Not to complain....

I don't mean to complain, I'm really sorry if it comes off as such.... but could we get some rules about the header bars?   Specifically the contest / auction winner about the 'dead state' has a picture of a decaying zombie.  It really kind of kills my vibe to see that right on the top of the page when I'm trying to write erotic role plays.   I'm not making judgements on other people's tastes here.... but I do know that for myself decaying flesh does not make me want to write ERPs.

Especially odd is the fact that the tag line for the story even says "It's about the survivors, not the zombies"   Couldn't we get a less grotesque picture?  Like... one of the survivors?

Sorry to be a nudge.  But... yuck.

To be honest, if you scroll down, just a bit, you can't see it while you're posting. :) Also, if you refresh your page a different banner will come up. OR if you write in a doc on your cpu and then copy paste the words into the reply bar you won't even be looking at it long enough to where it should matter.

The rules are simple for the bar. You can post anything without Pornographic content. :) The zombie will actually draw people in so it's a good marketing strategy and makes more sense. I actually clicked up there because of  the zombie... >.>

Edit: Thanks Oni. I'm still not awake.... >.>

Oniya

That should be 'without' pornographic content.  Banner pictures and language must be work-safe.

I wouldn't say that the picture is NSFW by any means nor is it pornographic.

It's just yuck.

Lets say there was a picture of something that really grossed you out or squicked you out.   If it was a picture of a kid with a runny nose, or dogs fighting in a ring, or a creepy clown.... whatever.   Is saying  "Just scroll past it" really a sensitive response?    Again, I know I'm being a nudge here and I feel terrible about it.... but I can't be the only one that feels that way.... can I?

I suppose you're right though... it doesn't violate the rules.  I'll learn to cope.

Nevermind, problem solved..... Adblock to the rescue!

I use that for a lot of pictures that I don't like, but that don't violate the rules of the site.  :-)

*blushes* that's exactly what I do actually. That's why I had no issues giving that advice.

Yeah.

For people who don't know how to do it:

Install Adblock plus.
Right-click image. Select "Adblock Plus: Block Image".
It will bring up a menu with four radial buttons under the "Look for Pattern" heading.
-- First radial button blocks that specific image (this is the one I most commonly use).
-- Second radial button usually blocks all the images from that folder (e.g. will block all/most avatars but is unlikely to block theme images).
-- The third radial button blocks all images from the site you're on.
-- And the fourth is a custom option.
Once you've selected the radial button you want, click "Add filter". Boom, squicky image of zombie goes away.

Just as a note, though, that the bar up there is a revenue source for Elliquiy and if you block all the images in there ever, people will more than likely stop paying for the bar. So there is that to keep in mind.

... but zombies squick me a little, so I had to ABP that one.

Oniya

Firefox comes with ABP already installed.  Right-clicking any image should confirm that you have it on your browser, though.  It's the bottom item.

Oh - one thing that is affecting ABP at the moment:  If the page you are on is an https: page and you block an image, the block does not carry over to the http: pages and vice versa.  Until Elliquiy goes to the forced https:, be aware that you may have to block an image a second time under the other protocol in order for it to 'take'.

Well, blocking the folder will block all wiki images. Have had a few people complain that they can't see anything on the wiki after doing that...

That said, I should probably poke Mayo to make a more site-sensitive picture for it. I didn't think anything of it until actually seeing it live on the forum itself. Previous thoughts mostly revolved around wanting things safe for work.

Aadreal

The problem with trying to limit any images beyond safe for work is there will always be someone who is turned off by it.   The banner ad for Vek's Minecraft server kills my mood, for instance. (Thanks to dealing with far too many people that lose themselves in video games.)  While E is a ERP site, not all RP's revolve around the E aspect.  Should someone find anime or catgirls or what have you as a turn off, do those get limited as well?  I will admit, I am in Dead State but honestly even of I wasn't the thought of trying to limit images to won't turn people off seems impossible.

mayovagn

I have agreed with Veks to pull the image and I will look at alternatives.

I am with Aadie on this, yet, this isn't my sandbox, its Veks and the Gods.

Suggestions for un-squiky zombie images gratefully accepted. *Big evil teasing grin*

Personally, I only blocked one specific image.... I forget the name now but it was like   JS.jpg or something like that.   So unless you reuse filenames for the header bar, I don't think I'll have anything else blocked.  I still see images up there, like the minecraft green thingie.

I also fully admit this is probably 99% a "me" problem.  I'm a grown ass man in his mid thirties with a family, yet zombies freak me the hell out.  If I deal with zombie stuff too much, like watch a zombie movie, I have nightmares.  I don't know why, there's no logic to it, it's just my brain.

Honestly, I almost wish I hadn't said anything.  Because once I figured out to adblock that single image.... problem solved.   Plus everyone aadreal makes a great point; there's bound to be someone who doesn't like anything posted up there.   But I do see the wisdom in having those images up there.  I sort of which I hadn't brought it up, because now i feel bad, like I've somehow inconvenienced someone else who helps to contribute and donate to keep this place up and running.... which is the last thing I want to do.

Seconded.

I'm in the same boat as rhev in regard to the zombie-thing, and I pretty much have learned to deal with it. I might grumble about "the fuck is so fucking popular about zombies, anyway?" from time to time, but I realize it's my hangup and I cope with it accordingly.

I would honestly expect others to do the same, especially when it's not hard to control your brower content at least marginally.

Nadir

I was planning of bidding for a banner ad after I come back from holiday, but my idea was for an arachnid-demon. Which is going to squick people with arachnophobia >_>

So yeah, I duplicate Aadreal's words. May bought the space, and it's only for a week. Maybe for the future have some stock images of inoffensive flower arrangements the winner has to choose from - oh wait. Someone might be anthophobic. Naw, better not.

Ember Star

I'm no fan of zombies, far from it. But to be honest, I don't even notice the images up there passes the first time.or two I see 'em.

Also, Aadie's point of "every image is gonna have something somebody doesn't like"

That being said, a tip to Mayo and anybody else looking to put things up. When in doubt avoid things with living (or un-living) people/creatures in it and that'll take care of a lot of "turn offs"

I use art/pictures for my stuff that I add words into via a photo editor (see signature for a few examples)

For the zombie thing, some kind of symbol that the Survivors use might work, even without words.

As somebody who is quite found of making sig-images, I know some things just might not work.

Agreed. I just ignore it. It doesn't bug me being up there. Besides, it is a zombie group.

I'm good so long as no one puts a black widow up there. I'd get the creepy crawlies for sure.

Camel spiders are much more creepy in my opinion.
What if someone has a zombie as their avatar and you accidentally scroll down past it when reading a forum, would it not be similar?
We use maths at almost every point of the day, whether we're working out how to thread our shoelaces,
calculating the optimal moment on which to embark upon a conversation, or, if you can fly, planning your trajectory for the journey to work.

Jumping spiders are fine, cutsie even. It is black widows in particular that creep me out. Probably because they are so prevalent in my area, and I have been bitten.

I came back from a trip out earlier to a really lovely message from Oreo about a new image she had concocted for me. Which I replaced the other one with. The banner looks a little wonky now, but I have PM'ed the nice Sir Vek's to kindly and respectfully ask if he would sort that for me. *Smiles*

So yeah, should be sorted.

And yeah, I have several horror movie avatars, I have a specific directory on my desktop for avatars and one of the sub directories off of that is titled 'The Sinister Sisterhood' so I am very much guilty of strange images on the E.
