The
Story
So Far...

It is the height of the Roman Republic and, assuming you are a Roman, it is a time of previously unknown prosperity. Rome is uncontested in her power and security, her enemies tremble in her presence, and her allies simper at her feet in the hopes of avoiding her wrath. New slaves are brought to and sold within Rome's cities each and every day. These unlucky men and women, many of them captives of Rome's many wars, are now faced with a terrible future of utter servitude where even they are little more than property with no more rights than a simple beast of burden. Forced to toil, suffer, and die for the pleasure, service, and entertainment of their Roman masters.

To those within Ostia Antica who have some knowledge of the lanista's trade the Flavius family has a proud history, their ancestors were amongst the first lanistas to establish a ludus within the city and their gladiators have been featured in many historic and epic contests throughout the years. But poor management and incompetence on the part of the family's previous Pater Familias has brought dark fortunes to the name Flavius. What was once an exceedingly wealthy, and influential family with several ludi under it's control is has in, the space of a single lifetime, been reduced to little more than a shadow of it's former self. Now, with the death of his father, Titus, Lucius Flavius finds himself the newest Pater Familias of his family and the master of it's remaining holdings.

With but a single ludus to their name and scant few gladiators Lucius and his family are facing the brink of total collapse. But all hope is not lost, there are many ways for a man to make his fortune and many paths to greater glory, so long as one has the courage and audacity to walk them. Lucius still knows how to train superb gladiators, he still has a loyal family as well as loyal servants, and the, the Flavius name still conjures up fond memories of, amongst some of the city's older patricians who can remember a time before Lucius's father, when the warriors of the house Flavius provided them with great entertainment, and even fought to protect the city when it was sacked by pirates many years ago. So long as he can maintain control of his house, and so long as his warriors do well in the arena there is a chance that Lucius can save his family's future and in doing so return their name to a state of power and honor once more.....

The Place

Ostia Antica is a city of greatness, the remains of the destruction wrought by marauding pirates so many years before is finally nothing but faint memory, Ostia Antica is rich, secure, and its people are true loyal Romans. As one of The Republic's larger cities, Ostia Antica boasts a massive population, a constantly growing economy, and an ever growing hunger for entertainment. In order to better sate this hunger the city boasts a magnificent arena where anything from gladiatorial games to chariot races can be observed by both the lower and the upper classes of the population.

The Villa
Standing just outside the city, the Flavius family's home is composed of the villa where the family itself lives, and the Ludus where it's gladiators are trained. Both the villa and the ludus were both built to the highest standards. The villa contains bedrooms, an expansive kitchen, two large baths, a single private bath, and several other rooms meant for aiding in a privileged lifestyle. While the ludus boasts cells for the gladiators, open areas for training, a small medical office, a rudimentary kitchen, a single moderately sized bathing room and even the capacity to erect a small mock arena for more formal practices.








OOC
The Basics
So, this is my attempt to get a gladiator game started up. The game itself will focus on the lives of the Flavius family, their slaves, and their gladiators. As they all try to better their lots in life. It should be noted that this isn't going to be a 'slave rebellion' game. But rather a game focused on playing out and portraying the intrigue, lifestyle, pleasures, and sufferings of 'typical' Ancient Roman people, slaves, and gladiators. That's not saying you can't play a gladiator or slave who is disobedient/etc. It just means that you shouldn't expect to get away with gathering a bunch of unhappy slaves together, grabbing some swords, and storming the Romans. The game will ideally contain scenes of training, plotting/planning, smut (obviously) and real gladiatorial fights. The setting I'm choosing to use is a SLIGHTLY dramatized & altered version of the late republic (for us history buffs) in order to allow more freedom with character creation than a strict adherence to historical record would allow (think Rome from HBO rather than Spartacus from Starz). That having been said a few liberties taken with some historical facts would be the specific's of the gladiatorial matches(we are ignoring most of the rules/regulations said matches actually had in order for more dramatic matches), and a few other things (such as us having slightly more common female gladiators so that female gladiators can be played).

The Combat
Before you read any further, one thing needs to be made clear. Having a character lose a match does not necessarily mean that said character has to die. In fact about 90% of the time a losing character will be allowed to fight another day, the only times this is not true are when the story calls for it and the character's player agrees to it. (Or if a player abandons the game and a character needs to be smoothly written out.)

All other aspects of the game will be freeform, what our characters do/how they do it/etc is entirely up to the players' and the GM's creative abilities. The only non-freeform portion of the game will be the gladiatorial matches themselves. These will be what I call "limited freeform" which is something I like to feel manages to take the risk/unpredictability of using a system to determine combat results without hampering creativity. This is achieved by creating a VERY simple system that is easy to get started with and requires no interaction from the players after character creation. A description of it is in the spoiler below(don't worry it's actually short I just don't want to force people who won't be playing gladiators to read it if they don't want to.

The System

Usage
Player vs NPC fights
When a player's character fights an NPC within the arena system will be used to determine the winner(s). The way this will be done is that the GM (or assistant GM) will preform the necessary rolls and determine the victor of each fight before it takes place and the character who wins within the system will be the character who wins I.C. The creative/fun parts of how easily they win/the exact method of their victory & what takes place during the fight will be 100% freeform so long as the required result is reached. 

Player vs Player fights
When player characters fight the system will also be used to determine the winner(s). The only difference from Player vs NPC fights is that if both players involved feel the result the system generates is not what they want (for instance a person playing a female gladiator and a person playing a male one both want her character to lose in order to initiate a NC scene) the GM will overrule the system and declare the desired result as the actual outcome.

Sats
Explained
The system has 5 stats. The minimum value for each stat is 1 and the maximum value is 20. The stats themselves are as follows

Health:The measure of how much damage your character can withstand before they are defeated. A character with high health is harder to finish off than one with lower health.
Attack:The measure of how strong your character's attacks are. A character with a high Attack stat will be better able to damage other characters, even those with high Defense, than others.
Defense: The measure of how much received damage is negated by your character's ability to block incoming blows and rely upon their armor. A character with a high Defense will be harder to injure.
Agility: The measure of how quick your character is on their feet. A character with high Agility will be more likely to avoid incoming blows and will be able to strike first more often than not.
Accuracy:The measure of how often your character places their attacks on target. A character with a high Accuracy will hit their opponent much more often than one with low Accuracy.

Training Level/Stat Distribution
As your character is trained in the gladiatorial arts their training level will increase. With each increase in training level they will receive more stat points to assign as you see fit in order to represent their growing skill in the arena. This will be discussed further in the next section.

At game start each player is allocated a certain number of stat points to assign to their character as they see fit. This number differs based on what training level your character is in order to represent greater training/skill at game start. (For instance the house champion will start with a higher number of points then an untrained gladiator). The number of stat points available to House Champions, Gladiators, and Gladiator Trainees are as follows:

House Champion: The House Champion starts with 60 stat points
Gladiator: A Gladiator starts with 50 stat points
Gladiator Trainee: A Gladiator Trainee starts with 25 stat points

Outcome Determination/Announcement
As stated before the outcome of a match is determined before the match takes place. The announcement of this outcome will take place via a PM to each player involved from the GM or Assistant GM in order to retain the element of surprise for all the other players.

Below is a list of the roles open so far and a very brief description of where they stand at game start. The roles listed in BOLD are those I consider needed to start the game. The others, while I'd love to see filled, are not going to hold up game start once our required roles are filled.

