I was wondering if anyone would be interesting in having a group game set in a post-civil war Western town.
Think "Deadwood" in terms of general style and tone.
You could play the proprietor of a saloon, a fancy brothel madam, the town doctor or Sheriff, a down on his luck prospector, a preacher, a gun for hire, ...

In terms of the plot, I would set the game at a time when the community is confronted with a large influx of new people due to some gold and silver being discovered nearby, bringing along every chancer and hanger on in the large vicinity.

Before I work out a CS and flesh out the idea more, I'd like to have a proverbial show of hands in here of folks who (perhaps) would be interested in such a game. Thanks!

*edit*

Edited to add the when and where as well as the CS:

The year will be 1876 (keep that in mind if you make a character with a civil war past, in terms of him or her having an appropriate age).
The location will be the fictional town of Whitestone in Colorado, which has recently gone through a boom in population due to the discovery of precious ores in the nearby hills.

Rejoice!  :-)

Forgot to add in my OP that if you have some idea of what you'd like to play, it might be interesting to hear it already. :)

I might like this, not big on freeform but its not like everyone will be a combat monster.

Would love to do this. Town doctor would be awesome, who was a doc during the Civil War, depending on how much after the CW this takes place. :)

Aiden

I'd be up for a game in this setting.

Perhaps a con man/ snake oil hustler or  an heir to a family ranch.

I have plenty of ideas for this setting. It will be like playing Red Dead Redemption

Lord Rupert Everton

I am interested. Would love to play some sort of ex-soldier.

Julles

I'm tentatively interested. Maybe an heiress to a fortune moved west recently... with a dark side of course.

IrishWolf

I always enjoy the wild west. Union Army vet turned miner for me.

Wargtass

Former Ranger who got his leg crushed and have settled down in a small town for his retirement... yes, that might do. Will have to work on it.  ;D

hmmmm.... is there room for a lonely girl somewhere? thinking the lonely widow now struggling alone on the farm :) or possibly the owner of the local whore house

HarleyQuinn

I'd love to be one of the Saloon girls. Not like the prostitute kind but the performer kind. Or a general store owner?

I will likely build and run the local school offering a four year and eight year option, depending how much education the parents want for modest tuition if the school headmistress is not taken.

I'm interested in playing the forlorn sheriff.

I like the idea on the down on his luck prospector.  Less 'crazy coot' and more 'eternal optimist despite chained failures.' Always has another plan that'll totally work this time.

Maybe as a cover for a growing desperation.

Name: Bernhard Krause
Gender: Male
Age: 42
Appearance: Bernhard is marked by a long and hard life. He has been shot and stabbed several times during his extensive military career and has many scars to show it, most notably his bum right leg which was crippled by a Minie-ball. He's still a man in his physical prime but no longer fit for adventures.
Role: Retired soldier and gunsmith.
Background: Bernhard was born in 1834 in the city of Darmstadt, Hessen, a former city state in the west of the German Confederation. His father was a gunsmith and his mother a seamstress. His ancestry drew from the long tradition of Hessian mercenaries and his grandfather had been one of many to fight on the American continent during the War for Independence, but unlike many of his contemporaries he had returned to Hessen after the war was over. He apprenticed under his father until he turned 18, when he decided that merely making rifles for the German armies wouldn't suffice. He enlisted on a five year contract during which he would become an accomplished Feldwebel.

In 1857 Bernhard was released from his contract and put in the reserves, but had yet to see any military action and was becoming restless. He moved to Berlin and became a precision rifler and gunsmith. An opportunity arised when the American Civil War broke out and the call to arms went out to all civilized countries to fight against the slavery of the CSA. Bernhard was shipped along with several thousand more volunteers to North America. The mixed regiments appaled the young Feldwebel and he tried to centralize command by teaching his compatriots English but without results. It was during the Siege of Petersburg late in the war that he was struck in the leg with a Minie-ball. Opposing amputation his leg settled wrong as it healed and he was unable to continue his service. He returned to Germany content with his contributions to the fall of slavery and once more took up his gunsmithery.

In 1870 the Franco-Prussian war broke out and despite his crippled state Bernhard was recalled to the army which was in need of good officers with field experience. Remaining mounted for the most time he found himself commanding anything from jägers to dragoons and hussars to uhlans. After the war was over a year later he was given a generous pension by the newly formed German Empire. On a whim he decided to move to the US which had grown into a very stable democratic nation, on the contrary to the German states which had moved further and further away until becoming an imperial state. His skills at fieldcraft and as a gunsmith landed him new work in the frontiers where his leg was considered a minor drawback to his proficiencies. He worked for several more years helping several settlements becoming established before he finally settled down and built himself a smith and cabin in the small town of Whitestone in Colorado. He's hoping this will be the last stop and that he can finally become settled himself.

