Between the Pipes
A Light Sandbox Game

Dunbarton High, located in Pickering, Ontario, isn't a large school by any means, but it does hold the record for having one of the best scoring hockey teams in the district.  And in a land where Hockey players are gods, and the sport is unequivocally the most popular in the country, it's only natural that the schools Senior and Jr. Varsity teams are the center of attention.  And like most small town high schools, this one is ran by cliques and a strict social order; the Hockey Jocks being on top, and the Academic nerds at the bottom.  So let me ask you one question.

Who wants to go back to high school?

All genders and sexual orientations wanted!

This will be a sandbox game, which basically means, it's a game where there's less focus on a linear plot, and more freedom for your characters to explore and progress with their own subplots at your own convenience.  I'll give you the background and the setting of course, but other than that, it'll basically be a fun for all for players to do what they want, when they want.  This doesn't meant that odd ball characters with super powers or aliens will be allowed.  But I am completely encouraging people to take up stereotypical roles, like a cheerleader, jock, nerd, goth etc.

Now I usually don't create game's that will center around sex, but I do want this one to center on the students sexual identities, and how they deal and progress with them.  Which brings with it sexual encounters, I know.  So I really want a wide diversity of sexual orientations in this game.  Although I do want people to understand that this isn't going to be some huge porn production, yes they're teenagers, yes they have sex, but realistically it wont be going on all the time, because that get's old really fast.

The Setting

The setting will, of course be Dunbarton High school, in Ontario, Canada. And the beginning of the Hockey season has just begun, so it's early November.  It hasn't snowed yet, but the temperature is fairly chilly, and people are just getting into the holiday season.  The school is small, with around 250-300 students per grade, ranging from 9-12th.  When it comes to actually creating characters, we'll only be accepting 11/12th graders, so the age will range from 16/17 bordering on 18.  Or if you choose to create a teacher/coach, than the age range can obviously be older.

The Possible Characters

So I guess all that's left is what sort of characters am I looking for.  Well I'm looking for upwards of six characters, maybe more if we get enough interest.  It's up to you what kind of character you want to play, but I am looking predominately for hockey players of course.  Other characters, like cheerleaders, nerds, stoners, and even teachers are welcome also.  Below are list's of possible ideas for your character positions, but other than the Hockey positions, the others aren't mandatory.

D-H-S Senior or Jr. Boys Hockey Positions

  • Goalie:(Reserved) Perhaps the toughest position in all of sports, the goalie is the one player who can control a team’s confidence. His job is to keep the puck out of the net, and if he’s good, he can take his team a long way. Good goalies win championships.

  • Defensemen:(1 more needed) A team at full strength has two — one on the left side and another on the right. Nowadays, there are three primary kinds of defensemen. One is creative and offensive-minded; he likes to handle the puck and lead the team up ice, but is not too physical. Another is defensive-minded, a stay-at-home bruiser who plays a physical game and doesn’t often venture out of his zone with the puck. And there are those rare athletes who are a combination of the two.

  • Right wing:(Taken) He works the right side of the ice for the most part. He needs to be a physical player who is good along the boards and in the corner. He is responsible for the opposition’s left defenseman in the defensive zone.

  • Left wing: Traditionally a left-handed shot, but the NHL is seeing more right-handers playing this position now, a practice picked up from the Europeans. A right-hander has a better angle to shoot from when he’s coming in on his wing. Like the right wing, he needs to be able to dig out the puck from the corners and battle in front of the net.

  • Center:(Taken) He quarterbacks his club at both ends of the ice. Must be good at face-offs and passing, and it doesn’t hurt if he's a good shot as well. Coaches want a lot of creativity in this position — and a lot of hockey smarts.

D-H-S Senior or Jr. Varsity Cheerleaders

  • Captain: Leader of the Squad.
  • Co-Captain:(Taken) Co-leader of the Squad
  • Cheerleaders: Cheerleaders can be anything from Tumbers, Flyers, and/or bases on a squad.

D-H-S Radio

  • DJ:(Taken) Goes on-air to broadcast news and play music
  • Workers: Miscellaneous positions.

