RAINBOW    CAKE

The Scene, As It Were...

The 1920’s. The Roaring Twenties. The Prohibition Era. Different names for a different time, when new ideas were being slung around as fast as contraband alcohol in farmlands and cities alike. Rich and poor alike searched for a drink at the numerous bars hidden from the public eye. These places were called by different names; blind pigs, blind tigers, hooch parlors, gin joints, or speakeasies. Each place was unique, hidden behind respectable store fronts, newspaper offices, gentleman’s clubs, or other various enterprises. Often these places were guarded by gangs, using the profits of the speakeasy for their own clandestine activities. One of these gangs was notable for its nontraditional methods, even with the diverse gangs that ruled the underworld.

Sexuality was being studied with great interest by the scientific community, and gender expression, while not in the public eye, was encouraged to be explored. One of these people who did such was Henry Baccarati, also known as ‘Ms. Henrietta DuBois’ when properly attired. Her father, Lorenzo Baccarati, was a ruthless boss within the ranks of the Mafia. He had accepted his daughter’s choices with full blessings, letting Henrietta form a gang of her own. After years of searching and paying off a few ‘friends’, she had found a group of people with similar interests, forming a small gang, naming them ‘The All-Sorts’, made up of like-minded friends of Henrietta, who became dedicated to giving the citizens of the night booze and fun times, for a decent price. Henrietta, retiring to Florida along with her beau, left the All-Sorts with her blessing to continue what she had begun.

Eventually, The All-Sorts had a base of operations; a small bakery of popular reputation, located near the waterfront. The name of the bakery was ‘Rainbow Cake’, named after a signature confection; a multi-layered cake, each layer a different color. Customers could have a ‘slice of the rainbow’ for a few dollars' worth. But ask for a slice of the cake 'with whipped cream on top', and you were escorted to a back room, then a long stairway, and into the rowdiest and swinging place in the city...

But like all things that are considered good in life, there are dangers; rival gangs and their bosses who'd want the turf for themselves, stool pigeons who'd rat you out for a dime's worth of gin, cops that'd love to get you into a jail cell for just one night... but in the thrill of the chase, the fights in the dark alleys, the sweet taste of alcohol that won't blind you to the beauty of your company that night, the warmth in your lover's arms as you kiss... it's something that you'd savor, just like a piece of cake for dessert...

Now, I know how some people prefer to have real life pictures of people, and I can and will accept pictures. However, I will also allow pictures that are anime/comic style (IF AND ONLY IF they are 1920's/1940's gangster related). There is also a website called HeroMachine that can produce an animated picture of a character with some fine customization, like it was a comic book character. For example;

Photo:
(From someone who can't draw that well, I like using this site! http://www.heromachine.com/heromachine-3-lab/)

Name: Morgan Hoyt (nickname to follow later)
Age: 23
Alliance: Member of the All-Sorts
Job: Delivery boy for the bakery, driver and occasional thief for the All-Sorts
Gender: Female
Preferences: She is sweet on the ladies, and finds a strong woman... interesting in a good way.
Backstory: Beginning life in an orphanage with some sour-faced nuns that she despised and a name that she hated, the child that would grow up to be Morgan Hoyt left at the age of seven years old. Being chased off by the older boy's gangs and dodging constables that were trying to take hoodlums off the streets of Anchor Town, she found herself backstage at a theatre, entranced by all the costumes, the glittering lights and the women that were singing, dancing, and otherwise performing. One of them noticed the little girl and asked where her mother was; the girl gave a shake of her head, looking up at the woman with big, pleading green eyes.
A copper, huffing and puffing from exertion, ran in about fifteen minutes later. "Hey, you, dame! I've been chasing a little kid through here, red haired little thing, escaped from a refuge or something-" He pointed at a small child at the woman's leg. "About that size, too!" He was about to reach out and pull off the child's cap, when the woman's voice stopped the officer. "Sir, I demand that you leave my nephew alone!"
The child lifted 'his' head, showing short red hair and green eyes beneath a newsie cap, clad in a small shirt, wool pants and suspenders. The officer hastily apologized, turning quickly to leave. The child looked up at the woman, grinning happily.
That was the first meeting between Ms. Henrietta DuBois and the kid, named Morgan Hoyt after the orphanage that connected two streets at a corner.
For all the years that followed, Henrietta would be a mentor and surrogate parent for young Morgan, and the kid would be willing to do nearly anything to please her 'mama', as she was affectionately known. The knowledge that Ms. DuBois was part of an underground gang didn't drive Morgan away, but encouraged the kid to try and 'help'. A few misfires, and Morgan found a job as a delivery boy for the bakery at the age of thirteen.
Ten years, several boxing and shooting lessons later, a more confident Morgan Hoyt reappeared, ready to get moonshine and giggle water for thirsty patrons at the 'Rainbow Cake' bar, and flirt with some of the Janes while doing it.

