Disaster: Miami

People go about their daily lives and quite alarmingly, seldom think about the dangerous world around them. Even after months of quarantine from a global pandemic, they think they have ridden out the storm and foolishly, they think things will go back to normal. Little do they know, that COVID-19 was just the beginning.

Miami sits at the southeastern tip of Florida and is in the direct path of Atlantic hurricanes, but it's not just hurricanes we need to worry about. Objects fall from the skies, tsunamis that begin hundreds, even thousands of miles out, accidents made by man, volcanoes, drought, rising tides. There are dangers everywhere and we believe we are safe because they don't happen too often. What happens when they all begin to happen shortly after the last disaster ends?

Game Information:

  • Open to everyone, but initially accepting a maximum of 6 players. Current player count: 4
  • The characters are individuals that are of various ethnicities, cultures and beliefs, but are
    brought together by the disasters.
  • The expected sexual rating is Light: Human, according to the description provided by
    Elliquiy.com
  • Sex isn't a main story element, but intimate details may occur in channels separate from
    the main story.
  • Game is mainly freeform with some system-based directed story elements and random
rolls on lists made by the GM's. Ratio of freeform to system is 70:30
  • The game is mostly a drama that centers around the reactions and interactions between
the characters during a series of disasters.
  • Character professions and occupations are not restricted to the white-collar or blue-collar
workforce, first-responders, healthcare workers, law enforcement or security personnel, or
other professional careers and may simply be living in the city. The only restrictions are for
    active-duty military or government personnel.
  • Despite them being strangers to each other, they all are community-minded and to a
certain extent (decided by you, the player) seek to help out their fellow neighbors. Good,
    honest, average people.
  • The setting takes place on the east coast of the United States, in and around
Miami, Florida, set in the Summer of 2021, after the pandemic of COVID-19 has, more or
    less, ended.

Disaster Roll list Sample (to be edited)
Samples of what's to come...

First Disaster

EMP caused by massive solar activity, Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). Results in complete loss of power to all devices in the area. The sky later that night will be full of beautiful aurora lights, brighter then any full moon.

Suddenly everyone on the West Coast loses communications with the outside world. Planes fall out of the sky, motor vehicles crash/stop working. Riots break out within hours. Riots will be isolated mostly to the poorer neighborhoods but sporadic violence and outbreaks may occur elsewhere.

Where will you be?

Our couples are all out together for a day trip shopping with plans for an evening movie together. The event begins as the couples are at various stages of arriving at the shopping center. The couples original plan was to all meet up inside at the east entrance side of the mall.

Possible outcomes charts to be rolled by GM for each couple:
(The details of how it plays out will be up to the role players. The chart is to set the scene and/or possibly show the final results.)
1. Car crash just before arriving at the shopping center parking lot. Head on collision. Results in couple member "A" being injured, minor head wound (cut), broken nose and black eyes.
2. Car crash just before arriving at the shopping center parking lot. Side swiped. Results in couple member "B" being injured, minor head wound (cut), sprained wrist (side facing door), and on the same side the forearm has a cut.
3. A news helicopter crashes right beside the couple in the parking lot of the shopping center. There is an instant explosion and flying shrapnel. Both members of the couples are knocked to the ground suffering minor bruising, scrapes, and some torn clothes.
4. Just inside the mall when the power goes out. The couple is at the top of a particularly dark set of stairs leading down and gets pushed accidentally by the tripping/stumbling people from behind. The couple tumbles a few stairs in a mass of bodies. No serious injuries, only minor bruises and having to deal with a tangle of people.
5. The couple is at the entrance to get into the shopping center when a driver in a truck, not paying attention, strikes a young woman beside them. She is seriously injured with a broken leg, fractured ribs, and possible internal bleeding.
6. This couple will be fine at first but gets attacked by a rioter a couple hours later. The attacker will come out of nowhere <GM will PM the couple to let them know when it happens.>
7. This couples apartment will get burned to the ground by rioters before they can manage to get back home.
8. This couples apartment will be broken into and vandalized, all valuables and electronics stolen.

The end of the first event. In a few days power will be restored and after the first night the rioting will quiet down but it will still be dangerous to go out at night.

Second Disaster

An Earthquake hits. Larger then anyone has ever seen (Possible magnitude 9+ and it hits close by out in the water.) Some large buildings will topple, most brick older structures in the area will collapse. Anything with more then a few stories in height will be considered to dangerous to go into until engineers can assess the structures.

What will happen to you?

