People still love Cartoons right?

I have to think that in this brave new internet age where you can watch any show you want at any time that other people still watch cartoons on a regular basis. I myself will admit to unapologetically being a fan of a number of cartoon shows, many of them even new shows that I wasn't a kid when I first watched them. Anyway I just wanted to shoot the shit with people about their favourite shows and maybe find out about some new ones to check out.

So without further ado I suppose I should recomend some shows:
New Things
Steven Universe- Great show about a young boy growing up and learning about weird powers he inherited from his non-human mother. It has fighting, comedy, slice of life, and some really good character development all wrapped up in a pretty apealling art-style. Also it has an abundance of female characters.

Star Vs. The Forces of Evil- A mostly funny show about a girl suddenly being sent from a magical world into an ordinary non-magical world. Mostly it just has some shorter fun stories revovling around something magical that Star hasn't quite figured out yet and/or Marco (the boy who lives with Star) dealing with Star or even just regular people things. I also really like Marco because it seems like all too often when a female character has a male side kick on a show the guy just seems to be comic relief. Looking at you Kim Possible.

Gravity Falls- A show about two twins who stay with their Uncle at his "Mystery Shack" for the summer. It doesn't take long before they start to find out that lots of weird things happen in Gravity Falls literally all the time. The episodes are mostly about encountering some weird phenomena that is happening around town and dealing with it, towards the end of the series there is some really freaking stuff that happens when the twins go up agianst what is essentially an H.P. Lovecraft style elder god. For kids!

Well I could be here all day with recomendations and I am sure that the three I have here would probably seem pretty obvious to anyone who does still watch cartoons today but that is A-Okay I just wanted to get the ball rolling.

Today, I'm able to appreciate some of these beloved older shows even more because I can recognize the cleverness that went over my head as a kid or the kind of built-in jokes that were always intended only for adults. For instance, the Beetlejuice cartoon was recently released on DVD (all 96 episodes) and I've watched through it twice, relishing the nostalgia. I highly recommend combing through that one if you can get your hands on a used copy or if it's somewhere on youtube.

Another favorite from back in the day was Peter Pan and the Pirates. Captain Hook, voiced by a scenery-chewing Tim Curry, was one of the best villains ever, and putting young people in constant mortal danger was never a problem for this before-TV-rating-systems-existed masterpiece.

Gravity Falls is only available online as far as I know since for some reason Disney doesn't want to print it in physical media for some reason.

Also I would recommend that if those are the sorts of shows that you like you should try checking out The Maxx, Cyber Six, and The Tick. The Maxx has a really psychedelic narrative about a homeless man who is also a super hero(or is he?) and his social worker who he believes he is saving from a crime lord. Its really about trying to figure out if Maxx is a mad man or everything else in the world is mad. Cyber Six is about a cross dressing super heroine who runs around in leather at night battling a made scientist and is a male high school teacher by day. The Tick is another super hero show about a hero who hardly even fights crime.

Ooooh I know Keith David has an incredibly sexy voice as Goliath, and I am a straight guy even! Also the very first season has someone getting shot and there is even blood. I mean the episode was kinda ruined by the ham fisted message about gun safety and guns are dangerous and stuff but what can you do?

He does, and may have had an effect on what kind of voice I consider is sexy now. :P Buuut what I enjoyed more, was Goliath's personality. I also really liked that they were mystical beings, and came awake at night, that kind of thing. So fantasy.

Its certainly not my favourite show but I can understand why some people like it, besides which it seems like it would be a good show to "boot-up" with after you just woke up. At least it still has the original voice cast as far as I know.

Not the only show they did that with either. Mortal Kombat was adapted into a kids cartoon, as was Robocop. The 90's was really weird for doing stuff like that, I remember all sorts of Alien and Terminator toys showing up as adds in comic books. Strange times.

I would recommend "Over the Garden Wall" if you enjoyed Gravity Falls. It follows another pair of siblings in this case brothers  who fall into a strange fairy-tale land. Every episode is basically an adapted folk/fairy tale that also works into a larger narrative. Its a really well put together show and its only 6 episodes so you can knock it out in an afternoon. Its like two hours total because every episode is between 10 and 15 minutes.

