This is the interest thread, which may change into a recruitment thread for the new SW: Edge of The Empire game.
My O&Os Peruse at your doom.

So I make a A&A thread but do I put it here?  No.  Of course not.

Depending on story, setting, and character types (if we're Sith you've got me tied up and moaning) I would be interested. ;)

Tentative interest for the moment. Need some more story info, but looks promising

Star Wars: Edge of the Empire is a brand new Star Wars roleplaying game released by Fantasy Flight Games.  It's focused around the Rebellion era, and specifically around the smugglers, bounty hunters, and other sorts of shady characters who live at the edges of galactic society.  It's got a pretty fun and intuitive system behind it, overall. ^^

Chris Brady

You had it good, maybe you were on the way up, maybe you were born with it, or you just got lucky and got a free ride, whatever it was, it's over.  One bad step, a blink or a wrong call and it's all the way down.  Now you're 'owned' by Vin'Zorbo a Hutt Gangster with too much time and ambition on his hands.  Still, he gave you a ship and carte blanche to go out and 'acquire' things for him.  And if you're lucky, you're next big score will get you free of bondage to the depraved runt.  If you're lucky...

Hmm, that might clash a bit with the motivations I had planned for my character...  Though, that conflict could lead to some good roleplaying.

Rather than some gangster just giving the players a ship and letting them loose to go steal stuff for him, though, I'm thinking it might be better if he had some specific jobs in mind that he wanted done. ^^; Dragging people in to work for you like that and then just cutting them loose to do whatever they want doesn't sound like a smart move to me.

Sinestra

I'm sure the hutt will have missions for us, but leaves us to our own devices so long as we keep sending money back... would keep a nice balance between the two.

That's the plan.  Vinny tells you to go somewhere, or do something, how you do it, he really doesn't care.  Miss a payment, though?  He'll have your kneecaps.  Even if you don't have any.

Ah, I see.  The main thing is that, due to backstory-related concerns, my character would have significant reasons to distrust that Vinny would just let them go, even if they managed to make a big score and pay off their debt, and so would probably wind up looking for alternate ways to get out of the Hutt's clutches. ^^;

Still, like I said, that could wind up leading to some excellent roleplaying, so it's not something I've really got an issue with.  It's just something that I thought you should be made aware of up-front, rather than finding out about it while the game was already going.

HairyHeretic

It's a Hutt. You never trust a Hutt to keep their word, unless you've a thermal detonator they're in range of.

Ember Star

I'm interested but not sure I have the time.

Take a peak at my character Eufaula Zemzee (you can find her in my O/O thread) and see if she might be suitable for the setting.
"One thing you who had secure or happy childhoods should understand about those of us who did not, we who control our feelings, who avoid conflicts at all costs or seem to seek them, who are hypersensitive, self-critical, compulsive, workaholic, and above all survivors, we're not that way from perversity. And we cannot just relax and let it go. We've learned to cope in ways you never had to." ~Author, Piers Anthony

Kunoichi

Hmm.  Looking over the character sheet, I'd say she could probably be mechanically represented by a Bounty Hunter with the Assassin specialization without too much trouble, though she probably won't start out quite as skilled as you'd like her to be.  She'll grow into it after getting some experience, though.

I have to admit, though, 'raised by Ewoks' is a bit of an unusual backstory element. ^^; Everything else seems like it would fit in just fine, though, so I certainly hope that the GM approves and that you have the time to join in.

Ember Star

hahahah I've had the character a long time. She's partly based off of a Jedi character I had a long while ago who was raised by ewoks, then after I read the Thawn trilogy, I mixed her with Mara Jade.

To be fair, her character's bio doesn't really contradict that fact, and her character is human, not an ewok.  In fact, there's nothing in her bio that would require you to include ewoks in the game at all unless the group was to go to the forest moon of Endor for some reason.

Chris Brady

I'm also trying to reconcile how Vinny would react to her.  And the more I think on it, the less I see that happening.  I'm sorry Ember, but I'm going to have to say no to her.

dude, did you even read her Bio? Nobody would know she was raised by Ewoks. When she was 11 she stowawayed on a merc ship and that became her family and the only family anybody would know about. She's protective and private about Endor and doesn't tell anybody about that.

