontier, and rocks my socks. Also sounds like he could get along well with Guardians and Mysterium. Your library/bookstore/artifact shop idea I like too, if it often is more of a Mysterium front. Do you mean to have it as a Mundane thing to deal with sleepers who could have things they don't know the power of, or more of a storage/tracking for the Ladder's artifacts and  information?

I've got three ideas kicking around my head at the moment.

I like! The whipping boys are probably up there on my top 3 legacies.  I like Guardian, because obvious, but yes, I agree that's more of a starting-level position. If you look over the years and picture him learning more arcana and about the world, where do you see him standing at?

At the top of his game? Ensconced in his sanctum, surrounded by monitors, watching the world unfold through a million eyes at once, and dictating what Sleepers see and don't see. Basically, beating the Panopticon at its own game.  ;) But I think I'll start with the Moros lad, as he'll be the most outwardly social of the three. I may introduce another later.

There are also the Proximus families, who are magical bloodlines connected to the Atlantean orders (mostly the Silver Ladder). There are several families, each with its own magical specialties and a curse. A Proximus has a few individual spells that he can cast, which function almost identically to Supernal Magic, but less powerfully and without Paradox.

Here's my first character submission, Scavenger, the Free Council Moros Dreamspeaker. She was originally going to be a boy, but I just loved this picture too much.

Scavenger, WIP

True Name : Tania Steele
Shadow Name : Scavenger
Age : 19
Sex : Female
Gender: Female (may change as she explores her psyche)
Classification : Mage
Relationship Status : Single

Path : Moros (Dreamspeaker)
Order : Free Council

Height : 5'7"
Weight / Body type : 150 lbs., wiry
Hair : Brown
Skin : White
Eyes : Brown
Distinguishing Features : Some tattoos of stylized machinery, and a few scars and burns
Standard Clothing : Scavenger dresses as if she lives in a charity shop - she wears T-shirts depicting bands from the 50s and pants that are decades out of date, but all apparently in mint condition.
Face Claim : TBA

Likes : Building things, repurposing things, helping people with their mechanical problems.
Dislikes : Seeing things go to waste or be forgotten, bullies.

About : Scavenger works as a car mechanic in one of the less reputable garages in San Francisco, because it is still too difficult for her to make a living through more official channels with her magic. She is very mystical and philosophical when it comes to machines, insisting on treating them as living creatures, and demanding certain rituals from people who seek her advice.

Reputation : She is known throughout SF's street racing community as having the "magic touch" when it comes to cars, and is starting to develop a similar reputation for computers in the hacking community. Among the mages of the Consilium, she is known as a Dreamspeaker, one in close communion with the Astral Planes, which makes her useful, but also damn weird. More than one mage has heard her talking to invisible "machine gods", and seen her performing bizarre rituals in her workshop.

Sexuality : Probably straight, but Scavenger is currently a virgin, so she's not entirely sure.
Player Sexual On's and Offs : As per profile
Character Ons : Not yet explored - she likes cock, maybe?
Character Offs : Not yet explored.

Player : HopeFox

Magical knowledge An experienced character can have up to 9 levels in the different types of magic. Younger or more inexperienced characters can be made with less. Sleepwalkers do not possess any magical knowledge at all.

Fate :
Space :
Mind : Initiate

Somehow, I'm used to becoming even more confused. :P Maybe it's a tabletop book trait they fiendishly inscribe in the bindings.. hm. I agree in that Curator will probably get along well with Mysterium and the Guardians. Mysterium, particularly. The only thing stopping him from going that route is he's too ambitious. I'm not totally sure on what direction I want to take the shop yet. But yeah, partially to deal with things the Mundanes shouldn't have. The other part of it was kind of a 'first stop' for new Mages, for information or advice, etc. I don't really know how the system works for the newbies though, so that might not fit with the lore. Going to try to get my hands on the books today. *snort*

Traditionally: The Mysterium and the Guardians are kind of at odds. Not all the time, of course, and the members can certainly interact and be friendly -- but when an object of questionable usage comes up, the Mysterium is like: "It belongs in a museum!" and the Guardians are like: "We need to destroy it." The Order's key philosophies are almost opposite in that way.

Not to say a member of the other orders couldn't try to skirt the line between the two, but it might be difficult to not pick a side if the two orders come head to head.

@HopeFox: Mare has a Demanse, which I believe is required for any kind of Astral Journey -- I'd be happy to work out some past interactions for Mare and Scavenger to have giving her access in the past.
Like what you see? I am currently looking for new plots!