I actually disliked how separate Teen Titans was from the rest of the DC Animated Universe. It only got a passing nod once, from Batman, in a Static Shock episode where he mentioned that Robin was 'With the Titans'. That's literally it. Hell, Teen Titans GO! actually had Batman on there, at least once, as a cameo. That's more than you can say for Teen Titans. Every other DC Animated Universe was intertwined and it was beautiful, far more elegant than, say, the current DC CW TV Universe (not that the latter doesn't have its charm). How much more fun would the climax of Justice League Unlimited have been if they brought in the Titans? Or the rest of the Bat-Family (We never saw Batgirl, Nightwing or any version of Robin throughout JL/JLU). But everything that started with Batman The Animated Series was gold. That's why I call the generation I came from, the Golden Age of Cartoons.

Yeah hopefully Young Justice Season 3 will be good. Though I suppose really its like season 2.5 or something since from what I read they didn't actually get the finish season 2 at least not the way they wanted to finish it anyway.

Not really that into anime anymore, especially ones that look Power Rangers-y in structure (although I could be wrong, I'm basing it off my limited knowledge of older versions of Voltron). I think I saw it featured on Netflix but I cancelled my subscription already.

And YJ season 2 seemed like it ended very well, lots of awesome cliffhanger type stuff up in the air, but without a third season confirmed at the time it was more like a slap in the face. Really looking forward to seeing how things turn out with Darkseid and Vandal Savage teaming up with Apokolips and WarWorld as their weapons. Having the team fighting what I hope will be a small army of Female Furies is the biggest thing I'm hoping to see (although I'm impressed how many important females are featured in the show without any of it feeling forced.)

I love older cartoons, that would have the PC brigade spitting like cats. As i discovered this big wonderful box with moving images i had to get my morning fix from an newer not as rich tv station.

They showed us old Tom and jerry cartoons, the kind with actual violence, baseball bats and hammers appearing out of nowhere smacking the cat across the face, and occasionally the lower half of the cats owner. Apparently a large  angry african american woman, not that i knew at the time. She just hit the cat on the head alot and yelled at him.

They also aquired this older, 1970's?, hand drawn spiderman/ spiderwoman cartoon, these actually told a story and again a level of violence. And off course, older looney toons.

A lot of Today's cartoons, i'm sad to sad, are terrible. I had the misfortune to linger on Nick one day, and they had this cartoon about ducks delivering bread, the idea itself i could work with. But the way they went about it, it was just loud and moronic.

In the last year or two I finally got around to seeing ATLA, but couldn't get past 4 or 5 episodes, it just seemed too kiddy to me. Maybe if I had tried a few years before, around when it first came out, I might have enjoyed it more but I didn't have the patience to keep going when I actually did. I can see why it does appeal to people, though, and if I'd gotten through more of it I'm sure I'd have wanted to finish but the early stuff didn't do enough for me.

If you haven't jumped on board the Steven Universe train, right now is a REEEEEEALLY good time to start from the beginning and ride that choo choo all the frick the way to today.  Rumor has it we're coming up on the series finale sometime this year or early next year, and by the time you're finished devouring all four-and-a-half seasons worth of the show you'll be good to be an utterly broken, emotional husk like all the rest of us fans.

I mean, maybe it's a LITTLE ON BRAND for me to be completely head over heels for Steven Universe given my favorite anime of all time (hint, hint, look left), but I honestly think it's one of the most emotionally intelligent television series I've seen in a long, long time, animated or otherwise.  While also being adorable and funny when it's not ripping your heart out or making you appreciate just how palatable it can make incredibly dense topics.  It's a show that teaches kids about consent in multiple different aspects without being preachy about it!  It's amazing!

Archer's great and all, don't get me wrong, but I am still super bummed out that we never got more than two episodes of the Xtacles. Which is weird because I didn't really like Frisky Dingo all that much. I sort of want to try and get back into the Venture Brothers, but I forget where I stopped watching and where they picked up again in the intervening years and hiatuses.

