The Maiden Voyage of RMS Mystic

The sinking of the Titanic was a blow from which the White Star Line – owners and operators of the doomed ship – never seemed to be able to fully recover. As the Roaring Twenties began, the company found itself falling deeper and deeper into debt, even as other corporations suddenly found themselves flush with riches. As a last-ditch gamble to reverse their fortunes, the White Star Line commissioned a new ship to be built – one bigger and grander than even the Titanic and its two siblings, the Olympic and the Britannic. Called the RMS Mystic, work on this 60,000 ton luxury liner began in March 1925, and was completed in May 1928.

White Star did not dare to tempt fate and call RMS Mystic “unsinkable” … but they did proclaim that the newest luxury liner in their fleet would be the most grand and opulent ship ever to sail in the Atlantic. Interest around the ship’s inaugural voyage began to build – would it be cursed, as many believed the Titanic to be? Was White Star indeed tempting fate? Or would this be a return to glory for White Star?

Regardless of its outcome, on September 12, 1928, the RMS Mystic was scheduled to sail from Southampton to New York City. For better or for worse, its maiden voyage would become part of history. Many rich and powerful people made a point to take passage on the ship, if only to become a part of that history … and hoped that RMS Mystic would not suffer the same fate as Titanic.

OOC

This group RP game is a fictional scenario based on some historical events in the 1920s – specifically, the fortunes of the White Star Line of ships. In reality, White Star commissioned the building of a ship called Oceanic III that would’ve served a similar purpose to RMS Mystic in this RP … however, in reality White Star went bankrupt and Oceanic III was never completed. In this RP, RMS Mystic is finished and ready to sail.

As events aboard the Mystic’s maiden voyage unfold, there will be some supernatural elements incorporated into this RP. If you’re familiar with the show “Twin Peaks” … well, think of that show being set aboard a 1920s luxury liner, and you’ll have an idea of what this RP will (hopefully) be like. If not … suffice it to say that weird, creepy strange things will be happening from time to time aboard the ship. Nothing overly gory or disgusting, but definitely disturbing.

This is mostly a sandbox setting – characters will be free to do, for the most part, what they like about the ship for the duraction of their five-day voyage. Certain events will unfold during this time; however, what the characters decide to do in reaction to those events is entirely up to the players. This could be a RP completely filled with smut, or have almost none at all – again, it’ll be up to the players. As GM, I intend mostly to lay out a few plot threads that players may choose to follow, or not, and occasionally nudge things in a given direction … but for the most part, I plan on being hands-off in regards to what the players choose to do.

This RP will be placed in the NC section of these boards primarily because of potential horror-based story elements that I intend to introduce as the story progresses. I would prefer that NC actions not take place between characters; however, if they do, all I would ask is that all players be in full agreement about what’s to take place before posts are made … and that all GMs are looped in as well.

Structure

This RP is freeform, and doesn’t utilize a system of rules. Characters would be expected to abide by the rules of polite society, as least in the public areas of the ship … within their cabins, though, they might have more leeway. The ship’s captain and crew are the authorities aboard the ship, and their rules are the final say on what’s permissible aboard the ship. The rich and famous aboard the ship may find themselves able to persuade the crew to allow certain activities, but even that would have its limits.

Characters

Characters should all be original. If they are based upon real-life people, that’s fine, but no actual historical figures should be used as characters. All player characters should be over the age of eighteen, and should be believable in the context of Roaring Twenties history – no futa or non-human characters, for example, or time-travelers from the 22nd century, or other outright anachronisms. I’m happy to work with people on character concepts that fit the setting, but please try to think of something that fits into the setting first. Starting players will be allowed no more than two characters to begin with – let’s see how things go before introducing any more than that. (Characters that join the game after the Mystic sets sail will be assumed to have been aboard the ship the whole time, just not part of the action that previous characters have been part of .)

Three different types of characters may be played in this RP:

Crew Members work for the White Star Line, and their duties are first and foremost dedicated to keeping the ship running smoothly, and keeping its guests happy. Crew members ranged from deck hands to navigators to the bartenders and waitresses on “B” Deck.

First Class Passengers are the crème de la crème of high society. Silent movie stars, oil magnates, politicians, royalty … these wealthy individuals are the social elite.

Steerage Passengers are ordinary people, usually immigrants seeking a new life in the United States. They have access to less areas aboard the Mystic, but that doesn’t mean their voyages would be any less interesting.

Posting

I’m looking for players who can write a minimum of 2-3 paragraphs per post – more is fine, but less probably isn’t going to work. All posts should either be in first- or third-person, using past tense. All posts need to begin with a bolded tag indicating who your character is, exactly where they are and who they’re with, and what they’re doing. For example:

Name: Captain Nelson
Location: Navigation Room
With: First Mate Smith and Mrs. Jones
Activity: Talking About the Weather

… you get the idea. And abiding by the Oath of Drake is always a good idea as well.

That’s it for now. If interested, please PM me or post here. Should this RP prove to be interesting to enough people, I’ll provide a character template for everyone to use. (And if you’re interested in possibly co-GMing with me, definitely let me know!)

Edit 1: Well, enough people have expressed interest in this RP to where I think a character template is needed! Here it is - if you've expressed interest in playing, by all means, please post a character for approval!

Personality: (How they act, quirks)

Edit 2: As of right now, this RP is closed for new characters. If you expressed interest in the RP either in this thread or by PM and didn't get around to submitting a character yet, you're fine - though please do send me your character concept ASAP for approval. Anyone else wanting to play who hasn't previously expressed interest ... sorry. This ship, so to speak, has sailed. ::)

The OOC thread is now open. Please use this to discuss anything you want about the game, and to ask any game-related questions you might have. Do not post questions/suggestions for the game in this thread anymore - I'll be using it to wrap up some character approvals, and then I'll be shutting down this thread until/unless recruiting becomes necessary again.

The Cast of Characters thread can also be found here. Please, don't post anything there yourself. I've learned from the experience of others that while it's more work for the GM, it's easier if a character thread is maintained by as few people as possible. That way I can maintain formatting and bookkeeping in a way that works more easily for me. The first post in that thread features Branwen's overview sheet - I'll be adding other characters to it as they get approved.

I'm currently working on opening game posts, deck plans, and more character stuff. We should be on target to start this coming Monday (March 11) - hope to see you all then!

There is another player who would be entering the game with my character if it, ha, sets sail.  :)

IrishWolf

Well this is interesting indeed. Whom to play though? A well off young officer, ready to woo the ladies among the first class passengers or a brawny stoker from the boiler room, ready to show a passenger around the engineering marvels of the ship and where to find a private place aboard.....

Chreestafer

very interested yes ;) waiting to see more interest, posting interest as a possible lower level crew member, probly some engine worker or something.

Question Mark

Wow, finally something interesting!  And I just watched Titanic again last night.  Spooooky.  So, yes, I'd like to partake in this story!

One of my ideas is to make a crew member (maybe a radio operator?) who has some interest in the occult and supernatural.  Not a practitioner or professional, but it's something more like a curious interest.  His gut reaction to the mysterious events would be to investigate them, seeking fame as the White Star crewman who proved, once and for all, that the supernatural exists.

Another concept is a passenger who was a Scotland Yard investigator in London, but who wants to start a new life after something drove him away.  He too would investigate the strange events, but he'd be motivated by wanting to protect the passengers and solve the mystery.

Thoughts?

Branwen

Look at all of the ~amazing~ writers in here!  Some of you I know *waves to the Chreestafer*, some of you are brand new and are just as wonderful *waves to Miva* and some of you I've seen your work before and admired.  Wow!  This is an intimidating group of people to potentially be a part of.  Intimidating good, not bad.  :)

Zillah, you have one heck of an idea and a reputation to so quickly draw everyone.  Good job!

CarnivorousBunny

Very, very interested :) I'd like to play either a crew member or a spoilt rich girl :P

I'll say, this does sound rather intriguing. Though I've yet to actually watch Titanic after avoiding it for ages and have also never looked into Twin Peaks, the themes that are described here sound like something I'd enjoy. Perhaps with a con artist and thief, mingling with the crème de la crème to steal, seduce and ... well, then steal some more, or at least mooch off of a bit?

Thanks, Branwen. This is my very first attempt at running a group game, so I'm also pleasantly surprised at the interest, and of the caliber of writers expressing their interest! :)

It looks like we at least have enough interested players to warrant getting this RP off the ground, so I'll work up a character template, which I'll post later today. Once that's up, you all should feel free to post your character ideas in this thread. If people are totally stuck on what sort of character they'd like to make, maybe some posted characters will provide inspiration ... if not, feel free to PM me for ideas.

And my thanks to everyone so far who's taken the time to read and post in this thread, or to PM me about the game!

xPeachyPuff

Awesome concept here! I would like to express interest in this game and already have character concepts flooding my mind, haha. I adored the movie Titanic and love the history about it, though I can fairly say I am no History buff xD I don't know much about the 20's in general, but I'm not afraid to do a little digging if you'd have me.

I'm thinking of playing a female actress aboard the ship, if that would be alright. (: I'll think more about fleshing out a character and stuff while waiting to hear from everyone.

Thanks,

Okay - character template is up! Please look at the end of the initial post in this thread for the coding, I've edited that post and put the template there.

Also the post immediately following this one should  have two NPCs to use as a guideline for what I'm looking for. :)

In regards to history, and setting this in the 1920s - I'm not expecting details to be historically perfect, so don't worry too much about things ... but if parts of your character are clearly anachronistic in regards to the Roaring Twenties, I'll either be asking you to make some changes or revisions, or think of a new concept. I'm going for "looks close enough" in terms of a standard, if that makes sense. Hopefully too many aren't needed.

And as always, if there's questions, by all means, ask them, either in this thread, or by PM. :)

Once we have a couple of characters posted, I'll try to put together an OOC thread and a Characters thread in the NC: Human-Freeform Small Groups area.

Character Samples

These are two NPCs that I’ll be running for this RP. Hopefully this gives everyone a good idea of what I’m looking for in a submitted character, and perhaps provides some inspiration for anyone trying to think of a character concept.

Name: Captain Gareth Sinclair
Age: 50
Position: Crew Member; Captain of the RMS Mystic
Sexual Preferences: Straight
Appearance: Tall, always meticulously dressed, rarely smiles
Personality: Captain Sinclair is a no-nonsense man who is completely dedicated to his work. He’s a perfectionist, and demands that everything be done exactly as he demands. He’s also a patient man, though, and can be exceptionally kind and generous to members of his crew when orders are followed exactly as he wants. He has a rather dry sense of humor ... people often find it hard to tell whether he's joking with them or not.
Background: Captain Sinclair comes from a poor family in Liverpool. He joined the Royal Navy at an early age, and built an impressive career and reputation for himself in the Great War. During one particular battle later in the war, Captain Sinclair was forced to assume command of his ship after his commanding officer was killed in an attack, and his ability to remain calm and collected during the heat of battle made him a hero that day. He left the Navy with full honors in the early 1920s, and joined the White Star Line as a luxury ship captain shortly thereafter.

While Captain Sinclair is not the most senior captain amongst the White Star Line commanding officers, his attention to detail and cool demeanor under pressure made him the natural choice of the Board of Directors to make him captain of RMS Mystic for its maiden voyage. This earned him some jealousy amongst the other captains, but Captain Sinclair pays no heed to such snide comments and remarks. He looks forward to the challenge – and the fame – of being the Mystic’s first captain, and is determined to make the first journey of the ship as perfect as possible.