D-H-S Clubs

  • Dunbarton Athletic Association (DAA): Meets every Tuesday at lunch in room 304.  They do many different sport related events around the school.  For example, they run intramurals and host the Athletic Banquet in June to acknowledge athelete's accomplishments from the year.
  • Music Council: Meets every Thursday at Lunch at the Auditorium in South Campus.  This council supports the Music Department and other Dunbarton fundraising initiatives.
  • DHS Environmental Council:  Meets Wednesdays at lunch with executive meetings on Mondays in room 440.  Dunbarton is a gold level Ecoschool with a wide-ranging set of curriculum and club based environmental initiatives.
  • French Society (DFS):  Meets every Thursday at lunch in room 416.  DFS aspires to raise school awareness of national bilingualism, increase appreciation of French culture, strengthen French skills, and to enhance French through education as well as intellectual, social and creative activities.  It is a council founded on the principles that knowledge and pride for bilingual national heritage is key to understanding our identity and promoting national pride.
  • S.T.O.P:  The Students Together Opposing Prejudice Council, better known as S.T.O.P. is a dedicated group at DHS.  The council works together to promote multiculturalism and diversity, helping to eliminate problems concerning prejudice and discrimination around the school.  The S.T.O.P. council is also in charge of the cultural events that take place at DHS
  • M.S.A:  The Muslim Student Association meets every Tuesday at lunch in room 308.  The goal of this council is to spread awareness about Islam and eliminate prejudice in Dunbarton High School through their events.  They host the annual Eid Luncheon, organize an Islamic Awareness Month assembly, and run the Blood Donor Clinic.  these are just a few of the biggest events.  They also have samosa sales and little fundraisers througout the school year.
  • GSA:  GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) meets every Tuesday after school in room 704.  Dunbarton's Gay-Straight Alliance draws on the courage of LGBT youth and the commitment of straight allies working in partnership to change the school climate, promote acceptance, and reform school policies.  Strong, well-supported GSAs can have a major impact on the education enviroment and possess the power to transform individuals, school cultures, and educational institutions.
  • IMPACT:  IMPACT is a Christian council that runs at Dunbarton High School.  They meet every Wednesday, at lunch in room 307.  At the meetings they get to know one another better and become friends.  Throughout the year they plan various events.  The biggest event with the help of all councils at DHS is Santa Cause.  Santa Cause is a two week event that raises money for the Salvation Army.
  • Arts Council:  Arts Council's mission is to spread the arts throughout Dunbarton, whether it be visual, dramatic or musical.  Our biggest event is Coffee House, which is essentially an intimate showcase of student talent.  They also host Arts Week, Door Decorating, Buskering, Applefest, and more!  They meet every Wednesday at lunch in Room 821 of south campus.
  • Student Senate:  Student Senate is an elected group of students that meet three times per semester to discuss upcoming events.  Each homeroom has a Class Ambassador, or "CA" that is elected at the beginning of the semester.  Approximately 80 CA's receive information regarding Dunbarton's upcoming events, which they pass on to their homerooms.  This generates awareness for the events, which in turn gets more students involved in leadership activities.
  • President's Council:  Presidents' Council meets every other Monday in the leadership room.  This a meeting for every president of every council at DHS.  These meetings are for the councils to discuss what events are running throughout the school and to organize and plan major events.

The Character Profiles

D-H-S Senior or Jr. Boys Hockey Team

Theodor Sawyer

Nicknames: Theo, "DJ T-Wolf", "Timber"
Date of Birth: September 8th
Age: 17
Grade 12
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Extra-curricular Activity: Defender for DHS Boys Hockey Team, DJ for DHS Radio, Bassist for Mister Of The Affect
Job: Works part time at his father's gunstore/firing range

Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black, kept short
Build: Lith, yet well developed musculature hidden under his clothes. While he may not look it, his body holds great power and speed that translates into terrifying movements on the ice. His right arm is slightly longer than his left.
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 158 lbs
Markings: A small scar next to his left eye that has faded into near non-existence and a long scar on his right shoulder from surgery as a child. He has a tattoo of a stylized wolf head on his left shoulder that he got when he joined the hockey team.
Distinguishing Features: Wears a pair of black rimmed glasses off the ice and is rarely seen without his blue wristband on his left wrist and his Celtic cross around his neck.

