Mature Fantasy Quest - Strong Writers Desired
« on: July 17, 2016, 10:41:23 AM »

The OOC for the active game is now available at the link below:
https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=253401.msg12529483#msg12529483

Game Status: Game is Active, New Character Submissions Welcome (PM Darkmoon), Q&A
This game has received enough interest and I am opening it up for character submissions. Please PM me your character description, desired abilities, desired background, and a character portrait. You may also wish to e-mail me your non-con-vs-consensual preference so I can make sure the NPCs act accordingly with your preferences in the future, if that becomes an opportunity.

Greetings!

I am a GM looking to host an adventure for experienced, quality writers. Staples and requirements to summarize this game are:

Length: I am looking to run this long term, with players dropping in and out as time permits.

Writing level: Experienced writers only. Details and description are important.

Post Length: One to two paragraphs or more. Good writing and thorough description are valued. Play your role, and let us get to know your character.

Theme: High Fantasy, D&D/Tolkien races with Game of Thrones style mature themes and dialogue, original setting, with deities, monsters, political intrigue, war, and most of all, exploration.

Smut Level: Secondary to plot and adventure, but certainly welcome. Do bring the sexiness, but realize it is not the focus.

Combat: Written, with GM dictating outcomes, and dice rolls in an OOC thread for some actions. GM will govern this, so don't be intimidated. Should be very little math in this writing-focused, freeform game.

Party Alignment: Neutral to good overall party focus, but evil characters are welcome if they do not distract overall from the GM's goal to carry the plot forward.

PC Races:Humans, Elves, Half-Elves, Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Pixies, Half-orcs, Ogres, Merfolk (legs on land, fins in water), Succubi, Sirens. Werewolves. Vampires (secondary race option for humans and elves.) Please, no anime characters or art.

PC Classes: Occupation and class are flexible. Please consider the theme. Please choose a character with novice power, for growth, balance, and to make the acquisition of new abilities, positions, and objects fun and to provide a sense of progress. No god-moding as a super powerful sorcerer, please.

Please note: once I garner enough interest from this basic info, I will provide more world details and open up to character submissions.[/b] Please expect a fun, engrossing narrative and adventure and only apply if you are willing to write well and with a degree of dedication for the readership that are your fellow adventurers and the GM spending the time to make this a high quality game. I will be happy to answer any basic questions here, and will update this first post with game status or links to new threads as they are introduced.

Plot Teaser:

Quote
The Imperium of Man is over. It has been a year of terror since the sinking of the East brought on by the bomb. The choking dust that clouded the skies and blotted out the sun has settled over the dead grasses of the plains. The brittle shrubs, flaking away like dead skin over the Edgelands, are seeking renewal. The rains have returned. Airu, our world, endures. Will we?

The Imperium of Vilirum discovered something dark. We of the many races and nations that dwelled along the Edgelands, before they were Edgelands and instead a forty leagues-wide arc of land that would be fortunate enough to escape the heat, we see it now. We flee from it. Figures of shadow and wretched, them, wrapped in filth and violence, twisted and hateful; they emerge from the ashen wastes. They climb forth from the great hollows, black, diminutive figures among the burned spikes of flame-whittled tree trunks. They say Vilirum destroyed itself to destroy the coming Plague, as these creatures are called. They say they destroyed a civilization as old as memory itself, a culture, all of its art, its innocence, and all of its abuses, oppression, and wickedness with it. The peoples of the Edgelands and beyond do not weep for the end of that oppression, but we weep for the children, the mothers, those that did not deserve an end for nothing.

There is no time to mourn ash. The Plague comes. We are refugees, fleeing what is left of the lands we called home. Some of us saw the Plague ourselves and lived to tell about it. The murder. The bestial raping. Women and girls being dragged East by nightmarish shapes or heard screaming in the night beyond the fires. The men, burned alive, torn to pieces, made to resemble the stuff of the earth. Odd peoples find themselves joining together in mutual terror, seeking some semblance of the gods' gifts of fellowship and compassion to get through. West. Go west. The prophets scream it in the night, wailing old women taking up their chants. We don't know why we believe it, but we follow. Can the prophets be trusted?