Name: Maggie Delaney
Age: 27
Position: First Class Passenger; Magician’s Assistant
Sexual Preferences: Bisexual; submissive; secretly into bondage and anal sex
Appearance: Slim, slender blonde, always dresses in the latest fashions, always appears quite cheerful
Personality: Maggie is a carefree, fun loving young woman. She’s a free spirit who lives for the moment, who loves a glass of champagne and a good party. She’s been the center of attention for a long time during her career in vaudeville and theater, and is eager to please. She’s not exactly the brightest girl in the world, but her eager, friendly disposition usually makes her well-liked by those she meets.
Background: Maggie was born the daughter of aerial circus performers – the Daring Delaneys, part of the world-famous Reginald Brothers Circus. She participated in the act with her family for some time, but shortly after the Great War, she met a stage magician named the Amazing Dashini. Maggie left the circus to become part of Dashini’s act, where she started to become famous in her own right, as part of Dashini’s famous “Vanishing Girl” trick … and she also began a secret affair with the dashing (and married) Dashini. It was also during this time that Dashini introduced her to the idea that handcuffs could be used for more than magic acts.

The Amazing Dashini just finished up a one-year-engagement in London, with a new one-year engagement in New York City set to begin in the beginning of October. Maggie was sent by the Amazing Dashini to head to New York early, to help set up the theater hosting their act. Always the showman, Dashini made sure to book Maggie aboard the Mystic to bring a little more attention to their act. She’s looking forward to socializing with the other first-class passengers aboard the Mystic, and to promote her act with the Amazing Dashini whenever she can!

Oh I can't wait!

I have so many ideas in my head...

ALY! You need to PM me with your ideas, cuz maybe then I can rustle something up and have our chars know each other or sumthin!

Ebb

Name: Clifford Thomson
Age: 26
Position: First Class Passenger
Sexual Preferences: Depressingly vanilla, with a whole host of dark kinky urges that have been successfully repressed up until now.
Appearance: Tall and broad shouldered. Always impeccably groomed, typically wearing well-pressed gray suit and starched shirt. Typically grim expression.
Personality: Straight-laced and proper to a fault, at least until he begins to fail to resist temptation. At the beginning of the voyage fairly taciturn and brooding.
Background: Clifford Thomson is a G-Man (though that term won't become common for a few years yet.) He is one of the bright young men straight out of law school brought into work for the Bureau of Investigation (B.O.I.) by recent Director J. Edgar Hoover. He loves his country and his job, believes that Prohibition is a moral imperative that will work out just fine if given a little more time, brushes his teeth three times a day and refrains from cursing and smoking. Music may be enjoyed on occasion, but dancing is right out.

Two months ago after a whirlwind romance Clifford was married to one June Marples, a free-thinking and carefree girl originally from New Orleans. The two seemed to epitomize the cliche of "opposites attract". Except that what seemed to be a happy relationship in public was anything but at home. One month ago they left on their delayed honeymoon, a European vacation culminating in first class passage back to the United States aboard the RMS Mystic, at the expense of most of Clifford's life savings. The vacation, intended to save their marriage, failed utterly at its purpose. Four days ago in Barcelona June left Clifford for a young bullfighter named Javier, citing Clifford's lack of passion and spontaneity, among other negative attributes.

Several hours ago Clifford boarded the RMS Mystic with a single ticket for a double-berth cabin, almost certainly heading for a major breakdown of one form or another. He wears a gold wedding band on his left hand and carries a Colt Police Positive Special in a shoulder holster under his suit jacket. (And if at least one of the two of those doesn't get thrown over the rail into the ocean at some point during the journey, then I have probably failed as a writer.)

Looks good, Ebb. Just one quick change - J. Edgar Hoover was the Director of the BOI, not Herbert Hoover. Small nitpick. ::)

But regardless ... your character is most definitely approved. Welcome aboard! :)

Name: Catherine Evelyn Porter
Age: 25.
Position: First Class Passenger; Actress.
Sexual Preferences: Bisexual with a preference for men - Submissive/Switch - O/O's

Appearance: Catherine stands at around 5’7” and weighs around 107lbs. She has a slender figure and because she is quite tall, has long, toned legs which could probable be her most notable feature, other then her obvious English accent that also tends to stand out quite a bit. Her skin is lightly tanned and well cared for; it's the kind of complexion that tans easily under the sun but doesn't burn as quickly. She has long, naturally wavy chestnut hair that reaches the bottoms of her shoulder blades and a pair of beautiful deep hazel eyes that are framed by dark, thick, voluminous lashes. Although she is quite slim, her feminine curves are still apparent.

Personality: Catherine is a very curious woman which can sometimes get her into trouble and other times can...No. It only ever gets her into trouble. She enjoys learning new things; whether that be a skill, facts from someone or lore/history from a book. She can sometimes seem unapproachable or a little intimidating, but that's simply the way she's started portraying herself since becoming an actress. The brunette can sometimes appear a little stuck up or perhaps snobby, but underneath it all is a loving, affectionate, interested girl.

Background: Catherine was brought up in very regal home in London, England; her mother and father wanted her to grow up the perfect lady and enlisted the help of many tutors and maids to watch her progression. Her tutors were kind and taught her of the world and its inhabitants and her maids cared for her and dressed her in the prettiest frocks. She grew up wondering about the world, about other cultures than her own and other walks of life; even though she learned as much as she possibly could, she would never know the true meaning behind each way without experiencing it for herself. When she first mentioned to her mother and father that she wished to travel and learn more, they completely denied it. Their excuse? She was a young lady and their young lady wasn't permitted to crawl about the world in search of adventure.

Catherine wasn't satisfied with spending the rest of her days learning to cook and tailor, among many other things, instead, she sought out acting as an escape from reality. When she became a little too ‘forward’ with her ideals, they both agreed that they would send her off to a ‘Ladies Finishing School’ in New York. It was quite a world away from them, but they eventually trusted the faculty enough to spend lots of their precious money flying her over. That only fueled her dreams further and she began searching for play production auditions in the area. After attending auditions, without letting her parents know what she was doing outside of her school, Catherine finally got cast for a minor role in a short stage production. She carried on attending auditions for other plays that the theater group was producing and was soon gaining more and more roles closer to the spot light; she couldn't help but feeling she had accomplished something. When her mother and father first found out via their daughters letters, they were angry with her and threatened to end her career until she told them of a man she’d been working with that was more dedicated to film production. He told her he helped out with the theater, since he had good expertise, but his paying job was a part of a film studio in New York. After signing a contract with ‘Comet Pictures’ and completing her first role in a feature film, Catherine was arranged to attend a five star cruise aboard the RMS Mystic by the company to make a public appearance and gain press. She found she simply couldn't refuse; she'd hardly ever been on a ship as big and luxurious as that and found that her adventurous side had sparked in her again. Catherine had always wanted to travel and this could be her chance to explore the waters in the comfort of an extravagant, safe environment.

Question Mark

Name: Sub-Divisional Inspector Walter Smith (Ret.)
Age: 35
Position: Steerage Passenger
Sexual Preferences: Straight, loyal to his wife
Appearance: See picture.  Wears the same outfit in day-to-day business.  He's a little rougher around the edges; since the photograph, his nose has been broken, but was improperly set, giving it a slight bent.  He also seems to have some difficulty shaving on a regular basis, and often has a chinful of scruff.
Personality: Serious, solemn, and a bit rough around the edges when it comes to manners and temperament, but he's got a good heart and a driven mindset underneath it all.  Insatiably curious and a proud supporter of rationality and logic.
Background: Born and raised in the London East End.  Joined the Metro Police at 18, rose slowly but steadily through the ranks over the next decade and a half, reaching Sub-Divisional Inspector.  Married, two daughters.  In January 1928, his wife, Mary, miscarried their third child, and their youngest daughter died of pneumonia less then a month later.  Crushed, Walter took to the drink and eventually made a drunken spectacle of himself in New Scotland Yard.  His superiors were willing to overlook the incident on account of the deaths, but they were forced to offer him retirement and discharge by their own bosses.  Jobless, their savings account dwindling rapidly, and unable to move past the deaths of their daughter and unborn child, Walter and Mary decided to restart their lives.  They would leave London behind, emigrate to New York City (especially attractive due to America's enforced Prohibition), and start a fresh life with their remaining daughter, Lilah.  Walter plans to travel ahead on the RMS Mystic's maiden voyage with the majority of their remaining capital, intending to find a residence and job in New York for his family to come home to.

Name: (Stage name)Velvet Posch(As her friends know her, true name Cora Perkins)
Age: 30
Position: First Class Passenger
Sexual Preferences: Hetero/Dominant/Switch

Appearance: Velvet is rather tall, statuesque even, but has generous curves. Her hair is long and deeply black, with eyes of an intense ice blue.

Personality: Velvet is a woman who knows what she wants, and knows how to get it. She comes from New Money, spends it freely, and doesn't care about any sort of 'scandal' she might bring on. Though outwardly she shows herself to be a free spirit, she wishes deep down she might find a man who wants to get to know the real Cora, not the performer Velvet.

Background: Cora had to scratch and claw, and even fuck her way to the top. It took her awhile, but she managed it finally. Top billing is what Velvet Posch eventually received, playing all the high class shows with her Burlesque troop. She remained on top for a long time, long enough to catch the eye of a rather handsome, if not much older Hotel Magnate.

Eventually she fell for the mans determined wooing, how could she not? He ravished her with jewels and furs and cars and trips, and she found herself actually fond of the man. She married him, taking his surname Perkins, and they lived quite happily for several years. During this time, Velvet met a lovely young lady by the name of Lady Abigail. Velvet never had many females friends, as most women turned their nose up at not only her profession, but how she married into her riches. But Abby was different. Sweetly innocent, but wanting to see the slightly darker side of the world, a world that Velvet knew about. They became fast friends.

But smack in the middle of her fairy-tale life, Velvet's husband died in a tragic hunting accident. She found herself however, now independently wealthy, as her husband, having no other family, left her his millions. She has also found herself shunned in all the new circles she had mingled within with her husband, now deemed not worthy of their company, being an ex stripper. So it was she decided to take a trip upon the RMS Mystic, and she decided to drag her friend Abigail with her.

Hey Question Mark,

I really like the basic premise of the character - I have three possible questions/concerns, though:

1. So, Walter's traveling with his wife Mary? Who will be playing her, then - some other player, or is will she be a NPC?

2. Also, is he/are they traveling with their daughter Lilah as well? How old is she?

I'll be honest - I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea of the daughter being there, particularly if she's young. This might not necessarily be a smut-filled RP ... but it might, and I'd like to avoid any age-related issues that might crop up. Even if she's conveniently kept "off-screen" the whole time, I think it's a potential headache that I'd personally rather avoid. Also, unless some other player is going to be playing the wife, I'm not sure I like the idea of the wife being there - it means you're essentially running two connected characters, QM, or I'm running Mary as a NPC, and I'd rather not run any more NPCs than I have to as a first-time GM. :)

I would suggest that either some other player run Walter's wife Mary, or have him traveling on the Mystic ahead of his wife and daughter (a common practice back then) - he's going to New York to find a job and a place to live, and when that's accomplished, he'll then send for the rest of his family.