Gladiator Fighting Styles
If you're interested in playing a gladiator here is a list of the different styles of fighting which you can choose to have your character be trained in, as well as their effect on your stats. Please keep in mind that you can only choose one and that they aren't permanent (you can ask to have yourself switched around OOC and we can make it happen IC). I've tried to keep them as accurate to the actual historical styles as possible while still keeping them 'cool' Also, yes there are female gladiators in our setting if someone wants to play one.

Gladiator Types

Cestus

Cestus: Armed with plated/spiked gloves and boots. As well as metal gauntlets and shin guards. Wearing little to no armor the cestus style relies on natural strength and speed. In order to have success on the sand a cestus must focus on closing the distance with their opponent as quickly as possible, getting within the opponent's guard and using the shorter distance and time it takes to deliver a punch then the swing of a sword to their advantage. This style's strengths lie in offense at extremely close quarters where speed and raw power can make all the difference, and weapon type becomes less important.

Cestus gladiators rarely wear any form of armoring for their chests or heads and are expected to rely on their own skill and speed for defense from an enemy's attacks.

Dimachaerus

Armed with two swords and also lightly armored. The dimachaerus style focuses on skilled use of the blade for both offense and defense. A dimachaerus must learn to know when attack, when to defend, when to advance and when to fall back. A skilled dimichareus is a master at knowing where to move and when to move there, as well as at countering an enemy's mistake to the fullest advantage.

For protection Dimachaerus gladiators often wear a Manica on one arm and can also wear a small chest plate. These items emphasize the style's reliance on the reaction speed and skill of the fighter in order to be made useful.

Hoplomachus

Armed with a one handed spear, a short sword, and a small circular shield in what is considered the 'Greek fashion" gladiators who fight in the Hoplomachus style are considered to be heavily armed and heavily armored. They are trained to advance cautiously, taking full advantage of the superior range their spear provides in order to force their opponent on the defensive. The best hoplomachi learn to instantly recognize when the time comes to abandon their spear and switch to their short sword.

They wear helmets, grieves, a manica, an occasionally a small chest plate for protection, making them one of the best protected gladiator fighting styles, though all this armor often comes at the cost of speed.

Laqueraius

Armed with only a lasso and sword, to the observer with little knowledge of the gladiatorial arts the laqueraius may appear disadvantaged against other styles. However much like the retiarius the laqueraius is trained and equipped to strip their enemy of his advantages and delver a killing blow to an opponent who eventually finds themselves with no weapon or defense against the laqueraius's blade. The style is focused on maintaining proper distance with their opponent and using the lasso to either disarm or trip their opponent, thus opening the path for the laqueraius to charge in with their sword and claim victory.

In keeping with the style's focus on movement and the laqueraius often only wears a manica for protection.

Lorarium

Armed with a whip, short sword, and small shield. The style of the lorarium is similar to a highly aggressive laqueraius. However where a laqueraius uses their lasso to entangle their opponent the lorarium uses their whip to throw the enemy onto the defensive, forcing them behind their shield or to attempt to block the whip with their blade as the lorarium advances in order to finish the battle with their own blade. A skilled lorarium will attempt to force their enemy to block or grasp at the whip in order to disarm their enemy or force him off balance with a quick pull of the whip once it has been caught.

For protection the lorarium must rely on their shield and speed, as this style often wears little to no armor.

Murmillo

Armed with a sword and large square shield in 'legionary fashion' the murmillo is equally effective on defense as on offense. A murmillo can advance slowly behind their shield or charge in to close the distance quickly, as the situation calls. A skilled murmillo knows that their greatest strength lies in their ability to switch from offense to defense at a moments notice in order to blunt an enemy's attack or take advantage of a weak defense.

In addition to a shield murmillo gladiators wear a manica on their sword arm, large protective helmets, and a grieve on their forward leg.

Retiarius

Armed with a net, trident, and dagger the retarius is a style which focuses on forcing their opponent to the ground in disarray in order to delver the killing blow. Their greatest asset is the net and its ability, when used well, to entangle, hinder, and trip the retarius's opponent. The combination of net and trident allows the retarius to be most effective at long and moderate ranges while the dagger allows them to avoid being totally defenseless in close quarters.

The retiarius wears a manica for protection when attacked.

Scissor

Armed with a sword and a specialized weapon unique to the scissor fighting style. An effective scissor must make use of their specialized weapon, taking advantage of it's hooked blade to tie up the weapon of their opponent while the design of its grip insures that the scissor will not be the one who is disarmed by such a situation. Scissors are trained to trust and block with their scissor blade while reserving the sword to parry a well placed strike by the enemy or deliver well placed strikes of their own when they have successfully tied up their enemy's primary weapon.

To accommodate the style's reliance on being attacked before being fully effective the scissor is heavily armored, often wearing a manica on the arm not protected by his weapon, a helmet, a and chest plate.

Thraex

Armed with a small shield and curved Thracian sword. The thraex style has much in common with the murmillo, but focuses on further balancing speed as well as attack and defense. The key to a successful career as a thraex is to know which opponents must be met with defense, aggression, or evasion. As the thraex style is equally suited to any such attempt.

Like the murmillo the thraex also wears a large protective helmet, a grieve on their foreleg, and a manica on their sword arm to aid in the use of their shield for defense.

Velites

Armed with three throwing spears, a short sword, and shield. With similar weapons to a legionary skirmisher the velites style is meant to use its ability to attack from range to its advantage, throwing its spears at the opponent in order to injure or weaken them before closing in for use of their sword and shield. The velites focuses on quick movement and accurate tosses of the spear.

In keeping with its light style the velites wears only a light helmet, which many gladiators choose not to wear at all for what little defensive ability it provides.

Magistri Belua

Armed with a short sword and assisted by trained animals, a magistri belua is considered quite exotic and is often a rare sight within the games. The key to the magistri's success is proper training of what ever beast they will take into the area and knowing how to exploit the distraction said beast provides in order to advance and delver the finishing blow with their blade. The most common animals used by a magistri are dogs, and birds of prey, but other more exotic animals have also been known to be used.

The magistri belua makes use of only a helmet for protection.

Non Orthodoxam

Armed with their own native/cultural weaponry. Those gladiators classified as Non Orthodoxam are warriors who's native fighting style is considered interesting or exotic enough to warrant being displayed in the games. They can be anything from marauding celts, to numidian spearmen.

Role: House Slave.
Age: 22 Years Old.
Gender: Female.

Appearance Details: Other than the brand of the whore house she was brought from on her right inner wrist, Laelia has no other noticeable marks on her body. (Despite some of the pictures below of her with black hair, Laelia has very dark brown hair.)

Personality: Laelia is pretty mellow; she goes with the flow and is obedient. However, as of late she has began to question her future. She's not used to being treated badly at the Flavius villa but she wants to someday return to her life before the brothel, before the villa. Laelia has become a good liar and is fiercely protective of her friends, even it if means getting in trouble herself. She is inquisitive, but tends to play her curiosity down when in the presence of those who could punish her for asking too many questions. She is intelligent as she learned to read and write from a young age thanks to her father, but again, she's very good at playing it down. Despite spending most of her slave years with her head down, just getting on with things, Laelia now looks for something more.

Bio: Laelia was born in a small village outside of the capital. Her mother died during childbirth and she was left with her father; an ailing horse breeder. As far back as she could remember, her father had always been sickly and she took over most of the family chores, including tending to the horses, alone. The village was peaceful and everybody got by without major incident. It was one of those places where everybody knew everybody; they took care of each other as if they were all family.