At any rate, respectfully, I'm dropping interest. Don't feel like creating a whole new character for this

Chris Brady

You'll note I mentioned nothing about her background raised by Ewoks.  It's her 'savage nature', and the fact that she likely would not have appreciated being 'owned' by Vin'Zorbo.  Apologies, but I don't think she'd fit in.

Given that it's her character, I think she'd probably be the one to be the judge of that. ^^; It's a moot point now, though.

Probably should have asked earlier. Do I need the rulebook?

The basic rules are simple enough that you should be able to pick up how to play without needing the core rulebook, but character creation is a little more involved.  I can help out on that front, if you'd like, but I think you might find it more fulfilling to pick up the rules for yourself. ^^;

I have the beta-book >.>

You should make sure to pick up the latest rules update from the last week of the open beta, then.  The overall rules will be the same as the core rulebook, though I believe they made a few last changes to the talent trees and racial stats between the last beta update and the full release.

ShadowFox89

Hopefully that will be enough ^^'

Fits for my obligation, I wanted to make an Antarian Ranger... For those who don't know the lore, Antarian Rangers are the guys without force powers who assist the Jedi on missions that are considered too dangerous to go alone.
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

According to the official Obligation chart on the website, a roll of 72 is 'Favor'.  You owe someone who helped you out in a big way at some point in the past, and they fully intend to call in that favor in the future.

Of course, it's only off by 1 from Oath, which I'm guessing is what you were going for...  Right? ^^; It certainly would be fitting for your character concept.  During the time of the Empire, the Antarian Rangers largely concerned themselves with locating and hiding away force sensitives from Vader and the Inquisition, particularly surviving Jedi, so that would certainly leave you with a nice, ready-made obligation to start with...

The next question to think about, though, is what would such a character have done that would leave him working for Vinny the Hutt?

ShadowFox89

Well, I imagine they'd be part timing as a smuggler (since helping Jedi hide doesn't pay the bills).  I'll probably go with both Oath and Favor..... Oath (Antarian Ranger Code) and Favor (Vinny helped them and a Jedi hide out).

Taking Twi'Lek and Smuggler, picking scoundrel as my focus.
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

Sounds like a workable character to me. ^^ As a general aid for character creation, I'd recommend people use this lovely character sheet, also.  It's really helpful, because on top of being a fillable .pdf file, it also automatically calculates your dicepools for you.

ShadowFox89

Is there an editable version of the sheet? Or could anyone work up a plaintext sheet?
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

The version I linked to is editable, you just have to download it before you can edit it, rather than opening it in your browser.

ShadowFox89

Well, starting with 2 ranks in Charm, I hope I can bring a tiny bit of face-power to the team. Also having piloting (space) so I can do some flying unless we have a dedicated pilot.
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

Ah, nice. ^^ I've got Mechanics covered, myself, though I can also fill in on Computers and Streetwise, if we don't have anyone specializing in those skills.  I've also got a rank in Pilot (Planetary), but my Agility is only average, so I probably shouldn't be the one we rely on in daring chase scenes just yet.

ShadowFox89

I think I'm going to buy a second rank in Pilot (light) and boost my Agility to 3..... That'll account for about half my starting XP. Thinking of picking up Pilot as an extra specialty, if there's no one else going piloting.
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

My own recommendation for spending starting exp is to put most of it into your Characteristics. ^^; You can only raise those with exp during character creation, not in play, so it's generally a good idea to get them to a point you're satisfied with, then use the exp you earn during the game to increase your skills.

Also, you do get a number of 'free' skill ranks to invest in a few skills of your choice before being required to spend experience, so it's not like you'll be starting the game completely unskilled, either.

