Karen watched Samuel as he spoke.  She tilted her head and frowned in concern.  He seemed to be listening to something.  She reached out and put her hands on his shoulders, trying to ground him.  "Samuel.  Focus, alright?  Listen to my voice and focus on me.  What's going on?  What are you hearing?" she asked, concerned he may be hallucinating.  In any case, the teen was clearly having a problem focusing.  Karen was concerned that perhaps his position as a teacher was overwhelming him; that it was too much to handle and was causing mental problems from him.  Handling so many students was a lot to ask of someone his age; hell, she had a problem with it herself, and she at least had some experience.  She watched him worriedly as she waited to see if he could respond to her, or if she needed to find someone else to help.

(Going ahead and moving on to morning with the rest of you guys since I don't have anything else to do during sunday night.)

Privacy...you never realize how important it is until it's gone. The sudden realization of what the rest of the year was going to be like in this school came barreling down on Jessica when she awoke in the morning. She was going to have to share everything; the room, the bathroom, and not to mention the communal microwave located in the common room at the end of the hall. It all just made her even more hopelessly homesick. She wanted her own bed back, her own bathroom, and gosh dang it, her own microwave. It wasn't like she could just not take a shower every morning though, so she quietly packed up her things and a change of clothes and made her way down the hall to the bathroom.

After dealing with the alien experience of going about her morning routine in the company of complete strangers, Jessica makes her way down to the cafeteria to get an early breakfast. She definitely wasn't used to getting up early enough for breakfast; it was usually hard enough to get her to wake up in time for school much less breakfast. The anxiety she was feeling did a great job of keeping her awake all night though. Jessica takes pretty much one of everything offered to her and finds a table where she can be alone- not because she was feeling shy but because the lack of sleep left her feeling more like throwing a cup of coffee in someone's face rather than making polite conversation.

Breakfast went by uneventfully. As she finished, Jessica pulled out her cellphone, staring at her reflection in the black screen and frowning at how terrible she looked. With a sigh, she turned it on to check the time. 6:45 already? Oh great...she had to be in class in fifteen minutes. And not just any class...but math class. Whose cruel idea was it to have each new day greet her with a heaping pile of that crap? Just another lovely thing to add onto the growing list of reasons why she hated this place. Jessica sighs in disgust as she grabs her backpack and throws it onto her shoulder. It was going to be a long day.

When Sam didn't respond, Karen frowned softly and sighed, moving and slipping under one of his arms, putting the arm over her shoulders.  "Jake, get his other arm, would you?  We need to get him to the infirmary," she said.  When the student moved and had Sam's other arm, she moved with both of them, getting Sam to the infirmary.  There was staff there now, and, getting him on a bed, she described what she'd observed going on with him, then, with the assurances of the staff that they would take care of Sam, she nodded and left the infirmary with Jake.  She sighed, concern evident on her features for a moment before she looked at Jake and gave a soft smile.  "Come on," she said, walking back to Sam's class with him.  It was a good thing her first period was a planning period.

She walked into the physics class, holding her head high to take authority over the students.  Her eyes went to the blackboard, but she made no comment and soon disregarded it as she turned to the students.  "Suffice it to say that your class has turned into a study period for the day.  Please study quietly, whatever subject you choose to study.  You may get into groups to study, so long as you are studying the same subject.  Again, quietly, please," she said.  She nodded to the students that they could get to it, then began to make a sign for the rest of Sam's classes for that day to put on the door; that students were to report to the library for a study period in lieu of physics class for the day.

Well, on the bright side, the school day was half over. That's what Jessica kept telling herself as she stood in line, her boredom doing little to help keep her tired eyes open. She mentally entertained the idea of learning how to use her ability while sleeping so she could get some rest during these boring classes. The first day was always so boring anyway, just refreshers and introductions, it's not like she'd miss anything. Maybe she could talk Kimmi into being a test subject?

The girl scanned over the crowd in the cafeteria, looking for either Kimmi or that guy from the other day that she was supposed to recruit. Not being able to find either one of her "friends" she sat at one of the less occupied tables, her cheek resting against her hand and her eyes falling shut as she dips her spoon into the chili.

She actually dozes off in that awkward position for several minutes before suddenly snapping awake. She needed to look for that boy from the infirmary, she told Kimmi she would. She sighs as she frowns down at her spoon, swirling the soupy chili out of boredom. She had no idea how she was going to make it to midnight at this pace but there was no way she was going to let sleep get in the way of her curiosity.

Paint stained her face and her clothes.  But it was never anything she'd minded before, and it wasn't something she minded now.  Even if other students were stopping and staring, she paid them no heed, didn't seem to notice the looks or murmurs at all.  She went through the line, looking at the selection, before spotting something definitely familiar to her palette.  Chicken and dumplings.  Hoping that it was flavorful, and not a pasty mess, Pen requested the meal and took the offered bowl, as well as a couple of rolls, then turned to find a table.