One night their peacefully village was awoken with screams of horror and bloody battles as men in their dozens blazed through the city. They pillaged and raped on their way through for no reason at all that Laelia could see. She was only fifteenth at the time of her fathers murder. Before she knew what was going on unknown men broke into their house and murdered her father right in front of her. They raped her in her bed that same night. When they were finished and the village fell silent in the early hours of the morning, they collected up the women they hadn't killed and stuffed them into carriages. She remembered seeing the bodies of her village sprawled across the ground with crimson stains splattered about their bodies; they didn't even leave the children.

They arrived at Rome in a couple of days; she didn't count how many. Some of the woman had worse fates than her as the men used them to satisfy themselves every night of their journey. Some didn't return, though she never questioned why. She wasn't stupid enough to ask why. When they arrived at the city, they were sold into slavery at the local brothel and sold for as much as they were worth; Laelia took some solace in the fact that got paid less for her then they would have if they hadn't have touched her. Virgins were few and far between. There, she learned ways to please men and women along with other things that were expected of slaves. She didn't take to it at first but after a few years they broke her in and she started to just get on with things; she didn't have time or energy to hate the men who had done this to her. This is also where she acquired her brand. Unusually, Laelia spent years in that brothel, seven to be exact, before the Titus Flavius took a liking to her and brought her to serve in his families estate.

Appearance Details: Livia has a scar along her arm, usually hidden by a bracelet, due to a horse riding accident from her younger days.
Personality: Livia has a shyness about her, perhaps from the past 4 years of playing the dutiful daughter. She speaks softly, though when speaking to a subordinate she speaks firmly. She is not afraid, however, to go after some things that she wants, can occasionally be a bit rebellious and often dreams of life beyond the walls of the ludus.  Every so often she enjoys finding a quiet spot to simply..observe.
Bio: Livia was born to a life of luxury and ease inside the walls of the ludus, to her father Lucius and her mother. A sickly child at birth, it was feared she would not see her second year, though amazingly struggled onward, growing ever more healthy as each month progressed. As she grew older, her father indulged her love of horses by allowing her weekly riding lessons, presuming her studies went well. She actually became quite skilled at riding.  Occasionally she found herself drifting off during lessons with her tutor, which was rewarded with a firm rap of the cane.
When she turned 16 her parents began to seek out eligible suitors for her, rejecting a few that they considered unworthy. However, as time went on, and her family’s fortunes dried up, so did the suitors. Now, at the age of 22 she fears she may never find a husband, though more because she feels that not doing so would let down her father.
Character's Ons: She enjoys what appears to be genuine affection, strong and dominate partners.

Appearance Details: Lucius has a long scar running down the skin over his right ribs, a souvenir from his legion days. Everything form time in legionary service, to watching his father mismanage the family into near collapse, to having his potential to become a 'new man' taken from him by said mismanagement has caused Lucius to be who he is today. He loves his family and wants only what is best for his children and wife, even if they sometimes don't seem to know what that is themselves. He values his gladiators and slaves as useful and valuable possessions but also believes that they simply are possessions to be used and discarded as needed. The few true friends he has, he holds very close. Anyone who knows him well will tell you that he is strong willed, determined, ambitious, cunning, and above all else steadfast in his belief that the family's future should come before all other considerations. Additionally he has a very high degree of dislike for his deceased father, being forced to live with the results of the man's poor choices and to clean up his mess has forever tarnished Lucius's memories of his father....so much so that he has often considered simply not placing a bust of his father within the room in the villa where the family's honorable memorabilia and the images of deceased family members are proudly displayed.
Bio: Lucius was born in a time when his family was strong and wielded both respect and influence. His grandfather, while not particularly forwarding the progress of the house Flavius, had managed in his time as Pater Familias to insure that the family name lost none of its luster.

As a young boy Lucius was groomed to eventually lead the family, run its businesses and, thanks the thus far continuous prospering of the family name, make an eventual attempt at senate office. If all went well he was to be a New Man, and raise the family's reputation even higher than it had ever reached before. Taught by the finest instructors, schooled in the art of training gladiators by his grandfather, and raised to have proper Roman values Lucius was on track to fulfill all the hopes that were placed upon him.

However things began to change as soon as Lucius's father took control. When Lucius reached the age of twenty his father arranged the marriage between Lucius and his wife, one of the few good decisions the man could be credited with. At age twenty-one, with his wife pregnant and the family seeming to be on a secure footing thanks to the alliance that his marriage had formed, Lucius was given the opportunity to serve in a position of command the legions during a minor campaign. This opportunity was bought through arraignments made by his grandfather when Lucius was but a boy. The importance of this would come into play in the future due to successful military service, especially in a high ranking position, being a key part of opening the path to political opportunity. Lucius served for three years, during which he learned much about the mindset of fighting men, strategic planning, political negotiations and even acquired a very small client kingdom for Rome.

With his term of service fulfilled Lucius returned home high on success and looking forward the the bright future which lay ahead of him. Only to find that his father and nearly ruined the family while he had been gone. The next twenty-two years saw Lucius forced to watch as his father lost the family fortune piece by piece and drove them ever further to the brink of total loss. When his father finally died Lucius was in truth relieved that things had not progressed to a point where nothing could save the family's prospects. He must now attempt to pick up the pieces and reverse his family's fortunes.

Personality: Age and experience has tempered the man. In his youth he was rebellious and ambitious, traits quickly humbled. Reckless and passionate have been mellowed but burn all the hotter when needed. His transition from slave, to gladiator, to free man have left him wise and dutiful, loyal to the house who forged him and jovial and social to those who treat him with respect.
Bio: Conall remembers very little from his childhood beside his dead mother (a mercy) and the death of his father at the hands of a Gaelic raid. He was taken as a boy by a neighboring tribe as a slave where he served a master until he was considered able body enough to fight. His youth was spent raiding and pillaging rival tribes until they foolishly thought to attack the Romans encroaching on their lands.

Conall survived and was caught, taken as a slave yet again, trading owners a few times. His skill with a blade was quickly recognized but his rebellious nature was a constant issue that left him bloody and angry. A few years later he found himself serving the Flavius family, the former doctore molding him into the champion he quickly became. It was this man and the house he served which gained his respect. After serving as champion and earning his freedom, he left at the age of 32 only to return three years later (35) after his former mentor told him of his failing health. In that time Titus also passed, which left two very important roles within the Ludus open.

He was offered the role as Doctore a little over a year ago and like the new Pater Familias, was left with a lot of work to push the Ludus to its former Glory.

Bio: Illyria was an orphan on the streets of Ostia Antica. Caught stealing when she was thirteen, she was sold into slavery. At first she was quite rebellious against her new masters in the Flavius family. One such tantrum resulted in the branding she still has today. Eventually Illyria realized she was better off in the household than in the alleys. She became the ideal slave, willing to do anything for her masters. Illyria has served the Flavius family for over twenty years now. She has started to feel some anxiety over the family's declining fortunes and her own aging, although she remains a very attractive woman.

A small crescent moon birth mark on her left breast(rumored that the mark shows her to be blessed by the Goddess Luna.), and a 2 inch slash on her right hip

Personality: Alcmene is strong will and confident for sure, never one to be shy even when she was little. She has always been bold and one to speak her mind, a trait that has gotten that annoyed look from her father more then once. Alcmene presents herself as having station no matter the state of her families current wealth. The name is renowned and respected, and Alcmene will demand and stand for that respect.