Our band does not follow a prophet. We follow a farmer. An old dragoon, a man named Geldahar, who tells us simply that he served his time for the Emperor and earned the freedom to work the gods' soil and see his sons and daughters rise up in Vilirum to stand on their own two feet. At least, that's who he was. He has nothing left in all of Airu, his children lost to the savagery. We know not why we follow him. At least, nobody has told me why they do. I know my reason. Compassion. I have nobody left to trust from my old life, and in Old Geld I see the same. I see myself, in need of someone, something to hold on to and see set right. There is nothing left to lose, and everything left to gain by moving in one direction. West is hope. West is life. If not, damnation will find us all, lest it drive us mad in the flight there from.

To get interest, you'll need to explain the plot/premise to this game. Is it system or freeform?

I am curious. But I would like to know some more first.

I suppose my most immediate question would be the circumstances of all of our characters coming together. I can only assume we will come up with wildly different characters with different ambitions. What is the primary hook that pulls us into a single adventuring troope?

, the primary goal will be, initially, to escape an enemy known as the Plague, and get to safety by moving west. At least to begin, the group will be united in that they've entrusted Geldahar, an experienced dragoon from the destroyed region of Vilirum, to lead them to safety. In general, people tied to Geldahar will see the advantage of numbers, and that Geldahar seems competent, skilled with sword and armor, and carries himself like a leader, though an aging one. Whereas many factions forming and similarly moving west are shaping up on sectarian or questionable grounds, anyone that encounters Geldahar's band would find themselves both with a trustworthy person, whether their intentions are good or ill. Backgrounds are expected to vary widely.

Semi-freeform. Mostly freeform, but sometimes I like to roll dice to let chance take responsibility for someone's untimely mangling.

Just about there. Allowing for the inevitable drop-outs, I'd like to see if a few more people are interested. I will provide more world details soon as well. Just a note, if it wasn't clear, this is intended to be a drop-in/drop-out game. That is, I am expecting some players will drop out and become either temporarily or permanently inactive. That's a sad fact of these online RPGs. At the same time, I am also going to actively recruit more players to join in if the character count drops. I am hoping for a loyal and dedicated group but, in order to account for the realities of anonymous role-playing games, I want players to rest assured I will dedicate myself to keeping the game going.

So it's some kind of Banner Saga from the inside?

Are there some character creation guidelines - stereotypes and so on - apart from the races you mentioned, or are you leaving it to our overproductive imaginations? Something as simple as roles you need filled would be fine.  :-)

+1 for interest.

Definitely interested, especially after reading this. It's good to see a GM with a realistic expectation of player availability interest; I'm running a game myself that has seen highs and lows, currently lows, and I've come to terms with the fact that the game will go on as long as myself and my fellow GM's are interested, and our players can be as inactive or as inactive as they please, with no obligation and thus no need to 'quit' the game if they're still somewhat interested.

I imagine I'd be one of those players; I don't have a ton of free time, but I've been itching to be a non-GM member of a group, and especially eager for a fantasy setting. I'm comfy playing men, women or otherwise, smut, smut-lite or no smut, so I'll see how the tentative roster shakes up before I begin to plan something.

I’m not big on system games, so it’s great to see a freeform (with dice) fantasy game pop up. I also really, really like the idea that everyone starts as novices, and that the focus is on development and growth rather than showing off how amazing your character is. I’ve always preferred stories about becoming heroes, rather than starting as them ;)

Kudos to you. As I was writing up that teaser I was definitely inspired by Banner Saga, but only in the sense that it provides a greater arc and urgent need to move over diverse terrain. The core is still high fantasy in the traditional Tolkien/D&D sense, and none of the lore, story, or other components from BS will have any relevance here. Please consider it just a strikingly useful and inspiring parallel in plot, similar to a MacGuffin.

If the classes/races, theme, and teaser didn't provide a sufficient foundation, I will throw out some basic samples of possible character types to play. By no means are you limited here, and I encourage you to create a character you like within the medieval-fantasy context.