Our couples are out volunteering in the days after the EMP disaster when the power has been restored. The couples are working in and around a civic center where normally college sports are played. There are people coming to the site to collect free bottled drinking water, some food stuffs, and to register for aid where needed. Most power has been restored at this point but some people still need assistance as a lot of vandalism occurred because of rioting in many of the poorer neighborhoods. So, all the couples have volunteered their skills and time to work with the Federal Emergency Measures Agency (FEMA).

An Earthquake of this size will last for about 5-10 min's. The ground will suddenly rise up (like the feeling you get on an elevator), then you will feel it roll under you like a wave on a boat. Your feet will be taken out from under you as the ground shifts by several feet back and forth (even a very well balanced person will end up on their backsides unless you drop to your knees right away.)  The pavement will crack all over the place, small fissures will open up in places. As the waves roll through the ground over and over again, even well prepared buildings will begin to crumble and those with the most earthquake resistant structures will sustain heavy damage (You are all at a well built Earthquake resistant structure.)

Your first reaction would be to consider this to be a minor quake then the realization that it's much larger then normal... then if you are familiar with earthquakes you will soon realize that it doesn't end in 10-20 seconds like a  normal quake... instead this one goes on for an extra long time and stuff begins to happen.... (see charts below)

What happens when the Earthquake hits: (Possible outcomes charts to be rolled by GM for each couple)
(The details of how it plays out will be up to the role players. The chart is to set the scene and/or possibly show the final results.)
1. Couple is inside the building at a table with bottled water. Part of the structure collapses on them, pinning them under in a small pocket of steel beams and concrete. They both sustain bruising, minor cuts, torn clothes, and get soaked from the water bottles that explode when they are crushed by concrete. One of the other couples and volunteers will dig you out shortly. You may have free movement or be pinned to the ground, it's up to you both but you can't get out on your own.
2. A gas main breaks and spits fire at couple member A who sustains minor burns and burnt clothing but is able to put themselves out.
3. Couple member B falls down stairs while carrying a heavy box of food stuffs - twists their ankle and sustains minor bruising as well.
4. The couple is out in the open and watches as a massive part of the civic center structure collapses on the location where the medical staff were working in a makeshift clinic. You'll want to get your friends help immediately to start helping dig people out.
5. This couple is outside when the quake hits and is witness to watching a partial freeway collapse and some buildings collapse. The couple was with a large gathering of people all lined up to get into the civic center and you were just passing out bottled water and if anyone was in need of emergency aid you were sending them to the correct lines ups or taking them inside immediately. The last thing you see is your car get crushed by a falling metal light pole.
6. This couple will lose their home as the structure where they lived will have crumbled.
7. This couple runs outside together but a fissure opens up and couple member A falls into it. It's a couple dozen feet deep and the sides are slippery. That person will be very dirty, there foot will be stuck between some rocks and they will have a deep gash in their side that requires medical attention. Several people can lower someone down via rope and pull them out.
8. The couple is inside as the quake hits, they are in the stands talking to people and collecting names, medical information, addresses etc.. When the event happens the stands will collapse with the couple standing on them. Together with all the people in the area they will fall several feet into a tangled pile of rubble and chaos. Several minor cuts will be sustained, bruising, and maybe some shock. It will take a minute or two to climb out of the rubble and help others get out of it

The end of the event.  As all of this happens it will drag out for several minutes. People will be shrieking the entire time and horrendous sound of splintering concrete, brick, wood, and the wrenching of steel as it all unfolds around you.

The next couple weeks will see martial law in effect, FEMA working overtime in shelters, help centers, etc...

I'll be adding more disasters and more random event results as we role play.[/left
Gameplay FAQ

Where will this be played?
   Discord

What is the rating that players should expect (if coming from E)?
   Light-Human

Who is the game open to?
Everyone who has been approved to access and post on Elliquiy.com

How many players are we looking for?
Aside from the GM's characters, about 3-4 players.

Plot Outline:
A series of disasters strike a city and characters in the city (controlled by players) react to random occurences within each disaster and try to navigate to safety.

Possible Rolls:
Most rolls will be made off-screen by the GM's in regards to location-specific scenarios. If multiple characters are in the same vicinity, those characters will be included in the same scenario. Smaller action rolls can be made by players to gain more information or manipulate anything in their environment.