Not to mention that the Guardians often come into conflict with the Silver Ladder and the Free Council on the subject of encouraging Sleepers to Awaken. The Ladder and the Council are both pretty keen on awakening as many people as possible (they just disagree on whether to use Atlantean or modern methods), whereas the Guardians are much more conservative about bringing Sleepers anywhere near magic.

That would be great! Now, as a Dreamspeaker, Scavenger can access the Astral Plane without a Demesne or the need for prolonged meditation (if Caehlim approves of that), but doing it from a Demesne is bound to be safer, and they could go on Astral Journeys together from time to time, which is much safer. I'd like that.

Running a magic shop is a pretty good plan, I think:

  • It gives you a central place in the occult community, which includes Atlantean mages, hedge mages, other supernatural creatures (such as Bone Shadow and Ithaeur werewolves and Crone vampires) and mundane mortal dabblers. That gives you a lot of privileged information, and may let you ward off some kinds of trouble before they start.
  • It is entirely likely that a newly awakened mage might go to a "magic shop" to find out what the hell is going on.
  • It can help you spread your particular brand of cultural magic throughout the community, if your magic works along cultural lines as many Silver Ladder magics do.

The downside is that it makes you obvious to mortal mage hunters, Seers and Banishers. Some hunters will be dissuaded as long as you can put on a proper "oh, I know magic isn't real, I just sell trinkets to idiots" façade for them, but that won't fool other mages.

That sounds fantastic actually, HopeFox. *grin* Magic shop it is! I like the idea of having something of a central place in the community, and it fits nicely with his Silver Ladder plans. It gives him an excellent place to network from, gather information, and everything else. I'm not too sure what you mean by the cultural line magic, however. I have the core rulebook and the Silver Ladder book, so I'll go through those tonight when I get a chance. Although the fact there are an additional.. 26 books on top of that makes me pause. :P

I don't particularly mind being more obvious to the less desirables. It's an excuse for intrigue!

By "cultural" magic, I just mean the traditional magical practices of a particular human culture, religion or mythology. It's not uncommon for mages, particularly of the Silver Ladder, to pursue paths like Jewish kabbalah, Muslim Sufism, various kinds of Christian or Hindu mysticism, or the traditional magics of many, many different cultures around the world. They often see these traditions as containing a kernel of Supernal truth, as much as is possible for Sleeper traditions to contain. Others, of course, reject all Sleeper mysticism as a product of the Lie, and insist on a purely Atlantean approach to magic and Awakening.

Ah, that makes much more sense. Thank you. That sounds very intriguing, actually. I could see where that would be fun to bring into play, and it really does fit the whole character. Also gah, the core book alone is over 400 pages. This is going to be a busy night. -_-

EDIT: Possible final sheet:

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
True Name : James Evvard
Shadow Name : Curator
Age : 34
Sex : Male
Gender: Male
Classification : Mage
Relationship Status : Single

Path : Mastigos
Order : Silver Ladder

Height : 5'9"
Weight / Body type : Muscular, but he's no bodybuilder.
Hair : Black and kept short
Skin : White
Eyes : Blue
Distinguishing Features :
Standard Clothing : Rarely seen out of full three-piece suit, he prefers dark and light greys rather than blacks. Never pinstripe, or plaid.
Face Claim : David Gandy

Likes : Being in control, secrets, favors owed to him, books, artifacts, anyone that respects magic
Dislikes : Blatant Politicians, people that know more than they should, anyone that has a hold on him, perpetually loud people, anyone that dislikes books, drama

About : Growing up, Curator was a smart, if fairly manipulative child. He knew what he wanted and how to go about getting it. Of course, with both of his parents being high profile lawyers.. well, that was expected. Working long hours, his parents often left him alone.. which suited Curator just fine. He enjoyed the quiet, enjoyed books and reading. What he loved most was collecting things, whether it be books, people, trinkets or information. Especially any that seemed otherworldly, or connected to the Occult. He had many acquaintances, but few friends. He had little interest in gaining any either, either; he primarily only spoke to others when he wanted something. He learned early the power of networking. Over the years, he's cultivated a 'friendlier' mask, but he still comes off as somewhat haughty. These days, he runs a well known (in certain circles, at least) magic shop. A place to buy and sell artifacts and ingredients, to trade information, and a good place for newer mages to get their feet wet before they settle fully into the general drama and politics. Keeping anything important in the back, the 'front' of the store is a safe haven for the Mundane 'magics'.