ShadowFox89

Well agility to 3 is 30xp, Presence to 4 is 40, gives me enough XP left over to boost another stat to 3.... Probably Cunning. Though I'm tempted to boost brawn to 2 >.>
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

Boosting Brawn to 2 and spending the remaining 10 experience on skill ranks and/or talents is certainly a viable option. ^^

ShadowFox89

Well, if I have two Obligations.... I could raise them a bit to get 10 extra XP, right? Looks like the errata stuff changed it so that getting a new specialization costs (new total x 10), which means I wouldn't be able to afford both it an the boost in brawn >.>
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

You can only get enough extra obligation to double your starting obligation, and the amount of starting obligation you get depends on the size of the group you're in.

Considering the number of people who've shown interest, I think you're probably only going to be able to get either 5 extra xp, or 1,000 extra starting credits for equipment.

ShadowFox89

https://elliquiy.com/wiki/File:Twi%27Lek_Character.pdf

Let me know what you think, I had to drop Presence to 3 to get her just where I wanted at chargen >.>
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

Presence 3 should still be fairly serviceable, especially since you want to be more than just a face. ^^

Looking over your skills, I should note that Brawl is no longer a career skill for smugglers.  Which ones did you select for your free skill ranks, and which ones did you spend experience to purchase?

Your Wound Threshold should be 12, not 11, and for your equipment, I'm assuming you took the extra obligation to get extra starting credits, rather than XP?  If so, you should have 300 credits leftover, not 200.

It looks pretty good aside from those issues, though. ^^ Are there prices for any other tools in the beta rules, or is it all just weapons and armor?

Edit: Ah, and I might as well post up my own character sheet. ^^; I got permission to play a non-standard race, but it's one that's fairly iconic, so...

ShadowFox89

There's prices for other stuff, yeah. I just wanted to get the basics down though. I figure her for being fairly self reliable and not exactly trained into the Rangers in a normal way- most likely a veteran Ranger took her in as a mentor or something and taught her the code.

Experience breakdown goes: Specialization (pilot) (20xp), Quick Draw (5xp), Galaxy Mapper (5xp), Brawn 2 (20xp), Agility 3 (30xp), Cunning 3 (30xp)

Which, looking at it now, means I spent 10xp over and will probably have to drop my talents. Easier to drop than the Cunning 3, but still annoying :/
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

I think I'd probably save the specialization as something to spend exp on in-play, if it were me. ^^; You would have 15 experience freed up right away for other talents and skills.

Though, speaking of skills, the free skill ranks that you get have a bit of a limit on how they can be spent.  For the Smuggler career skills, you can select any four and have each of those four at rank 1, and then for the bonus career skills added on by the Scoundrel specialization, you can select two and put a rank in each of those, as well.  Where career skills and bonus career skills overlap, this does mean that you can get up to rank 2 in that skill, but skills aren't allowed to go any higher than that during character creation.

Spending some of your starting experience on picking up extra skills or reinforcing the ones you've already got is a perfectly valid option, though.

ShadowFox89

Well, Smuggler gives me trained in: Coordination, Deceit, Perception, Pilot (Space), Skuldaggery, Streetwise, Vigilance, and Knowledge (underworld). I put 1 rank into Deceit, Perception, Pilot (Space), and Streetwise.

Scoundrel gives me Charm, Cool, and Ranged (light), and I put 1 rank into Charm and Ranged (light).

Pilot gives me Astrogation, Pilot (planet), and Gunnery.

This should be updated with all the changes: https://elliquiy.com/elluiki/images/f/ff/Twi%27Lek_Character.pdf

Alright, that allocation works. ^^ I think your character is ready to go.

Though, I wonder if Chris would let me get Force Sensitivity 1.... Anyway, bed for me. Hope this game launches off, I've been dying to try this system out since it was announced.
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

Well, you could ditch the Pilot specialization and pick up the Force Sensitive Exile specialization for the same cost.  That would get you a Force Rating of 1, though you wouldn't actually be able to do anything with it until you got some more experience and could use it to buy Force Powers.  It is a specialization that would make sense for someone with ties to the Antarian Rangers, though. ^^

ShadowFox89

I'll wait to see what everyone else is making... If someone else can pick up astrogation, then I can drop Pilot for now ^^'
Call me Shadow
My A/A

Kunoichi

Well, I should note that you don't have to be a Pilot in order to pick up the Astrogation skill.  Each rank will just cost an extra 5 XP, since it won't be a career skill.