Likes: Music, books, hockey, cool days, red heads, the Boston Bruins and Red Sox, going to his father's firing range, Soccer (in the spring)
Dislikes: Hunting, being called a nerd (he much prefers the term geek), being coerced into doing something against his will, being called a "punk rocker"
Fear(s): That he'll be stuck in Pickering permanently, fire
Personality: Theo is a gentle soul and very soft spoken off the ice, but on, he is a force to be reckoned with. Fierce as an uncaged beast on offence and like an animal backed into a corner on defense. When he has a chance to talk about something other than hockey, he usually discusses his particular tastes in music or his band, which can sometimes be to the annoyance of his teammates. Theo will often go out of his way to help others, even if it is at cost to himself. While he might be gentle most of the time, he does however know full well how to defend himself and can be quite opinionated should the need arise. He is very protective of his team and his school, which shows through in his role on the team and the fact that he plays every school dance for no charge.

Mother: Annabeth Sawyer
Father: Dean Sawyer
Sibling(s): Felicia Sawyer (Oldest), Chase Sawyer (Middle)
Residence: Sawyer Residence in Pickering
History:  Theo's life has been one of hard work and obligation. Early in his life, he had an obligation to his family to carry on the Sawyer name in the town's Youth Hockey league, where he earned a reputation as a highly skilled goalie like his father and brother before him. There was little time to care about anything else in his household besides hockey and the family business, and Theodore was taught to have great care for both. However, his mother always took the time to show the young boy new music and teach him various instruments, which developed into his absolute love of music. He eventually discovered his favoritism of the bass guitar, which garnered him a bit of jealousy amongst the boys at his school.

As he entered middle school, Theo realized that he wanted to do something different from his father and brother, and began stepping away from the shadow cast by his family name. Leaving the youth hockey league was quite the shock to his father, but Theo considered it to be the best decision of his young life. It gave him the chance to explore new options and eventually grow into his own man. Years later however, he was drawn back to the path his father laid out for him when his father grew sick and was diagnosed with cancer, causing Theo to take up a part time role in the family business to pick up the slack.

In Theo's junior year of high school, the school's hockey coach approached him about a position on the team, and while he did agree, it was under a condition that came as a shock to most people that knew his past. Theo joined the DHS Boys Hockey team as a defender, and played in the only way he knew how, with precision and speed rather than brute force. He earned a reputation as the "Timber Wolf" for being absolutely brutal to anyone who dared harm his teammates. Now in his senior year, he tends to offer his advice and assistance to the younger players that will be replacing him in the next year, as well as tries to keep up to date on his other activities outside of hockey and school.

Kevin Avery
Nicknames: "Kev" "Vin" and "Avery"
Date of Birth: January 13th
Age: 17
Grade 12th (senior)
Sexual Orientation: Gay
Extra-curricular Activity: Right Wing for the D-H-S Boys Hockey Team, Plays on the D-H-S Swim Team(From late Oct-mid-March), and he's a member of both the French Society (DFS), and S.T.O.P.
Job: None

Eyes: Dark Blue
Hair: Dirty Blond
Build: Slim, and surprisingly not stocky compared to his older brothers.  He has a swimmers body, with tight compact muscles, that you wouldn't notice unless he wore something tight, or nothing at all.  He's light skinned, with a subtle tan, and is prone to being hairy, but he shaves it off for swimming.  In the off season, he enjoys not shaving, but the hair that grows on his chest, legs, and under arms are generally a lot darker than the hair on the top of his head.
Height: 5 ft 9 in (1.74 meters)
Weight: 185 lb (84 kg)
Markings: None
Distinguishing Features: He has Dimples when he smiles.

Likes: Swimming, Hockey (the Detroit Red Wings), B&W movies, Not having homework to do, and sleeping in.
Dislikes: Having to wake up early in the morning, large amounts of homework, oral reports, and Raisins.
Fear(s): Spiders and heights
Personality: Although Kev is a jock by nature, he doesn't really stand for bullying of any kind.  He just never saw the value in trying to hurt those who are younger or weaker than himself.  But when it comes to a fair fight, he's more than willing to jump in and defend himself.  But his fights usually end quickly, and without getting caught, and when it's over, it's over in his mind.  He does honestly believe that a lot of problems between men can be solved with a little fight here and there, and when they're over, he generally let's it go, without holding a grudge.