Reputation : Well known and well trusted, no one has ever questioned that he is suited to the Silver Ladder. Constantly networking, many seek him out for information or to find specific items of worth. The more cunning are wary of his politics and the way he moves through people, always attempting to gain their favor and trust. In general, he is simply viewed as a helpful member of mage society. Perhaps as an odd 'collector'.

Hooray! I'm still working on Scavenger, mind you - I might juggle her Arcana around a little bit before it's finalised, and I'm still adding background and things.

QuoteThere's also now an Out of Character chat thread as well.

Excellent! I'll start talking character stuff there. Do you also want to make a separate thread for GM announcements and questions for the GM, if the OOC chat thread is primarily for players organising things amongst themselves?

QuoteJust finally, thankyou everyone for helping eachother out and chatting about the lore while I was busy over the last day or two. It's great to see.

You're welcome! I just hope I'm not overstepping my bounds in doing so - please feel free to say "I know that's what the books say, but that's not how we're doing it" at any time.

Oh, another question - will there be opportunities to learn more Arcana dots later? There are some Mind 3 or 4 spells that Scavenger will need to be able to cast later as she becomes a more experienced and important envoy to the Astral Plane, but I don't want her to start with too much Mind right now, when there are other Mind-focused characters in the game (and I don't want to lower her Matter or Death to buy more Mind yet either).

True Name : Cynthia Penbrooke
Shadow Name : Bouncer
Age : 22
Sex : Female
Gender: More or less female: she hasn't put much thought into it
Classification : Mage
Relationship Status : Unlikely to settle down with a single person

Path : Acanthus
Order : Adamantine Arrows

Height : 5'6"
Weight / Body type : Athletic, C-cup breasts
Hair : Blonde
Skin : Fair
Eyes : Turquoise
Distinguishing Features : Bouncer never wears any jewelry beyond the occasional hair tie.
Standard Clothing : Varies between utilitarian athletic and elegant feminine
Face Claim : Lena Nicole

Likes : Parties, friends, makeup when she feels like putting it on (which is rare), dancing, being praised for her awesome abilities (even when it's pure luck), having fun
Dislikes : People being mean.  She's had to deal enough with it herself and has been known to step in on other people's affairs (which is how she ended up with the Arrows to begin with)

About : Bouncer isn't completely dissuaded by the prospect of hard work, but she's been known to quickly lose interest in anything that didn't come easily to her.  She keeps a goodly amount of money in various investments divined through magical means, and her home has a tree with a tiny Hallow just big enough to let her prepare her spells every day.

Her preferred weapon and magical tool is a Desert Eagle .50, way too big for her but the recoil usually seems to kick up right into her target despite her "poor" aiming.  Her carefree nature doesn't really seem to change in combat; everything just seems to go right for her and wrong for everyone else when her talents are needed.  When absolutely necessary, she's also been known to throw a bit of Celestial Fire.

Reputation : Every Path has its stereotypes.  For the Acanthi, the stereotype is the head-in-the-clouds boy/girl who never takes life seriously, never had to work a day in his/her life and just seems to glide by, to the envy of everyone.  She got her shadow name Bouncer not from any sort of profession but for her tendency to simply bounce through life without a care or concern.

The Adamantine Arrows works best for her not only because of her combat prowess but because she tends to throw herself into other peoples' problems in the name of trying to help.

Sexuality : Bisexual but with a slight preference for females
Player Sexual On's and Offs : https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=102977.0
Character Ons : Toys, restraints, being chased and sought after, being held and cared for, being told that she's a good girl while she's having an orgasm
Character Offs : Anal sex, pain, playing hard to get (when you're actually interested)

Player : AndyZ

True Name : Jonathon Prescott

Path : Mastigos

Height : 6'3"
Weight / Body type : Heavy Build
Hair : Dark Brown
Skin : Fair/Lightly tanned
Eyes : Blue
Distinguishing Features :
Standard Clothing : Business Suit
Face Claim :

Likes : Solving mysteries, gathering more knowledge, social activism, cultural pursuits.
Dislikes : Arrogance, deliberate destruction of knowledge & artifacts.

About : Jonathon Prescott from the earliest recollections was someone who asked questions about events, places and people, seemingly never happy with the rote answers given by most people. He would seek the answers to his own questions, which at times got the focal point of his investigations rather annoyed at the very least. But as he grew older, he became more interested in the aspect of justice that could be rendered by those same secrets and discoveries. His going into law was a given, though many suspected he would become a Journalist. He forewent that idea because the editors were too strict for his liking, while in the field of law, he had the means to set his own path, even if that too was somewhat limited.