Most of the tables were crowded.  It seemed the school was quickly dividing into little cliques, people quickly filling into the niches of the social ladder.  Penelope had always been one to walk to the beat of her own drum; she didn't really fit with any one social group.  She looked around and, seeing a girl that appeared to be dozing off over a bowl of chili, she sat down across from her and a couple of seats down.  Her eyes were on the other girl as she began to eat her own food, concerned that the girl was going to tip forward and splatter into her chili any minute.  But soon the girl's eyes snapped open and Pen looked away, now minding her own business as she continued to eat.

Jake looked back toward the Physics class where he hoped his laptop still remained before he complied in helping Miss Schmidt escort Professor Ervin to the Infirmary. Once there, he couldn't wait to get out. He left as soon as he got the chance and quickly made his way back to the Physics classroom. He looked to the front row where he'd been sitting. Thank god it was still there. He went down to get it, intent on leaving, when he saw Miss Schmidt come in. He sat down briefly, listened to what she had to say, then when he saw her go for some materials, he got up and left the class, intent on going to the Cafeteria to get something to eat. He was starved!

Jessica starts stretching, a yawn partly escaping from her mouth before she catches sight of the girl sitting across from her. Geez, where did she come from? Jessica scrambles to cover her mouth with her hand as she stifles the rest of her yawn now that she wasn't alone. Her eyes blink wearily as she looks across the table, not even bothering to be subtle as she studied the other girl. Oh lord, she looked like the stereotypical quirky girl in every one of those "nerdy girl gets popular" romantic comedies. Jessica smiles and lets out a quiet chuckle at her own thoughts, finally straightening up, a hint of red on her cheek where she rested against her hand. "Art class is a bitch, huh?"

Samuel was so caught up in his new found ability that he barely registered being escorted to the infirmary. Once there the various staff and nurses that worked there, literally bombarded him with questions. None of which he answered in the slightest. For about an hour or two the staff wasn't sure what to do with Samuel, eventually they just let him go, although he didn't show much interest in his surroundings. He was just learning so much, so fast. Everything from knowledge gleamed from the minds of other teachers, to the dirty secrets of the students. He silently walked through the hallways, lost in thought, or thoughts. When he suddenly found himself in the cafeteria, he wasn't hungry, and all the noise, physical and mental, was making it hard to concentrate, so he decided to leave. Just as he was about to turn around, he spotted Jessica Reynolds. Instantly he gravitated over to her, hoping that she could give him what he wanted. Samuel sat right beside Jessica in one fluid motion. "Hello, Jessica" he said quickly, not evening noticing the other girl. His mind was completely focused on Jessica, curious as whether or not she would help him. Given their previous encounter, the odds were against him.

Pen blinked, her sienna brown eyes coming up from the chicken and dumplings in front of her.  "Art class?" she spoke, tilting her head.  What made this girl think she'd been in art class?  She looked down and noted that, as was a norm for her, she was dotted with paint.  Ah, of course.  She shook her head, though.  "Haven't been to art yet," she said.  "I was painting my..." she started, but cut off as the physics teacher was suddenly seated next to the girl across from her, his full attention on her.  Pen tilted her head, curious.  What sort of relationship was this?  She took another bite of her food, watching with interest.

Jessica's face fell forward into her hands and her shoulders slumped when Mr. Ervin sat down next to her. With the way today was going, she wouldn't be surprised if the roof decided to collapse on top of her just so life could make sure the day ended on a high note. Her hands slowly slide down her face as she lets out a frustrated sigh, looking visibly annoyed at the presence of the teacher seated next to her. "You know the teachers sit over there, right?" Jessica gestures across the room with a sweep of her hand to the other side of the cafeteria where all the staff were sitting. She turns slightly in her seat to face Mr. Ervin, immediately regretting the decision when her eyes fall upon that same intense expression on his face from yesterday. God...she really wished he'd stop that. Jessica groans in dissatisfaction as she shakes her head in disbelief. "What do you want?" Her voice was flat with a hint of frustration mixed in for good measure. She was really beginning to wonder if something wasn't wrong with this guy...it didn't help that he wouldn't stop looking at her like that.

Samuel could almost feel Jessica's thoughts of disgust in his head, intriguing. "You don't like the way I look at you, eh?" And with that his face went blank, emotionless. "And what I want is to know how you control your ability, I can't seem to stop the thoughts from coming in, yours included." He cocked his head as if listening. "I would never guessed that you were taken by the government, nor that you were used to interrogate people of interest." He looked over at Jessica. "And nothing is wrong with me Jessica, not in the slightest."