Finally ...

3. Personality: TBD - I'll need a basic personality type for him before I can approve him. It's more for me - I need to have an idea of what all the characters are like before we get started. His personality can certainly evolve as the game rolls along, but I at least need a starting point for Walter.

Hi bubby,

I like the basic character concept a lot - just one question, similar to the ones directed at Question Mark:

Who's playing Abigail? Is she a NPC, or will some other player be running her?

As before, I'd prefer that Abigail not be an outright NPC, so if someone else isn't going to be running her, then I'd prefer for her to be dropped from the background.  (If someone else is running Abigail, though, then kindly feel free to ignore everything I've written in this particular post. :) )

Abigail is going to be Alysanthia's char darlin', which she will have up soon-ish!  :-)

And all three legitimate concerns.  I anticipated Lilah would be trouble, but I also didn't want something as morose as all of his children dying.  For the record, I intended to keep her offscreen pretty much all the time, just referred to.  However, I like your solution of him traveling ahead of his family (why didn't I think of that?), so I'll run with it.  :)

The TBD personality thing is something I do for all of my characters.  I've never liked laying out someone's personality from the get-go, I prefer to let it develop spontaneously, but I'll add my current personality conceptualization for Walter.  No problemo, senorita.

EDIT: Edited the profile.

Alysanthia

Name: Lady Abigail Maria Evenwood

Age:19

Position: First Class Passenger

Sexual Preferences: Hetrosexual-Submissive.

Appearance: A little on the short side, Abigail though having petite body type she does have curves hidden under the loose gowns she favors. Spiral blond hair that reaches her shoulders when worn loose. Always dressed in the finest and latest trends, Abigail takes a small bit of pride in her appearance. Applying only a little make-up she has little need for most cosmetics. Bright brown eyes framed with thick lashes often show a spark, a hint that there is more than she seems.

Personality: Polite and always well mannered, Abigail is never outspoken almost reserved in most social settings. Yet she longs to be able to speak her mind and do as she wishes. Abigail has dreams of living a life free of social decrees and the threat of marriage looming over her head.

Background: A daughter of Old Money, Abigail was given the best things in life. Education, clothing, food, and whichever her heart desired. Yet she never really cared for such things. All she wanted was a life of her own, not one set up for her since the day her mother found out she was pregnant.

Day after day was filled with lessons- singing, dancing, piano, flower arranging, how to be a proper lady, what to wear, how to act, and the list just went on and on. All quiet boring and all for the soul purpose of finding Abigail a proper husband. Abigail loved her books and the places they were able to take her, an escape from the everyday hustle and bustle of her family's ways.

When she was told about 'Velvet' and how scandalous she acted Abigail was curious. Here was a woman doing everything she was taught not to. Quickly though she became enamored by the outspoken Cora. Happy to finally have a friend that didn't care about the social ladder.

Usually shunned at parties now due to her associating with Widow Perkins, Abigail considers herself lucky. She is showing her parents she doesn't need them to be happy, that she could have friends of her own choosing and not care what they think.

Fearing for their child her family quickly set about finding a proper suitor for their slowly becoming wayward daughter.

The day she found out her parents had found a husband for their daydreaming daughter, Abigail panicked. Running to Cora for comfort she soon found herself packing for a trip, still amazed at how easily she was convinced into accompany her friend.

IrishWolf

Name: Francis MacNamara
Age: 47
Position: Crew, Stoker Foreman/fireman
Sexual Preferences: Dominant, straight
Appearance: Francis is a tall and powerfully built man, standing near to six feet, with a ruddy complexion from hours and hours standing in front of roaring boiler fires over the years. His hair is a dark brown color and kept trimmed short. His hands and arms are covered with old burn scars, most small, from where the flames licked his skin when he was first a stoker.
Personality: A boisterous sailor, he enjoys a healthy amount of drink and his pipe, when the company of women is unavailable. Three things fill him with pride; the first being his position as a stoker, that he is strong enough to do some of the hardest work aboard ship, the second is his Dewey Medal and the third is his mustache.
Background: Francis was born in San Francisco in 1881, a second generation Irish-American, who's family had come over during the California Gold Rush. As a boy, he was always hanging out around the docks and at the tender age of fourteen, he lied his way (about his age) into the American Navy. By the outbreak of the Spanish–American War in 1898, then seventeen year old Francis was serving aboard the USS Olympia of the Asiatic Squadron, in the boiler room, due to his size. It was his great pleasure to have been shoveling coal at a feverish rate, during the Battle of Manila Bay and to have received the Dewey Medal afterwards. Like many of the stokers aboard then Commodore Dewey's squadron, he believes his part in keeping the armored cruisers moving, to be of equal importance to any gunners, in the outcome of the battle.

After the decommissioning of the Olympia and his enlistment being up in 1899, he took work with the White Star Line and served for a short time aboard the HMHS Britannic before reenlisting in the American Navy in 1915, after the sinking of the RMS Lusitania . In a quirk of fate, he found himself serving aboard his beloved Olympia again, when she was recommissioned in 1917, spending the war patrolling the Eastern coast or escorting convoys. When the war ended, he remained in the American Navy and aboard Olympia, when she sailed for the Mediterranean and Adriatic, during the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War and was board in 1921, when she carried the remains of World War I's Unknown Soldier from France to Washington, DC and managed to end his enlistment in 1922, when USS Olympia was once again, decommissioned.

Afterwards, he again signed with the White Star Line and served aboard RMS Olympic before being transferred by request to the RMS Mystic.

My partner may not be able to make the game.  If not, does anyone need a maid or generic servant, or perhaps the ship itself does?

Zillah

The Mystic, like modern cruise ships, is essentially a giant floating luxury hotel.

So yes - maids, cooks, waitresses, laundresses, and all sorts of support staff would be needed (and would be considered part of the ship's crew). Just an option for you to consider. :)

Branwen

Thank you so much, Zillah.  You're an amazingly responsive GM.

Appearance: (Brief written description in addition to picture)
Personality: Holly was the type of woman that made the most of the roaring twenties.  Sassy, impulsive, curious and full of energy, the freedom this time is bringing women brought Holly the time of her life.  Holly was also quite bright, a jack of all trades (but a master of none), and had a knack for finding herself with questionable company.  One of her best and worst traits was her hedonistic tendencies, which made her a lot of fun to be around, but also quite self destructive.
Background: Holly's bad habits probably came from her upbringing.  Her parents were both hardworking individuals who managed to work their way from the bottom up to the upper-middle class, and spoilt their daughter silly.  After she turned ten she never wanted for anything, she ended up needing to make her own difficulties and problems, a habit that would only become worse after she hit puberty.   At least Holly's three other younger siblings would grow up to follow in their parent's footsteps.

It was a miracle that she managed to finish college at all.  Her grades were actually quite impressive, which surprised everyone, and this time in a good way.  The buzz of that miracle didn't last long, because a few months after her graduation, Holly's father passed away in a traffic accident.

Her father was obviously the real bread winner of the family, and her mother's salary would not be able to support the tuition of the rest of the Stern family.  Holly, not wanting her siblings to sacrifice their brighter futures, jumped in to action to grab the first job that would have her, with the least amount of drama and politics she could find.

hello, i am wondering if it possable to add a racial element to the the story. I want to make a black officer as part of the crew. I know in the 1920's there was a lot of racism. He would be English not American, which is how he became a officer. just a idea let me know.

now here's my character, hope she's good

Name: Bellinda Oakfield
Age: 19
Position: First Class Passenger
Sexual Preferences:submissive, straight.
Personality: Bellinda, or Bel as her acquaintances and friends call her has is shy around people. fleets around in the background like a specter only noticed for her beauty. Always smiling and polite towards others as she has been taught. Following the rules of her class almost ideally as she was taught in her boarding school.

Background: Bellinda was born to a noble family. Her father was a successful politician and her mother a true lady who had given him the privilege of two daughters aside from Bellinda. Being the youngest she was the spoiled child of the family, given whatever she wants whenever she wants and was overly protected from the harms of society it was normal for the girl to submit to the rules.

She was sent to a boarding school where she had the rest of her education, when she returned home at the age of 18 she already had developed a sense of self esteem and her spirit started to spread its wings in secret. She had a curious nature and wanted to reach beyond the limits of her class which wasn't approved by her family. As a result she acted that she has returned to following the rules and secretly searched for ways to fulfill her curiosity. Her family wanted her to be doing something useful to get her mind astray from her "wild thoughts" as they called it.

She had taken into painting and writing, keeping a secret diary where she writes fictional adventures of herself discovering what she always wanted to do, and painting photos to ease her stress. Her talent was soon known among the ranks of her class and her family has rested assured that their daughter is back on track to what they consider the suitable and righteous way of their family and class. Bel continued to behave as she was requested publicly and secretly seeking to fulfill her soul's desire to know more and be more free from society's regulations and manners.

It was a fateful day, or night, that her mother walked past her door and heard the muffled squeals of her daughter, opening the door she finds Bellinda in her bed with a man ... and not any man, it was their old gardner. Horrified at what she found the poor woman screams and faints, the gardener tries to escape but is caught by the father who shoots him with his gun. He's unable to kill his daughter though, the daughter who shamelessly stood defiant in front of the whole family to claim her freedom. The only solution was to send her to her aunt who lives in New York under the care of the family's best friend who was given a different reason to the girl's journey.

So There was Bel, scheduled to sail on board the RMS Mystic on her way to marriage as the family announced, and to her freedom as she had planned.

Hi CarnivorousBunny,

So, I guess you're still looking for passengers?  I have one conundrum (which I run into often).  I don't think I've seen any other writers writing a male role that is at least bisexual, so that means that if I were to write a character, he'd be strictly interacting for story purposes only since I only write sexy time scenes with other male characters.

As far as my concept, I was thinking of a rich oil tycoon.  Not the man who had struck it rich but perhaps his son who had joined the family business.  I was hoping I might see if anyone would play his 'partner.'  Being that it's the twenties, not many people advertised that they were anything but straight, so he would explain their relationship was purely business and that the other man worked for him while hiding their true relationship.

Hi Ryven,

A "five day journey" is all relative ... I've been in RPs here on E where it's taken close to a year of real time for the story to move three days of game time! ::) All I can say is that should everything go well, the game should be going for awhile - I don't anticipate this being something that's over in just a few weeks of real time or so.

Also, this ...

Wasn't Gilligan's Island a three hour tour?  :)
... and the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 were supposed to go from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, California in just a day. Things happen. >:)

And yes, I'm still looking for more passengers and crew - probably not for too much longer, though. I'll probably leave this open for another day, and then close out this recruitment thread sometime tomorrow so I can focus on creating a OOC thread and getting the game started.

Hello again Ryven,

Sorry about that ... was answering your first queries while you posted your second batch of questions!

Yes, at the moment we don't have any bisexual/gay male characters. If you would like to have your character having some naughty fun, then, you may want to see if you can recruit someone else into the game who'll make a character that meets your requirements. :) I'll also see if any of the players I know on E would be interested in playing a bisexual/gay male character.

The basic character concept you've provided is great. I hope that you'll post a more detailed version of the character soon. :)

An author character would be terrific, DTW.

hello, i am wondering if it possable to add a racial element to the the story. I want to make a black officer as part of the crew. I know in the 1920's there was a lot of racism. He would be English not American, which is how he became a officer. just a idea let me know.