The Idea

I know that not everyone will want to play a member of the gang, or would want to play the opposition. If you have an idea for a rival gang, please post the name and your suggestion. If you want to play as a cop, that's alright too! (Just don't expect many invites downstairs to the bakery's cellar). We don't want someone trying to derail things by flashing a badge and attempting to arrest everyone... that's an easy way to get cement shoes, you get me?
So, without further ado...

"I have to go see a man about a dog."
Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide
Translation: "I've got to leave now," often meaning to go buy whiskey.

A little inspiration for everyone...

Hey! Hey! Women are going mad, today!
Hey! Hey! Fellers are just as bad, I’ll say!
Go anywhere, just stand and stare,
You’ll say they’re bugs when you look at the clothes they wear.
Masculine Women, Feminine Men,
which is the rooster which is the hen?
It’s hard to tell ‘em apart today. And SAY…
Sister is busy learning to shave,
Brother just loves his permanent wave,
It’s hard to tell ‘em apart today.
Hey, hey!
Girls were girls and boys were boys when I was a tot,
Now we don’t know who is who or even what’s what.
Knickers and trousers, baggy and wide,
Nobody knows who’s walking inside.
Those Masculine Women, Feminine Men!

Music by James V. Monaco, lyrics by Edgar Leslie

Picture pending!
Name: Michael Stoddart
Age: 27
Alliance: Member of the All-Sorts
Job: Head Chef of the bakery, Doorman for the All-Sorts when he's in the bakery, Chef for the Tavern when he's downstairs.
Gender: Male
Preferences: Pansexual, with a soft spot for women, tomboys, and anybody that can stand on their own two feet. He has very little patience for people that need to be coddled.
Backstory: Michael was once known as one of the culinary prodigies of Anchor Town, but that was before prohibition and the depression. All of a sudden, people no longer had money or interest for porterhouse steaks, stuffed lobsters, and king crab. Besides, what's a high-end restaurant without a wine list? Not much, according to his former customers. Even his desserts had to go, he couldn't get so much as a shot of rum for his cakes or a sip of liqueur for his creme brulees, no whisky for the chocolate ice cream...

One by one, he had to cut employees to save money as customers dwindled. Before long, Michael was waiting tables, carrying in 50lb bags of potatoes, peeling them himself, falling asleep in the kitchen, and waking up in time to do it all the next day, right up until the day he had to face the music and close up. It didn't take him long to find the Rainbow Cake as a source of new work. Actually, it would be more accurate to say the Rainbow Cake found him, one of the owners had always been fond of his old place, back when it had customers and a bar. Something about the job, even the name of the place, caught his interest, and he was quick to sign on.

When he first discovered that his entire bakery, his new career, was little more than a front, he was pissed, though not for the reason one might expect. "How could you guys leave me out of this?" he'd argued with Morgan, whom he suddenly saw as his superior, rather than his delivery boy. She was the one he caught letting people into the back, and he'd taken the liberty of taking a look below before confronting her."You guys don't think I'd of wanted to fight prohibition? Not to mention, the food down there sucks! Think of what it's doing to my reputation! Either cut me in, or cut me out completely!"

