The Crab are known to be very gentle and loving to their wives.

Most of them, sure. I enjoy going against type.

My O&Os Peruse at your doom.

So I make a A&A thread but do I put it here?  No.  Of course not.

Also, I now come with Kung-Fu Blog action.  Here:  Where I talk about comics and all sorts of gaming

Has anyone ever played a member of the Unicorn Clan? I never have, but I think it'd be fun. :-) I love how they don't care what the other clans think of their "barbarian" ways. And being able to eat meat now and then would be a nice change. ;D

One of the players in my City of Lies tabletop game did. We had a Unicorn (Moto family, no less) Bushi, a Crane Kakita duelist (who unfortunately moved country about 1/3 of the way through the campaign), a Dragon Shukenja, a Dragon Kitsuki investigator, a Phoenix loremaster type monk, and a Wasp Tsuruchi bushi. I also NPCed a Scorpion *ahem* Courtier, who seemed to have a rather wide variety of skills. She belonged to another player who had to drop out of the campaign just after we started.

One of the more fun things with her was she enjoyed cooking, and took it on herself to cook while the party was travelling to Ryoko Owari (and getting to know each other). You have all these samurai sitting round the campfire, trying to think of an honourable way to refuse Bayushi-san's cooking night after night  ;D

She never had any intention of poisoning them, but it was certainly fun messing with their heads  >:)

Over the course of the game they also picked up a few NPC retainers, an Otaku battle maiden, another young unicorn just past his gempuku, and a Scorpion shukenja, Soshi Yuri, known far and wide for being 'much beloved of the fire kami' (or impolitely, as a deranged pyromaniac  ;D ). You've no idea just how glad the Soshi were in being able to palm her off onto the Magistrates, so she could be someone else's problem for a change.

I might be tempted to give the City of Lies another go here, but my schedule is somewhat erratic due to work. Running a premade campaign might be easier for me than relying on my fairly non existant muse as well.

I also just got the new Second City campaign, but haven't read more than the intro to that yet.

But I wonder how one would react to being commanded by his lord to marry a Scorpion wife, particularly if he already has a dislike for the Scorpion (and what other clan doesn't?). I don't think he would necessarily brutalize her, but I don't think he would trust her, at least not right away. A good mix of forceful lust and tenderness would be lovely. ;)

Gosh, your campaigns sounded awesome! :D I love the image of them politely refusing the Scorpion's cooking. ;D It sounds like you had a well-rounded group! I bet the pyromaniac Scorpion was a bit of a handful! ;)

Hmmm... I'm afraid I've never played City of Lies before. My group's adventures were mostly freeform. The title alone perks my interest, though! :-)

Arranged marriage story lines like that are great ^^
Besides I don't think Rokungan is a place were pousal abuse is talked about at all.

I have positive experience with premade cmpaigns even if they sometimes have brainfarts and make too many assumptions about what players will do. Are the Lo5r ones any good?

Btw, is there some sort of Errata or FAQ for the game?

I was reading the Asoko Inquistors advanced school in the great clans, and noticed that non Shujenga's gain ability to make melee attacks as simple actions when it already a requirment for the school.

I love arranged marriage story lines! :D

And I agree. I think the average Rokugani would rather suffer in silence than risk shaming their spouse and themselves by exposing any abuse. However, it says in "Secrets of the Scorpion" that the Scorpion Clan is quick to punish any suspected of abusing one of their own, and as we know, their punishments are often unpleasant. >:) But it's not really abuse if it feels good, right? ;)

The Shosuro family run the Scorpions shinobi school. Everyone knows that ninja are just a peasent superstition, bandits using the ninja myth to prey on the gullible.

It was a good campaign. We ran it for about 3 years, give or take.

It's a 1st ed campaign. The players are newly appointed Imperial magistrates, sent to the second city of the Scorpion clan, with a two-fold mission. 1 - Find out who killed the previous Magistrate (who was ambushed in a carrying chair, had about a half dozen spears pushed through it and set on fire), and 2 - Wipe out the Illegal opium trade. Ryoko Owari is the centre for opium production in the entire Empire. Medicinal opium good, recreational opium bad.

City of Lies is the only one I've run, and I think it worked really well. There is one core story plot, and then lots of side plots that the GM can take or leave. I used most of them, which is why the campaign ran for 3 years. They actually solved the main story line about 6 months before the end of the campaign, but were enjoying it so much they didn't want to stop til they'd solved all the mysteries :)

Probably. Check AEGs L5R website ... even if it does seem more aimed towards the CCG than the RPG.