He's the runt of his family, shorter and not as stocky as his other brothers, even Cal, who's much more muscular than he is himself.  But he's also the most disciplined when it comes to working out, and he actually likes running, and lifting weights in the morning, something that really contradicts his somewhat lazy attitude.  Most would probably call him stupid, but his mother has always said that he's just lazy, and in reality she's correct.  He could get better grades, but he doesn't study as much as he should, "forgets" to do homework, and can't even comprehend the idea of pulling all nighter's for a big test.  He skirts by, and he knows it, barely making the minimum GPA to stay on the teams he's on.

His friends would call him a nice guy, and that's probably because he's not the type to really get worked up, unless he has to, or something is really bugging him.  The guys he's gone out with in the past would probably describe him as a bad boyfriend, since his lazy behavior does extend to his social life.  He doesn't like to go out too much, and would rather stay at home most nights.  He's also deeply rooted in the closet, although his family does know about him.  It's not that he's necessarily afraid of letting people know about him, but he'd rather not go through the hassle that it would bring.

Mother: Marlene
Father: Al Avery
Sibling(s): Sean(Oldest), Scott(2nd oldest), and his twin brother Calvin(character is open for someone to take.)
Residence: His family lives in a good sized house that's not too close to other residences.  You have to drive down a small dirt road for a bit before reaching it.  There's a small lake next to the house, and it has a large porch that wraps around first the ground floor, and than the second floor, where outside stairs lead up to his room.
History:  Unlike his older brothers, Kev didn't have to move around a lot, and he was born and raised in Pickering, where he enjoyed the benefit of having friends who've known him from grade school.  Before he was born was a different matter altogether, and his family moved around a lot, before settling in his hometown.  His oldest brother had already made a name for himself as a "loose cannon," and a "nuclear power generator ready to explode like Chernobyl," when it came to Hockey, and Kev grew up with his brothers fame already a well established fact.  But to a young Kevin, that was the coolest thing in the world, even if his brothers exploits sometimes embarrassed him to death, and he threatened to not talk to him a million times before getting over it.

His second oldest brother Scott, was around much more than Sean was, and proved to be the sort of brother who would always be there to talk if he needed it.  But Scott was already much older than Kevin, so the age gap proved to be a tiny hindrance in any deep brother-to-brother talks that might have happened otherwise.  It was Calvin, Kevins twin brother that was his real confident, they did everything together, up until they hit middle school.  It was than that they sort of went their own ways, although they were still very much close, closer than regular siblings would have been in any case.  It was also Calvin, who Kevin first came out to.  Although Calvin didn't share his appreciation of the male form, he was still there to talk it over with him, and help him come to terms with that aspect of himself.

He did finally come out to the rest of his family, the year before he started high school, and they all took it much better than he thought they would.  It was a huge surprise when his oldest brother, Sean, proved to be his greatest supporter, but it was a welcome one.  He chose not to come out to anyone else, deciding that he'd do it when he was ready, but that day hasn't come just yet.  That being said, he has had his fair share of boyfriends, but most didn't last too long, the longest relationship, so far, lasting a little over a year.

But despite "staying in the closet," he wasn't a miserable kid, and got into sports to work off the energy that seemed to thrum in his veins.  And coming from a family that was very sports oriented, it wasn't a huge surprise when he joined hockey in middle school, and the swim team when he joined high school.  To be honest, he's a better swimmer, than he is a hockey player, and he isn't as talented as his older brothers on the ice, but he's not terrible, and he has fun, which is all that matters to him.  He wasn't the biggest academic growing up, and that never really changed in his teen years.  Some would call him slow, when compared to his twin and Scott, but he isn't stupid, and he tries his best, even if his best is a C average, with a few B's mixed in if he's lucky.