Baalborn87

Yeah, I'm more than happy to help people create their characters. ^^ As for what I'd like to see in the game, Roaming the Galaxy sounds pretty good to me, but I'd prefer not to go AU unless we're going to be strongly involved with the Rebellion.  If we're not, then there wouldn't be much point since we wouldn't really be close to the action anyway.

ShadowFox89

I'd love to be involved in the heavy stuff in the Rebellion, going through the original trilogy with our own twist. But that's me, and I'd be fine with anything.

There's a conversion chart in the rulebook and you can find the chart online. You need the book to figure out the dice though....
Makes sense to use that, then.

Alternately, if people don't mind relying on the honor system, I can put up a link to a nice online dice roller when I get home later this evening.
It's up to the GM, and I'm not even sure I could find the book, so I don't get a vote on it ;). However, I found this roller myself, which could probably be useful to other people as well.

If nobody has any specific preferences, I think it would probably be better to stick it in Non-Con, just to be safe.  We probably won't actually wind up with any non-consensual scenes, so it would be more for just in case the story goes there.

Sounds reasonable.

I have an idea for a character I might want to play. A young man who grew up on Tattooine, who is perhaps a force sensitive if that is possible. Who grew up around Mos Eisley area and the space port. It would either be a force sensitive, or a smuggler, but either way I would want for the most part gear him towards being a pilot.

An it probably doesn't have sand lol. I am going to get it out there. I am one of the fans who knows that Han Solo shot first no questions asked. He is that kind of bad ass ^_^. I do want to go the pilot route. I am not sure if any one else in the group is going to. I might as well go the mechanic route as well. So that might mean I wont have as many fighting skills as every one else since you only get so many points to distribute per level.

Might be able to lend a second pair of hands to the mechanic if there is a need. Was just thinking about how to best be able to help since we are going to have a ship and fly it into danger no doubt.

Well, I'll note that one thing we're a bit lacking in is a good medic...  Though, being human and picking Medicine as one of your free non-career skills could easily help cover that area.  Or even just spending experience points to pick up the skill.

Or maybe we could steal acquire a good medical droid at some point...

sullivanthedreadlord

So far the way I am setting up my character I am going to more than likely ask to be made the main pilot, plus I would to be able to help out with fixing things as well. I am not going to take gunnery skills till later because I want to focus on 1- becoming the best damn pilot in the galaxy, 2- a good pilot knows enough to fix his ship in order to get to a good mechanic. I will take one rank in medic just for minor stuff. I might be convinced to improve it a few more ranks but my piloting skills come first.
I walk in the light for ever bathed in its glory, and yet my heart yearns to be consumed by the darkness hidden with in my soul

My O/O Page

Kunoichi

In that case, might I recommend Rodian for your race?  Piloting skills are tied to Agility, and Rodians start with that characteristic at 3, so you'll be able to increase it to 4 right at character creation and have the stats to be a really superb pilot right away.  You'll also be a decent shot with most ranged weapons, too.

sullivanthedreadlord

That does make a bit of sense but I really want to play as a human pilot. I hope that's okay if I am not as good as a Rodian would be as a starting character.
I walk in the light for ever bathed in its glory, and yet my heart yearns to be consumed by the darkness hidden with in my soul

My O/O Page

Kunoichi

It's not really a big deal.  You can still start out with your Agility at 4 as a Human, if that sounds like something you'd want to do.  It will just cost more for a Human than it would for a Rodian.

ShadowFox89

If we're going to have a dedicated pilot, I'll probably just go for a straight up gunslinger/charmer then.

Are you using the same pdf character sheet that Shadowfox and I are both using?  You can download it from this page if you want a blank one to work from.