Sample character types could include:

A knight from Vilirum who no longer has an Emperor to serve (whose Empire was destroyed)
A city thief or rogue who escaped the city, having learned secret knowledge (to be provided by GM) about the "bomb" before it hit.
A spirited young mage from a tower in the Edgelands, who watched the blast, the Plague come, and his academy get overtaken before escaping.
A princess or noblewoman, seeking safety, perhaps the very princess of Vilirum going by another guise until she reaches safety.
A barbarian or raider who came to the Edgelands to pillage Vilirum, but turned back when the Plague came.
A high or wood elf from a forest or rivertown in the Edgelands, also in flight.
Etc.

Yes, freeform, with dice rolls when suggested by or performed by the GM. The focus as a player will be on writing, description, detail, and painting a character and a world with us.

You have it in a nutshell. Drop-in/Drop-out. As GM, I will indicate as peacefully as possible when a character has left the scene due to inactivity (if they don't do it themselves (please do!), and they will have the option to emerge later. I will try to let the dice decide when a character gets killed, and certainly when a player is engaged. In other words, your character won't be killed off if you have a family problem that takes you out of the game for a month.

You truly get that sense of adventuring party comradery when your characters rise together out of hardship and overcome it. The very best RP comes later on, when you have a history together, old things to reference and play off of, and personal relationships develop between characters, whether they're feuds or friendships or sneaking blowjobs in the stable. Hey, I know what website I'm on.

In the opening g posts under theme. He states this will be a high fantasy/ tolkeinesque setting.

I wouldn't read too much into the use of 'bomb' at least not in a literal sense.

The theme is generally medieval fantasy, but elements of steam technology may make themselves apparent in limited ways. Sorcery will certainly play a significant factor throughout. There are no guns. Generally, the average character in the party will have no knowledge of what the "bomb" actually was. Rumors suggest it was some type of magic or artifact employed as a weapon against the entirety of mankind, to destroy the Plague before it could spread. That suggests that at least the central Imperium within Vilirum would have been dealing with the Plague for enough time to decide the only measure to protect the world was to destroy everything within the Plague's reach. The ultimate, terrible tragedy is that mankind did not stop it, and lost its most advanced and powerful known civilization in Airu. That leaves a great vacuum of power and also a horrendous despair among humans, and an opportunity for other nations, factions, and forces to rise up and fill the vacuum.

TY, clears that up.  My next question was going to be about the viability of a technomancer type character- someone who uses her own blood to power magically-imbued automata and such, but if steam tech is so limited, probably not a good concept.

Technomancer as a term sounds off with regard to the setting. I'm having instant images of William Gibson's Neuromancer 80's style cyberpunk, or 90's cybergoths running around a rave stabbing themselves to deafening bass. The dscription that follows though is reasonable. In my comment about limited steam power, I'm referring to the type of odd and very occasional scientific/engineering types who have odd experiments and really draw attention to themselves, but haven't really been discovered or had their works expand out into the masses. In that sense, we could accomodate a gear-driven, steampunk style set of automatons. If you want to use blood magic particularly, you have to be prepared to be treated like a bit of a pariah, or to keep your methods largely to yourself. In a medieval fantasy realm, what your character would be doing would be considered evil if blood were involved, and she/he'd be weighed to see if she were heavier than a duck.

Happy to have your interest! If you want to ask any questions before going through the work of submitting a full character sheet, feel free.

Where's the character sheet?

Out of curiosity. Does anyone know how many people are in on this?

I have received PMs from 7 different people since opening up to character submissions. So far I have two approved characters (yours, Ontan) and have more to go through. Thank you for your patience as I weed my way through this process and discuss characters with the applicants. I will be creating a series of same-sized theme-specific portraits for your characters based on the character art you submit to me, and they can always be updated in the future. These portraits will be included on the first page when a sufficient starting party has been assembled.

Update: We have four approved characters so far:

A wood elf ranger (female, fighter)
A human ranger (male, fighter)
A priestess (female, cleric)
A human thief (female, rogue)

I'm very pleased with these approved characters so far. We need a few more to balance things out. We could especially use a magic user and a "tank" style character, someone with great strength and durability. I will make up for the absence of these characters with NPCs if we don't receive any applicants. I will be adding theme-specific portraits using the character art submitted to me for the four characters above soon and for more characters as they approved. I am truly excited based on the applicants so far and expect this to be an engrossing and positive game with good character dynamics, relations, and long term sustainability.