Hey zenpai,

Some quick research leads me to believe that while this wasn't common, this would be plausible. A stint in the Royal Navy would probably be a good idea for your character's background, explaining where he got his initial seafaring experience. But I'm fine with your basic character concept.

Possible jobs/ranks would be First Officer, Second Officer, Quartermaster, or whatever other appropriate rank you like that isn't Captain. :)

~waves to Branwen shyly~ thank you :)

now here's my character, hope she's good

Bellinda's a great character, Miva. Approved!

Hi Ryven,

I think that as Clifford spirals down into iniquity it's entirely possible that he would be open to homosexual encounters. But (A) it would be more of a visit than a permanent destination, and (B) it probably wouldn't happen until two or three days into the trip, so could be weeks or months realtime. In other words, I would agree that looking for a more full-time prospect would be a good idea. I do like the idea of your character a lot.

Zillah, question. Who would Velvet ask about possibly putting on a performance? I know you have the Captain as a NPC, but will he be available enough to ask?

Velvet wouldn't directly ask the Captain about such things - for that matter, he probably wouldn't be available to many of the passengers, unless he runs into them at a formal event on the ship.

Velvet would instead be directed to the Purser aboard the Mystic - the Purser was in charge of what was called the Victualling Department, which was comprised of all the maids, stewards, cooks, entertainers, and all crew members not directly involved in the running of the ship.

Should no one create a character that takes on the Purser's role, I'll make sure to have one available as a NPC.

That would be an interesting twist, and my character wouldn't be against it.  The arrangement I plan for he and his partner to have is that it is a relationship of convenience, so he's not opposed to stepping out, as it were.

Ryven

Name: Chase Dunham (right)
Age: 24
Position: First Class Passenger
Sexual Preferences: Gay, switch
Personality: Toward women, he is the utmost gentleman.  Cordial, chivalrous, proper, polite, and gentle.  Toward men, he is domineering, competitive, sometimes cocky and entitled.

Background: Chase's family began in the middle class.  His father was a well-to-do banker making enough money to provide his family a comfortable living.  On a bargain, he bought a large plot of land where he invested his money tapping for oil.  Luckily, it paid off, and the Dunham's were launched into the high life of society.  Chase joined his father only a few years after completing his studies at his university in economics.  His father, Charles, continues to oversee the main operations of the oil fields while Chase has taken it upon himself to handle the financial aspect of the company.

He had found a company based in England who manufactures parts needed for the company which is why he traveled overseas.  Chase negotiated the sale of these parts while enjoying the sights.  During his stay, he met an Englishman who captured his fancy.  The man was of modest means and looking for a way to get to America.  Chase was his ticket and the price was one to be paid in private.

I think my background may be a little short, but this is what I could come up with in short notice.  I'll come up with more ideas and see if I can find someone to play his partner.

I wouldn't mind at all.  I'm really only looking for someone willing to go along with the arrangement part the two of them have.  After that, whoever plays him will have free reign over what the character is and will do.  They can even go off and do m/f scenes with the understanding that Chase is basically footing the bill and thus 'in charge' in a way.

Also, I never thanked Zillah for getting back to me, so thank you, Zillah. :-)

More people to have fun with! Yay!  However, since your character is going to be either in steerage or a worker, Chase is unlikely to see him as anything more than a means to an end.

Haibane

Name: Clarisse Block
Age: 25
Position: First Class Passenger
Sexual Preferences: Straight, but has 'entertained' girls once or twice - though sufficiently rarely for her to not think of herself as bisexual. Due to her success in her industry she can act quite dominant in the bedroom which surprises many of her lovers since her film roles often cast her in the "vulnerable little girl" role, always being whisked away by masked baddies or saved by dashing heroes. At other times, such as on the casting couch, she will happily submit.
Appearance: Clarisse has intense dark brown eyes and while her film fans know her only in black and white, many are surprised upon meeting her, to find she has a head of flaming intense red hair. While the severely controlled bob and the flat-breasted look is all the rage this season, Clarisse continues to wear her hair in her signature "wild boy" cut, a style quite unlike any other lady of the silver screen and she flaunts her very curvaceous and neatly put together figure. In her film roles she often does bedroom scenes in satin and silk night dresses or bathing scenes in swimsuits because of her buxom shape.
Personality: Clarisse is outgoing, bubbly and cheerful and a relentless party girl, although much of this is a front to hide her tired inner self, hollow from overwork and lonely from a lack of deep friendships. She does not smoke but drinks to excess, usually G&T.
Background: Clarisse was born in Tottenham, north London, a working class girl and as a child was a maid servant to a family of the English nobility. During the war when Baron Wentworth went to command a brigade in France, the household was downsized and Clarisse returned to live with her father, a travelling itinerant fairground showman. She never knew her mother who was a drunk and ran away from the baby Clarisse and her husband soon after Clarisse was born. Her father Tom would set up his stall at local fairs, and at the ends of seaside piers to entertain the "Sunday strollers". At these places the teenaged Clarisse would give impromptu singing acts as well as dances and her big break came one day just after the war when a London vaudeville producer saw her and offered her and her father a contract on the spot.

From small-time vaudeville theatre and matinee shows Clarisse worked her way up as a singer and dancer until a movie mogul spotted her and gave her a part on the big screen. Her first silent movie "The Mystic Angel" (1922) was an astounding hit, Clarisse's signature look of the "innocent girl with a knowing smile" was hugely popular and a successful string of silent reels followed, producing them at a rate of three a year. "The Sandboy", "When Dawn Comes", "Arabian Prince", "Molly Knuckles and the Cat Boy", "Moonstruck" and "Dahlia and the Dancing Fawns" are among her many well-known movies.

Clarisse's skill is as a dancer and singer and now the age of the talkie is here, she has signed up a contract with the Hollywood casting director Abraham Bartok Maroon who has contracted her to tap-dance and sing in a new talking movie "The Forty-Niners" that is being shot in California. Clarisse has booked her cabin in first class on board the RMS Mystic because the name links her to her first successful silent movie and she hopes this voyage will be the start of new things.

In truth, Clarisse hides behind a smiling face and is almost on the point of nervous collapse. She has worked far too hard in the last six years and has been prescribed amphetamine pills to keep her going, to which she is now addicted, as well as becoming an alcoholic. The talkies offer a less arduous schedule, being produced, usually at the rate of one to two a year and she hopes that if she can earn big bucks in America she might soon have enough to retire and rest... and find a husband. A true and close friend is someone she has never had and she yearns to have that hole in her life filled.

Correct me if I'm wrong and I'm basing this solely on the movie, but does the captain lead the sunday religious service or does he simply attend?  People would run into him there if they're looking to talk with him.  That also depends on if the 5 day journey includes a sunday which it very well might.

Haibane

Captains of prestigious passenger vessels did have some contact with the public. There may be special (rare) invitations to tour the bridge and chart room and the captain might meet a passenger there. Unlike Capt Smith of the Titanic who was a rather cold and private fellow, there was usually a Captain's Table at evening dinner where a select dozen or so might get the opportunity to speak with him at some length, though of course protocol would require that he not be monopolized by a few of the guests, he would need to make polite conversation with them all. This though was the chief way to get to see inside the personality of a captain, should a guest (first class only of course) be so lucky as to receive an invite.

There would be a ship's chaplain who would lead the Sunday service but the Captain would probably attend and might read a lesson from the Bible.

Character Audition
Name: Shannon Elizabeth McPhee
Age: 17
Position: Crew Member - maid
Sexual Preferences: Lesbian
Appearance: A life of work has made Shannon Elizabeth appear a few years older than she really is.  Indecisively blue eyes peer out from a freckled pale-skinned face topped with a reasonably under control mass of red-brown hair.  Shannon Elizabeth is short, not even five feet tall due to poor nutrition growing up and has an indeterminate body buried underneath her maid's dress and apron.  Scuffed and very workmanlike black boots are visible beneath the hem of her dress.  When she speaks, Shannon Elizabeth has a very down country Irish accent and is obviously uneducated.
Personality: Shannon Elizabeth knows she is lucky to have her position on the White Star's pride and is very scared of losing it.  She's not shy but she is self-effacing and tries to remain in the background as much as possible around the upper class passengers and the officers of the crew.  Among her own kind she's as fun and outspoken as many of the girls though she doesn't flirt at all with the rough men - or even the gentle ones.
Background: Maiden, mother or sister; these are the choices available to Irish girls from families to poor the phrase dirt poor sounds luxurious.  Shannon Elizabeth's too flighty to be a Sister and wed to Christ.  She finds the idea of being a mother terrifying and so maiden is the only choice left.  Maiden and maid, she started service when she was still a bitty girl, working below stairs at one of the English interloper's homes.  Shannon Elizabeth worked for the estate for the next 9 years then took a chance and went with another one of the girls to see about a job with the steamship lines.  They were booming in the huge rush of new money and were desperate for hands of all sorts, even ones that scrubbed pots and floors and made beds.  Shannon Elizabeth worked on the Vedic on the Liverpool-Australia
run but has been moved to Mystic along with many other girls to outfit the new flagship.  Currently she works all jobs as the rotations are being sorted out.  She has some training as a lady's dressing maid and child minder though she's neither nanny nor governess.

Haibane has the right of it (as she usually does!) :) A ship's chaplain would lead the religious services, but the Captain would most certainly attend them.

The ship is scheduled to depart on September 12, 1928 - a Wednesday. Arrival time is presently scheduled for Sunday evening, on September 16th.

Captain Sinclair (the commander of the Mystic) is somewhere between the Titanic's Captain Smith and a conventional White Star Lines captain in terms of temperament - he was assigned to the Mystic's maiden voyage primarily to insure that absolutely nothing goes wrong. (Famous last words ...) However, he would be available at the Sunday service, and at the evening meal at the Captain's table, and a few other events. It's not good for business if the Captain annoys your highest-paying passengers, after all! However, Captain Sinclair does limit those appearances and availability to a handful of the first-class passengers.

A ghost might be interesting.  After all, I'm sure at least a few workers would have died in production of the ship.  There was enough time, many dangerous jobs, and a lack of work safety to make stuff like that happen.

Bit of a rush job since I usually take more time getting my characters written out, but nonetheless -- for your discerning eyes:

Quote
Name: Nobili Armando d'Elario
Age:  32
Position: First Class Passenger, Italian Nobleman
Sexual Preferences: straight, dominant; seduces the submissive and dabbles with the occasional bondage when in the right mood, but actually falls only for fellow dominants, preferring a partner who can give as good as she gets.
Appearance: Dark hair, dark eyes, tall and lean. With a boyish smile full of mischief and a confident gaze, he looks the adventurous type, but also projects a sense of refinement, class and decadence that is entirely at ease with itself. He generally underplays his own physicality, but underneath his clothes is the body of an athlete and acrobat, as quick to jump into readiness as a switchblade.

Dressed in suits of varying colors, impeccably as a gentleman of his times, he always walks with a cane, though he doesn't appear to actually need one and uses it mostly as an accessory. In reality, the cane is reinforced and lined with steel -- not a sword-cane, but still an effective blunt instrument when necessary.

