Openness v. security v. openness v. security...  It's one thing to demand greater openness of a putatively democratic regime that often functions rather more as a corporate entity with a mix of public and private armies and spies all around the world.  It's another to demand openness of an organization that claims to have limited staff, is already suffering financial attacks from major players, and is somehow arrayed against that same much larger entity.

What kind of information could be requested of Wikileaks that obviously would not give the US government and other powerful detractors leverage to further threaten, logistically embargo, or isolate them -- whether as individuals or as a corporate entity?  Would we necessarily know the difference, given how happy some members of the US establishment have appeared to be at any "coincidental" issue Assange seems to encounter (whether the government is actually involved or not) ?

Part of it seems to be hypocrisy. He's perfectly willing to splash other companies inner workings all over the net, but damned if he'll let others do that to him.

Kylie,

Every organization has to have a table of organization and rules of conduct. Wikileaks has done some good in the past, and some of the actions that Assange has done in the past reflects an anti-American (and to lesser extent anti-government) bias. Without some idea of what the overall structure of the organization is like, how can we assume where his actions begin and the organizations begins.

And I can point to actions like his 'edited' version of the combat footage where the Reuters crew was killed. The release of the 'Collateral Murder' video was played up, whereas the unedited full 44 minute version was downplayed. Of note on that 18 minute version was the LACK of the insurgent with the RPG.

With no ladder of organization or idea of how oversight is performed, it actually HURTS the credibility of Wikileaks as a journalistic organization. To claim the role of a journalistic organization you have to have a structure in place to allow for the placement of responsibility. Bloggers (well the ones who wish to be regarded as professionals) are responsible for their posts because they post their names. Journalists (and their organizations) are responsible and accountable for actions they take.

Supposedly, Assange has folks campaigning for him to get the Peace Prize. Not sure what to think on this. His stated intents are a bit in line with what I expect of a nominee.