She is used to getting what she wants, though her eye does not normally lean towards the materiel things. Alcmene loves the feel of being in control, being able to tell others what to do, and most of all of owning some of the finest male specimens in all of Rome.

Though she isn't shy about getting a bit dirty. In fact Alcmene has taken to learning archery, a talent taken from the goddess that blessed her. In fact Alcmene has many talents all of which she uses to her advantage. Her mother quick to use them to impress, the mark upon her flesh one that she boasts of most. A blessing from the goddess Luna herself, a small fact that Alcmene doesn't deny in the least.

Bio: Alcmene was born only 7 months after her father returned from his service. The beautiful baby girl born early under the light of the moon. So small and frail they thought she would not make in. But the priests said she was blessed, and would live to grow into a beautiful woman.

Thankfully they were right, and the small baby soon began to grow into an energetic young youth. More legs than anything else she was always found running about the lotus. Keeping up with her brother and watching the gladiators train. Her mother of course insisted on proper lessons, and Alcmene did as she was told. But her father allowed her to take up archery and entertained her slightly boyish activities as long as she presented herself as a proper Roman woman when the time came.

Alcmene enjoyed watching the gladiators train and fight, didn't mind the dirt or grime (not that she sought it out), and took to enjoying her archery and sneaking out about the city during the night. Alcmene is clearly untamed; a trait her parents believe will settle when she is paired with the right man. Little do they know Alcmene has no wish to marry some weak willed pansy that has never known how to hold a sword. It was a defiance that has unsettled some of the men that have graced their home. She simply waves it off saying they were too weak to remain in their walls anyway.

Some could say Alcemne's draw towards the gladiators came from the moment one turned upon the house. He apparently thought them weak and saw it as a chance to flee. He was of course caught, the other fighters cornering him and threatening to put him down. The man did what he thought would safe him and grabbed Alcemne as a means to hold them at bay.

But she refused to move, kicking and biting at the man in protest. The other fighters and her father closed in, this maddened warrior stabbed Alcemne in the side and threatened to finish her off if he could not pass. So they parted to seemingly let him pass, but Conall had other plans and came up behind the pair and dispatched her attacker. The wound nearly taking her life, Alcemne passed out as Conall subdued her would be kidnapper and slept for nearly a week before waking up and proving once again that she was in fact blessed.

Years past and Alcmene grew into a lovely and confident young woman. She embraced their standing and enjoyed the life they tried to regain and portray to the world around them.

Brand on the back of her right shoulder that she received for running away from her last master. A few scars about her body that any skilled warrior can tell were done on purpose.

Personality: Carmina has learned to become a quiet soul within the home she serves. Her voice only heard when it is called for. Some would see this as a meek surrender to her owners, but in truth it is a means of survival. A slave that spoke up to often was most often sold or killed off rather then keep dealing with something so troublesome.

When her masters aren't looking though Carmina is a happy soul. She enjoys gardening, the fresh spring that came with so many blooms always her favorite moment. She tends to have a softer hand when it comes to dealing with those in need. Be it a hurt gladiator, or the small children she sneaks food to outside the lodus walls. When some takes to the time to see Carmina for more then just an object, they find a bright spirit hidden away from someone that could harm it.

Bio:
Carmina was born to man that owned a small butchery, his wife barely more than a slave to his will. She had three older brothers, all of which held more worth to her father then she ever could. Carmina was nothing more than a bargaining chip to him. The small girl all but ignored by him as she grew up in the nearly shattering household.

Years passed and her brothers were pulled into the wars. Leaving her and her mother alone with one man they wished to avoid. Carmina had no idea what happened to them, the years that followed forcing her to become separated from her family for the last time.

Her father ran up a debt with a man that didn't take missed payments easily. So her father did the only thing he could when they came wanting payment or a body. He gave them Carmina, selling his daughter to save his own skin. Not thinking twice as she was pulled from her mothers arms. It was then Carmina began to learn the true darkness that life could hold.

She was used as any woman was, the lender taking his fill of her body. He grew to like her more than most and kept her close as his personal slave and play thing. Years passed like this, surviving and being used or tortured for her master’s entertainment. Till one day she could take no more and suddenly decided to run.

Carmina was of course caught and brought back to her former master. She was beaten and branded as a run away before she was tossed to the slave market to regain some coin. The slavery held her long enough to heal and become presentable, after all who would pay for a slave that looked half dead? When presented at the market she was quickly bought up by the Flavius family and has served there for about a month now.

Personality: Commodus is the eldest son of the patriarch of the Flavius family, and is full of arrogance, bluster, conceitedness and general disdain for anyone and anything beneath him.  Also known as a bit of a psychopath, flies off of the handle and demands satisfaction. He is a fan of harsh punishments to the house slaves for the smallest of mistakes.  No one likes Commodus, but since he is one death away from being the prater, there are enough people who bend his ear and try to earn his blessings.

Commodus is known for his vices.  He is known to have large baccinals frequently, and is a known connissour of foreign wines, women and other lavish things.  He is always planning something grotesque and over the top in his own honor.  It has gotten harder in the recent years, as Commodus does not seem to understand that the family money is not un-ending.

In this vein, loves the gladiator fights and loves the deaths the most.

Bio: Born, raised and always around Ostia Antica.  He has never left the grounds.  He was raised by the many slaves and caregivers in the realm.  Always thought that the "commoners" were beneath him and was taught, either exact or subconciously, and everyone in Ostia Antica was there to serve him.  Commodus's father wanted the military men to respect him, so he sent him to training and tried to set him up with a cushy command, but Commodus frequently did not report or just told the commanders to piss off.  His father has increasingly become more and more frusterated with his son, as Commodus has gotten worse and worse  over the years.

Personality: Very quiet and reserved.  Keeps to himself.  He is a loner, a run away from another life.  He does not want to draw attention to himself and wants people to basically leave him alone.  He wants to fight, and prove that his dogs are the best.

Bio: Ayyur is from Mauretania Tingitana, formerly Morocco.  He is a Roman by birth, as his land is under control of the Roman Emperor.  Wanting a different life for himself, he went north, into the land of the rich.  He was an above average fighter, and knew that he could make money for it.  He wants to show that his dogs and his style are the best, and wanted to go to a fighter stable that would allow him to show that.

He walked for a long time before finding himself here.  He hopes to be accepted as a Gladiator Trainee.

Appearance Details: Like the rest of his Celtic brothers, Conchar towers above the shorter Romans, the crown of his head reaching six foot, three inches mark. His torc and bracelets were taken from him when he was captured, leaving a interesting scar around his throat, from legionaries trying to yank the twisted gold from around his neck and from attempts to cut the close fitting jewelry away. However, once he joined the ranks of the Flavius Ludus, he was given a new "torc" or at least what these Romans think a torc is, to keep him looking looking the part of a marauding Gaul. As such, he also wears nothing in the arena, other then his torc, "warpaint" and a swordbelt of linked metal rings.
Personality: A proud and until just a few years ago, free Celt, Conchar is unhappy and uncontent being a slave and only the fact that he remains a warrior has made life bearable. He seeks escape and waits for the right opportunity to return to his homeland. He holds firmly to his position as House Champion, both for his pride and to keep himself fit for his escape. While his Latin still isn't the best, he knows enough to be able to carry a conversation, at least for a while and he has picked up a smattering of Greek, along with other languages. Like his Celtic brothers, he believes that the soul resides in the head and tries to collect the heads of those he kills in the arena.
Bio: Born to the Lemovici tribe in Gallia Celtica, Conchar was raised in the warrior caste, trained his whole life in the arts of war. As a young man, he joined raids on nearby tribes, stealing sheep and cattle. When he was almost twenty-two years old, he joined with a large band of other young men and traveled south, to raid the Roman Colonists in Gallia Narbonensis. The raid went well but they were caught on the return by a patrol. Skirmishing with the patrol slowed the band down enough for a pursuit force of legionaries to catch up with the raiders, leading to a pitched battle. Conchar was stunned by a sword blow to his head, his helmet saving his life and was taken prisoner after the battle.Transported south, he was sold as an exotic warrior, to those who had never suffered a Celtic raid or had any fear of such. For just about five years now, he has worked his way through the ranks of the gladiators, earning his position with a river of blood.