Personality:  full of mischief and hot-headed, quick to leap to a lady's defense and fall in love over a pretty face. Honest and straightforward.

Well, or so he'd like you to think. In actuality, he's quite the accomplished liar and imposter. Far from being the nobleman he pretends to be, his real reason for being on the ship is to steal from the wealthy and, ideally, find a rich woman to seduce, bedazzle and rob blind of senses and part of her possessions. Though clearly criminal, Armando does like to think of himself as honorable, so he tries not to steal more than his victims can reasonably afford to lose while maintaining their lifestyle.

He generally doesn't fall for his marks as a matter of professionalism. Though he of course is only human, he views it more as a challenge and game than anything else, with personal feelings coming into play only when he encounters an equal.

Background:
Armando grew up as a street urchin, without a last name, in Venice and was soon recruited into one of those classic child-thief schemes, learning how to pick-pocket and skulk in the shadows and alleys without being seen. He was good at it, too. Come puberty, he found that he worked particularly well with one of his fellow thieves, a pretty girl called Elena. When hormones inevitably led to more than just a friendly work relationship, things quickly became worse for the both of them, as the man who was leading the whole gang shindig was neither nice, nor particularly tolerant of youthful fancies.

To spare the grisly details, it ended with young Armando, fifteen at the time, a murderer. He had stabbed his former mentor to death, after Elena had found a rather tragic end at the man's hands. Bereft of his unpleasant but still sole father figure and first love, now not just a criminal but also a murderer, Armando was forced to flee from Venice.

The things he knew to do were largely unhelpful for a life as a productive member of society, so he quickly fell back into his career as a thief. With his heart broken and traumatized, he soon found that the work of a gigolo came easy to him as well -- it seemed simple to keep other people at arm's length, emotionally, and he found that his handsome face and lack of inhibitions made for a winning combination.

Still, he'd never have gotten much further without the attention of one Lady Adriana del Ezzelin. A noblewoman and widow in her thirties, she took an interest in the young man and decided to see that the diamond in the rough received a little polish to bring out his edges. While he was not one to complain about spending time in a rich household and being treated like a young lord, she effectively forced a classic education onto Armando and had him tutored in various subjects that, despite his initial unwillingness, he took to quite well. Writing, other languages, history, the arts, even fencing, everything he needed to function in high society -- and, ultimately, to pass himself of as one of them.

He never found out why exactly the Lady decided to put that much effort and resources into him. The youth, though grateful, had no interest in finding out and, with intentions to stand on his own two feet, fled the country entirely before Adriana could ask for a recompense … even if that would have been for him to stay with her out of obligation.

So, free as a proverbial bird and with pockets full of expensive jewelry, he set out to the neighboring Germany, where he spent some time mooching off of the local high society and working further on his social skills. The political climate didn't sit too well with him, however, and eventually he left for England. He had good times there, but it's never a smart thing for a conman to stick around in one place for too long.

The RMS Mystic presented a great opportunity -- not only would it bring him to New York City, but it would give him a head start, with plenty of exploitable members of high society among the passengers.

Also, Zillah, I'm wondering ... was there any particular inspiration for your choice of nickname, if it's not too personal a question?  :-)

Zillah, could you make use of a player who showed up at irregular intervals -- as cued by you, if you like -- to play a ghost, random backwards-speaking Lynchian dwarf and/or other bizarre/creepy phenomena? I don't know if I could take on a regular character in this setting but I think I could deliver periodic bursts of random Strange pretty credibly, it would be a fun thing to try.

Hi CJ,

Unfortunately, at the moment, no. I have some pretty specific ideas of what the supernatural elements are going to be, and I'd like them to remain firmly in GM hands.

Appreciate your interest and your enthusiasm, though!

It's my honor to approve your character, Haibane. She's perfect for this RP. Welcome aboard! :)

Also, Zillah, I'm wondering ... was there any particular inspiration for your choice of nickname, if it's not too personal a question?  :-)

Really great character, VonDoom - approved, and happy to have him as part of this RP!

And no, it's not too personal. It started out as a rather complicated and probably-too-difficult to explain in-joke - I was Zillah, and one of my friends was Adah. Later on it became something I used as a stage name, and then as an online name, since I grew to like it a lot!

Shannon's a cutie ... and maids are certainly needed. Approved!

This interest in this has been even greater than I anticipated - which is a good thing! - so I'm going to formally close character applications sometime tomorrow. Note: If you expressed interest in making a character in this thread or by PM prior to this thread being closed for applications, you can still send me your characters directly to me for approval by PM. I just won't be accepting any new inquiries from anyone after the thread closes for new characters.

I'm also probably going to need a co-GM to help manage things, so if anyone's interested, please PM me directly.

OOC and Character Threads will be up either Thursday or Friday. I'm hoping to have opening threads written this weekend, and we should be able to get rolling on this RP either by Sunday evening, or no later than this coming Monday.

Hello Zillah,

I am very interested in playing in this very interesting concept of yours.  I still have some collaborating to do with my in game writing partner (Secretwriter) as far as plotting goes. So there may be more added to the Bio at some point. But I wanted to let you know about our interest before you closed the game to new applications.

~grins~

Name: Jordan Cobblestone

Age: 36

Position: First Class Passenger

Sexual Preferences: Dominant, Straight

Appearance: 5'8" lean but fit. Dark brown hair almost black, side burns, wicked smile and expressive eyebrows

Personality: Top cat of his universe in full control of both his own and soon to be 'Trophy Wife's destiny.  (Future Trophy Wife to be played by Secretwriter)  Mr. Cobblestone is very possessive of his possession's including the future Mrs. Cobblestone.

Background: 1st born son of a multimillionaire cattle rancher out of Texas Jordan's path was laid out before him even before he was born.  Three years after taking over his father's business oil was discovered in a little used portion of the ranch.  This discovery combined with Jordan's strong mind for business matters nearly tripled the family fortune seemingly overnight.

Mr. Cobblestone spent a great deal of time adding to the family fortune but he also took the time to enjoy all that life had to offer.  He absolutely loved going to the theater.  Whether it be for plays, opera's or to hear some new symphony play one could always count on seeing one of the towns most eligible bachelor arrive with some new young lady in tow.  When asked by his parents when he planned to settle down with one woman and get married he always replied, "Only if and when I find the most absolutely perfect woman for me will I consider settling down."  When asked about what this perfect woman would be like he would only smile and say, "I don't know yet but I'll know her when I see her."

While many saw the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic as the beginning of the end of the White Star Line.  Mr. Cobblestone saw it as a business opportunity of a life time.  And quickly set his shrewd business mind to the task of buying up as many shares of the shipping line as he could possibly get his hands on.  For this he had actually made the long trip to Liverpool where he privately and semi secretly set about making his purchases.  He had been living in Europe for nearly a year when his business there finally drew to a close.

About a month before he was to set sail back to America he was given tickets to a new play along with a back stage pass to meet the cast and crew.  It was there he finally found the most absolutely perfect woman for him.  A Miss Mary Agnes Hawthorne who caught and held his attention from the very moment he first saw her walk on to the stage.  The whole month that he had spent with her had been by far the grandest month of his life up to that point.  It nearly broke his heart when it came time to leave but they vowed to keep in touch and it was a vow that both of them kept.

A year later also keeping to his word he returned back to her loving embrace vowing never to leave her again.  Two weeks before the RMS Mystic was to leave on her maiden voyage Mr. Cobblestone had knelt down on one knee to propose to the one and only person he completely trusted and loved.

Chrystal

Zillah, Branwen and Haibain all in the same game? How could I resist!

Name: Mme Yvonne Chabat

Age: 32

Position: First Class Passenger

Sexual Preferences: Switch, Lesbian but not above spanking the occasional naughty little boy!

Appearance: Short, at only 157cm, her hair is naturally curly. Her figure is somewhat full which due to her short stature makes her look plump. In fact she is very fit, weighs 61 Kilos and most of her curves are muscle. Her eyes are deep brown, her skin is bronzed by the Mediterranean sun. She likes to wear the latest flapper fashions, but only in black.

Personality: Yvonne is an outrageous flirt with the ladies. She is more than willing to chase after any woman that catches her eye, and is even happier to have women chase her. She is happy-go-lucky, rich, and adventurous. She can, to some, seem cold and unfeeling, and she is by no means ready to have any sort of permanent relationship. Rather, she is looking to play the field, see how many young women she can seduce to her bed. She may even be interested in seducing a young man or two if they were the right sort and didn't mind waking up the next morning with a lot of bruises...

Background: Yvonne was born in Marseilles to Katerine and Claude Orfèvre. At seventeen years old, she was married to Ernest Chabat, who was twice her age and owned a number of very successful businesses in Marseilles, including a bank, a fish canning plant, a number of theatres and one of the new-fangled moving image theatres. He also enjoyed a lucrative trade shipping guns across the Mediterranean to North Africa, for the Foreign Legion.

Not surprisingly, Ernest Chabat was very rich, which was the only reason Yvonne agreed to marry him. Her parents had been delighted at such a wonderful match, but Yvonne had no interest in men whatever. The fact that a good Jewish man in good standing with his fellow man had asked for her hand was neither here nor there.

Ernest managed to stay out of the Great War by insisting that he was far more valuable to France running his gun factory. The word "profiteering" was an ugly one and he insisted he was not at every opportunity. After the war ended, Ernest and Yvonne stayed in Marseilles until the fateful day, just over a year ago when Ernest was driving his brand new Renault 40cv Tourer along a mountain road, lost control and crashed. The young woman in the motor car with him was later identified as Yvonne's social secretary. Both were killed instantly.

Of course, Yvonne inherited everything. She is on the ship to America to get away from the ugly rumours circulating around Marseilles that she had something to do with her husband's death, that the brakes on his car had been some how tampered with, and that she was jealous because he had stolen the girl from her.

Hey Nim,

Glad to have you here! Looking forward to seeing your character (& Secret's!) when they're completed. :)

One nitpick - during most of the Twenties, the economy was booming, particularly in the oil industry. The Great Depression didn't start until the fall of 1929 - two years after this RP takes place. So if you can remove the references to "economic depression", that works much better. Thanks!

Name: Mary Agnes Hawthorne

Age:  24. 5'1, 118lbs

Sexual Preferences: Bisexual leaning toward men, submissive to men, but not to women.

Personality: Fun, brash, and a little bit lewd, Mary Agnes grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, lower middle class with lots of siblings. She's used to having to share everything that she's ever possessed and only has one thing that has ever been entirely hers, which is a locket that was given to her by her namesake, Mary Agnes Bennett, her maternal great-grandmother.  Always just a bit on the wild side, she has spent more time pretending to be a bad ass than truly being one, as her goals are to become a silver screen starlet, she acts in a small stage troupe that does a lot of classical plays such as Shakespeare, though she doesn't find the man to be so very bloody brilliant.

She has had only a hand full of male lovers though she pretends or alludes to the possibility of having more, though she neither confirms nor denies this.  She has been fairly chaste due to the fact that she doesn't want to have a child and get her career derailed before it truly got started. She has spent more of her sexual time with women for that reason.

Though she has always found being a lady to be overrated, she tries to display her manners everywhere but the bedroom with her fiancé, one Mr. Jordan Cobblestone, whom she loves to pieces. She prays that he never thinks that she's a gold digger because she loves him with all of her heart.

