Hi, all! I'm looking to GM a 5e game of a slightly different bent than usual.  This would be a "school" sort of system game, where new adventurers apply and are invited to attend the Planar Supernatural School for Gifted Adventurers, run by Master Mezrain, a wizard of considerable power, on his demiplane of Kesh.

This is the World Information for those interested!

What you sections need to read to decide if this is for you and to make a character: The School, The OOC Requirements, SGA's Social Code, and Chargen! This is a system game that uses Dungeons and Dragon's 5th edition rules! I know, I know--rather small first post, right? Trust me--the World Building was large enough to make up for it.

How this game would be run: It is mostly going to be sandbox in terms of storyline, with special  plot events once per actual month of RL time or special classroom encounters that will utilize the game system. I will be running the teaching staff and the head of the school; I will be posting everyday or every other day as needed. There would ideally be four threads other than the OOC--a thread for classrooms, a thread for non-learning (for dorms, Honeytown, etc.), a thread for the Rifts and Dungeon, and a Smut thread for those who'd like to write sexual content.

I'm honestly not sure how much interest this will even get, as I don't often homebrew, but hey, thought I'd put it out there. :-) Questions, comments, etc. welcome. Constructive feedback by PM would be appreciated, too. ^^

Edit: Sorry for the confusion! This is open--edited the World Building thread to be more clear.  :-)

For anyone reading along: If you need any assistance either in character concept or character sheet, I'm a PM away, or just ask here in-thread! I'm always open to brainstorming.

Lyku

Sherlock, I know we need copies of the PHB, and I have mine, but I think some people might be turned away of they don't have them.  So I wanted to mentioned that I believe you can still get the playtest, which has some of the classes and races in full detail.  I am willing to help pass PHB info if it results in more players and I'm willing to help any who are not familiar with the system and want to learn.

Need more people. :D

Sherlock, any chance that we could use point-buy? I did rolls and didn't get anything above a 14 and got 2 5's >.>

Also, you don't need the PHB. There's a free player supplement on WotC's website that has all the info you need for basic stuff. Although, it looks like the links are borked right now for some reason.

Legal free playtest and the WoTC free player supplement would also be okay. :)

Going over your sheet today, Fractured Wickedness Lyku.  ;D

....two 5s? Jesus. O_o

Can use standard array or use the point-buy alternative on the PHB page 10.

Although to be honest, with two 5s, if you'd like to reroll those abilities, I'd be okay with that. Two 5s and nothing above a 14? That's just....dreadful.

This looks pretty cool. Are you looking for a single adventuring party or just a bunch of characters?

A bunch of characters, ideally, since this will be a mix of sandbox with flavor-of-the-month plots.

I don't have an upper limit just yet. If I get a lot of interest that I'm not sure I can manage, I'll likely advertise for a co-GM.

Better; 18, 16, 15, 14, 11, 8. Two above the array, two below.

Don't use the playtest stuff, not everything in there made it into the game. If anyone needs help making a character, I've run a few games in RL for people at my FLGS and know a bit about what I'm doing.

I'm thinking..... Would a nudist elf barbarian be something alright? :P

Rolls look good and you can use those. Elf barbarian is okay. Would rather avoid nudist, though--it's a bit too tricky to make sense out of in a school setting. Very scantily clad is okay, though.

Hexed

Lots of melee so far. :D

I... probably won't be able to stat up till tomorrow but I'll throw in a pair of warlocks. One male and one female so that whichever is prefered is up for use.

Few things, and keep in mind I've not much GMed 5e other than one other forum game and am running on low sleep, so I could be wrong:

--Saving throws. Proficiency bonus at your character's level is +2, mods on Str and Con are 3 and 2 respectively, so shouldn't those saves be +5 and +4 rather than the 4 and 3 you have them at?

Ditto this, but about your proficient skills--Fighter proficiency bonus at level 1 is +2, and your proficient skills look like they are each missing a point if I read correctly. Also, Intimidation will be falling under CHA.

CS wip. More melee!

I rolled poop so gonna go with the provided stat array. Think I'll make a warm little thiefling paladin. Did we start with a feat or how did it work? He'll probably be asexual or just very slow to start pan. Gonna type out background tomorrow (or today if I feel crazy and don't sleep). Could be from same prime material plane as someone else if anyone feels like comboing backgrounds.