Personality: While being a proud warrior, Annika is loyal to the death. She has accepted Lucius Flavius as her new master and has come to terms with her life as a gladiator. She loves the thrill of the battle and strives to be the best in the arena to rise within the ranks and lead a life as good as possible for her. Annika is strong willed and stubborn, but knows her place well and wouldnt ever talk back to her master or members of his family unless it would serve them in one or the other way.
Bio: Annika Sigursdottir was born in Dalecarlia. When the romans invaded her home, she was but a girl of 12 years, but that didnt stop her from picking up her fathers sword and trying to fight the invaders. Of course she didnt stand a chance and was cut down quickly. The romans burned her village to the ground and took her with them as a slave.
She was supposed to be sold at the slave markets, but with the heavy scar on her back and her tall build she was hard to sell as a pleasure slave. Her new master though, saw the fire in her eyes and he bought her when she was 14. She received a bit of training and was supposed to be fed to the lions in the arena, but to everyones surprise she picked up the weapons of a fallen gladiator and survived. And she still does. She rose in the ranks of the gladiators and enjoys a rather comfortable life as a regular in the arena.
Character's Ons: She likes to switch between dominant and submissive and loves to play. Passion. Rough, but also tender cuddling as well at times.

If I play one of the younger daughters could my character have a career of some sort, I'm thinking an honorable role like a scholar of some sort Hypatia of Alexandria she was Greek therefore a citizen of Rome. And would be more interesting than "a handsome woman waiting to be married". She could even marry above her station a wife to a widowed man of authority might want a wife able to aid them in his affairs and who has more going for her than looks. Likely would be the youngest daughter the one with the keen mind but not as pretty, so works with what she has.

Is not going to be a radical however she will support the ideals of Rome, she might have issues with women being subordinate to men as much as they are, but be modest in her life not wasting money or being unseemly favoring a good scroll of philosophy over a gemmed necklace.

Possible roles could be teacher to a Patrician families children wanting a Roman and she is likely going to be considered more than worthy which could bring honor to her family that way and be out there as a prospect for marriage, not being pretty although not unpretty she needs to show her other virtues.

Sounds like an interesting concept, I could see my character allowing his youngest daughter to have a small job with him viewing it as a tool to help secure a husband rather than anything else. Especially since her dowery would be the smallest after her sisters were to be married.

Not a job she would have a vocation being a scholar, her job would be secondary, on the other hand Roman women were often well educated for women of the period she would have taking a liking to it more than others. And women did have professions among the Romans of standing if it was considered a proper one, teaching was one that was although not men but children and youths.

One thing might be an issue her spending money on scrolls and sacrifices to the gods for her family, being pious, but its hardly a vice likely she will spend less than her sisters overall.

But she likely would be the daughter least likely to be a headache for her father. She might want her own slave but would likely pay for her property, a woman slave able to tend to her needs since she has a profession.

Appearance Details: A thin scar across his chin from a childhood accident.  A slashing scar that cuts from under his left armpit and over his ribs and abdomen, one across his right bicep from his days in Britain in the service of Rome.

Personality: Artorius is a quiet, thoughtful man, partly of natural inclination and partly of habit.  Known for a pronounced stutter as a child, he was tormented by his older brother for it rather constantly.  Studious and long-suffering, he took the teasing in near silence, giving the habit of soft-spokenness as an adult.  Instead of the lascivious pursuits of his brother, he prefers academic and martial pursuits.  He tends to be a kind, gentle soul and is (quite likely) over-protective of his sisters.  An honorable, loyal man, he holds family and home above all, though there are times it seems his heart is far away.

Bio: Born early in his father’s service abroad to Rome, Artorius learned quickly to stay out of the way of his older brother, Commodus.  Teased mercilessly for his speech impediments, he found solace in the fighting of the gladiators that seemed to mesmerize him, his tireless mind working to devise strategies as he watched, as if the men were simply pawns on a chessboard.  Once he was old enough, after his father’s return, he began learning how to fight under the tutelage of Conall.  Joined more frequently by his younger sister, Alcmene, among the wolves that Conall trained, he picked up archery and horse training as well as the sword training he craved.  Less time spent within the sphere of his brother, the better, he supposed.

At the age of fifteen, he petitioned his father to find a place in the legions for him to serve--better to serve Rome than to live his life idle as his brother did--and insisted on true service, learning the ranks instead of demanding a command.  One could not lead men if one did not understand what men do, after all.  His service took him from Ostia to the far-flung barbarian lands of the Britons.  Serving with II Augusta, he rose in the ranks to serve in great capacity of his commanders with his quick mind and thirst for knowledge.  His commander, seeing his potential for command, took him aside to mentor him and took careful pains to explain the detriment of his silence.  Finding the fault to be physical instead of mental, the man increasingly leaned on Artorius to give verbal orders to the men, training him out of the terror of public speaking and the impediment that his brother had teased him of in their childhood.

After nearly a decade away, he has returned a changed man.  A direct man with a commanding voice in place of the one that once held him back.  One in charge of his life and his futures, determined to do his duty to family and home, despite the sadness of leaving the wilds.  He hopes to rekindle friendships and family connections once back in Ostia.

Character's Ons: Artorius is the romantic type for the most part, though he has found his wilder pursuits have opened a darker aspect to his sexuality, one he rarely acknowledges.

Leviticus remains loyal to whoever purchases him; No choice should he want to continue living. During combat, Leviticus is known for leaving his instincts to guide him to victory.
Bio: Leviticus was a farmers boy at a young age. Raised right with a good sense of morality, Leviticus had never done anything wrong in his life, yet the Gods blessed him with the destruction of his home, the death of his family, and he being sold to slavery. From child to man, Leviticus was molded into a fighter for small time. He was disobedient at first. Yet numerous punishments have broken him into the life of slavery. Leviticus had been fighting since he was a child. From having to fight with other child slaves to growing up into a warrior, Leviticus has built a liking to using only his fists. As of recent, Leviticus had seemed to impress the right people enough to be purchased and brought to Ostia Antica to participate in true Gladiator combat.

As for slavery she just points out every slave rebellion its the foreign male warriors that often the issue as Gladiators they may have value but stick them on a plantation under harsh conditions and they are good leaders its asking for trouble. Why bother when such slaves can be kept in colonies outside the peninsula and native born slaves bred to be passive with good treatment a reward and stern punishments but Gladiators and artists or those with learning could be of value to Romans the special types.