She is submissive to her fiancé though she does find that to be hard sometimes. Mary Agnes is rather sentimental.

Background: Mary Agnes was born to poor parents in Central London, who were a baker and a seamstress respectively. She has two older sisters, an older brother, and a younger sister and brother.

She grew up with a gift for acting and quit school in the eighth grade to work so she could take acting courses. She held various jobs as a shop girl and waitressing positions to work her way through and was still waiting tables when she met Jordan.

The pair met back stage at one of her plays; he had passes that allowed him to meet the cast and the pair hit it off and dated for two years, the first year was long distance and he had moved to London for the second year.  She has every one of the letters he wrote to her and plans to keep them forever.

Name: Clyde Bishop, Bishop as a nickname

Age: 22

Position: Crew Member (loading and unloading of supplies / Ship hand)

Sexual Preferences: Bi-curious, Leans towards females but has had thoughts

Personality: He is very shift of authority figures but otherwise he is easy going and self sustaining.  Has a slight interest in the unknown and wears a golden cross around his neck as a protection to the evils of the world.

Background: His birth is unknown as he was an orphan boy.  He grew up in the streets doing what he could to survive and make his life better.   He was a trouble maker at a young age starting fights, stealing things, always running into the law in bad ways.  Yet he was lucky in the aspect that he always had the church ran orphanage to run back to.  (The church would explain his beliefs and fears in supernatural things) The sisters of the orphanage taught him subtle life lessons making him a deeper more spiritual person, which would later, as he grew up, make him a more rounded citizen and human being.

All was OK until the orphanage fire.

When people died the police needed a cause, a scapegoat,  and he was it.  Since his troubled past as a youngster it would be easy to pin the fire on him as a accidental murder.  So to evade the police he ran and ran and ran,  2 months later he found himself working the shipyards loading supply at point a and unloading at point b and so forth.  (Reasoning for being on ship)

That does. and the image expands when clicked on. But it loads faster.

Huh, spoilers really don't help? Thats kinda odd but I have resized the images with that. Hope that helps.

Nope, because the spoilers only hide the stuff, it doesn't keep it from loading.

Thank you, IrishWolf. I greatly appreciate it! <3

Question Mark

They don't always have to be sexy.  I find it usually makes a bigger impact if your character has a more... normal/believable appearance.  Everyone and their mother on E uses perfect models, so a more, for lack of a better word, "mundane" character can leave an impression.

I use DeviantArt, Google Images, and 4chan's /tg/ board for most of my character concepts.

(snipped beginnings of a character summary chart)

It's completely up to Zillah, of course, but I know that I'd find such a summary to be very helpful indeed. Can't tell the players without a scorecard. It might also be helpful for those trying to slide in characters before the ship sails, just to see what kinds of roles are already present and accounted for.

Very much looking forward to playing the game with this group. There are a number of names here that have been on my 'want to write with' list for quite some time.

Sexy is in the eye of the beholder, but I think that for there to be sex and such and it be enjoyable, there has to be attraction. If your character thinks that the person touching them is disgusting, that's not a very fun role play.

It doesn't have to be normal to be believable, and the reason the majority of people use models is because the entire idea is a fantasy.  The roles in which we are playing are fantasy as well, so why not shape the fantasy into something you like.  Each person is different, so not everyone uses one medium for their character appearance, and not everyone will use the same preferences for their character.

I'm not saying make your character Wormtongue or something like that.  Just normal or, more likely, above normal.  The kind of person you'd look at for an extra second or two on the street.  I mean, there's attractive, and then there's glamor model attractive.

Good point.  Willing suspension of disbelief and all that.  I think this actually hits on an interesting topic: when you partake in this games, are you directly roleplaying, pretending to be your character?  Or are you taking a step back, and collaborating with other people to create an interesting story?  I see myself as the latter, but I know many people fall into both categories.

Ah, my INTP's acting up again, trying to understand and label everything :P

Name: Clyde Bishop, Bishop as a nickname

Age: 22

Position: Trimmer (loads and unloads coal / transports coal to stoker)

So to evade the police he ran and ran and ran,  2 months later he found himself working as a trimmer in the shipyards.  Loading coal onto his assigned ship in port and then carting it to the stokers for usage.  It was an laborious job but an honest one.  A job that would keep him out of the eyes of the law.  His plan was simple get paid, save up, cross the ocean to a new home and a new start.  This majestic ship would hopefully be his last job before he could start his new life.

So what keywords should I use to find a good photo?
You should definitely use "1920s" as one of the words. What was regarded as handsome and dashing (or scummy) looked a lot different in the 20s to what is thought "good looking" today. A cigarette held casually in the fingers or lips was guaranteed to help a sexy or worldly image, as did slicked back hair and often a small moustache for men. Outside of the navy or merchant marine, beards were out of fashion in the 20s as was the unshaven look popular today. Moustaches were in. Also try searching for "1920s movie stars" or "1920s actors/actresses" or "silent movie star". Once you find one you think has potential, narrow it down to searching for them by name.

While we have some awesome characters lining up for this game, many would be even better if they used period faces and photos rather than modern ones.

Think Johnny Weismuller, Humphrey Bogart, Al Capone, Rudolf Valentino, Boris Karloff, the young Howard Hughes and such faces.

I use Google images for all my searches.

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=1920s+movie+stars&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=Orq&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=fQQ3UYuXL8asPO-zgagO&ved=0CDsQsAQ&biw=1224&bih=859

and

http://www.listal.com/actors/1920s

If you'd rather use a colour image, try searching for "1920s period costume drama" or "interwar period costume drama" under Google images. The BBC churns these out with regularity and they are chock full of great faces.

You can quickly make it smaller by adding the "height" tag around it:

This effectively turns it into a clickable thumbnail of whatever size you need.

Hope this is of help!

VonDoom

I'm fairly comfortable with my choice of picture, though I suppose I could supply some alternates. I thought it a bit too obvious to use pictures from the Arsène Lupin movie for the thief and conman. Whereas just using the same actor might qualify as clever. Maybe.

Hi Chreestafer,

This is a promising start. In addition to all the other excellent suggestions provided, I would try going to Wikipedia and searching for "silent film actors". This should give you a baseline for period-appropriate possibilities to use as a model for your character.

One suggestion for a change - in your character bio, you have him listed as a loader, which makes him sound more like a dock hand bringing stuff on board many ships, rather than a crew member of the Mystic. Ships wouldn't have dedicated cargo loaders ... they wouldn't have much to do while the ship was at sea! ::)

It might be better if he were a trimmer (responsible for engine coal), assistant pantry steward (responsible for food supplies), or steward (responsible for luggage), and assisting with the appropriate items being brought aboard depending on the role you select.

Name: The Hon. Artemis fforbes-Hamilton
Age: 19
Position: First Class Passenger (with nobs on)
Sexual Preferences: Submissive, straight
Appearance: A little taller than average for most women of her time and class, Artemis (Arty to her family) has fair hair, blue eyes and the porcelain skin that's characteristic of fforbes-Hamilton women. Her body is slight, but not entirely without shape - the family has survived countless generations thanks to suitably childbearing hips.
Personality: A quiet girl, unaware of her own beauty. She is more suited to the kinds of mindless activities that polite society foists upon a child raised in isolation... she can play patience and bridge, she can work needlepoint and recite obscure poems. She is aware of her social position and has been raised to believe she is somehow fundamentally different from people of the lower classes. Her new found freedom on board the ship reveals a reckless streak, a desire to live life to the full and attempt to shrug off her fearful nature.
Background: Has lived with her mother and grandmother at Grantleigh Manor in the English countryside all her life, every move monitored by a nanny or the tyrannical eye of her relatives. She's been very sheltered and protected, her only real access to the outside world has been newspapers (little more than propaganda) and servants' gossip. Her grandmother caught a severe chill days before their departure and it was decided, against her grandmother's wishes, that Artemis should make the trip alone. She is traveling to visit her father who lives in the States as a diplomat. With a new sense of freedom, she sets off on the open sea.

Yes! This would br extremely helpful, Branwen - thank you so much for putting this together!

I've been compiling a similar database for my own use offline (sans pictures), but as mentioned elsewhere, I think it'd be beneficial to have a quick "scorecard" of sorts available to everyone involved in this RP.

Zillah

Also, two quick notes on pictures/character models:

1. No one has to resize their pictures in this thread, though I would highly appreciate it if you did. However, when the RP goes live, I will be setting some guidelines for posting pictures in the game threads, and I will simply ask that all participants abide by those guidelines.

2. I never initially specified that period-specific images be used for characters, so they aren't mandatory. However, I do firmly believe that having characters "look" appropriate for the timeframe of the game does add something extra for the RP. No one has to change the images they've selected for their characters if they've already been approved, nor should they feel compelled to do so ... but if anyone should so desire to change their selected image to something specific to the 1920s, I wouldn't object. ::)

Hello Zillah,

So there may be more added to the Bio at some point. But I wanted to let you know about our interest before you closed the game to new applications.

Appreciate the edits and additions, Nim ... approved!

I'll believe she's submissive when I see it, Secret. ::) But definitely approved!

The great clown - Pagliacci - is in town. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. "But doctor..." he says "I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. And how am I mean? ;)

By creating a bi character who is sub and is taken by a jealous man!

Oh boy, this is a busy thread.

For women looking for suitable photos, the keyword "Flapper" is a good one. The fashion of the 1910 and 20s was the flapper - a bob-cut, tight short dress, lots of beads and a tight dome-shaped hat (not sure what the name is)

Zillah, may I suggest putting the re-size code in the character sheet?

Please check out my latest A/A post.
I would rather watch a movie then have dinner than have dinner then watch a movie!

Good thought, Chrystal - I've updated the template accordingly. The OOC Thread (which I'm currently writing) will also feature the updated template, and feature guidelines for how pictures should be formatted in all game posts.

And the dome-shaped "flapper hat" is a cloche hat. :)

I made her bisexual and unmarried for you and Zillah. And there might be a few people that I get to know better during the game. So I actually wasn't mean, I was being generous ;)  The possessive part will be fun between Nim and I xD

LOL I read that as 'douche' hat as the page loaded my reply. I sat here and thought 'and yet so many wear those invisibly these days!' lol. It just happened to catch my eye as the page flipped xD

I saw a picture of my grandmother from the 30's wearing the 20's styles, I can't remember if she had a hat on or not, I don't believe she did, but I remember thinking 'Damn. She looks like a drag queen with that strong jaw. Bad angle!'

Hi zenpal,

This, unfortunately, is going to need some significant revisions. A first officer would be expected to behave like perfect gentlemen while at sea and on duty - perhaps he could be a womanizer while in port, but not while aboard the Mystic. Considering how high profile the maiden voyage of the Mystic is as well, the crew selected would've been one expected to behave beyond reproach. You make him sound like he's planning on having sec with every woman in First Class - perhaps he could get away with seducing a naive, beautiful lady, but a First Officer trying to sleep with lots of women would get tossed in the brig by the Captain without a moment's hesitation.

Also, he's accepted the rather prestigious position of First Officer aboard what's to be the flagship of the White Star Line ... and he's going to retire after the first voyage?? That really doesn't make sense.

And I'm not understanding the part where he's spent his whole life at sea, but retired from the Royal Navy nearly 10 years ago. What's he been doing in that time? Has he been working aboard other ocean liners? Freight ships? Where?