Name: Daniel Greenwald
Gender: male
Age: 51
Appearance: A hair under 6 feet tall, still quite strong for his age
Role: Proprietor and manager of the “White Rose” hotel & casino
Background: Daniel was born and raised in Boston. His father  - Otto Greenwald – had come over from Germany and established the family business: a haberdashery. Daniel spent his childhood years as an apprentice to his dad, slowly mastering the work until he could make as fine a suits and clothes as his father. In spite of Otto’s dreams of passing business on to his son, Daniel’s own ambition went further than simply spending his life making suits for men richer than he was. At the age of 23, he took his belongings and every penny he had saved and headed west, eventually settling in South Dakota. There he worked all manner of jobs - including assistant to an undertaker, cook at a hotel, clerk to a notary – until he had saved up enough money to buy his own lot of land and set up his first business: a hardware store. Business grew slowly but steadily for the next couple of years until gold was struck nearby and he made a small fortune due to the many chancers who descended upon the area and bought their prospecting gear from him. Thanks to this boom, he had the funds to establish his second business enterprise: a saloon. Initially merely serving drinks, he soon took to prostitution in the back rooms as well. Indeed, so many young women were now descending upon the area that there was a near endless supply of prospective whores who were all eager to work at one of the brothels.

Both of his business ventures now did well enough to make Daniel a wealthy man by the age of 35. Unfortunately for him, the good times came to an end. The gold mines dried up one after another and the formerly booming community slowly but surely shrunk again. Further challenging his enterprise was the civil war, which sent much of the country in turmoil.  Thankfully, Daniel had seen the tide turn just in time to sell both his hardware store and his saloon for a tidy sum. Along with the money he had made during the good years, he now had a small fortune to spend on his resettlement. He decided to sit on his money until the war ended. Thus he arrived in Whitestone at the age of 40 and bought a large lot of undeveloped land on Main Street. There he erected the White Rose, a hotel & casino that also offered the services of girls. The entire establishment was more upscale than his saloon had been, which was his intent. Even though the place did not bring in the kind of money his saloon in South Dakota had at the height of the gold craze, it did bring in a steady supply of cash. Now that gold and silver have been found nearby, Daniel can feel the same air of opportunity in the air as before he made his fortune in South Dakota. Exciting times are surely ahead.

Name: Kitty O'Donnell
Gender: Female
Age: 36
Appearance: She is perhaps not the most gorgeous woman in  town, but her long red hair and elegant dresses will make most men turn and look as she passes them in the street. She tends to use only the tiniest amount of beauty products relying on her naturally pale Irish skin to accentuate her hair and freckles instead. Like all of her girls she tends to wear clothing that will accentuate her small breasts and hips, but to a lesser degree then her girls. She is the madam after all, and whenever she is outside she will carry her trusted parasol to protect her skin from the harsh sun. Underneath her voluminous skirts she carries a small 22 caliber Derringer for protection as well as another in her purse.

Role: Owner of Miss Kitty's House of Pearls. A newly built brothel where she and her girls care for the poor lonely men of Whitestone.

Background: Born in New Orleans from a single mother who worked as one of the painted ladies there so prostitution was something she knew all about from an early age. And like many others in the same situation she would follow her mothers footsteps. When her mother passed away from the consumption Kitty who was only 18 was left on her own and was forced to become a whore herself in order to afford food and lodging, much to her disgust several of the men who used to come for her mother now came to see her. And as one after another of the men would be rutting above her she started developing a hatred not just for them but for men in general, the owner of the whore house saw the early signs in her eyes and told her in no uncertain terms that it would be better for everyone if she where to leave town before her volatile temper got the best of her. So she left her home and everything she knew and headed west along with so many others looking for a new and better life, as she stopped in various small mining towns she saw all too often how people would spend every single cent and leave destitute. That coupled with her own mothers fate she swore she wouldn't end up broke and with no means to support herself.

She stayed for many years in a smaller trading community called Shamus Rocks after its founder an old Irish trader, there she picked up a lot of tips from him as he took her under his wing since saw in her the old Irish spirit. Even though most of the honest women would turn up their noses at her she finally grew a thicker skin and could ignore it, the only thing that would get her blood boiling was when some of the men would abuse her or one of the other working girls. And one night it came to a head when the youngest girl was brutally beaten by a drunken cowboy, and in her anger Kitty grabbed a shotgun and the last thing the man know of that night is the press of cold steel against his privates before she empties both barrels into his most tender region. Realizing that the law would come down hard on a lowly whore such as herself she quickly grabbed her belongings and fled west once again. This time she would settle in Whitestone where she built a brothel with the money she had stashed away. While the local hotel would also offer up the pleasure of willing girls Kitty decided to not compete and instead the usual whiskey and gambling that many brothels would have she set down a strict no booze rule. No more would some drunken lout hurt her girls! Also with no booze flowing there would be less fights and it soon got a reputation for a calm place where a man can enjoy the company of a charming woman in or outside of the bedroom. The main attraction would quickly be a large bathing area that is decorated to look like a natural grotto where a man can get a caring massage from one of the young ladies to limber himself up for more fun activities later.

As for Kitty herself, being the madam she only goes upstairs with the very few men that catches her eyes. While her hatred has mellowed a lot over the years she still harbors very real suspicion about all menfolk so it is rare that any man can get to experience her very real bedroom prowess. Lately she has started feeling her age and wouldn't mind settling down and perhaps have a child or two, but so far no man has managed to get past her thorns to find the lonely heart beating in her chest.

Name: Erasmus Reynolds
Gender: Male
Age: 33
Appearance: (As pictured)
Role: Doctor
Background: Erasmus was born in 1843 to a very well-off family in Boston, MA. His father a doctor himself, it was known quite early that Erasmus would follow in his footsteps, and at the age of 17, with his father's influence and money, Erasmus began his official medical education. About a year later, the Civil War began.