She never goes against superior Roman Society over barbarians, Greeks were Roman by birth but rather building along the lines of Roman virtues and bettering society, a massive slave rebellion could pose a mortal threat if a Hannibal or Alexander the Great type rises as a leader and this in the center of Roman power. Its a vital institution just needs to be nurtured for example if a slave is a Jew why not let them visit a local Jewish leaders family for Passover if they are good, and loyal, on the other hand bad slaves deserve to be openly punished. She also opposes abusing slaves without cause its unseemly and risks damaging valued property.

Just remember, late Empire (when we are playing) Jews were crucified simply for being Jews.  If she ever espoused that view out loud, no matter who her father was, she'd be shunned.

That is why I am confused, a great deal of her views and actions would bring shame and ridicule upon the family not respect. Not to mention her age for everything your going for doesn't make sense. This is just from what I know of that time period, and my personal opinion as well...so yeah take that as you wish. I'm trying to make sense of it so my characters muses are clear on their thoughts towards your character.

Hey guys, I am using this to clarify some things with the game's timeline, since Conall was a gladiator and Champion for a very long time.

He returned four years prior to the start of the game.Conall is a freeman but still works for the Flavius family and helping the former Doctore (old, aging and unfit for the task). When the man died, about a year before game start he took over. Off course the house has fallen in stance/influence for X reasons so Conall has to find a way to make all the current gladiators worthy of a high card event, even the current champ.

He has his work cut out for him.

As you can see, at this point the only roles we are still missing are that of the wife, a third daughter, a second and third gladiator , and a third gladiator trainee. We've filled up pretty nicely, and as such I'll probably be looking to start things off tomorrow, given that we have a fuller cast of house slaves/family/fully trained gladiators then I expected when I listed what roles I'd considered needed for game start.

Dictys isn't looking forward to fighting in the arena although the thought of having so much attention appeals to his vanity. He hopes to stay alive with his looks intact until he can buy his freedom. Dictys considers himself a business man and would rather rely on his charms than his arms. He will cozy up to whomever he thinks can make his situation better... or stab them in the back for the same result.
Bio: A young merchant from Macedonia, Dictys lived well. he spent money freely on wine and whores of both sexes. he also had quite a few gambling debts but knew he could cover them when his next shipment of timber arrived. Alas, it turned out to be rotted and Dictys was ruined. In order to cover his debts he sold himself off as a gladiator because the price for becoming a mere house slave wasn't enough. Dictys isn't pleased with his situation and hopes to find a way out of it soon.

Appearance Details:  Apart from pierced ears, no scars or marks.  Face claim is Eva Green.

Personality:  To her family, Abelia, like her husband, strives to provide nothing but the best for her children.  An educated woman herself, she pushes her children to strive for the best of their abilities, while being there to be the comforting, and at times stern, presence when required.  She is a calculating and thoughtful woman, often thinking a step or two ahead of those around her.  She does have a taste for indulgence and extravagance at times, a habit she's forced herself to repress in light of the struggles of the family finances. 

Towards guests, she goes out of her way to make them comfortable and sated, priding herself upon the reputation of her hospitality.  At gatherings and parties, she can often be the life of the party, an outgoing and carefree spirit that is not afraid to speak her mind.

When it comes to the property of the household, however, Abelia takes a firm hand.  To her, from her privileged life and family upbringing, she views the slaves and gladiators as nothing but property and investments.  She is not afraid to punish either if they, in her mind, break the rules or get out of hand, and has been known, on occasion, to indulge herself when the desire and need arises.  She values loyalty and silence above all.

Bio:  Abelia was born and raised in an old house that prided itself upon it's fighting slaves and warriors.  The well-connected family provided a life of luxury and status which she had grown accustomed to at a young age.  Taught to read and write, she prided herself on being an educated woman.

Although she, at first, was not entirely agreeable to the marriage between herself and Lucius, in time she learned to love and enjoy his company.  His pride, values, and determination attracted her all the more as their marriage began, and soon she gave birth to their children, taking pride in each and every one of them.  She takes a strong and steady hand in their lives, seeking nothing but the best for each and every one of her children. 

When Livia was a mere babe, stricken with illness, Abelia was at her side day and night, holding the child, there for every moment until she was finally beginning to show more and more signs of health.  With the state of the finances of the family, Abelia continues to try her hardest to find a husband for Livia, fearful of failing to do so.  When Aleceme desired a chance to take up arms and practice, she fought and resisted, wishing for her daughter to remain focused upon her studies, until Lucius stepped forward and gave his permission.  She shares her husbands frustrations about Commodus, and his actions, unsure of what to do to get her son back on track in life.  When Artorius was a child, she dreaded his stutter, attempting, fruitlessly, to find someone to help him.  With his return, she has high hopes for him, and his new found presence and command.

Character's Ons:  Loyalty.  Submissiveness in others.  Oral sex.  Tormenting slaves, particularly the rough and tough intimidating gladiators.

Personality: Hanno is a very jovial sort, despite the circumstances of his birth, and life, and current situation he can still be seen with a smile on his face and a joke on his lips more often than not. Hanno rarely takes anything too seriously, and is content to simply go through each day without much care for the next.
Bio: Hanno was born to a slave mother from a slave father, supposedly he has some Carthaginian in him, his mother's father's mother's mother or some such, but Hanno has no real knowledge of it other than what his mother told him while he was a boy. For the most part of his life Hanno lived life of a typical Roman farm slave, every day he would go out and tend his master's fields, every night he could come back to the villa and go to sleep.  Eventually his master's farms hit hard times and in order to make good on debts Hanno's master sold him at market. As fate would have it Hanno eventually wound up on the auction block in front of Lucius, who purchased him in order to train him as a gladiator.

Appearance Details: Has the brand of the house on the inside of her left arm. Has light pink markings around her wrists from the shackles that were too tight.
Personality: Perhaps more reserved and reformed than other slaves, Cygfa comes from noble upbringing. Quick witted, charming and refined, her old self is seldom seen as she serves the Dominus and his family. She is learned in a few arts, and how to hold her temper and emotions in check.
Bio: Cygfa is the daughter of a noble back in Britain (Britannia) and was born to ease and comfort. She had two older brothers, and her role in life was to be raised to be a lady and be married off, bear sons and please her husband. She took to her learnings well, and Cygfa had a charm about her that made many adore the young girl. There is not much else to comment on her youth, other than she excelled in becoming a Lady. Apt at singing, embroidery and stitching and more. At ten she was contracted to marry, and would be wed on her 13th summer.

However, with the spread of Rome, their lands were taken over. Her father was allowed to keep his property, sharing profit and land to Rome and keeping in line. He agreed, and Cygfa's nuptials were put on hold. Her enjoyment of outside was restricted and she was kept away from prying eyes of greedy soldiers.

When she turned 16, the revolt started and the men of her fathers lands took to arms against the soldiers. They were promised aid from Cygfa's former betrothed and his men, but where left to carry out their futile stand alone. They were of course beaten, and the home raided. Before her father and brothers were executed along with those who did not perish in battle, they were made to watch as Cygfa and her mum were marched out to the front. Having kept the women a secret for so long, Cygfa could hardly remember the outside world. The Centurion told them that the women would be taken back to Rome and sold into slavery. Appearance Details: Titus is a tall man, with broad shoulders and very sturdy of appearance. There is little in the way of blemishes, for Titus has lived a very comfortable life. A few marks here and there, but nothing of note.
Personality: Titus is a man of comforts and needs, and he always gets them met. If not? His temper is one of volatile nature and cruel manner, and slaves have paid their ultimate price for the slightest of indiscretions if his mood so calls for it. He was a favoured nephew of his uncle, and was raised by politics through the man. He is manipulative, smart and quick witted. Knowing he has money and the power of his name behind him has lead him to be arrogant. However, it also works against him and can be outwitted by any when the strutting peacock is on show.