Avatar is a show that I can say I respect. When it came out, I was getting close to being or already was a freshman in high school and most western animation had lost it's appeal to me, but I always respected Avatar because it did things not a lot of fantasy series or other animated shows actually bothered to do. They drew inspiration from different real world cultures with utterly stereotyping them or turning into an irritating appropriation fest, it touched on subjects that other shows, especially those with a much more comedic bent would have ignored or danced around, and actually showed that the creators put some fucking time and effort into the world building. Though I wouldn't call it "mature" in the sense most people would, it did touch on things a lot of western animation wouldn't at the time. I mean, it actually bothered to touch on the horrors of war, it discussed genocide, and it touched on other subjects people would shy away from and they managed to pull it off without traumatizing the kids it was aimed at. It was sort like a wuxia Game of Thrones (granted I had yet to begin reading the books at the time and the HBO series didn't exist, but I trust what I mean is clear) for younger audiences and for that, I will always respect it. Now if this is what they were able to do with a cartoon aimed at a younger audience, why the ever loving fuck don't they do something similar for much older audiences?

Now honestly, I barely pay attention to western animation these days because frankly, there's not much that interests me, partly because most western animated series are comedies. Now there are some that I like, but generally speaking, I find it harder to be engaged with comedic works for some reason and even primarily comedic anime have an extremely hard time drawing me in. Actually it's even more difficult for me to get into comedic anime. When comedies do draw my attention it's usually because they say something about humanity or life or just touch upon things I have experience with. While I haven't paid as close attention to it as other people, I do have a lot of respect for Rick and Morty. Also, stop me if you've heard this one before, but Bojack Horseman is incredible. If a show is going to be comedic, I'd hope they'd take cues from this one.

I realized that in many cases, I need that undercurrent of seriousness, pain, or anger to make comedy hit home for me. To my mind, the best comedies don't just discuss experiences that people have or present bizarre situations, but confront them.  Much of the best comedy in my eyes is on some level confrontational or even oddly philosophical. I mean, if you were to look at Seinfeld, whether it's intentional or not, it's basically about the absurd extent to which our lives are ruled by seemingly arbitrary norms and it rubs it in our faces. Bojack does much the same thing. It may be painful to watch, but it's the sort of comedy I need more of in my life. It may sound strange, but the tragic elements of the series are actually kind of therapeutic to watch, at least for me. Yes it's a comedy, but it doesn't ignore pain and it's afraid to go to really painful places which for me is important. Much of my own sense of humor is pretty dark, tinged with anger, or based in some kind of deep seated frustration. I don't know how many people consciously realize it, but there are people who need that sort of comedy. They need it to be tinged with pain because everything else can feel insincere or doesn't help them confront their own agony. I don't know if I'd say the show has saved my life, but it made it easier to actually deal with some of the internal turmoil I've had to deal with.

Anyway....Sorry for the lengthy digression. I was thinking about some things as I was writing this post.

I've no doubt just grown up but I don't like the new cartoons at all. I don't like the style of art or animation whatever you want to call it. I did like the artwork in Stripperella though as that to me looked old school style.

I still like some of the older stuff like Scooby, Flintstones/Hanna Barbera stuff and Looney Tunes but I couldn't watch a lot of it in one sitting.

It can truly be amazing how as an adult you can go back and watch a show you loved as a kid.

Last year when the first trailer dropped for Season 5 of Samurai Jack, I went back and watched a good deal of the old episodes in anticipation for the new ones. Something a many of others can attest to I'm sure  ;)

That part I loved the most though was the love put into it. From the get go, it was set up to resolve Jack's story for those who waited 13 years to find out. Aimed at that age group who grew up with the original series and presented in a more mature format without losing most of its charm.

It tells how much the creator of these cartoons can also love their creations just as much as the fans. The ending felt choppy by a lot of people, but regardless I still love the fact, despite 13 years the people who made this show to begin with wanted to come back and finish the story they started.