Erasmus continued his studies for a couple years before the call for medical personnel became more desperate. Feeling it was his duty – despite harsh protests from his mother and father both – Erasmus answered that call and offered his services to the US Federal Army. He began his stint as an assistant, using his budding medical knowledge from his schooling to work effectively and efficiently with more experienced doctors. But the hands-on experience he gained treating wounded soldiers would far outweigh his time spent in the classroom.

For three years he aided wounded soldiers as best he could, from illness to disease to amputations, he rarely received a day of rest, following the army from battle to battle. Erasmus did not pay attention to the color of a man's uniform – nor the color of his skin. He felt it was his calling to aid mankind in whatever way he could.

When the war ended in May of 1865, her was faced with many choices. He could return to Boston and try to mend fences with his estranged parents, he could work somewhere else in the Northeast, perhaps even in New York or Washington, he could even travel south, as well. But in the end, he decided to travel west into the newest frontier.

Erasmus wandered from town to town until he came to Whitestone, Colorado. He loved the climate, the rugged beauty of the area, the fresh air of freedom and the open range of possibility there, and since the town didn't have a proper doctor, he decided to set-up shop there. With what meager funds he had remaining, he bought a small building that he could use to both see patients, while having a living space in the back.

Out on the Front Range, danger lurked around every corner, even if it was a different kind than what he faced in the war. He hoped to become a part of the community, perhaps even one day considering politics, depending on the situation. Hopefully a wife and possibly some children were somewhere in his future, as well. Until then, there was always the possibility of the brothel down the street to help relieve any tension he might feel on those cold, Colorado nights. And when he was bored, a game of cards, chess, or backgammon likely wasn't far away, though he didn't gamble, generally keeping his hands – and reputation – clean.

Lee in "Good, Bad, and the Ugly" is just... just classic. All three of those guys were rogues, but seeing that show as a kid, I always imagined ALL bad guys looking like Lee. LOL!

Henry Fonda in "Once Upon a Time in the West" is probably my all-time favorite Western Baddie. Those cold eyes were so intense, and just his attitude. If I was gonna be a bad-guy flunkie, I'd wanna work for him! :)

Gene Hackman in "Unforgiven" was a pretty interesting character, too.

TONS of choices out there. But I still think you picked a -great- one.

For some reason people only seem to remember the baddies in the Spaghetti westerns.
There are good ones in older westerns too.
Like Jack Palance in "Shane" or Dan Duryea in "Winchester 73". Both essentially play sociopaths long before such characters became cinematic staples. :)

Yeah, for me though, the spaghetti westerns were just far more 'dramatic', while the older ones were more 'popcorn' westerns.... and I love me some spaghetti a lot more than popcorn. ;)  TV vs. Movie versions I suppose.

The bad guys in spaghetti westerns just felt more... believable, I suppose, but that's just me. But that isn't always guaranteed of course.

#56
Name: Alice Taylor
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Appearance: Picture. Picture 2
Role: Heiress
Background: Alice isn't exactly the normal kind of debutante most families have. She is already 25 and she's already been through 2 suitors. It isn't normal, and she isn't expecting people to be accepting of it, but just kind of ignore it really. The family came from south Georgia area from an expansive estate. They were known there by everybody and the Taylor's almost owned the town they were in. They were rich, and as her grandparents would say they earned it. The family will swear by that until they die. They claim to never do anybody wrong, and their money came from hard work and good investments. Nevertheless Alice has never really trusted her own family, only her brother really has her trust. Their family heritage is traced back to the middle of the united kingdom, they were one of the first wealthy families to come over to the new world, and then they moved to the south. From there on, it was a basic history. As the times came and went, the family eventually moved to their estate. When Alice came to the age of ten her older brother went off to the war, and she suddenly took a turn towards the worst, at least in the eyes of her mother. She started rebelling against becoming the young thing that her parents wanted her to be for the young suitors that were going to take interest in a few years.

The fighting ended in 1865, but her brother hadn't come home until 1866 right after Alice had turned fifteen, and her parents were trying to get her ready for the suitors to come, but she refused to agree to it. So, her parents focused on her two older sisters who had suitors coming from all over and the elite young men who were just coming back from the army were very happy to lend a helping hand to make them happy. Who wouldn't be happy to married into such a large and elite family as the Taylor's? Soon, her two sisters had been married and Alice was turning 21 soon. She watched her two sisters move away and they both had children already, who Alice loved. She loves her sisters children, almost more than she loves the rest of her family. Meanwhile her brother, who was the sibling who was the closest to her, was soon to be married also. Alice hated his wife to be, but could never tell her brother that. Alice left the house alone much to her families dismay. But, when people started going to the west the Taylor's were not going to leave their daughter alone in the world without anything. They showed up after three years, picked her up, and moved her west with them. They moved into another grand estate by the town of Whitestone.