Actually, the Scorpion Shosuro family run the 'Shinobi' school.  Not Ninja.  The Ninja are, if I remember correctly, of the...  Lying Dark?  They're supernatural creatures tied to a malevolent force that isn't the Dark God, or part of his retinue.  There was an incident, again I may be remembering this wrong, some time after the Coup, where The Dark tried to take over the Empire.

I remember a Campaign book with it as the main threat.  Way of... Shadow?

According to a couple of local card tournament players (not a reputable source) this Ninja threat was a poke at Mr. Wick's adamant refusal to have Shinobi/Ninja in either game (CCG or RPG), despite the Scorpion easily fitting that mold at the time.

Also, why is Pumpkin Seed's little Scorpion always running?  Does she know something...?  Hmm...

Ah, I keep forgetting the in-game differences between shinobi and ninjas. In either case, it would be wise to deny that they exist, at least to the other clans. ;)

Probably hard enough these days, but I think drivethroughrpg might have it in PDF.

I'd only advise buying a copy if you plan to run it. Reading the storyline would spoil it if you ever wanted to play it.

I've run it once as GM, played in it as a PC before that, and spoke to another guy at a con who'd also run it. All 3 campaigns were very different.

As a quick aside, anyone else familiar with Qin? It's another oriental RPG, but the flavour is wuxia / mythic China, rather than the samurai setting of L5R.

Well duty to the clan and what not I am reminded of a Chuda story that AEG was doing where a spouse of a member of the Crab was actually an undercover bloodspeaker (Maho User corrupting sort of magic) They ended up where the Chuda was cursing the fact that the Crab treated her so well she was starting to feel some back for him. But honestly a Crab wouldn't think that the Scorpion would be right there to kill him or anything and would treat her just as well after all there is another Duty a Crab has to do. Make Fodder babies for the wall.

Also now the Scorpion and the Crab are going to be much friendlier what with the Scorpion Wall being erected with the help of the Crab training the Scorpion and the Kaiu engineers.

Aw, that's kind of sweet! :D

He might not assume she's going to kill him, but, depending on the individual Crab, he might not trust her a whole lot. Especially if he had some past bad blood with the Scorpion Clan. And there's nothing to say that a Samurai won't force himself upon his wife now and then, no matter which clan she comes from. Oh, I'm sure they'll have plenty of babies in time. ;)

I like the tension of each spouse not fully trusting the other initially, only to grow closer with time. :-)

Perhaps their marriage is meant to further cement the ties between the two clans. :-) Still, the Crab Samurai needn't be exactly happy about it.

Songbird think of it more how a soldier respects another for the things that they have been through. The Crab will finally have someone who know what defending against the Shadowlands is like and this particular clan has Political Clout I think this recent change will be interesting to see how it develops.

Personally though I am a Mantis man.

BE, remember the 'Two Bokken', thing I had on my Dragon.  The original incident was with a Crab Samurai, Hida Tetsu-Jin.

For those who won't know, Tetsu was let go from the wall (temporarily) to 'become' more skilled in the arts of politics, after a certain incident involving a Daimyo's daughter, her Saumrai-Ko bodyguard, two bokken, some whip cream and an orange.

Just don't ask where he got the Orange.

Unlike most Crab, he favoured the Ono, rather than the tetsubo.  He was also know to be the second tallest of the Hida of the time, which was before the Scorpion Coup.  I miss him he was fun.

CarnivalOfTheGoat

Hello everyone!

Tch, all this talk of Crabs, Dragons, Cranes and Unicorns!

I actually only played Lo5R once, but I had a Hare, a would-be witch-hunter and a bit of a self-deprecating clown. Somewhat based on Heihachi (of the "Wood Cutting School" ;D ) in Seven Samurai.

I agree that the game lends itself very, very well to court intrigues! The only other I have seen which came close was Lace and Steel.

And system games are troublesome to get rolling in PbP, I agree. The only ones I have seen work were those where all members from the beginning were familiar with the game and its background, and avid fans, and worked/played well together.

So much can go wrong, but when it goes right...Ooooooh! :)

My O/Os. My A/As.
Games I seek:
Savage Worlds of My Little Pony <- Just what it says. Free supplement for SW. (Or any other MLP RP!!! :D)
Eclipse Phase <- Posthuman grit SF, open source, downloadable from their web site. VERY deep worldbuilding.
Cold City <- Espionage meets the Lovecraftian supernatural. Allies in post-war Berlin chasing down the results of secret Nazi experiments
a|state <- Post-apocalyptic sort-of-steampunk, sort-of-high tech roleplay in a massive, decaying, broken-down city-state.