Action Rolls:
Each player character has the ability to perform certain actions that may give them more information about their surroundings or manipulate the environment in some way. These include:

Charm actionTo manipulate, persuade, or convince someone (can be done to NPC's only)
Cool actionTo act under pressure
To help out someone
Tough actionTo kick some ass
To protect someone (other characters or NPC's)
Sharp actionTo investigate the environment (focus on benefits)
To read a bad situation (focus on hazards)

{This is one of the core mechanics to the game Monster of the Week by Evil Hat Productions)

Short summary of player roles:
Players are citizens living or working in (city of choice) and are community-minded, meaning they seek to help out their community in any way they can, though at which extent is determined by the player. They can be blue-collar or white-collar workers, healthcare workers, first responders, law enforcement, anything is open, as long as their work is present in the city. To each other thay are mostly strangers, brought together through the multiple calamities affecting the city.

Character creation:
Players are advised that their characters “Come As They Are,” meaning they have not planned for anything bad to happen to them. They may bring something that is required to do their work, but should not have anything that will give them an advantage in every disaster. (character sheet to be added).

Restricted player roles:
Active-duty military personnel are restricted at this time. Instead, reservists personnel, retired personnel and military recruiters with offices in the city are allowed.

Setting:
City to be determined. Possible candidates are: San Francisco, Miami, Pittsburgh, Anchorage, Seattle, New Jersey, Toronto (Canada), Dallas, Houston. These cities are candidates due to their size as a metropolitan region with established infrastructure that can be damaged in a major natural disaster. Many areas will be affected and are not limited to transportation, tourism, distribution of goods, and police and security.

Story Schedule and Timing:
Each disaster should take about at least 3 weeks real-time to introduce and roleplay through, more depending on the pacing or amount of content. In-game, the disaster and its effects on the city and its population can span a 24-hour period or more.

Lasting Effects (Continuity):
This pertains to continuity between each disaster scenario. There are chances for your characters to become injured or be in a state other than healthy, but we guarantee that they will not die, unless you want them to. Injuries will not miraculously be healed once the next disaster rolls in, so I expect every player to have common sense and be aware of their character's state every time you write your posts. Severity of injuries or states are determined through the random events (see Possible Rolls above).

Required Resources (if any):
Some elements are based on Monster of the Week tabletop games and from Dungeons and Dragons games, but most rolls are made by the GM's. Action rolls require a pair of dice (2d6). Elliquiy provides an online dice roll mechanic that should suffice for this game.

Game Pacing:
Medium-paced. Expect multiple posts a week by players.

Post requirements:
Invidual posts on Discord has a maximum character limit of 2,000. We recommend keeping your posts short. If you must write more than 2,000 characters, write in a word processor that has an ability to make a character count. Please enter your posts in sections, one after another, so it has an appearance of being a single large post. To help separate your posts from others', you may use an end tag. Due to limited permissions of some players, you may only edit your own posts.

How much sexual activity is likely to occur or expected, if any?
Sexual scenes will and must be roleplayed in a separate channel and may or may not be set in the same time frame as the main in-character channel.

Tagging used or not?
   Minimal tagging will be provided.
Game Master Participation Level FAQ

Will there be a Co-GM?
   Yes. His name is Chreestafer.

How guided will the play be (sandbox, directed, etc.)?
Players will be told when events are going to occur and charts will be used to advise players what happens to
their characters. See random lists provided for examples.

To what extent will players be allowed to create/use environment or setting details?
Players are expected to use common sense. It is a typical modern environment. Given a certain city, there are many landmarks and location references to aid in players' navigation of the environment. Therefore, they are not required to know each and every street in a city, just the general cardinal direction towards a certain destination. They may also use an Investigate Action (that must be rolled themselves) to determined anything that may stand out in their immediate surroundings.

How will NPC's be handled (By GM and/or players, and what expectations)?
GM's may set the tone for the environment but players may NPC the minor NPC's. The GM's may add major NPC's along the way when needed that the GM will solely control. Minor NPC's include immediate family, co-workers, friends and bystanders in the same location.

How active will the GM be?
The GM's will also have a player in the game, but will not gain any added advantages over other players.

Will there be an OOC channel?
Of course. It's the channel you land in when you get an invite link.

How to contact GM's with questions/concerns?
If to contact GM's about an issue outside of roleplay, like due to harassment or something similar, please use the Direct Message on Discord or the Private Message on Elliquiy to do so. If to contact GM's about a suggestion to the game that hasn't been explicitly stated or included, you may use the #ooc-channel to bring to our attention and thus discuss it with the other players if need be. If to contact GM's regarding a certain action that may need rolls done for it, please use the #rolls channel with the form format (to be added).

How will decisions be resolved?
The GM's make all the final decisions.

Will PvP be allowed?
   No

Oath of the Drake:
   Link Here

God-modding:
Please be respectful of other players. Even though this roleplay is on Discord, most rules on Elliquiy regarding the conduct with your fellow players must be adhered to. Please discuss any sexual acts prior to performing them in posts.