Alice hated to admit that she wasn't doing well on her own, as she could find no job and nobody would trust her. The things that she liked the most were the grandiose parties that her parents would throw. They were amazing events in which everybody was invited, all walks of life and everybody was expected to come. They were very large, and very alcohol fused parties. Alice quickly found herself enjoying the times at the parties, and the times that she was partying were fun all she had. But, now she was friendless and alone with only her three younger siblings and her parents. To many that would seem a large family, but to her it was only half her family. Alice's brother was not able to come as he had already made arrangements in the Georgia area, in regards to business and his upcoming wedding. She felt lost without her rock. She always regarded her brother as the only one she cared for in the family, he helped her through everything. But, the rest of her history is all personal things. But, that is for others to find out. She has a slight haze over the new city that they were all living in now. Besides the family history, Alice's own history is secretive, and her parents don't want people to know much about their odd child.

IrishWolf

Name: Patrick O'Rourke
Gender: Male
Age: 34
Appearance: A tall man, standing six feet and two inches, he looks like a man hard used. His once fair skin is tanned and weathered, from years at sea, with hands heavily callused. His chest and face are covered in oddly shaped and spaced scars, from his time in the United State's Navy, when he caught a blast of splinters. His hair is a dark auburn and while he carefully trims his mustache, the hair on his head tends to get a little wild and curly.
Role: Former sailor turned miner
Background: Born in Killybegs, Ireland, 1842, Patrick immigrated with his family to Boston in 1850, to escape the an Gorta Mór or the Great Hunger, known to the rest of the world as the Irish Potato Famine. Work was hard to come by for the O'Rourkes, has it was with many other of their Irish Compatriots, leaving his family to live in poverty, crammed into a windowless apartment with two other families. At the age of fourteen, he was given five dollars, which his father had managed to scrap up and headed down to Nantucket, where he was signed aboard a Whaler as a cabin boy.

For the next five years, he would sail with the Yankee Whaling Fleet, until the outbreak of the Civil War. While he was respected in the Whaling fleet, as were many other minorities, Patrick still felt the old sting of the hate his family had encountered upon reaching the shores of America. Determined to help prove the worth of Irishmen to the United States, as his fellows enlisted in Army regiments, he signed with the United State's Navy. His enlistment would see him aboard the USS Cumberland and ashore as part of a detachment of sailors and marines for the Battle of Hatteras Inlet Batteries. He was back aboard the USS Cumberland soon after, where she was part of the blockade until March 8th, 1862, when Cumberland was engaged by the ironclad, CSS Virginia During the exchange of cannon fire, Patrick was struck down by flying splinters, from a Confederate cannonball striking the hull, which nearly killed him. He then nearly drowned when Cumberland was rammed and sank.

After he recovered from his wounds, Patrick would be stationed aboard USS Kearsarge, serving as a loader for one of her Dahlgren guns, as she hunted for the Confederate Raider, CSS Alabama. He would be one of the seventeen men awarded the Metal of Honor, for  marked coolness and good conduct and was highly recommended for his gallantry under fire by the divisional officer, during the Battle of Cherbourg, in 1864. He would continue to serve aboard Kearsarge, until 1866, when she was decommissioned.

Returning to the Whaling fleet, Patrick would sail from New Bedford, aboard the Bark Roman, bound for the Arctic whaling grounds off Alaska. Death would come for him twice more, while he sailed aboard the whaler. In 1868, he was nearly crushed to death and almost drowned, when the whale boat he was in, was smashed by the fluke of a bull sperm whale. Then in 1871, he nearly froze to death, during the Whaling Disaster of 1871, when thirty-three ships of the Arctic fleet where trapped in ice. Taking it as a sign from the Almighty, he chose not to go to sea again but headed inland, chasing gold and silver strikes, hoping to make his fortune and return to Boston.

Name: Dr. Chantal Aglionby

Gender: Female

Age: 32

Role: Headmistress of Aglionby School & Owns Aglionby College (a life experience heavy degree mill offering bachelors degrees)

Background: Born to a wealthy French family involved in the shipping and wine industry with more and more investments in the Americas she had the benefits of a fine education at the best boarding schools then the Université de Paris where she earned a bachelors degree in the Classics and later her doctorate in Philosophy. She decided to come to the United States where she invested in some railroads and set-up a correspondence college pretty much selling degrees for only minimal work and offices in several locations to confuse the issue with the state authorities around the country. Her interests locally is to set-up a top notch local school for children offering a four year diploma (Basic Diploma), eight year diploma (senior diploma) and guided high school diploma (four more years, boarding school for girls) leading to college or a teaching license. Also she runs a Colored School outside of town offering Indians, negro and other children of color a Basic Diploma for free and no indoctrination like other schools she even encourages speaking native languages.

In France she was openly homosexual but in the United States she has had to be far more discrete openly she says she is dedicated to her work and has no time for a husband and family, that usually suffices she is wealthy on her own and besides her work promoting education she is active as an academic writer in various areas of interest. She has men around her a friends, learned to play a good hand of poker and besides fencing learned the basics of shooting a gun and learned several Indian languages and is literate and well spoken in Spanish. She also knows English, French, Greek and Latin.

Her school does sport a fine library likely one of the best in the territory outside the capital and she adds to it regularly.

Tuition at the main school is fair and covers the teachers wages paying 15% over standard rates plus room & board and she gets money from the government for the school and to run the other school (Army and Indian Affairs). Her boarding school is a bit more expensive generally for the daughters of people of some means. She does take trade for tuition labor, farm goods and so forth in trade to some degree.