This is interesting, but whether I actually decide to participate depends on a number of things:

1) Is this a sandbox or you do you have some story ideas in mind?
2) Are players permitted more than one character?
3) Confused by your picture requirements, please clarify: Do you allow photographs? Would you prefer artwork?

May I suggest copying the following code into your opening post?

I may he interested as well and will wait until you answer Chrystal's questions. Also onea of my own. If I do a character, I was thinking cake decorator and perhaps piano player for the club below as he or she is very good with his hands. Would this be okay?
In fear, I ran this way and that, the tastes of blood and chocolate in my mouth.

My yes please and not so much. ;)

Hum! Reminds me of http://www.lackadaisycats.com/. Sounds pretty interesting.

Not a fan of furries normally, but I've had a weakness for Lackadaisy for ages. It tugs at the same heart strings that Sly Cooper always did...

Anyway, I'm really glad to see the game getting some interest. I would answer questions, but I don't want to step on Styx's toes.

Name: Angela Pickford
Age: 21
Alliance: Member of the All-Sorts
Job: Dishwasher for the bakery, Rumrunner for the illicit bar, all around 'handyman', carouser and rabble rouser
Gender: Female
Preferences: Omnisexual
Backstory:Angela grew up in a fairly normal household, interested in the things that most little girls were- dolls, makeup, cooking, all of it. Her parents were fairly well off, for the time, and lived in one of the better parts of Anchor Town. Things seemed pretty normal for her until she started high school, and started to get bored with all the things that had so fascinated her for most of her life.

She started to explore other interests, other pursuits, and started to play around with her gender identity as well. She found that she liked the way she looked in suits and jerseys, with her hair slicked back and tied up. She would show up at school dressed as a boy and acting all tough with the boys, just as often as she would still show up all feminine and gossip with the girls. People who didn't know her often thought it was two different people.

Her parents had her future all planned out for her, she would go to college, get a nice job and then meet a nice man... not necessarily in that order and they seemed much more concerned about the latter than anything else. But everything seemed to shatter when the Depression hit, her father lost his job and fell into drinking, even as it became illegal to do so. This incensed Angela on so many levels, leaving her a little bitter and more than a little confused and a little cheated.

So she lashed out by immersing herself in the emerging counter culture developing around Prohibition. She started by stealing a car and using it to run booze as a sort of 'freelancer', but that didn't last too long before she happened to get caught operating in the area mostly claimed by the All-Sorts. After a tense conversation, she was invited to join the gang, and seeing that her interests and activities meshed well with the group, she readily accepted. She even hired onto the bakery as their dishwasher, as well as all around utility person whenever something fairly simple needed fixing that wouldn't require a professional.

Styx26

*suddenly appears wearing a fedora, grins* Wow, I didn't know I'd get this many interested people... But thank you for checking this idea out, everyone!

So, attending to orders of business:

Hi there, Chrystal! I will answer your questions if order (if I can)...

1.) Hmm... well, plot-wise I'm thinking of sending the Rainbow Cake and the All-Sorts through what a typical speakeasy would go through; rival gangs trying to get a piece of the action, fixing any attempts from the police to get 'insurance' or threaten to run us in, shutting down other, less sanitary bootleggers... issues like that. Anything involving gangs is going to involve some characters getting hurt, maybe worse. We'll just see how the story goes.

2.) I haven't set a limit for characters yet, but I'm going to make it 3, at the most. I'm thinking of making at least one bartender a NPC, so anyone at any time they wish to RP can get a drink and not have to wait...

3.) Heh, I'm sorry about that. I was afraid of getting flak for posting a comic drawing instead of a real person; shows what happens when I shoot my mouth off. Real-life photos are fine, or anime/comic images are good. Just follow E's rules on pics, thanks.

Suggestion noted, and the code was pasted in the first post. Thank you very much for that! ^^

Hi there, wolventears! 'Cake decorator and piano player' sounds like an impressive resume! That's fine by me!