I am interested. I would like to make a druidess. If I may, she will be able to shapechange into a raven. This will not give her any combat abilities, it is only a way to explore, observe and escape capture.

Her abilities will include some healing, some manipulation of nature, and a bow. This is the basic idea. I can add more to it if the idea is acceptable.

I like the character very much. I have addressed some concerns with overlap with another player's character known as Mialee, a wood elf ranger with a falcon companion, and how either of your abilities will make less useful and unique that of the other's. Once we have that overlap discussed and dealt with, I would say the character submitted via PM is unique and perfect for this game/story.

Would you settle for half-ogre? The brute strength of an ogre, of height anywhere from six to eight feet tall, but not quite as large as a full on ogre. Your musculature would be outstanding. This game sorely needs a character with size/strength as the major advantage. Of course, this character would not be fit for a knowledge class like mage/cleric, and more ideally a raw, physical strength class like warrior, barbarian, and the like.

The initial post has been updated showing all currently approved character types. They are, as follows:

A wood elf ranger (female, fighter)
A human ranger (male, fighter)
A Mer priestess (female, cleric)
A human thief (female, rogue)
A half-elf mage (male, mage)
A half-elf paladin (male, fighter)
A shifter archer (female, fighter)

I will be approving more to enter and leave the game as more characters are submitted to me. As part of the drop-in/drop-out policy, the more, the merrier.  I have added a seperate section to the initial post called "Active Roster", which will list only those characters who, having been approved, are actively participating. That way, players may see a gap in who is participating in a party and may decide they want to create a character to help balance things out.

I will be creating an OOC thread soon and, yes, the glorious IC game thread too. Once the game commences, the following rules apply:

1.) The DM, as in all RPGs, is the ultimate authority. Respectfully, if you do not like this, don't play. I have a great respect for the players participating and will try to make it fun and fair.

2.) Character death is a very real outcome. In the event you lose your character, the IC world accomodates revival. We don't want this to be an easy option, or one without consequences. I advise players to have alternative characters approved so they can continue to role-play if a character has passed.

3.) Players should respect the pace of "rounds". A round in this game is effectively a short period of time in which the player can attempt an action or contribute to a conversation without passing so much time that other players, who must also take their turns, lose a considerable amount of time to react to your character's actions. In other words, please don't state that your character runs off and gets something, then comes back. A whole series of things could happen in that space of time. This is a more subjective thing that will make sense as the game moves along than a hard period of time.

4.) In battle, your actions should take up approximately six seconds. Battle moves at a faster pace than non-battle RP.

Game Status: Character Submissions (PM Darkmoon), Q&A
This game has received enough interest and I am opening it up for character submissions.

Approved characters:

A wood elf ranger (female, fighter)
A human ranger (male, fighter)
A Mer priestess (female, cleric)
A human thief (female, rogue)
A half-elf mage (male, mage)
A half-elf paladin (male, fighter)
A shifter archer (female, fighter)
A half-ogre blacksmith (male, artisan)
A sylph elemental (female, druid)

Active character roster:

(to be updated when game begins and players contribute)

Your fellow word warrior, Darkmoon.

Okay, guys! Thank you very much to everyone involved! We are moving forward. I have introduced the OOC thread at the link below:

The OOC for the active game is now available at the link below:
https://elliquiy.com/forums/index.php?topic=253401.msg12529483#msg12529483

A first post is coming soon with a new IC thread. Please PM if you have any questions about your character. I would like to remind everyone that we are starting as novices and growing as characters as the game progresses, so when the time comes, please make your introductions with that in mind. I am very pleased with the approved characters we have received.

I will also be making more or less uniform sized character portraits using the same theme based on the character art submitted to me during the character submission process. These can be updated at any time if you are unsatisfied with your character art. I encourage you to post images in the game independent of the portraits, to add some color. The portraits I am making should be included at the top of every post, to immediately identify the character. I think the game will be more enjoyable using them. Each portrait will be posted in the OOC thread an you can use the link to the image from there.