Name: Isi Millaray. Christianized: Isabel Miller.
Gender: Female
Age: 21.
Appearance: She is medium height and has an athletic body. She's got waist length black hair that often has turquoise ribbons woven through it if she has her hair braided. She wears no makeup but does wear a lot of jewelry. She's very soft spoken and knows English very well after having been raised by white parents.
Role: Stable hand at the local horse barn and often times tracker for hunters.
Background: Isi is of Comanche heritage; her mother being full and her father being white. She often identifies with her Comanche heritage even though her father raised her after her mother passed away at a very young age. Her father wasn't cruel to her but often just let her be since he felt ostracized from the rest of the people since he had an inferior child. She grew up by herself and often wondered what her mother's side of the family was like. When she was eleven years old, she left her father's house and ventured to where her mother told her side of the family lived. She was welcomed with disdain first but when she told them of her mother, they soon welcomed her into the fold. When she turned seventeen,  she was promised to be wed to a warrior of another tribe to make peace between the tribes. The wedding went off without a hitch or trouble and a year later she had a daughter. When her baby girl was only six months old, her young daughter died and she went into a deep depression only to be sent further in when her husband was fatally wounded by a Calvary soldier. She vowed revenge on that man for taking everything from her.

When she turned nineteen, she decided that she needed to move on from the village since everybody was fighting and no one wanted to maintain their culture anymore. She couldn't just leave without an explanation so she went out on their sacred hill where she meditated and fasted for a week. It was her way of reconnecting with nature and becoming one with her spirit. When she was finished, she was greeted with a hawk staring at her for a minute before taking off. She went back to her village and told the elders what had happened and there she was tatted with a hawk along the back of her neck. In her culture, the Hawk represented the oneness with nature. She told them she would be leaving the tribe since that's what the Hawk wanted her to do. They gave her their blessings and soon she found her way to Whitestone. She loves it here and found a job as a stable hand working with horses. She would often lend her tracking skills to hunters for extra money and she expects that this would be where she will remain until she feels the urge to move again.

Name:  Oscar Hemwitt Doubleday
Gender:  Male
Age: 40
Appearance:
Role: Sherriff
Background:  Oscar Hemwitt Doubleday, (b. January 3, 1836) was born in Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania, to a prominent Protestant family of Welsh descent.  He was a career United States Army officer and Union brigadier general in the American Civil War, same as his father, who died of cholera during the Mexican War.

Oscar attended Norristown Academy throughout his adolescence, and Governer David R. Porter elected him as a candidate for West Point Academy, graduating eigth in his class in 1856.  He, along with his best friend and future nemesis, Jimmy Major, became a Second Lieutenants for the United States Cavalry, and battled the Comanche in the Texas frontier in 1958.  He would see several of his classmates in skirmishes throughout the next disastrous decade.

He served with distinction at the Battle of Fort Sumner, and led a brigade into action in the opening engagement of the Battle of Gettysburg.  There, he was wounded and forced to spend the next two years in bed at his family's estate, though he spent the winters of his recuperation recruiting soldiers in Philadelphia.  He survived typhoid fever and dysentery, and rejoined his corps shortly before the Battle of Sayler's Creek.  His genial disposition, his serene nature and his personal courage endeared him to his troops.

Doubleday became a federal agent after the Civil War, traveling abroad to bring Confederate criminals to American justice.  His misadventures brought him to England, France, Norway and Egypt.  His skill set qualified him well for law enforcement abroad, though he was a little fed up of the American government's constantly freezing his funds in the pursuit of wanted men.

Tired of traveling and federal bureaucracy, he settled down in a Colorado boomtown as its rugged sheriff.

Your CS looks fine Pistoleer, but you have me wondering about one thing: your character would have been 29 at the end of the civil war, would that not have been a bit young to have risen to the rank of brigadier general? It would appear that nowadays an officer would need 20-25 years of service to attain that rank.
I might be wrong of course and it might just be that things were different back then?

During the civil war, -both- sides were pretty desperate for competent officers. George Custer was actually promoted to General at the age of 23. :)

While that wasn't normal (and funny enough, Custer graduated LAST in his class from Westpoint, harhar!), there were other examples of 'young generals' because at the time, it was simple necessity that caused it to happen.

Galusha Pennypacker is the youngest soldier on record, at age 20, to hold the rank of brigadier general, though that's been disputed.

Eight Union soldiers and seven Confederates wore generals' stars before they reached the age of 25.

Nowadays, such desperation isn't necessary, and most generals are in their 50s, as far as I know.

So it's not impossible, no, but it's entirely up to you, as you're the boss. :)

And promotions were easier say Robert E Lee thought he was a good officer and had a recommendation say from Stonewall Jackson he could simply promote the officer with an order, now such promotions require system approval to fill a need and someone who attended the War College. Its a lot rarer in most nations. For comparison here is another Northern Officer he entered the war due to his education as an officer and rose fast to Major General.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Chamberlain

So such promotions were hardly common but hardly rare.

I tried to be historically accurate.  Doubleday has numerous similarities to other fellow graduates from the class of 1856, who were of the same age.  His life is basically the foil of Confederate Brigadier General James Major, up to a point, who in his story was his best friend at the academy and also his worst enemy on the battlefield.

