I love that England won their game with dignity -- by taking it to the corner flag.

Remiel

From the UK's Guardian:

Quote"All we could do was keep going," (Landon) Donovan said. "We were taking big risks by the end but the guys at the back did an unbelievable job of stopping counter after counter. It's not all about the guy who scores the goal."

I can't believe how much this guy has grown up.  I remember when he was just a young, immature punk, and now he's a genuine leader.  Salut, Landon Donovan.

USA defeats referees, 3 - 2
Laughs.  Indeed.

I wonder if someone at FIFA is quietly relieved that some outcries about bad calls and threats of soccer boycott/ protectionism will be missing amidst the celebration after that last minute goal.  Or, will they be sulking because they lost their bribery channel or their own bets against the US  :P

Just curious why the referees seemed so excellent for the first couple days of group...  Most everything I've watched after that, pretty clumsy officiating to say the least.  Is it just harder with faster-moving games, or what gives?

Stan'

FIFA don't want to bring in video replay evidence to assist their referees because they want the big teams to go through.

Big teams get the majority of the refereeing decisions.

No big teams = less advertising revenue.

Ramael

Also, arguable choices makes for vitriolic bickering - bickering that often makes it onto radio and TV programmes.

If there were clear cut video replay footage decisions (like there are in rugby, coughcough) then there would be less reason for these pointless programmes to exist, and at least three channels I could mention would be bereft of material.

This has been stated by several football commentators as valid reasons why video refereeing isn't taken on board.

Football's an enjoyable sport to watch, but the entire industry that surrounds it is fucking horrible.

Remiel

Hey, Ridcully, you guys get Klose back next game, right?

Also, what happened to Podolski? I don't think I saw him in the match v. Ghana.

He was there. I didn't see the match against Ghana but on it shows that he played. I just don't think he was overly active.  :P

Gah! I can't wait for Saturday!!! *squee*

Yeah, Klose will be back on. And since Cacau didn't score, he'll be playing. I'm not too happy with it.

Podolski didn't have a good match at all. Ghana took him completely out of the match.

Izu

Omg!!! Slovakia is kicking Italy's asses!!! Woot! xDD It seems that it's the world cup of the underdogs!

Dear soccer god,

a lot of things might still happen at this World Cup.

Messi might score goals which make us dream.

England vs. Germany might become a match we'll still talk about in 50 years.

C. Ronaldo might actually miss a hair on his body when shaving, and we'll see it in 3D.

But whatever still happens,
whatever still comes,
how beautiful matches and goals can still be,
I already say: Thank you.

Thank you dearly.

Thank you for this:

1. Paraguay   3    2    5
2. Slovakia   3    -1    4
3. New Z.      3    0    3
4.  Italy    3    -1    2

I think I have to repeat it:

1. Paraguay

2. Slovkia

3. New Zealand. Yes. This just happened. New Zealand is in front of

4. Italy

:D :D :D : D

Thank you dearly.

A soccer fan

Izu

Um...What happened to the 2006 World Cup Champions?...
...Poor Pepe, had a chance to tie it and apparently decided he would rather go home. That was...a VERY interesting match!!!

Oh well, Italy. See ya in 2014...If you can get your shit together. :P

Italy ended up bottom of their group?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I'm beginning to think there is a God after all, or at least one with a highly developed sense of humor.

Nico

Izu

If there are any Aussies reading this -- even though you guys didn't advance, the Socceroos battled like warriors.  You were handed a couple of bullshit red cards and some other unlucky breaks.  You deserve to hold your heads up high.

Ditto for New Zealand.