Appearance Details: Cassian has a tattoo on his right shoulder and upper bicep that was given to him by his previous owners. He has a few scars on his back from whippings as well as marks around his wrists and ankles from restraints. He also has a small scar on the palm of his right hand after having something shoved through it. He has a brand of a 'B' on his left breast, just above his nipple as a souvenir from his previous mistress, so that he would always remember her name and what she did to him.

Personality: Cassian, when around other slaves only, can be humorous, uplifting and nurturing, but he knows when he should shut up and do what he's told. He's a good guy who's somewhat resentful of how he came into his life of slavery. He's a passionate, trustworthy guy who's smarter then his status depicts. He was previously a warrior and this has shaped him into a cool, collective, sometimes stoic man; he can take a lot of metal and physical pressure or abuse and is good at keeping his cool when it comes to his emotions and opinions.

Bio: Cassian was originally a Gladiator trainee under the house of Domitrius where he learned how to fight, honed his physic and learned how to take discipline. He was training there for around a year when the house suddenly decapitated; whether this was sudden or in the works for months, nobody knew. The house slaves were sold, the house nobles had completely vanished other than the oldest son, even the Gladiators were sold off to other houses. Unfortunately for Cassian and most of the trainees, the oldest son could not find places for them quick enough at other houses and therefore sold them into slavery for a quick sell.

At the age of nineteen, Cassian entered the slave house and his world changed forever. He could no longer be the warrior he'd always wanted to be, instead, he was forced into a life of sex and servitude. He only spend less than half a year in the brothel before he was sold to another house, the Ovidius house, as the wife's personal servant. She was an older woman, bored with her husband and her mundane life; she'd grown complacent and needed something to distract her. Cassian was that distraction. She wasn't a kind woman, which he learned quickly, and his time in Gladiator training only served to help him as she took out her frustrations on him. She hit him, whipped him, restrained him like a dog, fucked him, branded him; anything that she could get her hands on, she used to hurt him. Her husband knew, of course, but only treated him worse; it was a wonder how he managed to keep his body weight healthy with the amount of meals he missed out on.

After she grew bored of him, Cassian was sold onto another house for a tremendously low price. Around two years later, after he'd turned twenty-three, Cassian was purchased by the Flavius house and has been there ever since, surviving.

Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

So the city of Pompeii was still standing and under Roman control at the height of the Roman Republic.

Appearance Details: A Tattoo on his left arm called the Helm of Awe, a Celtic symbol to induce fear and to protect against abuse of power. Many scars.

Personality: A man in love with himself more than anything else, he has learned to love life and has long grown used to enjoying what he can for as long as it lasts. He loves drinking, eating, fighting, sex (Not very particular over who it is with), and the adualation of a loving crowd after a victory, and he is very vain. He is a friendly individual overall, but some think of him as lacking a conscience, for even though he has killed many, many people, he doesn't seem to change, enjoying what he can when he can, and always living in the moment.

Bio: Born to a Celt tribe on the Iberian peninsula, he was not born to any leader of the tribe, or anyone important or famous. His father was a worker of the land, stount and silent, and his mother was in equal measure silent and submissive to her husband. Therefore, there was some debate over the child that they had. Loud and heady, even as a small child, he was lean and strong, with quick feet and fists and a quicker smile and an infectious laugh. He had as many friends as he had enemies among the youngters of the tribe, as he respected none and all, irreverent and playful, which frequently got him into trouble.

It wasn't long until a sword found it's way into young Bran's hands, and whether it was a mistake or a boon was a matter of great discussion among the elders of the tribe. The blade flowed naturally in his hands, becoming an extension of his arm with only a few months of training. Bran loved fighting, and he loved using the blade. He was ambidextrous, so two swords worked as naturally for him as one. At the age of Thirteen, he could best just about anyone in the tribe in a fair fight. Lean, agile and quick as a lightning bolt, the name chosen for him by his parents proved to be a happy coincidence. His creativity and love for elegant swordplay made him well hated by those he beat, as he frequently, in the name of fun, humiliated them during the fight.

However, despite this, he was introduced into the tribe's fighting force at the age of sixteen. While the discipline suited him little, the armor and the fact that he could now buy his own blades were an acceptable bonus. He was quit ehte ladies man, and he was frequently on the run from some angry husband or another. Despite this, was a loyal friend to those close to him, even if they had to endure some ribbing and pranks.

At the age of twenty, his troop enagaged an inviding Roman legion, who, despite the skill of the warriors, made quick work of the Celts, capturing many of the wounded which included a 20-year-old Brandan, who had suffered a serious wound to his chest with an arrow. His left lung had deflated and he hung in the balance between life and death until he reached Rome. However, he recovered quickly afterwards, as he was meant to be part of the attraction in the games happening at the time. Once he was fit and well, he was presented to the arena for execution ad gladium. The first gladiator sent against him was quickly dispatched, despite the fact that Bran was armed with only a dagger. He picked up the dead man's two blades and proceeded to beat three more gladiators, earning him the love of the crowd. However, three gladiators were sent out at once against him and, while he killed one and injured another, he found himself on his back on the sand.

And laughing, saying," This is a good death," In the broken latin that he had learned during his time there. However, the crowd, and the standing master of the games, declared that instead of death, he would be granted life in slavery, to perhaps one day earn his freedom. He was bought by one of the local Ludi, and was thence trained. He fought many fights, earning many victories and much coin, which were quickly spent towards food, drink and pleasurable company. He found that fighting in the arena was far more fun than anything he had experienced as a free man, so he held no thought for tomorrow. His near encounter with death had turned an already fun-loving man into a man that enjoyed life with a manic happiness, knowing that his life hung on a thread either way, and he would rather die having enjoyed it to the fullest than any other way.

When the master of the house died seven years later, the man's heir decided that he wanted to go into politics, selling his ludus and all the gladiators and slaves within, Bran included, who found himself sold to the house of Lucius Flavius, in Ostia Antica. Thinking he would recieve the treatment of a house champion from Rome, which he was, he found that the house of Flavius already had a champion. However, Bran was not one to be put off by mere details. After all, for one to become champion, one had to follow one simple rule:

Personality: To her new owners Marit can be a bit testing. Not used to the slave lifestyle she lacks some of the home maker’s talents, and tends to have a sense of still being worth more then simply an object. But she has learned that without a certain amount of compliance she will be punished, and that would be something Marit rather avoid.

To the others of the house she is rather pleasant and fun loving. Marit misses her old home, and hates those that took it from her. But she does still find small joys, music and dancing being two of the few things that she still loves. Marit also still loves the good things in life, wine, fine clothes, and has gained a rather wonderful application for gladiators. But knows those things will only ever come in small stolen doses....but a girl can try can't she? :P

Marit is also well educated for a slave, coming from money before Romans destroyed her home. She speaks several languages and knows how to maneuver within society, even if she no longer holds any standing in it.

Bio: Marit's father was a well off grains trade’s men in Egypt. His holdings and name were well known and allowed Marit and her siblings to grow up with standing and a good education behind them. Marit was a sweet child, a bit spoiled at times, but usually ends doing the right thing in the end.