Name: Elizabeth Doubleday née Carlfeldt
Gender: female
Age: 24
Appearance: see photograph
Role: Sheriff Doubleday’s wife
Background: Elizabeth is the youngest of five children. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, her parents being German immigrants who settled there. Her father worked many odd jobs, though his longest steady employments were as a fishmonger and then later as a dockworker. Her mother added to the family’s meager earnings by doing some work as a seamstress. The Carlfeldt home wasn’t a particularly happy one with her father Helmut being a sometimes abusive drunk. Her two oldest siblings, Martha and Emily, left the home as soon as they could latch onto a prospective husband. Her two brothers, Helmut jr. and Siegfried both used the war as a pretense to leave home, joining the union army. Her father’s oldest son and namesake was killed in 1863, which only sent Helmut senior further into alcoholism. Siegfried was wounded on two occasions and did survive the war, but resettled to Chicago and married there.

Finding her home situation increasingly more unbearable and having little other prospects to flee Brooklyn, she found the answer at her local church, seeing a printed advert asking for women willing to move West and marry one of the many single men out there. After some initial doubt, she overcame her fear of marrying a total stranger, assuming that her current unhappy home life could not possibly be worse than whatever waited for her down West. After exchanging letters with several men in a couple of different states, she eventually agreed to travel to Whitestone Colorado and marry the local Sheriff. Upon her arrival she was shocked to find that the man appeared to have second thoughts after meeting her in the flesh. She refused his offer of funding her trip back to Brooklyn and eventually he did agree to go through with the marriage.

As it was a marriage of the mind rather than the heart for both of them, there was some initial unease, but a year later they have forged a union that is quite practical yet isn’t entirely without passion. Elizabeth enjoys the large amount of freedom her husband allows her on their homestead. She was initially flustered by his passion in the bedroom as well as many of his requests which she thought odd and unusual, but she has grown accustomed to and even learned to enjoy that aspect of their relationship.

which begs the question, how historically accurate are we with various tolerances.. as in.. same sex couples.. and blacks. since in the real west there was a lot of discrimination

Julles

I was wondering the same thing... Haha.

RubySlippers

If a major city if France it would be no issue, in the Wild West it was the place to go to live ones own life its usually a matter of discretion just don't talk about it but some cultures the Indians would likely not care at all, they tended to consider Two-Gender people special which is good.

A real example in the Appalachians folks they are oddly very tolerant just be good folks and not cause issues most people will treat you well, my grand aunt and her lover were a couple openly in her community for decades so was no issue she was the local teacher and her "wife" was a doctor so they were important to.

I would say if she is not open about it most would not pry. She would be a woman who prefers to be unmarried and focus on her work not an Old Maid sort of woman. What she does in private, is private.

HarleyQuinn

Well, Isi doesn't discriminate. :)  ;)

RubySlippers

She is not going to be open about it but might run a branch school for Indians and others who can't attend a largely white school. Well have to sadly be true to the period and an Indian School could be good for a government contract.

Character done, just for reference her colored school is named that to fit the period she is not racist in fact she fails to get racism but they didn't want Indian and negro and Mexican children in the main school. Oh well. Basically there is the nice main school and the one backed by the government to help enlighten the savages and promote learning among other sorts paid for by the Army and Indian Affairs plus her resources.

I figure on the plus side though as a respectable lady most of the menfolk and town should not cause her any issues. In fact her school is exceptional its like one you could find in the capital or a big city like Chicago. And affordable.

I'd like to submit her. Let me know if she's okay!

Name: Rose Reynolds

Gender: Female

Age: 27

Appearance:

Role: Owner of Lazy K Ranch

Background: Rose was born in Creede, Colorado. Her parents were hard working folk, and they managed fine with the silver boom that had taken the town. Rose was raised in an average home, she certainly did not live in luxury, but she was not raised in poverty either. They were good parents, and Rose was raised in a strict but loving home. She went to school and was expected to marry a good husband. This did not, however, mean that she was not expected to pull her own weight at home. She gained a potential suitor while attending a town dance. Mark had been visiting the town selling cattle when she was twenty one. Mark Reynolds would eventually become her husband. They were married when she was twenty two, and she moved to his ranch in Whitestone, where she became a rancher’s wife. There wasn't much love in their marriage at first, he needed a wife to give him children and she needed a good husband. Eventually they grew to appreciate each other though, even though they failed to have any children. She was expected to do her part around the ranch, which she accepted and welcomed. It wasn't long before their arrangement blossomed into a slow, but deep love for one another. Unfortunately, three years into their marriage, her husband was gored and trampled under a bull before the ranch hands could help him.

Now a widow, she is the sole owner of the Lazy K Ranch. The ranch hands do most of the work these days, however she still does a lot of work around the ranch. She has not remarried and hasn't given much thought to it. Even though it has been two years since her loss, she still mourns him. She very rarely talks about it with anyone though. Her husband taught her a lot about ranching during their marriage, and in the subsequent two years she learned even more. She has a love for the horses they use for herding cattle, and taking care of them is a task she does not leave to the hired help. She can be a hard woman, given the work she does and the loneliness she endures, but she is also kind. She longed for children before the death of her husband, but has for the most part given up that dream. For now, her only goals are to keep the ranch going and make her dead husband proud.

I think Isi and Rose will get along!