~Features~
Divine Sense
The presence o f strong evil registers on your senses like
a noxious odor, and powerful good rings like heavenly
music in your ears. As an action, you can open your
awareness to detect such forces. Until the end o f your
next turn, you know the location o f any celestial, fiend,
or undead within 60 feet o f you that is not behind total
cover. You know the type (celestial, fiend, or undead) o f
any being w hose presence you sense, but not its identity
(the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich, for instance).
Within the same radius, you also detect the presence
o f any place or object that has been consecrated or
desecrated, as with the hallow spell.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to
1 + your Charisma modifier. When you finish a long rest,
you regain all expended uses.
|
Lay on Hands
Your blessed touch can heal wounds. You have a pool
o f healing power that replenishes when you take a long
rest. With that pool, you can restore a total number of
hit points equal to your paladin level x 5.
As an action, you can touch a creature and draw
power from the pool to restore a number o f hit points
to that creature, up to the maximum amount remaining
in your pool.
Alternatively, you can expend 5 hit points from your
pool o f healing to cure the target o f one disease or
neutralize one poison affecting it. You can cure multiple
diseases and neutralize multiple poisons with a single
use o f Lay on Hands, expending hit points separately
for each one.
This feature has no effect on undead and constructs.
|
Racial
60' Dark vision, fire resistance, thaumathurgy cantrip
|
Shelter the faithful
As an acolyte, you command the respect o f those who
share your faith, and you can perform the religious
ceremonies o f your deity. You and your adventuring
companions can expect to receive free healing and
care at a temple, shrine, or other established presence
o f your faith, though you must provide any material
components needed for spells. Those w ho share
your religion will support you (but only you) at a
modest lifestyle.
You might also have ties to a specific temple dedicated
to your chosen deity or pantheon, and you have a
residence there. This could be the temple where you
used to serve, if you remain on good terms with it, or a
temple where you have found a new home. While near
your temple, you can call upon the priests for assistance,
provided the assistance you ask for is not hazardous and
you remain in good standing with your temple.

Background

Afhala comes from an old world where once more things have begun to blur and mix as they did in its very beginning. Due to events which to Afhala are ancient history and bedtime stories the lines between demons and humans, elves and dwarves, Gods and mortal are getting more and more obscure. Despite the populations being in the decline and the wilderness continuously claiming more of the abandoned ruins of civilization a few small cities still thrive. In one of these Afhala was raised and born as the son of a prestigious clergyman and his wife. He was a good, but not an easy one. Afhala demonstrated many times throughout his early and later life a constant need to confront and solve whatever he perceived as wrong regardless of whether or not he might succeed. Most of the time this meant only getting into verbal arguments or debates, but not averse to physical confrontation.

Becoming a palading was the natural choice once Afhala had repeatedly demonstrated himself too keen to act and lacking the focus required of a cleric. Having lived in a community of mostly scholars and clergy Afhala had not even known such a combination of might and faith existed and was ecstatic to pursue it. Sadly his dying little world did not have teachers for everything. SGA was the one he ended up with as some previous graduate had put a good word of it to circulate around this plane. Taking with him an open mind for new friends and ideas, Afhala enrolled with hes fees covered till the end of his graduation.
|
Misc Notes
Faith: Children of Flower
Afhala, like everyone from his home city, worship a single divine flower blooming in the center of their residence. Many legends revolve around its origin from it being the last bit of the essence of some dead old God to a visitor from another world, but in the end most worshipers don't care; they're simply happy to have it around. The flower has over the years performed countless little miracles, often sprouting small saplings near those in need and helped them for no apparent reason. This has caused the citizens to adopt similar happy and friendly lifestyle. In their faith there aren't too many strict dogmas as no deity nor prophet has ever laid any down for them. However, those who enjoy the divine blessing of the flower as either clerics or paladins are always people who tend to naturally try to good to others regardless of who they might be.

OOC note about orientation. I'm going to play Afhal as a pansexual who is not very interested in sex. NC and stuff is still perfectly good, but he likely won't respond to flirt or sexuality from anyone unless they've romanced for a while.

Sounds great--with the world history, Warlocks have an interesting reputation at SGA because of one named Castigel, so that sounds awesome.

Ooh, new sheet! I'll go over it some time tonight. Very excited to see a paladin!  :-)

Feats can be taken when you'd normally get an Ability Score Improvement--you have to forgo that improvement for a feat. To the best of my knowledge, no 1st level feats unless class/race otherwise say so.

ShadowFox89

If you need someone to Co-DM with as far as mechanics, I don't have the MOST experience in the system, but I have enough.

Seeing as how we have lots of melee though.... half tempted to play a warlock. If playing a drow, would you allow sunglasses? :P

Mostly I'd need a co-GM for mechanics--if I find I need one, I'll give you a holler, and thank you for volunteering!

It was mentioned to me by someone else they might consider casters, so I'm hoping a few pop up!

Year Twenty: The Great Prank
A group of halfling and gnome illusionists manage to cast a permanent illusion over Filigree Hall and the nearby forest. No matter what Mezrain and the other professors try, it cannot be dispelled. Mezrain, in a fit of rage, has Filigree Hall torn down, expels those involved, and in the future bans all halfling and gnome students. People still bump into invisible trees to this day. No one's sure why the spell won't dispel.

There's still invisible trees in Kesh and its been thirty years.  ;D

Halflings and gnomes are possible, but what I require from a player who wants to play one is in what manner they persuaded the institution they were a good fit and not at all likely to vanish an entire dormitory.   8-)

TheFourthShade

Ah.  Roger that.  I'll have to continue reading and study the PHB a bit to learn up on what has changed, but, I am interested.

Mr L

Not gonna lie, hadn't looked at much of the PHB beyond the fighter stuff for the sake of the other 5e game Sherlock is running, definitely gonna study it for the sake of some kind of caster (which will be my first active caster character in any campaign, so some patience may be required). Probably a wizard or a sorc.