Most of his money made from his work is spent on procuring various manuscripts and artifacts that he keeps in a personal museum. All the items he has on show are perfectly mundane, and have no connection with the arcane, occult or Supernal, except for those known to be false, or wrong to the point where no real information can be derived from them. He has another store of tomes and artifacts that are, to some degree or other, connected with the Arcane/Occult/Supernal.

Reputation : In the greater public, he is known as a well versed debater of the Law, but he will only take on cases that he desires to work on.

As a Mysterium, he holds true to the general impression Mages have for the order, and does his best to work within the rules dictated, but is not afraid to side step them if he can get away with it.

I'm interested if there is still space. I'll need to do a lot of reading (of what you put up), though, as I only know the basics of OWoD Mage, and nothing about the new.

Ryven

I wish I could play in this but I have a horrible track record with group games.

Lockepick

@Ryven: I wish you'd play too! I would posit that usually group games have a horrible track record at you -- not the other way around.
Like what you see? I am currently looking for new plots!

All of my image links were previously photobucket and broken -- I'm fixing them as I use the avatars again, or for current games. Please let me know if there is something that needs updating!

Love to have you join us, but it's entirely up to you. You're definitely welcome though. :D

Still space if you're interested.

Well, as you can see, the following is still work in progress, but I wanted to get my name and the idea down for people to have a look at, and for our GM to start thinking about how to (ab)use.

Awesome, let me know once it's finished but everything looks good so far.

Well, I have done as much as I can think of. So, as far as I am concerned, he's finished. I edited the post a few up from this.

I shall wait for the GM's green light, then I shall start making connections with other people, places, etc.

Bulldog looks fine, you can move him over to the approved characters forum if you'd like.

Do you have a picture for him?

I love mage, I am totally willing to make a character for this! Paging Dr. Angelo!

True Name : Erik Seiler
Shadow Name : Angelo
Age : 35
Sex : Male
Gender: It's complicated
Classification : Mage
Relationship Status : Single

Path : Mastigo
Order : Mysterium

Height : 5' 11.5"
Weight / Body type : 212 lbs. O type
Hair : Black
Skin : Light
Eyes : Blue
Distinguishing Features : His hair has a distinctive blonde spot that he usually hides in some fashion (magically or otherwise). He also has a bad habit of biting his nails.
Standard Clothing : Bulk-buy economy t-shirts and pants, likely from Wal-Mart
Face Claim : (Uh, let's wait til I find a decent picture)

Likes : Aiding others, reading good books, writing, and a good cup of tea.
Dislikes : People hurting others for no reason (stop taking my skills for granted, asshole!), and hates people who condemn from ignorance.

About : Angelo was born brilliant. He blew away every class set before him, often having to be taught material from higher grades just to keep from being bored. Upon reaching college, he decided to go into med school. At some point during said med school, he Awakened, although he's rather mum of the details.

After graduating near the top of his class (magic studies take a bit of time away, after all), he came to San Francisco and set up shop, swiftly becoming very skilled in dealing with any kind of wound or ailment that entered his hospital-almost like he's magic or something. Well, he actually IS, but he's not about to say.

Reputation : Mortal Rep: Well known among his coworkers as probably the best doctor there. He's rather humble about it, though.

Magic Rep: His mortal job leaves him with little time to spend on Mysterium business, but the Mysterium does enjoy having another person who can patch up wounds when something goes wrong.

Sexuality : Pansexual
Player Sexual On's and Offs : The only rule is no NC.
Character Ons : Romance, intelligence, and most other vanilla.
Character Offs : Pain, humiliation, anything of that nature is a right turn off.

Player : Angiejuusan

Angelo looks great, someone who is able to heal others is often quite useful to a consillium. You can move them over to the approved characters thread if you'd like.

I've been a little slow getting things started here, but I'm working on setting up the IC threads at the moment.

Hm, I've always wanted to dip my toes in Mage... I might have a look at slipping a character in for this if there are still spaces... :) There's alot to read through, but if I'm good to make a character, I suppose I could slip some time aside for it :)

Absolutely, we've still got space.

If you'd like any help with understanding the setting or building a character feel free to ask me any questions you have. I'm happy to help you build a character.

Okay, so I'm looking at officially starting this game off tomorrow. However this doesn't mean that the recruitment is closed, for anyone considering joining you're welcome to get a character in after things start up and we'll introduce you into the ongoing events.

Joining in in medias res (hey guys, I know Latin!) is practically a World of Darkness trope.  ;D