I can't accept this character the way it is. He either needs significant personality and background changes  if he's to be an officer, or he most likely needs to be a passenger if you wish to retain parts of the basic concept. I'm very sorry, but the way the character is right now, I can't approve it.

Amazing work Branwen!

At the risk of seeming incredibly nitpicky... my character's surname is fforbes-Hamilton (two small case /f/s). It's one of those English eccentricities - anybody interested can learn more about them here.  ;D

Put simply, that's not going to happen, and is even less plausible than your initial concept.

As noted in the first post of this thread, the Mystic is owned by the White Star Line, which has a Board of Directors. This is the part of the RP that's based in historical fact. Having him be an "owner's son" is simply out of the question.

If you're serious about submitting a workable character concept for approval in this RP, please look over the feedback that's already been provided to you, as well as some of the characters that have already been approved. I'm trying to be somewhat flexible in allowing a variety of character concepts, but all concepts need to at least be plausible within the framework of the provided game guidelines. Unfortunately, the ideas you've provided so far don't meet that standard.

Name: Clyde Bishop, Bishop as a nickname

Age: 22

Position: Trimmer (loads and unloads coal / transports coal to stoker)

The sisters of the orphanage taught him subtle life lessons making him a deeper more spiritual person, which would later, as he grew up, make him a more rounded citizen and human being.  In the orphanage he gained many friends both male and female, and growing up he learned a lot of life lessons he couldn't have learned from the church sisters.  Here he experimented with some of the other orphan girls opening up his sexuality, he even at times would enjoy himself with some of the other boys as they watched the girls bathe.  Yet sometimes he wasn't looking at the girls.

All was OK until the orphanage fire.

When people died in the fire, the police needed a cause, a scapegoat, and he was it.  Since his troubled past as a youngster it would be easy to pin the fire on him as a accidental murder.  So to evade the police he ran and ran and ran,  2 months later he found himself working as a trimmer.

Fantastic work on that char list Branwen! I love it! Thanks a million.

I would also like to say that there would not be non-white officers on a prestigious passenger liner in the 1920s. Below decks in the engineering crew, yes, maybe even a steward, but an officer above decks among the passengers, never. This was definitely a racist era.

British nobility never have numbers after their names, only the Americans do that! :D

Modified it as asked hopefully all is ok :)

And @ Branwen im glad to be honored once more with your presence hopefully this rp goes well :)

Hi Chreestafer,

A trimmer doesn't actually "work in the shipyards" - he's assigned to a ship, such as the Mystic. Most of his time would be spent aboard ship - the only time he'd be working on the docks, to be honest, would be when more coal was being loaded on board. A lot of the job entails shifting around coal in the bins once it's on board to ensure the hull is properly balanced.

I'm also a little confused by what "very shift of authority figures" means - can you clarify this, please?

Finally, you have Bishop with a fairly religious background, but he's bi-curious ... that seems to mr something he'd be conflicted about. Can you expand on that a little? (Also, it's not necessary to give him a reason to belief in the supernatural for this RP - the supernatural is happening whether characters believe in it or not!)

If you can address these issues, we should be good to go for approval. Thanks!

Hi kajirakate,

If you can, please use the full character template provided on the first post in your thread for your character submission. A picture would be needed for your character, as well as considerably more background and personality detail. I'm afraid I can't consider the character as it is right now.

Also ... 5' 3" and 90 lbs? That's, um, extremely thin, to put it mildly. (I happen to be 5' 3" ...)

Chreestafer

:) ill gladly edit as needed

The shift part was a typo ment to be shifty around authorities since he's slightly wanted by the police.

His bi curiosity has only been thoughts he's never acted on, thoughts of what if

And when I wrote the shipyard part I was meaning he only got the coal onto the mystic from there, thats what I read on that wiki page.  :) but I can clarify better.
“The Doctor: This is bad, I don't like this. [kicks console and yells in pain] Never use force, you just embarrass yourself. Unless you're cross, in which case... always use force!
Amy: Shall I run and get the manual?
The Doctor: I threw it in a supernova.
Amy: You threw the manual in a supernova? Why?
The Doctor: Because I disagreed with it! Now stop talking to me when I'm cross!”

Sexual Preferences: bi inclined virgin, submissive nature

Appearance:  Winifred is 5' 3" tall, slim, weighting approx 100lbs, she has short brown hair with green eyes.  She is strong for her size due to years of hard work.  She is always immaculatly dressed in her uniform of black dress, white cap, white apron, white cuffs, black stockings and black lace-up ankle boots.

Personality: Winnie knows her place and is differential to the Ships Officers and Passengers, although she does her best to stay out way of both groups, she has a like for a glass of stout when she is off duty.  She is real quite shy, and seems unaware that some people consider her to be pretty.

Background:  Winnie's role on the RMS Mystic is looking after the cabins of some of the First Class passengers, having worked her way up in her three years with the Line.  She 'ran away to sea', when her parents tried marrying her to the local butcher in the suburb of Southampton that she was brought up in.  She did not want to be tied down, so early in her life, feeling a need to explore the world and what it has to offer.  She is not sure exactly what she is looking for, but she knows that it isn't a tribe of children and being chained to the kitchen of a two up two down in Southampton.  Her brother Ernest and three of his friends also work for White Star Line but are not aboard the Mystic.  Winifred knows of, but doesn't actually know Shannon as they work different cabins, she is also aware of Holly but again doesn't actually know her, having seen her in the female quarters.

How about a married couple from me ......smiles .

Name: Jack Alician Renaldi
Age: 39
Position: First Class Passenger
Sexual Preferences: Dominant with varying kinks leading to a darker persona

Appearance: Well put together is the man's normal look , not a hair out of place ...well dressed , refined and formally polite on all measures . How quickly that changes the politeness when behind closed doors .

Personality:  A bit  of a con man , making his way in the world from the loins of nothing . Self made man in his own right , swindling and taking care of his uncle's family business . The muscle for awhile went in silent and deadly taking out the opposition to his uncle moving onto the throne . Rather corruption runs through his blood and fuels his mind . His play toys are just that nothing to him in the long run and only around for amusement . Women are conquests and he seems to go through them quickly ...finding one as decadent as himself with a fiery passion and naughtiness to match his own is a struggle it seems . Still he holds out for that one to spark that wick . His new wife sometimes offered up that interesting challenge , maybe he didn't need to look much farther .

Background:

Jack born to a whore in midtown ...the only benefit she gave him was the man she had bed down with for some time was well placed in the crime syndicate . A big time wheeler and dealer with an ambitious Uncle that was cleaning up the streets . His father had managed to put them up in a little chateau but his mother couldn't keep her legs closed . Everytime she strayed the woman was caught ...and then the punishment would begin. Being forced to watch had turned the boys heart cold at an early age . Removed from the home and sent to boarding school in his late teens to be molded into a gentleman .  Which had seemed absurd at the time .

It worked to a degree and he excelled in many other outside activities ...the small group of colleagues he hung around managed to get themselves expelled before it was all over . Starting at the bottom , collections they called it . Bringing in the loan money the more collected the bigger the cut . Jack never had a customer refuse to pay twice as his tactics were a bit more ruthless . Even sometimes finishing the job anyways after payment had been given. Though as his Uncle's ambitions grew Jack seemed to be a way to seal a few loose ends up .  Bringing the two family heads to an agreement over a territorial dispute .

His job now ...keep an eye on Bella as she had managed to land herself in a heap of trouble and her Daddy was not impressed with her wicked little ways. A loose end needed tied up and to seal the deal Jack got a lovely wedding band on his finger for his trouble . A nice estate and a permanent whore to call his own.  It was their anniversary and this Voyage of the RMS Mystic was also the girls reward for completing her training . Bella was much better now ...so the social experiment would determine exactly how long she would bear the title of his last name. The more excited she seem to become as the days moved closer to the voyage the more the man wondered what the woman was planning . That mischievous glean had returned into her eyes and for once in a long time he felt alive again .

Name: Isabella "Bella" Marie Giovanni Renaldi
Age: 20
Position: First Class Passenger
Sexual Preferences: Submissive, Bi-sexual ...

Appearance: Exceptional beauty ...refined , pampered ...having a grace and poise about her though that wild streak has been tamed down now since marriage to Jack. Pleasing him the center of her world which while still allowing fine clothes and jewels to adorn her body other of his gifts seem a bit more embarrassing if ever found out by the outside world . Her eyes usually always down cast and her posture no longer that of her brazen youth . The spirit seems a little broken .

Personality:  Deep inside she seems to have a wickedness that bubbles to the surface at unexpected times ...drawn to the beauty of a woman. The desires of that softer touch pulse through her thoughts and even if it is sinful the woman seeks out that attention as often as timing permits . She has learned to be the good little whore her demanding husband wants ...playing his games , perfecting them and his perverted ways . Not that they don't excite her but she longs for the freedom to do just as she pleases . So the outer side shows a content woman sitting beside her man as it has been programed into her mind all these years. The inner self though seeks out a female companion as delicate and deceivingly naughty as she is . It is as if her inner happiness depends on such things .

Background:

Isabella grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth ...as her own mother seemed more into clothes , jewels and the finer things in life . Tea parties ...extravagant vacations , oh she had seen the world through her childhood . Having a nanny and various teachers ...finally a finishing boarding school . That was where the trouble started being caught by the head mistress in the arms of passion with her room mate . Then the embarrassment of the rage her father seemed to express . She became a prisoner in her own home ...with her mother gone now , no protection was forthcoming .

She rebelled yet again ...slipping out to an underground drinking hole . Having a bit too much to drink , she took the stage and showed off her body doing a strip dance for all to see. Unfortunately ...it seemed her own father had a front row seat in the balcony area . Though he had come in late ...not late enough to not realize just who the tart was . His rage fumed through the roof that night and the beating had been immense having taken several weeks for the bruises to leave her flesh .

Then she was forced into marriage ...to one of her father's partners not even that though just a younger right hand man type thing. Jack had been charming , getting down on one knee and the ring magnificent . Though she had no choice in the matter , marry or be taken out of the will completely. The courtship was quick ...the wedding over before one could blink an eye . It was on the honeymoon that little island paradise where she found out that clothing would be earned and she was degraded to being just a mere pet . Oh she wore the collar , fought him several times over ...enduring punishment after punishment . Some of which gave her more enjoyment that the woman wished to admit to . It had been two years now ....and this voyage the first time she was granted a taste of freedom.

Getting on the ship the woman had a secret desire and prayed she might find another woman to share herself with again . The last maid that had been so willing had been found out by Jack . It had been exploited for some time and then the maid had been let go . Part of her still hated him for it . She had seen that look in his eye though , he had enjoyed the threesome and he would again . That was the key feeding his little hidden kinks ..Bella was sure of it . A proper woman though not some dark skinned maid was what he wanted maybe .

@ Branwen. That is good work. I know everyone else has said it, but it is. Z, you need to copy the code into the first post on the character thread! Obviously it will need updating, but that's what being a GM is all about! lol!

Wow, Walter's the only steerage passenger?

I FEEL SPEHZUL!

I might just make a steerage class passenger myself actually....

Interesting random fact. The term steerage comes from the fact that on smaller ocean going ships, the control cables for the rudder ran on the same level of the ship. In later vessels, with no cables but with electric steering gear, the steerage cabins again would be on the same level, and the steering gear is noisy, whether mechanical, electrical, or steam powered.