Cole Ringo-Ellington

Nicknames: 'Ringo' or 'C'
Date of Birth: December 19th
Age: 17
Grade 12th [Senior]
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Extra-curricular Activity: Plays on the DHS Boys Hockey Team (Center), Plays Rep Baseball [in the summer and has training throughout the winter] for the Pickering Reds (Pitcher, Shortstop), on the Debate Team (not too many people know about that one ;) )
Job: Nope

Eyes: Brown
Hair: Light Brown, curly, usually kept short-er
Build: Caucasian, Cole has slightly darker tanned skin.  He has a strong body, wide shoulders (not Michael Phelps shoulders but wide), and a well developed chest.  His left arm is a lot stronger than his right due to his pitching but they are both well muscled.  He looks thinner than he actually is, especially from a distance, but when you get close up you can appreciate the 'thickness' of his body.
Height: 6'1
Weight: 160
Markings: None really, has beenknown to come back to school with a wicked farmers tan from his baseball.
Distinguishing Features: Nothing that distinguishing about him.

Likes: Free-time to just relax, Hockey, Baseball, Debate, doing well in school, Hip Hop and R&B music, Toronto Maple Leafs (sigh....), Toronto Blue Jays, Miami Dolphins, Toronto Argonauts, Winning!
Dislikes: Rushing, Sloppy Seconds, losing, people who can't solve their own problems
Fear(s): Failing, not achieving what he could
Personality: Cole has a happy demeanor, he generally walks around with a smile on his face.  If he isn't smiling it is because something is really troubling him.  With his teams he is a very vocal guy, voicing his opinions, congratulating or correcting teammates and trying to keep the team's focus from waning.  He has a typically engaging personality and is a very likeable person.  That aside, he is pretty secretive.  He has a lot going on in his life and doesn't think that he should broadcast it to everyone.  He is incredibly hardworking, rarely complains or gives excuses.  He is an all around good guy.  He is not laid-back, per say, but he is hardly ever rattled and seems ever cool under pressure.  He always has all the answers, knows exactly what to do in every situation and makes the right decisions, both on the ice and in life.  He is hypersensitive to other people's perceptions of him however, he wants people to like him and he wants to be everyone's friend.

Mother: Linda Ringo
Father: John Ellington
Sibling(s): Alicia Ringo-Harring (Adopted Sister, now 21)
Residence: His family lives in a two story house [4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, large furnished basement] , in a upper-middle class neighbourhood.
History:  Cole's father was a former minor league baseball layer, he was born in Seattle, Washington and aspired to play for the Mariners.  He made it all the way up to AAA but never could make the jump to the Bigs.  He met Cole's mother during the summer when they were both in Florida, she was from the Pickering area.  They carried on a relationship long distance, but then when John realized he probably wasn't going to make it to the show, he retired from professional baseball and married Linda.  The two settled in Linda's home town where she was already an elementary school teacher.  John got a job working for the Toronto Blue Jays and they decided to start a family.

Rather than have child they decided to adopt one, a young girl from China. That process fell through and they ended up adopting a baby girl from the Czech Republic, Cole's sister, Alicia.  After raising Alicia, they decided they wanted to have a child of their own, and that's where Cole comes in.

His family was pretty well off already and so another mouth to feed wasn't a big deal.  He was born without any complications and brought home.  John was elated to have a son, he loved Alicia but.... he really wanted a son.  John taught Cole to throw a baseball before he could walk.  He was playing pee-wee baseball at the age of 6.  But living in Canada, Baseball isn't really.... 'the' sport.  Cole also found himself drawn towards hockey as his friends played Timbits.  His parents obligingly signed him up to play the very next year.  And that's how it went, hockey in the winter baseball in the summer, until  he reached high school.

That's when Cole needed to make a decision, either continue into AAA hockey or play Elite Baseball.  Cole finally centered on Elite Baseball, it made his father's day and probably his life.  After dropping his Rep hockey, however, Cole missed it, the contact the fast passed game so he looked into other ways to play.  House league just wasn't good enough for him, and he was still scared to try out for the Varsity team, so he joined a men's league for his grade 10 [Sophomore] year, and played through the winter and once in he was in his grade 11 [Junior] year he tried out for the Dunbarton squad.

All the while, Cole was making honor roll every year and receiving awards fro his academic achievements.  He was drawn into the Debate team by his grade 9 [Freshman] English teacher who was in charge of the team.  Cole went out to a meeting and absolutely loved it.  It was so quick and hard hitting, like hockey but all mental, you had to play defense with your points all the while probing your opponent and then attack their argument.  Unfortunately the Debate team wasn't as 'cool' as the Hockey team and he didn't want to get lumped in with the other debate kids, who were somewhat.... nerdy.  So he hid it, from everyone.