*grins* Hey there, MzHyde! I will admit, Lackadaisy is one of my influences. I may have to have Morgan run around screaming "I don't want a sandwich!" eventually. ^^ I also listen to an audio podcast that has hard-boiled detectives in the 1940's and Canadian superheroes in the 1920's- both shows a great! http://www.decoderringtheatre.com Good stuff!

Hi again, Guy! Thanks for all the help you've given me so far! For the record; if I'm not able to answer a question about gameplay, I think Guy is willing to field it. ^^

*waves at Luna* Hi there! Great profile! Welcome to the business, Angela! :)

Name:  Veronica Bell
Age: 26
Alliance: Herself first and foremost (though that will likely change)
Job: Singer
Gender: Female
Preferences: Anyone that catches her interest
Backstory:
Veronica Bell was born in New City at a most inconvenient time.  Her father was incarcerated for mental illness and her mother was barely making ends meet cleaning houses and taking in laundry to do in the evenings.  Life was not easy for the girl, wearing clothes handed down so often they were nearly rags, forced to stay up late helping her mother with the laundry just so the they had enough to eat and pay the rent.  She started working at the age of five and by the time she was sixteen she'd had enough.  Never again would she do manual labor.

Falling in with the wrong crowd she was exposed to the idea of a lot of money for a little work.  The false glamor and glitter of crime seducing what was once a good, devout girl.  Her natural beauty and charm lent her to the role of a grifter and soon she was working cons on the streets of New City.  It was amazing, people giving her money and all she had to do was tell them what they wanted to hear.  For the next few years she stayed relatively unknown, working out of a small club as a singer and helping out the local gang.

But at the age of 21she finally caught the notice of her first hood.  Taken in she found herself draped in furs and jewels, becoming a kept woman as her career as a lounge singer grew brighter.  She was not kept long, working her way through the ranks of the gang until she was finally the favorite girl of the boss.  No longer was she working the simple cons, she was working a long con on the top man, siphoning off his money and prestige, eyes on a bigger target.

By 24 she finally had things in place, selling out her man to a rival gang.  She felt no remorse, it was simply business after all and she was none too happy that he insisted she belonged to him alone.  Working her way into the bed and coffers of the leader.  It didn't last long as the gang couldn't deal with the emerging gangsters that prohibition brought.  Once more she shifted alliances, helping Burton Valentino muscle into New City and establish a stranglehold on the alcohol distribution.

Veronica was never in the lime light unless she was on stage, always making subtle moves and serving as the honey trap to get blackmail on local authorities.  She loved every moment of it.  But once more her main lover had an issue with her loose ways.  So when rumors started that there was a copper in town that couldn't be bribed or blackmailed, one who was intent on breaking up the speakeasies, she knew it was time to move on.  A few late nights with the police chief and a couple of judges and she knew just when they were planning to strike.

While doors were being kicked down she was on the first bus out of town.  With a couple of suitcases holding her best dresses and furs she soon found herself in Anchor Town.  Alone, friendless, homeless and jobless.  Not that she would let that stop her.  Renting a small room at a boarding house she soon got her hooks into a married man with a sourpuss teetotaler for a wife.  And so she found herself in the Rainbow Cake bar, drooling at the possibilities and all of the temptations.

(She could have already been hired or looking to be so when it starts.  I'm flexible...as you well know.  *grins and winks*)

*Morgan stares at the picture, giving a low whistle and a broad grin. "Baby, where have you been all my life?"*

*I shove at her to move along and start moving barrels*

Oh, uh, welcome to the Rainbow Cake Bakery, Ms. Bell! *grins*

Profile

Photo:
Name: (Stage name) Shulamie (Real name) Melanie Shute
Age: 21
Alliance: All-Sorts 'plaything'
Job: Stripper, and bedwarmer for any woman who wants her.
Gender: F
Preferences: Dominant females. Likes to be bullied. Carries a stiletto to ward off unwanted male attention.