That totally does rock, Branwen.

I just noticed a Shannon Elizabeth McPhee. I'm having nerdgasms due to movie references and actress names. For some reason, I now picture Nanny McPhee holding a warm apple pie...

I can see that particular maid staggering from cabin to cabin desperately wiping her face on her apron, and trying not to bend over!

Looks good, Sasha! Just one quick question, though - it's not stated anywhere in your character sheets (though it's certainly implied) - but are your characters from New York City? They appear to be part of organized crime in the olive oil importing business ... or, put another way, part of my family tree. ::)

No problem if that's the case - the voyage of the Mystic is starting in Southampton, though, which is in the United Kingdom. If your characters are indeed from New York (or American) could you just provide a quick reason why they're there? The voyage on the Mystic would just be a return home for them.

Otherwise ... approved and approved. Very glad that you're a part of this!

Hi kajirakate,

If you're making edits to an existing post, please note that either on these boards or PM me directly to tell me that, please - I'm usually not reading back through old posts scanning for changes!

If you still need assistance with coding (your post is all in bold, which made it difficult to read), Branwen and Chrystal have offered their assistance, and I'm offering mine as well. :) All of us are glad to help.

As for your character, it's approved. One minor tweak (which applies as well to Branwen's character Shannon) - they're technically stewards, not maids. First class passengers often brought their own maids. Steward characters would be less about cleaning individual cabins or suites (though they would do that) and more about keeping general public areas clean.

I also wouldn't mind if you made your character a little bit older, kajirakate - White Star employed very few female stewards, and those they did employ tended to be what could charitably be called "matronly". Assaults from male crew members on younger female stewards unfortunately was commonplace, and the charming solution utilized by White Star was to get less attractive females. :P Neither you nor Branwen need to change your character images or concepts; I would personally prefer, though, that Winifred not have started as a steward at the age of fourteen.

Age: 20
Position: Steerage Passenger
Sexual Preferences: submissive lesbian virgin.
Appearance: Patty, or Pat as she prefers to be called, is 5'4", skinny, with curly ginger hair, green eyes and freckles that extend most of the way down her chest. She is flat chested and has no difficulty whatever passing herself off as a boy.
Personality: Pat is a little bit shy around strangers, but once you get to know her she has the Irish gift of the blarney. She can talk herself out of trouble as fast as she can talk herself into it. She is disguised as a young man because she feels she will be safer that way. However she takes no truck from anyone and carries a pocket knife to protect herself.
Background: Pat was born in Belfast to Molly and Donovan O'Roarke. Donovan went to France in 1914 and was never seen again. Molly died in the great flu epidemic of 1918-20, leaving Pat to fend for herself. She did so by stealing. Picking pockets, filching from market stalls and the like. In 1924 she came to the attention of the IRA, who wanted to recruit her, but being a good protestant, she refused and fled to Liverpool. Over the next four years she slowly worked her way south, still pursuing a life of petty crime, always disguised as a boy.

On reaching Southampton, she blagged her way aboard the RMS Mystic and settled into a corner of one of the larger steerage cabins. Her greatest fear is being discovered to be a girl. She would kill any man who found out her secret, and has, in fact, done so in the past.

I know she's not :p  But at least my character has someone to interact with now!  The fact that she's a thief and he's an ex-Inspector makes it ripe for interesting plot developments as well.

Name: Patty O'Roarke

How's that, Zillah? Anything you want me to change?

Personally, I was just wondering when someone was going to make a character like this ... !

(That, and I had to look up "blagged", since I didn't have the vaguest idea what that meant. ::) )

Approved, Chrystal. :)

*grins* Thanks Z...

Oh, for everyone else on the "wrong" side of the pond:

blag [blæg] Slang
n
a robbery, esp with violence
vb blags, blagging, blagged (tr)
1. to obtain by wheedling or cadging she blagged free tickets from her mate
2. to snatch (wages, someone's handbag, etc.); steal
3. to rob (esp a bank or post office)

In other words, she's a stow-away! She talked her way onto the ship, possibly with some story about her parents already being on board, or maybe she just joined a large group heading up the gangplank into Steerage... Something like that anyway.

It's weird, though. When I was setting up Mars Colony, I had to turn down loads of players who wanted to create stow-away characters, because it simply was not possible given the scenario for someone to stow away on the space ship! Here, it's totally possible to have stow-aways, but no-one except me had created one!

Very true... Hadn't thought of that.

Um yeah, to all the rich women on the ship... I can tell you for a fact that little Patty isn't going to stay down in steerage. She is quite adept at locks and is likely to be solely responsible for any valuables that go missing!

Now if one of you ladies would agree to treat the poor urchin very brutally and not hand her over to the authorities, she might be willing to be caught red-handed...

Please check out my latest A/A post.

Interesting. A gentleman thief might find it in him to give a young pickpocket a few pointers, along the way.  >:)

That said, it looks like we have quite a few criminals around on board now. Our former policeman will be quite busy.

Housekeeping notes!

As of right now, this RP is closed for new characters.

Branwen's new character:

Name: Shannon Elaine Bunbury
Age: 21
Position: First Class Passenger, Fiancée of Lieutenant Colonel Edward Kline
Sexual Preferences: Heterosexual
Appearance: Shannon is of average height for a woman of the time, has dark brunette hair and blue eyes and a generous, typically disapproving mouth.  She carries herself with excellent carriage at all times whether standing, sitting or otherwise.
Personality: Shannon speaks slowly, clearly and with obvious elocution.  Her manners are utterly unaffected, given to her neither by schooling nor lessons but by birthright.  She is cordially polite but reserved with the lower classes, familiar when appropriately en famille, and formally proper in social settings of her own class without being conscious of it.  Privately Shannon tends towards melancholy but maintains the renowned stoicism of her family's heritage and homeland.
Background: Shannon is the third daughter of Thomas McClintock-Bunbury, 2nd Baron Rathdonnell.  Rathdonnell is a peerage set in the County of Donegal, Ireland.  The 1st Baron Rathdonnell, John McClintock, served as High Sheriff of Louth, Lord Lieutenant of County Louth and was raised to the peerage in 1868.  He was succeeded by his nephew, Shannon's father.  The family estate, Lisvanagh House, is outside Rathvilly in County Carlow.

Raised entirely at home by the governess and tutors, Shannon has the expected upbringing, education and manners appropriate to a young woman of the Georgian and Edwardian eras, and less of the post-Great War one.  She knows horses, sheep and the woman's part of running a household and planning the great overgrown gardens.  She is largely ignorant of modern culture and trends and fashions and a little uncomfortable around them and the outspoken, daring, smoking and drinking women who occupy it.  She has been abroad, both to India and the Americas and spent a bewildering and fascinating six months in Southern Africa whilst her father traipsed about on safari.

She is affianced to Edward Kline and harbors some trepidation about the wedding, her husband to be and of course her marriage bed.

Cycle's Character

Name:  Lieutenant Colonel Edward Kline
Age:  47
Position:  First Class Passenger, Fiancée of Shannon Elaine Bunbury
Sexual Preferences:  Heterosexual
Appearance:  5' 9",  162 lbs, grey hair (once dark brown) and brown eyes
Personality:  Grim, dour, precise and intelligent.  Kline is a man of few words.  Slow to take action, he always assesses the situation first before deciding how to proceed.  The war taught him patience.  And pain.  He will respond civilly to everyone around him, but will be slow to trust anyone.  He respects the chain of command and expects others to abide by it too.  Though often surrounded by others, Kline has few real friends in life.  Inside, he is lonely, even though outside, he will never admit it.
Background:  Kline was a member of the  American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in the Great War.  He has seen death.  Up close and personal.  Too often.  He lost many good men to the carnage of the trenches.  Worse, he lost wife--his beloved Monica--six months after returning home.  He raised his then nine year old daughter by himself, as best as he was able.  Somehow, something happened and Denise blamed the death of her mother on Kline.  Today, Denise is married to a rich young man somewhere in New York.  Kline hasn't heard from her in five years.

Kline was able to leverage his influence and connections to build and maintain a fairly successful copper manufacturing business, focusing mostly on higher grade wires and cables.  The popularity of electricity led to an unexpected boon to his company and today, he is very well off.  A man of humble beginnings (his parents, both deceased, were farmers from Iowa), Kline does not display his wealth openly.

Kline is on the Mystic, returning to the States with his new fiancée, the beautiful and elegant Shannon Bunbury.  With the consent, albeit not the outright blessing, of Thomas McClintock-Bunbury.

They are due to be married by the Captain while underway and will consumate their vows before arriving on the shores of America.

At least for now, I'm only allowing a maximum of 2 characters per player ... I want to see how things shake out before allowing more. A piano player later would be fine, though. :)

You're not the only one!

Zillah

The White Star Line (and other ocean liner companies of the time) had most areas of their ships segregated into First Class areas, then Second Class and Third Class areas. (For purposes of this RP, I lumped Second & Third Class together into "Steerage", as adding that extra layer of character type seemed unnecessary to me.) First Class passengers could move down to whatever areas they wanted, but Second and Third Class could not move into First Class areas without special permission. There were a few "common areas" (such as some of the dining rooms) that were open to all.

For this RP, I'll be bending realism a bit - there will be more common areas than there would be on a real ship from that period. Also, I'll probably be a bit lenient about Steerage and Crew Members sneaking into places that they perhaps shouldn't be ... but if they do anything to attract attention to themselves in those restricted First Class areas, the crew will notice, and appropriate action will be taken. However, I think it's more important that all players in the RP get an opportunity to interact than to try and model a more realistic scenario.

To know if a thread is "Restricted" to First Class or not, I'll be putting one of the following headers as part of the first post for any given area:

FIRST CLASS ONLY
STEERAGE ONLY
CREW ONLY
ALL PASSENGERS AND CREW

This should let you know what characters are *supposed* to be in a given area, and which aren't supposed to be there. Something to keep in mind. :)

Chrystal

Zillah,

Point for when we start: OOC rules are there to make the game work, but IC rules are there to be broken, provided the character is the sort that would break such rules.

What I'm saying is that little Patty is going to be sneaking around in places where she shouldn't be and if she gets caught she will blarney her way out of trouble... Otherwise there's not a lot of point to the character!

Please check out my latest A/A post.
I would rather watch a movie then have dinner than have dinner then watch a movie!

Zillah

No argument.

The header is to indicate what sorts of characters are *supposed* to be in a given area. That's all. It doesn't mean a Steerage passenger character isn't physically allowed in other areas, just that they aren't supposed to be in those areas.

IC, Steerage passenger characters can certainly go into areas reserved only for first-class passengers. And, IC ... there shouldn't be any surprises if there's consequences for such behavior. ::)

Also, Chrystal ... can you repost this comment in the OOC thread? I'd rather have comments like this go there instead now. I'll repost my response once that's done, so more people can see it. Thanks!

Final edit :)

Sorry it took so long busy friday :)

Name: Clyde Bishop, Bishop as a nickname

Age: 22

Position: Trimmer (loads and unloads coal / transports coal to stoker)

Sexual Preferences: Bi-curious, Leans towards females but has had thoughts

Personality: He is very shy around authority figures but otherwise he is easy going and self sustaining.