She wasn't sure how but Mr. Ervin had become even creepier. His intense staring and constantly studying her like some kind of lab experiment was unsettling...but somehow his blank and emotionless face was even more so. How does someone become this terrible at dealing with people?

Jessica listens halfheartedly as he talks about her ability. She really didn't care and she had no idea why he even thought she would. Then he brings up her most sensitive of memories...experiences she had buried, hidden away deep in her mind. She always told herself that those weren't her memories...it wasn't her that did those things.

Her mouth hangs open slightly in shock, a fire building in her stomach as her thoughts turned toward anger. She stands up, her eyes narrowed and looking down at him with anger. Her teeth nearly chattered in her mouth and her hand shook slightly as she pointed accusingly toward Mr. Ervin. "You steal my powers, put me in the infirmary, and then you just start going through all of my thoughts? And after all that you want me to help you?!" Jessica stopped briefly, an incredulous look on her face as she nearly growled in frustration. Her whole body was shaking at this point as tears collected in the corner of her eyes. Her mouth opens briefly as she prepares to start telling Mr. Ervin where he can shove his request for help but all she can manage is an uneven sob...her rage was quickly transforming into something else.

Everyone was looking at this point but she didn't care. Jessica slowly turns away from Mr. Ervin, her drooping posture betraying her emotions. She lifts up her lunch tray with little enthusiasm as she prepares to leave, a sniff escaping from her as she struggles to hold it all back.

As far as Sam could tell, he couldn't feel any true emotion, his mind just simply couldn't do it. It was his one major flaw, his one problem. But something about Jessica made all of that.... irrelevant. That's the best way he could put it. As he watched her hold back tears, he suddenly felt sorry for her, and regretted what he had said. He didn't know why, this emotion was unknown to him, he had never experienced it before. He didn't know what to do, then he realized. He knew exactly what he should do. He stood up swiftly and walked in front of her. He softly grabbed her arm, and pictured all of her pain disappearing, instantly gone, all those horrible memories gone, nothing but happiness. And that's exactly what happened. Subconsciously his mind also retrieved all of his thoughts from her mind, and studied whatever it could about her ability. He didn't know why he took such extreme measures to rid her of her pain, he just felt that it was right. Eventually he let go of her, and backed away. He still felt sympathy, and sorrow. He couldn't will the emotions away, they just stayed. He looked into her eyes, with true emotion on his face. "I.... I'm sorry.... I didn't mean to...." And just like that, as if a switch was flipped, he was back to his emotionless self. Which greatly disturbed him. "I....I..... need to go." His face went blank again. And with that he left the cafeteria, confused at what he had just done.

Jake entered the cafeteria, put in his earbuds, and picked up his food. All the while he was thinking, trying to come up with what had happened during the `gap’ in his memory. Maybe the school had it recorded on all the cameras Shaw had everywhere…? And what was up with Ervin? And could Miss Schmidt be trusted…?
He started walking blindly to get a seat. He saw Jessica seated at a table with a girl he didn’t really recognize. Oh, I’ll sit with Jessica. Maybe we can talk about how I totally saved her ass and caught holy hell for it! Waitaminute… Who’s that sitting with her…? Oh, nevermind, it’s Ervin! He quickly changed direction and began heading off toward the other side of the cafeteria.
Then he saw heads turn to look back in that direction. He turned around. Jessica was now standing, and appeared visibly upset. Well now I have to go back over there. And he did.
By the time he got there, Ervin had headed off, appearing not to notice him. Jake stopped and stood there, looking at Jessica, a bit of a stupid look on his face.

Jessica nearly spilled her lunch into the floor when she violently pulls her arm away from Mr. Ervin. She sits the tray back down where she got it and focuses back on the teacher. "Why can't you just leave me alone?!" the anger was back and his quick exit soon left her without someone to focus it on...at least until Jake walked over with that big stupid grin on his face. "You! I almost broke my neck when I tripped over your little surprise this morning! And how do you even know where I live?!" Her hands find themselves on her hips as she slowly tries to calm her breathing, not even sure why she was angry in the first place. As her eyes focus on him, waiting for his reaction, her eyes catch sight of those white cords leading to his ears. "Are you even listening to me?!"

Samuel was... upset, or at least his version of it. That brief sense of emotion back in the cafeteria, left him... rattled. And he still didn't quite understand what he just done to Jessica. He knew what he had said somehow hurt her, emotionally. He just didn't understand why. He walked the hallways slowly back to his quarters. As he rounded a corner, he nearly ran into Karen, seemingly on her way to lunch. "Hello Karen" he said distractedly, and what seemed like a hint of guilt. He swiftly brushed past her. He walked a few feet, when he felt her grab his arm, he looked back at her face, showing what look like concern. He jerked her arm off, and continued walking. He heard his name called, but he simply blocked it out. He decided to block everything out, he needed time to think, and to analyze what he had just learned of Jessica's ability.