I'm guessing those skills are the free ones you choose as part of picking your career and specialization, and the two non-career skills that humans get?  The math is right either way, and you'll have 10 exp left to spend on skills and/or talents. ^^

ShadowFox89

I'm probably gonna drop pilot to pick up something else, I really don't want to overlap too much with others ^^'

Kunoichi

Well, you were considering Force Sensitive Exile, as I recall.  That could give you some fun options to spend your experience on. ^^

sullivanthedreadlord

I thought I had no xp left for more points, started with 110. Raised one of my stats to 3 and the other to 4. Humans start out with 2s in every thing. Used up my 4 skills plus two for the specialization skills, and then used the last 10 points for two more skills at rank 1.

Humans get one rank each in two non-career skills as their racial ability in the final release version of the game.  Neither the Smuggler career nor the Pilot specialization adds Mechanics or Medicine as bonus career skills, so those are your two racial skills. ^^ Thus, you have 10 exp left.

Quote from: ShadowFox89 on August 15, 2013, 11:21:46 PM
Not sure if CB wants to go into force stuff though.

Well, the only other specialization you could afford would be the other Smuggler specialization, Thief.  Aside from that, you could get more skills and/or Scoundrel talents, instead.

ShadowFox89

None of the Scoundrel talents right now really appeal to me, beyond the quick-draw.... I've played too many WW games where character generation is a mini-game of where the best place to put stuff is >.<

Kunoichi

Eh, don't worry about it too much.  You could just pick up Quick Draw, and then pick one career skill that you don't have any ranks in yet and pump it right up to rank 2. ^^ Cool and Vigilance are the two skills that cover initiative, for example.

sullivanthedreadlord

So then for skills I could go with Skilled Jockey and Galaxy Mapper. How big is our ship? I hope you don't mind that I would like to help you keep the ship in shape. Though I am curious as to who is going to be the leader of this little group.

Actually, the Ghtroc-720 was replaced with the Wayfarer-class Medium Transport in the final release.  It's big, tough, and can haul plenty of cargo, though we might want to make a little room for a starfighter or two if we plan on getting into dogfights on a regular basis.

sullivanthedreadlord

Who is going to fly those starfighters for those dog fights? If I may I can understand the need for cargo space but I would like something that combines comfort, can be maneuvered at least adequately, has at least decent speed to start with and room for cargo. As far as starfighters go I am a fan of the x-wing. I love the design of it.

The basic rules for races that can't speak basic is that either everyone in the party can speak enough of their native language to understand them, (in this case, the Jawa Trade Language,) or the character in question has a translation device or protocol droid that can allow them to communicate.

I'd love to have a translation device, personally, since I'm playing a more mechanically-inclined character. ^^;

You have to take the Jury Rigged talent on the Gadgeteer talent tree before you can take Spare Clip, unfortunately.

Fortunately, however, humans get two free non-career skills as their racial ability, so by my math you've still got 20 experience points left to spend.

I think we could just use an online dice roller and rely on the honor system for everyone's results.

ShadowFox89

Boost die (1d6) : 1-2 blank, 3 = two advantage, 4 = 1 advantage, 5 = 1 success 1 advantage, 6 = 1 success
Setback die (1d6) : 1-2 blank, 3-4 = 1 failure, 5-6 =  1 threat
Ability die (1d8) : 1 blank, 2-3 = 1 success, 4 = 2 successes, 5-6 = 1 advantage, 7 = 1 success 1 advantage, 8 = 2 advantages
Difficulty die (1d8) : 1 blank, 2 = 1 failure, 3 = 2 failures, 4-6 = 1 threat, 7 = two threat, 8 = 1 threat 1 failure
Proficiency die (1d12) : 1 blank, 2-3 = 1 success, 4-5 = 2 successes, 6 = 1 advantage, 7-9 = 1 advantage 1 success, 10-11 = two advantages, 12 = 1 triumph
Challenge (1d12) : 1 blank, 2-3 = 1 failure, 4-5 = 2 failure, 6-7 = 1 threat, 8-9 = 1 failure 1 threat, 10-11 = 2 threat, 12 = 1 despair
Force (1d12) : 1-6 = 1 dark, 7 = 2 dark, 8-9 = 1 light, 10-12 = 2 light

If someone can copy this into a table, then Chris can put that into the first post of the OOC and we can use the E roller.