Backstory: Melanie was born in a wagon on a travelling show. (Yes I know that's a line from a song). She was raised by the carnies, and was dragged around from town to town throughout her childhood. Her mother taught her how to dance erotically, taught her how to please a woman, and with the aid of her father, how to please a man. She was raped repeatedly by the males in the show, until she finally learned how to defend herself.

After stabbing one man in the eye and another in the crotch, she ran away from the show at the age of seventeen, as it was passing through the city. She tried to get an honest job, but being unable to read or write, soon found that there were only two jobs available to a girl like her.

Her treatment at the hands of her 'family' had resulted in her developing a strong dislike of men and so she chose to become a stripper, discovering that she had a talent for it.

She quickly learned the difference between "stripping" and "getting undressed in public", and by the time she applied for a job with the All-Sorts, she was beginning to get a reputation as one of the more sought after "exotic dancers". Her act is known to draw a crowd of both men and women. Being brutalised from an early age has left her unable to appreciate tenderness, and unless a lover is rough with her she tends to treat them with contempt.

Actually, I plan on playing a male character if there are too many ladies. I have a singer/band leader in mind. Though I also thought about a female waitress/cigarette girl. Depends on what we have.

I want to see how my sub character is received before creating a domme.

@ Styx: One of my unbendable rules for mixed gender group games is that regardless of which forum the game goes in, be it light, bon, N/C or Ex, I insist that my offs be respected. I in turn will respect the offs of those around me.

In other words, non-consent applies to the character and not the player.

This should be a universal rule, but I've come across players who seem to think that because the RP is in N/C or Ex, they can do what they like to my character and don't need my permission.

Name: Victor Marksley
Age: 26
Alliance: The All-Sorts
Job: Singer/Band Leader
Gender: Male
Preferences: Heterosexual
Backstory:Vic was born from nothing and would've amounted to nothing if it weren't for Ms. DuBois running into him one fine day. Victor's parents were poor and even after he finished schooling he had a hard time finding a job. Chalk it up to bad luck or maybe just his sort of laid-back attitude that everything would work out. He probably could've put more effort in, but he never was a man for work in some dank factory. Vic is an artist through and through and loved to play music and sing. He even formed a small band, and they started playing on the street, in parks, or wherever they could get gigs. It was a meager hand-to-mouth kind of living that never afforded him much more creature comforts than a ratty one room apartment and enough to buy smokes. Until he ran into DuBois, that is.

Victor was playing in the park that day, singing one of his favorites, 'One Way Ticket'. Enraptured, DuBois commented that his voice sounded like "warm honey poured over thunder" and asked him to work for her on the spot. Vic accepted, and the entire band was hired on to provide entertainment for The All-Sorts. Now, Victor splits his time at the speakeasy, singing and playing songs with his band or, if Veronica is on stage, playing back-up for her. He plays a pretty mean saxophone, banjo, acoustic guitar, and clarinet. When more 'discreete' activities are called for, Victor also has a few connections from his street performer days so he can occasionally hook up the All-Sorts with premium hootch.

He seems to be a very relaxed and easy-going type of guy, always flashing a charming smile and quick to offer a joke to lighten the tension. He can be quite charming. When it comes down to it, though, Vic is much smarter than he looks and isn't afraid to offer a bit of advice. He's also good in a pinch, a dependable and loyal type of guy. Friends he makes are typically friends for life. His only vices are for nice suits and cheap smokes.

Singing Voice Sample: The Spine (silver makeup) - http://youtu.be/gQWY-JOhF2I

To Chrystal; I totally agree with you on that. I dunno if I want to place the game in NC, in all honesty, out of personal preference. But at the same time, people will want their characters to interact the way they want to. Do you think it would be too much for the GM to ask that requests for NC scenes and higher be approved first?

And Shulamie is definitely approved for the game!

To MzHyde; Very nice profile. *nods in approval* (Now I'm gonna have to check out the Steam Powered Giraffe band... they sound pretty amazing!)

And welcome to the Rainbow Cake Bar, Mr. Marksley. *grins* If Ms. DuBois likes ya, I like ya.