A look of recognition flashed across Jake's face. He pulled the earbuds out of his ears and said, "Sorry, what was that...?"

Jessica folded her arms in front of her, glaring at Jake. With Mr. Ervin gone, she had settled down quite a bit but she still found herself contemplating kicking Jake in the shin just for being so oblivious. It wouldn't do her any good, and she said she would recruit Jake, not beat him up. She sighed and rolled her eyes at the thought of what she was about to do. "Sit down. I need to talk to you."

On her way to lunch, Karen looked up from some papers as she heard Samuel greet her.  "Oh, hello..." she started, but then paused as he moved past her.  She turned to watch him for a second, then moved and grabbed his arm.  "Samuel, are you alright?" she asked.  But he didn't respond.  Just pulled away and kept going.  "Samuel!  ..." she called after him, staring.  ...That did it.  Samuel was clearly not suited to teaching, not ready for the stresses the job presented.  She turned on her heel and headed for the dean's office, intent on speaking with Aaron about Samuel and making him see that a teen could not handle the pressures of instructing other teens.

What was going on?  The other girl had seemed endlessly upset one minute with something Mr. Ervin had said, and then the next...the next, she was asking black melty-fire boy to sit down.  How did she know him?  Did she know what he could do??  Penelope stared down at her chicken and dumplings, pushing them around.  It'd be rude to get up and run away...let alone walk away.  But she'd lost her appetite and was hard pressed not to do just that.  Bolt back to the safety of her room and her paints.  She swallowed and sat still, trying not to show how uneasy she was.

Samuel was so caught up in thought, that he nearly missed the newcomer's greeting. He looked up from his revere, taking in the elegant clothing that the man dressed himself in. " You have been told truthfully, what was it? Zaniel?" Samuel replied quickly "If you're wishing to apply for a job, you would to see the dean." He looked around the hallways, getting his bearings. He hadn't paid much attention to where he had wounded up in the hallways. 'His office should be just down that hallway" He nodded to the long hallway on his right. He looked back at Zaniel curiously. "Obviously you're a mutant, considering your question, so If I may ask, what is your talent?

Samuel became suspicious when Zaniel coyly avoided his question, but none the less, he could easily find out. He returned his attention to Zaniel. "Trying to keep secrets are we? he said dryly "You'll find that in this school, it's very hard to keep secrets safe from prying eyes." Samuel's face lit up with a small grin, which disappeared as quickly. " This school's purpose is to give mutants a safe place to learn to control their abilities, and use them for the betterment of mankind. Now if you would follow me, Senor, I'll lead show you the way to Mr. Shaw's office." And with that he swiftly turned on his heels, and made his way for the dean's office.

When Jessica folded her arms, a slight smile crossed Jake's mouth, but when she rolled her eyes and told him to sit, his mouth dropped open a bit, another slightly stupified look on his face. "Uhhh...okay..." He was not expecting this.
Sitting down, he noticed the girl splattered with paint sitting there as well. He gave her an amicable, "Hi," with a meager grimace. Then, lifting a finger to indicate on his own face where she had some paint spattered on hers, pointing out the obvious, he added, "You got a little..." before thinking better of it and just smiled and said, "You know what...? Nevermind."
He turned his attention back to the apparently very serious Jessica, and, shoving a spoonful of potato salad in his mouth, asked, "Sho wut'sh thith abut?" Realizing what he'd just done, he chewed a few times, swallowed big, then turned to her again as though for the first time. "So what's this about?"

Karen rounded the corner and came up short.  There was a strange man and Samuel.  And the man had swords.  "EXCUSE ME!" she let out, outraged as she shot forward.  She was there within seconds and moved in between the strange man and Samuel.  Her eyes narrowed.  "You will put away those swords this instant or I will burn your face off!  Do you understand me?" she snapped defensively.  No one threatened a teen, student or teacher, under her watch.  She stared down the strange man with a harsh glare, waiting on his move.

Samuel was actually caught by surprise when Zaniel procured a second sword almost identical to the first one, but only for a moment. He gently took the blade, his face seemingly covered in regret, but anyone who truly knew him, would know that it was all a ruse. He assessed the sword's weight, and pointed it upward. "A battle it is then, if you lose I suppose this would be a dream to you wouldn't it, or maybe a nightmare?" He grinned somewhat nervously "Please, you make the first move, I wouldn't know where to start, since I've never held a sword before." Then, seemingly out of nowhere Karen came screaming at Zaniel, something about putting the swords away. "Oh, Karen calm down, He's not threatening anyone." he said sternly "Now if you'd please vacate the area, we are about to duel after all."