Thanks to all involved.

Please PM me your character concepts and, upon approval, you can jump right in. I'll be priming anyone of the basic scenario the party is in so you don't have to read all of the backposts.

And if writing with some amazingly talented folks AND not having to read the entire back thread isn't enough to peek your interest?  We also have a wondrously spiteful, perhaps murderous mermaid; a great mountain of a gentleman half-ogre; a sometimes-wise, grizzled old dragoon; a hard-drinking swordswoman; a gods-mad oathbreaker and his war dog; a busy caracul shapeshifter; a half-elf paladin with so much yet to prove, to himself as much as the world; a young mage only just growing into his own; an elvish ranger; a blind druid, and a shy thief with a penchant for poisons (and culinary and healing herbs as well, of course... ::) )  And those are just the PCs.

Absolutely! Just remember the theme of medieval high fantasy. If you want to do a character that looks Asian, that's completely fine and can be justified with a world location that generates that hereditary look, but please remember that style should gear toward the more realistic end of medieval noble/royal/peasantry/wizardry/warrior/barbarian/etc. There are no schoolgirl, popstars, or mechs! I also ask that anime art is not used for character profiles... unless it's very close to realistic.

Looking forward to your submission. Please note that we have one blind female character already, a wind elemental. I don't see a problem with two blind characters if that's what you really wish to play. Please note that all new characters should be considered novice in their abilities, so as to make room for growth and acquiring new skills / spells as the game progresses. If you are choosing a mage, please focus on a specific element such as fire / water / ice / wind or destruction / control / illusion / necromantic / dark arts. Our characters able to use elements thus far are focused on wind (the blind woman) and water (a mermaid), so please try something different so no player feels redundant.

That's rather spot on for how they would be represented in Airu. As they would be represented in our tale, they would come from either the Dawnwood or Nightwood, two regions of a more vast forest. The Dawnwood has experienced some of the Plague creatures invading its edges, killing mostly wood elves and other fae creatures. The Nightwood has been untouched. Pixies from the Dawnwood would be more prone to be neutral aligned or good-willled, while Nightwood pixies would be mischievous, threatening, perhaps even out to kill.

This definitely sounds interesting!  Having never played D&D before, I'm glad characters actually get to start out as novices, and grow into their abilities.  I'm thinking of playing a human of some sort, and not being well versed in writing out action scenes, I was thinking I might want to concentrate on someone less battle focused, but that could still contribute to the party and help in some way.  I was thinking cleric, which I think is the healing class, but we've already got one, so I'll have to think of something else.  I'll take a look at the OOC thread too, and try to catch up on the story so far, and maybe something there weill strike my fancy.

Alchemist. Commoner. Noble. Mother. Daughter. Father. Son. Combat can be avoided by someone in the rear or hiding running away. Glad to have your interest! There is no dedicated cleric, solely focused on healing and revival.

Hi, I find this very interesting.

Are you still in need of players? If so, what classes?

I will like to play a mage, I realize that class has been taken seven times over. If at all possible, it'll be a mage escorted by a dedicated cleric, a personal physician/handler/caretaker. I'd like the mage to hail from the decimated kingdom as a survior (don't know how rare they are). So two characters for the price of one. Well, one and a half.

He needs a handler because he's a bit peculiar.

If you can find another player to fit that role, it sounds interesting. I prefer not to have new players start out with multiple characters, especially ones that are in the same room at any time. We have a central mage figure, Riven, but if you can conjure up some more specific abilities that might differentiate you from a standard mage, I'd be interested to hear!

Thank you to those that have submitted character ideas to me. I will be responding to those PMs soon. I have been exceptionally busy and when it comes to my time on E, I put the actual game first, so thank you very much for your patience. That said, the game is not going anywhere and an opportunity to introduce new characters IC is not going to present itself for a little while yet, so you are not missing out on anything immediate.

Also, still taking character submissions! Send a basic outline of your character: appearance, goals, something of a history, and anything dynamic about them that you could see adding to the group.
