Yep, but apparently all but three of the passengers have been allowed off the plane once it landed in Cyprus.  Sounds like a very unusual hijacker, too: he's a professor of veterinary medicine and hijacked the aircraft to get to his estranged ex-wife.  ::)

Meanwhile, back here, the Catholic Church bishops make a public appeal for the full ban on abortion.

To provide the context: in Poland, abortion is already mostly illegal. There are three legal causes for an abortion: the severe defect of the child, the pregnancy being a health risk for the mother and the pregnancy having been caused by rape. Apparently, the bishops want to make the abortion illegal even in these cases :(

Yep, you've got a point for sure. Not only seeing movements like ISIS that are openly selling women into slavery, burning books and doing all kinds of barbarian stuff, but the political scene in the west has more extreme responses and memes popping up by the month.

Me thinks the two are hand in hand, rather than exclusive. Extremists are always going to be more noticeable than moderates, by their nature of being loud and attention-getting. The Information Age has not only allowed what would be otherwise isolated extremists to get in touch with each other, coordinating themselves and building numbers, but it's made it far easier for them to get the attention of everyone else. And finding people who agree with you politically is encouragement to double down on your beliefs and stay extremist, because you're not forced to interact with people who disagree.

Jarosław Kaczyński, the puppetmaster behind Szydło and all of PiS, also said that, being Catholic, he would support the Church's teachings.

This is scary. It's not a case of the bishops appealing for something that will not happen. With such a government in power, this ban might actually come to pass...  >:(

It's demoralizing. People have fought so hard to gain what rights and freedom they have, and all it takes to to lose it all is the wrong person at the wrong post in a governement.

Promising new evidence of a second Viking site in Newfoundland, on the south coast, about 600 km/370 miles down from the only certified Viking settlement in North America proper so far, L'Anse aux Meadows near the northern tip of the island (which was discovered by Helge Ingstad more than fifty years ago). The new site is said to have traces of Viking-like house walls and remains of iron artifacts and pieces of smelted bog iron (a typical Viking technology; the native Americans didn't use iron smelted tools).

This is very interesting. There are stories about the vikings making several forays into the Canadian Atlantic seaboard area, and with their expertise in shipbuilding it's always been an open question how far they actually got. Of course once they reached land they would have been likely to aim to sail further south, into more inviting regions. Historians have suggested for a long time that they could have visited Nova Scotia (which could have been Vinland) the St.Lawrence river area or even New England, but there's never been any solid archaeological finds to support this. If they did reach the area just opposite Nova Scotia it becomes more likely that they went on further south.

So apparently they are close to deciding who will be the new face of the $10 bill.

Personally I'm fine with either Susan B Anthony, Sacagawea, or Harriet Tubman.

I just hope the transition goes smoothly but...idk incompetent government so it will probably be one giant headache and lead to insanely long lines at the bank.

In Polish news: the possible abortion-related horror continues. Not only is the Church and important PiS politicians in favour of changing the law - there's actually a project of anti-abortion law ready to be proceeded by the parliament. According to the proposed bill, even a pregnant woman who *accidently* causes a miscarriage might be sentenced to three years in prison...  :o  :o  :o