Once he made the Hockey team it was almost impossible to attend meetings, but Cole made it to as many as he could, telling his hockey buddies he had baseball training, and telling his baseball teammates he had hockey practise.  It was a system of deceit that worked pretty well for him, he got to do everything that he wanted.  But he did have to juggle a bit.

She can 'play' as shy from time to time but she has an intense need for intimacy and seeks it out in other women or men near her age or older than she is. Her friendly disposition and 'shy routine' has kept her from gaining a 'reputation' except among those who talk.

Mother: Nalina Oyango
Father:  Sgt. Jefferson Daniels
Sibling(s): Brother, Jackson Oyango
Residence: Her family lives in some of the cheaper apartments downtown. Not 'terrible' but hardly upper-class.
History: She was actually born in Somalia, to a Somali mother whom had a liaison with a member of a United Nations Peacekeeping force near the boarder. Such things were common near the time she was conceived and later born. Her father wanted nothing to do with her, and she has only since met him once in her lifetime, that meeting was not very pleasant however it did lay the groundwork for her travel to North America. Unwilling to grant her mother's demand for United States Citizenship after the fathering of a child by a soldier she was granted what was termed a 'consolatory' reward. A Canadian work visa. Being fluent in both English and Swahili her mother quickly landed a job as a translator. Her stay became more permanent when her and later each of her children passed the Naturalization test. Her older, half brother whom traveled with them began attending school a full two years before Jade herself. She grew up not too far away from the high-school she and her bother now attend.

She was different than the other kids for her entire life, her deep brown skin and exotic features set her apart. Along with her initial struggle to learn English. She was teased almost ruthlessly, and it was then she decided to spite all of these kids who teased her she was going to become one of the -most- popular girls in school. And she got there. For years she simply smiled at insults, tried again and again to talk to some of the more popular girls who continually turned her away. And then... she started developing. A slender, lean figure with hints of intense femininity pert, rounded breasts, a small but rounded behind and a narrow waist along with long limbs and shapely legs turned the heads of a the boys around her and a number of the girls as well.

She did not mind using her natural beauty and shapely body to her advantage. And it helped her to quickly climb the social ladder, even landing her as a co-captain on the cheerleader squad.

1SAZ:  I like the character you put together, and I like your writing style to, which all equals out to good things in my mind.  We do need the Teams Defender spot to be filled, and I'm even happier to see him take up the part of DJ for the schools radio station.  So you're in!

I'm so down!  It appears you still need a center.

Cole Ringo-Ellington
Nicknames: 'Ringo' or 'C'
Date of Birth: December 19th
Age: 17
Grade 12th [Senior]
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Extra-curricular Activity: Plays on the DHS Boys Hockey Team (Center), Plays Rep Baseball [in the summer and has training throughout the winter] for the Pickering Reds (Pitcher, Shortstop), on the Debate Team (not too many people know about that one ;) )
Job: Nope

Eyes: Blue

The long and the short of it is: Cole was born... He grew up... He played sports.... He went to school...

Hey guys and gals, you can find the games OOC, here.

Also, if anyone is looking for a character to create, my Kevin needs someone to take up his twin brother Cal.  I wrote in Kevins history that Cal was straight, but that's easily changed if anyone wants him.

If Cal is still open, I would like to give it a try. No need to change his orientation if he's open. If not, I'll be glad to play the hockey loving stoner fan of the team..^.^  Let me know which would be open so I can work up a character sheet.

Alright, so I'm looking over one more character application, and we'll have two more coming in soon, but since we have enough chars now, I wanted to ask people if they wanted to start?  I'll be easy as pie for me to throw up an IC thread.  This advertisement will still be up of course, since we have enough room for a few more people, but let me know what you guys think.

Um.... I would say mabe wait for TastyBacon since you (i am assuming) promised him a spot, I don't think you should start it without him, unless he is on vacation or has told you he will be absent for a long period of time.

Also we might consider waiting for Vincent, if he is truely interested, I don't know since he has been relatively quiet.

Conversely we can just start now and allow them to join in.

I say it depends on what those two (Vincent and TastyBacon) have told you about their interest and availibility to play.

But I don't mind one way or the other.