Username : Curvykitten
Full Name : Rain Alexandria Lexington though that is not her real last name
Age and Birthdate :29
Gender : female

Occupation : The owner of The Bulleyes Inn and Tavern
Sexuality : Striaght
Distinguishing Features :  A scar that looks as if someone took what looks like a whip to her back.

Optional Image : Picture 2Picture 3Picture 4Picture 5

Personality : Rain may not look it, her beautiful face and well toned body. But don't let the those pretty eyes fool you, those that know her can tell you what a type of temptress lies beneath. Strong willed, confident, and quick witted all traits she has learned over her years of travel.  Her animal nature controlled and clearly used to her advantage. Though there are moments when you can tell she connects with the animal within. And she enjoys every moment of it.

She is known for unshakable nature, having to be an unmovable force of her own. A woman in this day and age was either a trail blazer, or a house wife. And she certainly was something as simple as a house wife. She never really talks about her past, just tid bits here and there. She has strong will, a loyal heart, is stubborn as hell, and has a temper that can rival and shake anyone around her when truly provoked. She is heat, passion, exploration, strength, mysterious, seduction,  all in one untamed and amazingly curvy well-toned body.

Brief Biography :
Rain was born to a woman that was a servant to what was considered a noble family in Europe. The classic young noblemen fell in love with the servant girl. Sweeping her off her feet promising her the world and sleeping with her. Getting her pregnant and of course as all stories went she had a happy ending....not likely. Once her mother told the man she was pregnant he dismissed her. Saying she was nothing but a whore and that it was not his child. Disgracing her mother and ruining her chancing at finding a good husband. Having to settle for the only man that would have her ruined and used body. The local butcher a bear of a man. The young woman did good not to lose her child as the man took to beating her. Giving birth early to Rain, so named for the storm that came that night. Her mother always loved the rain thinking it left behind a clean slate and a promise of something new. And that was what she wanted for her, hope of a better life.

As the years past Rain grew into a lovely young woman. Her mother taking beatings and forced to give birth to two more children both boys. Rain and her mother were both treated as lessors in the house hold. Both were beaten for any wrong look or word. Which never meant anything good for Rain as she was always a defiant and challenging young woman. So she spent many nights recovering from what her father’s fist had done. When she 13 Rain was told that she was to be married off to one of her father’s friends when she turned 14. A much older merchant, a man that was just like her father. Rumors even travel about the low ends of town of this man having beaten his last wife to death. It was than Rain decided to really fight back; she refused to marry the man and even told her father off. Her brothers only laughed at her words. But her father was outraged and beat Rain so badly she was out cold for nearly a weak. The scar on her back a cruel reminder of how truly horrifying a person could be. And a reminder to never trust a man, or give your heart to one.

When she was well enough to move Rain ran from that home. Trying to get her mother to come with her but the well beaten woman refused and stayed behind. No doubt to catch the brunt of her father’s wrath when he found out she was missing. From there Rain traveled the world slipping through society as easily as anyone. Rain found that she had a talent for blending into any social situation. Even finding it easy to convince even those of high society that she belonged there.

As she traveled Rain learned all sorts of things from different areas of life. From languages, art, history, reading, writing, math, all one would need to be from a high class way of life. But she also learned the things she needed to survive in other ways of life. The art of making the deal, scamming, conning, and fighting in a style that fit her smaller frame. Finding she became a rather affective fighter and even more importantly a strong will confident woman. She would never be the victim again with the skills she had now. And she would have what she wanted, and no one would stop her or make her cry ever again.

Soon she came to america what money she had earned over her travels. She found herself being drawn to the wild lands of the West. Unexplored and just what a woman needed to get a fresh start in life.  She found her way to Whitestone, and soon met a woman that seemed just as strong willed as she was. Together they came to an agreement that help Rain build her Restaurant and Inn. The Bulleyes Inn and Tavern, a lovely little home away from home for those that needed it. There were those that looked at it with some disdain since she was an unmarried woman and business owner. But in the end Rain didn't care, and found that she had gained herself a home and a purpose.

Username : Curvykitten
Full Name : Lola Capri ( a name she picked because she loved the way it sounded) Her original name was Analiese Williams the name given to her by the woman she was raised by.
Age and Birthdate :25
Gender : Female
Role :Entertainer (and possible whore if given the right price)
Sexuality :Bi

Appearance : Picture 2Picture 3Picture 4 Picture 5

Personality : Lola is at heart a big kid, she is a bundle of energy and loves to live life. She knows her place in it and instead of fighting it she embraces it. So she is a whore, tell her that is a bad thing while she is laying with your husbands. And they are buying her such lovely and priceless gifts. She knows there will never be a chance for her to be something big in life. So instead she tries to get something big from life.

Lola isn't shy in the least, bold, brash, and not one to take shit when she doesn't have too. She is passion, she is fire, she is that touch of wild girl all wrapped up in a lovely lady like package. The only time Lola seems to be anything less than vibrant is when she thinks of family and the fact that she never had one and probably will never have one. And when the rains come in really heavy trapping her inside and slowing down the traffic of people that come through. Some may think it wrong but the fact that the men and even a few woman come to her because they want and crave her makes her feel wanted. And sometimes a girl just wants to feel wanted.

