I'm looking into this for a friend, but I don't know the names of the major phone companies in the US. I checked up the lowest cost alternative of Verizon, which was 40$/month with a 250MB download limit. Anyone having a better deal?

I, personally, have had at&t/cingular, t-mobile and Verizon.  Verizon has the best service, even out in the boonies, though they make you pay quite a bit to add unlimited texting, long distance, international calls and such.  Cingular has minimal service in the boonies, and I believe it is only $10- 20 extra for unlimited texting.  T-mobile has the fav five, where you can talk to any five people from different networks for nothing, and it does not take away from your minutes.