By the time she was 13 Marit found herself already engaged and promised to one of her father’s supporters. The man was 30 years her senior and not attractive in the least. But her father needed the man’s good will if he was going to achieve the goals and status he had been coveting for years. And despite Marit's fear and disgust with the man, she did as she was told and married him a few months after she 'became a woman'.

Marit did not enjoy being with her husband, but she did enjoy the freedoms he gave her and the way he spoiled her. Seeing to keep his young and beautiful bride happy he allowed her to study as she would as long as she played her proper role, in society and in the bed room.

Marit did at one point find herself with child. But tragedy hit their home and she lost the child only a few months into the pregnancy. The priests insisted it was a sign due to incoming Roman plague. All Marit knew was she had lost the one true thing in her life, and spent a great deal of time dealing with it before finding a bit of her old energy once again.

When the Romans began to really take hold of Egypt Marit found herself trapped in the middle of a war. Her father and husband were part of a small group that was trying to refuse the trade demands. This very clearly became a mistake when Roman and Egypt both turned against their decision. Marit woke up one morning to the sounds of clashing metal and horrific screams. Instead of trying to come to terms, their families were marked as traitors and killed off. The slaves taken and the woman of title turned to slaves and given as prizes to the Roman's as a sort of consolation.

Marit now a slave is forced to make the long trip back to Rome. The men of course wished to use her as they would any other slave. Thankfully Marit drew the of man with higher rank, and instead of being passed around Marit found herself being used as his personal servant and play thing. The long trip knocked the truth of Marit's situation home. Her new standing was something she refused to accept but did her best to endure.

By the time she found herself in Roman her current 'owner' had grown tired of his traveling pet and tossed her in with the rest of the slaves he had for market. Thinking he could get a pretty penny for a slave that was exotic as well as educated enough to be useful to any house she found herself in. While on the bidding block she drew the eye of someone at the Flavius family Ludus. She now finds herself there, and has been there for nearly year.

Appearance Details: A curved scar along his left hip.
Personality: Irenaeus is very soft spoken and well mannered. He accepts his lot in and life, always happy to serve the master of the house. When alone, he often has a glazed over appearance, his mind wandering.
Bio: Born with the gift of a philosopher’s spirit and keen of wit, Irenaeus was destine to become a great teacher if fate had not intervened. Wandering upon the beach one night, having left his companions had a celebration in hopes of finding some inspiration for a verse he was working upon, Irenaeus was set upon by brigands. They quickly overpowered him, his last memory of the conflict being the sound of a club of wood driving against the back of his head. He awoke to the tossing of a ship upon the sea; his limbs bound together, countless others in the same situation as he pressed in around him.

It was only after making landfall upon the lands of the Roman’s did Irenaeus truly begin to understand what had befallen him. A part of him had always suspected that he was merely being held for ransom, something that seemed common for the coastal cities. Such hope was dashed, understanding that it was slavery that he was destined for. With this understanding came a curiosity of how he would be put to use, his frame lacking the physical attributes required for manual labor. He began to worry that perhaps he would be cast into the arena, a fate that often left him awake all night, a cold sweat upon his brow.

Hoping to prevent such a fate, he found himself spouting verses whenever he was paraded through the various markets. It was in the city of Ostia Antica that his spouting found fruit, his life purchased by the Flavius family to replace their aging tutor, a man too frail to be of any use. Thankful to be able to use his intellect, Irenaeus has applied himself completely to the role of teacher, serving the family these last fifteen years.

Marcus or "Dux"

Role: Blacksmith. Specializing in blades and armour.
Gladiator Type: N/A. If he were to fight he would logically fight as a Murmillo. As a result he favours these fighters.
Age: 46
Gender: Male.
Orientation: Straight.

Appearance Details: Marcus is tall at six foot and well built. Muscle goes with the job and he was a soldier. Even if he wasn't working he would keep himself fit and healthy. Also part and parcel of the job are the myriad of small scars on his arms from flying sparks and crackling charcoal. His skin is toughened and darkened from the forge and soot and the constant grip and use of his tools. His hair and beard reek of smoke after a few days of work.
He has a tattoo of an armillae on both of his upper arms and 'S Q P R' on the back of his right hand. He is seldom well or cleanly dressed, but there is no point of being either in his line of work. He does however take regular baths.

Personality: Marcus' default position on life is gruff indifference. He is equally disparaging about the gladiators and the owners. One group he accuses of being soft and effeminate and the other of never getting their hands dirty or doing a hard day's work in their lives. The world has not been an easy place for him at times and he's hard back. At least until you get to know him that is. Underneath that gruff exterior is a calm, confident man who knows that he might not be as quick as he once was, but that his strength is undiminished. That his experience and knowledge are great and that he is very good at what he does. Marcus has seen it all before and is not easily flustered or intimidated. Neither does he back down easily or lose face. His anger is slow to rouse and when slower to settle and is mighty. He might not be a young man or a Gladiator, but he was a soldier of twenty five years service and can handle himself accordingly.
Secretly he is very attached to both the fighters and his employers and is quietly, but fiercely loyal to both. He would also be very happy to have his heart put back together if he could ever find someone to replace his dark eyed girl. He would never admit to any of these things to anyone he did not absolutely trust though. Currently no one has earned that trust.
There is one thing that he does not compromise on: No one, but no one uses his tools or his forge. Anyone who does can expect him to be very, very angry about it.

Bio: Marcus has worked hard for everything that he has. It might not be much to someone like the master, but everything that Marcus. He was born into a large, poor family and got into all sorts of trouble as a youth. Then when he was old enough he joined the army to escape the poverty and hopelessness. The army fed and clothed him, gave him purpose and drive. Later it would give him a craft too. Sadly he got very little opportunity to visit his family. Returning from one campaign he found they had gone, vanished and no one knew where.
He returned to the army and learned a trade. He claims it was so he wouldn't have to dig ditches and lay roads, but is undeniably good at what he does too. Marcus spent the next ten years learning and then honing his skills, going wherever the army took him. It was during this time that he won his silver armillae. He doesn't talk about how he won them, but it was a reminder of this event that he had them tattooed on his upper arms. He only wears the torcs themselves on high days and holidays. When he does they are always immaculately polished and bright.
At the age of forty his service was complete and he left the army, set himself up a little shop, bought a dark eyed slave girl and tried to settle down. It didn't work out. The shop lost money because all he wanted to make was blades and repair armour and all he got were dull sheers and horseshoes. He could have tolerated that as it made a living, but then his dark eyed girl who was with child died of that child and he sold up and moved on as soon as she was buried. The army wouldn't have him again, but the ludus would and he is at home with the routine, the yelling, the training and the stream of work to fill his days. He is happy, well not exactly happy, but at peace with himself.

Character's Ons: I'm not sure. I think it rather depends on how he develops.
Character's Offs: Pain. Blood. Messy stuff like that. He does not approve of orgies or men fondling other men. He sees both as foppish Grecian weakness.

Bio: Born in the heart of Ireland , she was the only daughter of the High King, and treated more like a son, just as she wished it. She could hunt and fight alongside any man of the Tribes with ease, and held much respect for her exploits and skills. Able to ride horse, shoot bow, swing a sword and wrestle with the best of the men, it was no surprise to see her in battle parties, her Father having no qualms with sending her to settle disputes and raids. Many sought her hand in marriage, yet she thought herself to young and too fierce to settle to a man... leaving her at her capture a virgin. She was taken in a raid while on the coast of Bregia, and has been too much trouble for the entire length of time she has been in captivity. She finally ends up purchased by the Ludus Flavius, her battle instincts obvious.