Player Participation Expectations:
Players are required to post once per week. If a player misses a week, the GM's will attempt to contact the player to remind them that he or she hasn't posted in a while. If we get permission from the player, the GM's may NPC them for that week's post.

New players once game is live:
This will be managed on a case by case basis by the GM's. Existing player are expected to be welcoming and accommodating to new players.

What writing style/POV?
   Standard 3rd person

I'm interested in this as well.  Did the other game ever actually get started?  I'd be curious to read the previous incarnation of it, and trying to find it in the archive might take a while, considering how long ago it was.

Eliza

It did get started, actually, but it fizzled it out a month or two afterwards. There are links to the IC threads.

EDIT: I've added an extensive FAQ regarding the game for those who are interested. Please refer to first post.

golani

interested...just a quick clarification...does Coast Guard count as military?

DummieBlondie

I am pretty interested in this to play a stripper who is studying to be a registered nurse if there is still an open slot for me to join.

I would ask in what capacity did you think a possible character enlisted in the USCG would do in a typical day? I did look it up and some tasks do no encompass scenarios that battle threats to the population; mostly maintaining security in coastal waters.

That is an interesting choice. You have read that sexual scene will not be a part of the main story channel and can and will be done in a separate channel?

I can post an invite to the Discord Server, if you'd like.

yes I would like that, I am looking forward to see what a young sex worker who is trying to get an actual job will face in such turn of events.

“The Doctor: This is bad, I don't like this. [kicks console and yells in pain] Never use force, you just embarrass yourself. Unless you're cross, in which case... always use force!
Amy: Shall I run and get the manual?
The Doctor: I threw it in a supernova.
Amy: You threw the manual in a supernova? Why?
The Doctor: Because I disagreed with it! Now stop talking to me when I'm cross!”

Ummm...rescue people?  After all, search and rescue (SAR) is a major function of the United States Coast Guard. But don't take Wiki's or my word for it, go to Opa Locka and ask the hard-working men and women at Air Station Miami about the SAR mission. Or the folks at 7th District HQ in Brickell. But be sure to do that before Atlantic hurricane season officially begins 1 June. 2020 promises to be another busy year.

Oh. Sorry. I forgot Memorial Day was yesterday. Well, for the prmurposes of this game, I'd say Coast Guard is definitely military and is therefore also, restricted.

NiceTexasGuy

Edit:  While this looks interesting, this is not me responding to indicate my interest in playing since it's more than I am able to take on at this time.  I just wanted to contribute a little blurb that I thought might help.  Good luck and have fun.

* * *

A quick word about the Coast Guard.

Here it might be useful to understand the terminology and the use of the terms "Military", "Armed Forces", and "Uniformed Services"

The "military" -- unofficially as I'm using it here, falls within the Department of Defense and consists of those entities we usually think of as military -- (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps -- and I guess now the Space Force.)

The Armed Forces include all the above plus the Coast Guard -- which is not part of the Dept of Defense, but Homeland Security.

There is also another term, the "Uniformed Services" which includes all the above plus the commissioned corps of the Public Health Service and the commissioned corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  Officers in these organizations wear uniforms similar to their military counterparts.

So the Coast Guard is not part of the Department of Defense (the military establishment), and while it has ships with guns and supplements the Navy in time of war, we think of it primarily in terms of search and rescue and policing the waterways in and around our country.  They do have other jobs which many people don't think about, but a Coastie in Miami will more than likely be involved in things like looking for smugglers, rescuing boaters in peril, conducting safety inspections, etc.

Interestingly, the PHS provides officers (Physicians, Dentists, Therapists, Environmental Health Officers, etc.) to other uniformed services - primarily NOAA and the Coast Guard.

==

So .... not knowing what you have in mind for the players that would necessitate a military exclusion, it's possible a Coast Guard member would be more comparable to a police officer / firefighter / paramedic in his or her duties, except that he/she doesn't have the option of quitting (or even calling in sick) and is subjected to harsher discipline in case of missing work.

Hope this helps.
What a shame -- The money you spent on those tattoos could have gone toward a boob job.

Ah, this helps! Really it does!

Why I'm restricting such careers for the characters is because I wanted to emphasize heroes to a community can come from the least of places. Do mind that I am allowing reservist personnel and retired personnel, with the reasoning that most of the time, they would appear as plainclothes civilians.

EDIT: Game has started its first scene. We are still open to a couple more players.

Eliza

We are still looking for players. Currently we have 4 active at this time. Could use a couple more!

We are still looking for 2 more players. We are done with the (rather short) first disaster and have started an interlude before the next disaster.