Brief Biography :
Lola was the first born to a lower class family that had come over from Asia. Her father was an American man that fell in love with a lovely asain beauty. They came to America then new world or endless possibilities thinking that their life would be for the better. But even with all the hope in the world there were those that looked down at her parents. And because of that engrained hatred the small town near their ranch was attacked and burned to the ground. That was the day Lola lost her family, those that attacked her home thought she was dead. But in truth the small bundle of energy was taken in and saved by an elderly woman that had worked many years with them. And for 7 years they did just fine. She may not have had a whole family or the best things in life. But the little girl than called Analiese never thought anything wrong of it. She had her Nana and unlimited time to play in the sun which was all she needed. That and maybe a good bed time story and a yummy sweet treat.

It wasn't till she was 7 when the old woman finally past that her world changed. For several days the little girl just kept trying to care for the woman not understanding what happened. But soon the smell of the dead woman drew people to them. Panic kicked in when there was banging on the door and she could see the men on the other side.  So she ran away for the day, not wanting to end up like the family she only knew from stories. After a day of hiding in the woods she returned to the house, not finding her Nana she cried for hours feeling all alone for the first time in her life. Not knowing what to do she gather a bag full of things from her home and ran before anyone could come and take her like they had her Nana. She lived on the streets from then on, only returning once to the small house to see it being torn down. The last of her childhood destroyed in on quick shot.

From there Analiese became a street kid doing her best to survive on the scraps she could steal. For a short while she found refuge with a small collection of performers. The street people of New York City, well at least some of them. They would perform for anyone that would watch every night a new show. She became the girl that could fly! Well sort of as she was more hanging from ropes and swinging from what she hoped was secure lines. Acrobatics and stunts most wouldn't even think of doing. And when there was no way to do that she would sing with the oh so lovely voice of hers and entertain the crowds that would gather. To her it was all fun and games with a warm meal and sometimes even a bed at the end of the night.

She eventually actually started talking and took the name Lola because she was wanting to change her stripes so to speak. Taking the advise of one fo her friends that said she could become anything she wanted. So Ana chose to become Lola and leave behind the pain and broken dreams, get past the storms and find her new life. But will all good things they must come to an end. One day the small group was accused of stealing from the locals. They disbursed as the police arrived, half of the small group was caught. But thankfully Lola got away with only what she had on her back. Sneaking onto a train she started her long trip west. Not sure where she would land or what would happened to her Lola did what she needed to survive.

Years past and Lola grew to learn and understand this new way of life. You got what you wanted, all you had to do was work for it. Or find the right john and he would give you everything your little heart wanted. Soon she found herself in a new small slowly growing town. Whitestone seemed full of possibilities and with a few rather interesting words and a bit of a show Lola found herself working for Kitty the local brothel owner. She was mainly the entertainment, but with a bit of encouragement fro Kitty and the very right price Lola has been known to take on a client for a bit of a private show every once and a while.

I agree! They'll have a few things in common I think.

Name: Levi Vaughn

Gender: Male

Age: 27

Sexual Orientation: Straight

Appearance: See Picture. A little over average height, strong build, dirty blonde hair, short stubble beard, medium length hair, green eyes. Has several scuffs and marks all over his body from various fights and scuffles and untamed animals over the years.

Role: He thinks of himself as a wild ole cowboy, enjoying life to its fullest, but he works as a freelancer to earn money when he needs it. He has a wide set of skills which help him earn various jobs, and his bravery and toughness gains him jobs that most others aren't willing to do. He is a top-notch rider and fighter, whether hand-to-hand or with guns, is good with animals, and never backs down from a challenge.

Background: Levi was born on a ranch in Texas, with a big, tough father, a sweet, little mother, and several older and younger siblings. He and all his brothers and sisters helped out on the ranch wherever they could, since their living depended on that. Between having so many siblings and helping out on the ranch, Levi learned several skills. He learned how to handle animals, especially horses, and built a great muscular body from his work all over the ranch. He learned how to fight and how to shoot from his older brothers. He also knew how to read and write, because his mother was very insistent on having them read, despite their father's insistence that they simply learn to run the ranch. Turns out, Levi would be very grateful to his mother for that, as it made him harder to outsmart.

When he grew older, though, he knew that he had to find a life for himself. The work on the farm was rewarding, but he wanted to enjoy life, and not just spend all his time working. After a tearful goodbye to the rest of his family, he set out to head west. At first he thought of finding a stable job and settling down, but then he realized that he was a wild, fun-loving type and that would never agree with him. And so he decided to just freelance, taking jobs where he could but otherwise just riding around, visiting saloons and inns and brothels and ranches and wherever else he happened to find himself. He stayed in cities for a few months at a time, before deciding to move on to the next one, never satisfied. He also had had his own fair share of run-ins with the law and fights that he had been in, given his unreserved nature.

So it was that five years after leaving home, he found himself in the city of Whitestone, Colorado. He quickly found an inn to stay at, though he hadn't yet explored the rest of the city. Who knew how long he would stay there?

Something like that ;)

I bet he can think of twice as many things to do ;)

I think I saw a CS thread in one of the earlier posts, but I'm not sure whether approval is required before putting CS's there.

Charlotte & Adrian, your CS is approved

Curvykitten, you might want to add the name of the inn at the beginning of your CS (the sentence that is to say what she owns is cut off before the name ;) ).
